Background of the issue
As an introduction, I propose to speculate about the iPhone 6 not as a smartphone, but as a phenomenon that, one way or another, if it did not stir up the market, it will definitely do it. Let's start at the end. Now, in many Apple Stores around the world, the delivery time for new items is 3-4 weeks, which is for the younger model, which is for the older one with the Plus prefix. It is impossible to make a purchase and receive a gadget today, even despite the fact that insiders reported that Apple has occupied almost all cargo airlines to deliver batches of new smartphones to its warehouses in Europe, Asia and America. It is also very difficult to go to any Apple Store abroad and buy an iPhone 6 there. I am generally silent about the older version. I felt the whole sadness of the situation from my own experience when I was present at the start of sales in Berlin. I will talk about this in a separate article.

Someone marked with advertising banners on the Internet, others played with the company's slogans on twitter, and Samsung, as always, distinguished itself the most. The Koreans released a whole series of weird videos, where they openly grinned towards the company from Cupertino.
Looking at all this leapfrog, I recall one excerpt from the famous fable of IA Krylov: "And Vaska listens and he does." While everyone is arguing, swearing and wasting advertising budgets, Apple is rubbing their hands in anticipation of the next superprofits. Even black PR is also PR. And while everyone was trying to speak up, even those who didn't have much to say, the iPhone 6 went from being the most anticipated to the most talked about smartphone of this year.
I deliberately carried out such a reverse chronology of the development of events. Knowing the situation in the present, it is fun to rethink everything that happened in the past. Many desperately tried to somehow denigrate the next "apple" creation, but it turned out exactly the opposite. iPhone 6 is out of stock, and Chinese factories are working at full capacity to meet record demand. Nevertheless, despite the general euphoria, negative moments are really present, so I can't wait to talk about them, so we return to our smartphone.
Packaging and equipment
As always, the product of the California corporation was packaged in a neat paper box made of thick cardboard, consisting of two parts. However, this time, Apple has clearly been overly clever. There is no beautiful and bright printing on the packaging. Instead, there is a convex replica of the face of the device. What for? Why? For what?! I do not know.

In addition to the smartphone itself, the box included a standard USB Lightning cable, a 1 amp charger and the usual EarPods headphones with playback control buttons on the wire. Of course, all sorts of pieces of paper with, so to speak, parting words from the developers and traditional stickers were also in place. There is nothing more, and we did not expect anything more.
Design and convenience
During the lifetime of founding father Steve Jobs, Apple ignored the market trend of increasing the diagonal of the screen of portable devices. The former CEO stated that the 3.5-inch diagonal is the optimal size from the point of view of convenience. But Jobs is gone, and the koknurents with their spade-like devices are already breathing down their backs. In addition, the ever-increasing battery also needs to be placed somewhere inside the case. Obviously, taking into account all these factors, Apple's management made a "revolutionary" decision to increase the screen size in the iPhone. A long path of development and technical research ultimately brought the hero of our today's review into my hands. What about the convenience of the new iPhone 6?
Yes! The iPhone 6 sits perfectly in the hand and finally has a big-eyed display. In other words, you can take it!
And yet, let's break it down. At the beginning, I will describe the elements of the case, and then talk about the perception of the device as a whole.
There are suddenly no elements on the top of the device. Completely bare edge.
The traditional "Power" button has moved to the side of the smartphone and it should be noted that it is very convenient. All this is easily explained by the increased dimensions of the smartphone. Not all users have fingers long enough to reach the top end. And in this case, the thumb is clearly placed on this key.
Below the screen activation button there is the most ordinary tray for Nano-SIM. The tray is removed as before using a special ejector from the iPhone kit. Of course, you can also use a regular paper clip.
On the bottom of the smartphone there is a 3.5 mm audio output, a microphone hole, a Lightning port for connecting the cable from the kit, surrounded by tiny bolts, and a built-in speaker.
The left side is completed with a rocker key for adjusting the volume and a switch to silent mode above. Everything here is already well known to us. The button travel is very clear and pleasant.
Moving on to the back of the smartphone. The plastic inserts between the metal parts of the case immediately catch the eye. The antennas responsible for wireless communications are hidden under these strips. Just like the HTC One. In the latter, the antenna design is very close to that in the iPhone, but they look much more organic in the Taiwanese brainchild.
I don't understand why these inserts are so wide. Maybe this is due to the design features of the smartphone, or maybe Apple's lead designer Johnny Ive likes it the most. I think it looks clumsy against the background of elegant fonts and the inscription "iPhone" on the back cover. It's like tape strips.
There is a traditional bitten apple icon in the middle of the back cover. Even before the presentation, there were rumors that it would be made of the so-called "liquid" metal, a patent for which Apple acquired a long time ago (back in 2010). It is impossible to check the presence of this alloy in the iPhone 6 without special equipment and detailed technical specifications, so we will leave this question to the conscience of experts. I will just remind you that the main feature of this material is unprecedented strength. In these and other parameters, this material outperforms even titanium.
We return to our rams. At the very top of the back surface of the iPhone is a two-tone flash and, of course, the camera peephole, which has already become the subject of scandals.
The bottom line is that Apple was accused of hiding this fact, since some of the official photos from the company's website do not show the protruding lens of the iSight Camera.
The fact that the camera peephole is seriously protruding above the surface of the iPhone 6 case is at least strange. Moreover, when the smartphone lies on a flat surface, when you press the upper left corner of the smartphone, it staggers, that is, the device lying on the surface has only three support points: the camera eye and two lower corners. If there were four, I would lie flat. For any other company, this feature is quite forgivable, but not for Apple, whose engineers and designers bring any of their products to an uncompromising level.
Between the camera and the flash there is a second microphone hole, which is covered with a fine mesh.
Things are much better up front. Firstly, the screen of the smartphone is covered with tempered glass with an anti-reflective filter and an oleophobic coating. And secondly, the edges of the glass are beveled, which is why they form a pleasant roundness to the touch.
For the first time, we saw such a design in Nokia Lumia smartphones. What can I say, swipes on the screen are now even more pleasant to do. The gap between the metal case and the glass is slightly felt only in a few places: at the bottom and top of the device. This is not critical at all.
Above the display is the front camera eye (FaceTime Camera), under which there is a slot for the earpiece. On the side there are holes for the distance sensor and the ambient light sensor.
We have finished with the description, so let's move on to general impressions. What's the new iPhone 6 in hand? The device fits perfectly in any palm and is perceived as a kind of thin piece of metal. The weight is felt, and it's nice. The same 5S, due to its lightness, is somehow lost in the hand.
In Carmen, the six is practically not felt. Due to the rounded edges and very smooth, but still brushed metal, the device is very slippery.
It costs nothing to drop it from your hands, so be careful.
However, I didn't like the new design. Rounded edges, wide stripes ala Adidas pants make the new iPhone 6 somehow not serious. This is not a cocky and status 5 or 5S with its straight shapes and chopped edges.
Due to the large display, sloping design, the six is perceived as some kind of Android, only in a high-quality metal case. When you use it, you look at iOS 8 on a large display and you think, "No, it looks like a regular iPhone." Some kind of mixed feeling.
Display
The iPhone 6 screen is a sandwich of four layers: a backlight canvas, an IPS matrix, a polarizing filter, and tempered glass. There is, of course, no air gap between these layers.
If everything is clear with IPS and protective glass, then this polarizing filter should be interesting. Indeed, the screen does not fade in the sun and remains well readable. In this respect, the display on the iPhone 6 is, in my opinion, one of the best.
The screen is highly resistant to greasy fingerprints. And if the latter did appear, then they can be easily removed with any soft cloth.
The display contrast ratio is 1400: 1 and this, by the way, is exactly 100 values more than the iPhone 6 Plus. The latter, by the way, loses to its younger brother only in this parameter. The rest of the "shovel" from Apple in several ways is better than a 4.7-inch smartphone. For a detailed comparison of characteristics, I recommend referring to the table below in the technical characteristics section.
The display resolution of the iPhone 6 is 1334 × 750 pixels. The pixel density is 326 ppi. Yes, the characteristics are far from the best. Maybe Apple is saving on components, maybe they haven't solved some problems related to rendering the interface at a high resolution, or maybe they just vote to stop the race for the number of pixels per square inch. Indeed, most people cannot tell FullHD (1920 × 1080 pixels) from QHD (2560 × 1440) with the naked eye.
Of course, if you look closely, the "squareness" of fonts and the angularity of round icons can still be detected. I repeat, only if you do it on purpose. Otherwise, this factor does not bother at all and does not negatively affect the perception of the updated display in any way.
As for the viewing angles, they are gorgeous. The image does not fade or change colors, only the brightness of the picture is lost.

Apple is focusing on the fact that the front module began to transmit 81% more light than before. This contributed to improved face recognition in the frame. Thanks to the f / 2.2 aperture, shots really come out bright, even in rooms with a lack of lighting.
There is a continuous shooting mode (up to 10 frames per second).
The rear 8-megapixel iSigth photomodule is capable of producing very good quality images at a resolution of 3264 by 448 pixels. It is reported that the size of one pixel is 1.5 microns, that is, the emphasis is on the larger size. The aperture value is f / 2.2, which, against the background of solutions from some competitors (f / 1.8), looks somehow not entirely revolutionary.
During focusing, you can manually change the exposure threshold by moving the corresponding virtual lever. By the way, the front camera can do the same.
To take all of us adored selfies, the developers have provided a timer for 3 or 10 seconds. Against the background of solutions from the same LG, where the shutter can be released remotely using a voice or gesture, the iPhone 6 is perceived here as a kind of dinosaur. It's high time to come up with something of your own, do you hear, Apple ?!
Image stabilization is also present in the declared characteristics, and its essence is as follows. The camera takes four shots at high shutter speeds, and then combines the best of them into one frame, thereby removing noise, hand shake and other disgrace.
The younger six is deprived of the optical stabilization function, which is present in the extended version (Plus). In the latter case, the A8 CPU, gyroscope and M8 coprocessor adjust the camera lens to compensate for unnecessary hand shake. This process is also assisted by the creation of various shots at short and long exposures. This combination helps to capture clearer photos even in low light conditions. We only have the iPhone 6 on our test, which has only software image stabilization, so let's leave it all at the theoretical level.
In conditions of a strong lack of lighting, any camera is able to show its true face. The iPhone 6 has no problem with this - it is not afraid of the night.
As for the rest of the photography conditions, it is best to evaluate the quality on the example of several pictures:
In panorama mode, images, according to the developers of the company, can reach a resolution of 43 Megapixels. This makes the file size comparable to the RAW image.
Why and who needs these numbers is unclear. However, the panoramas turn out to be very interesting, even in night shooting conditions. See for yourself:
Video is a separate conversation. Standard videos have FullHD resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels) at 60 frames per second.
There is a slow motion mode (Slo-Mo) already at 240 or 120 frames per second. True, in this case the resolution drops to 720p. In addition, you can create time-lapse videos.
The iPhone 6 Plus also features cinematic video stabilization. Apple has not yet revealed the details of using this technology in a smartphone, so we will try if possible. Better now, let's go back to the six and look at examples of the video shot on it:

In this review, I will not describe in detail the features of the new iOS 8. This topic deserves a separate material, so I will only describe what looks especially interesting on the new iPhone 6.
The most interesting features of the firmware are related to the use of the new increased display space. Reaching the top line of desktop icons is very difficult, even with a large palm and long fingers. You have to either touch the iPhone in the palm of your hand, or reach with your finger to the far corner of the screen, risking dropping the device.
Apple went to meet users and provided a double tap on the "Home" button, thanks to which the top of the display goes down to about the middle of the screen and you can safely reach any application. The function works smoothly, recognizes touches well and, in principle, is convenient.
On the desktop, the white space remains filled with the background, and all applications will see a black screen. Somehow strange and a little ill-considered. You could probably come up with some beautiful textured background or leave a piece of wallpaper from your desktop visible there.
Secondly, from the settings, you can select the increased size of the interface. The example is built into the operating system itself, so you can immediately understand how it will look.
But the enlarged interface in other applications did not catch on, so I returned to the standard size.

In my opinion, the iPhone 6 turned out to be ambiguous. On the one hand, we all wanted a big screen and a fresh design. Received, as they say, in full. The screen is really good. I have no complaints about the camera, since the resolution is not so important against the background of the main parameter - the quality of images and videos. The miracle has not happened to the battery yet. But the design has become somehow incomprehensible. Maybe time will pass, we will digest the new concept and will be happy about the changes, but for now, I vote for the iPhone 5S. In him, the appearance was much more mature and solid.
Should I buy an iPhone or not?
The initial cost of the 16 GB iPhone 6 is 31,990 rubles. The economic situation and the dollar exchange rate are all understandable. In my opinion, it is expensive, but tolerable, so if you want to buy a new product, you need to take it. The older model with 128 GB of memory will cost 41,990 rubles and this is already inadequate. For that kind of money, even the most recent iPhone will be of little interest to anyone.
Should I change my old iPhone 4 / 4S / 5 / 5S?
Definitely! Still, the big display decides. It also has one of the best cameras on the market, albeit not the most megapixel one. She shoots well at night, and this is an indicator. As for the design, you will probably get used to it, unless, of course, it seems strange to you. It is noteworthy that during the disassembly process, a gray iPhone 6 and a gold iPhone 6 Plus were used - exactly the same colors and models as in the recent smartphones for durability. It's a good thing iFixit managed to get hold of a 5.5-inch iPhone, because rumor has it that it will be as rare as the gold iPhone 5s last year. But let's leave the lyrics aside and proceed to the autopsy.
To be the first in the business, iFixit had to acquire smartphones in Australia, the first country to start selling. The first fall of the smartphone from the hands took place here, but that's another story.
The design of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as noted by iFixit, is very similar to the very first iPhone, also known as 2G. Model numbers A1586 and A1524 respectively. The camera does protrude, but the measurements show only 0.6 mm - not much at all. As before, to open the case, you will need to unscrew the two non-standard screws on the bottom of the device, and then disconnect the display from the rest of the device. Only one single ribbon cable at the top of the iPhone will completely prevent this from happening. No longer is the Touch ID to Lightning cable that made iPhone 5s disassembled. In the iPhone 6 Plus, the motherboard is slightly different, but it has exactly the same modules as in the iPhone 6. Accordingly, the performance of smartphones will also be absolutely identical. Apparently, the A8 processor makes no difference what display resolution it works with.
iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus received slightly modified speakers that are devoid of any markings. But now you can replace the speaker separately from the rest of the parts - this is a plus. Again, confirming the spy shots of the components, Apple has placed the Lightning connector and headphone jack in a single module on a single ribbon cable. The volume buttons and the Power button are also a single detail. They are connected by a rather thin loop.
Contrary to rumors, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are not water resistant. However, there is a rubber gasket under the Power button and volume buttons to prevent accidental splashing or debris from getting inside the case. This is a step forward, but you shouldn't get caught in the rain with a new smartphone in your hands.

In addition to the record size for the company, the sixth series iPhone also turned out to be surprisingly thin 6.9 mm (or 7.1 mm in the plus version). All thanks to the use of ultra-modern materials, the finest microcircuits and boards.
Exterior
Observing the tradition that has developed over several years, this year the "apple" flagships have acquired solid aluminum cases. Say what you like - metal cladding has always been and remains in favor among users. Holding such an iPhone in your hands, you feel a high-quality and status product. 
This time, the image of the iPhone came out somewhat futuristic. Exceptionally smooth anodized aluminum sets the tone for the entire design of the iPhone, and it seems that this high-tech device came to us from the future.
It looks absolutely monolithic - all its elements are so clearly fitted. Its contours flow smoothly, and the screen is like a natural continuation of the case. There are no gaps of any kind, no backlash and squeaks. The movement of the buttons is quiet and correct.
To create the corporate "apple" logo, a "smart" material was used - Liquidmetal (ie, "liquid" metal). It is resistant to most types of damage, and is capable of self-healing. So the notorious apple will keep its original state for a long time.
It is worth noting that despite the significantly increased diagonal, the sixth iPhone does not look big at all. The rounded edges visually conceal the real size, and the exceptional thinness of the smartphone only enhances this effect.
The constituents
In a sense, the Six is seeing Apple's return to its roots, yet another attempt to reinterpret the glorious all-metal models that were its predecessors.
As previously stated, the body of the sixth iPhone is made from anodized aluminum alloy, 6000 series. It is lightweight and very durable at the same time, resistant to damage and scratches. A similar material is actively used in the aircraft and automotive industries. It is just universal, because does not corrode and rust, even in contact with aggressive media. It lends itself well to processing, and allows you to create sufficiently strong structures with low weight, with a minimum wall thickness.
Based on the marking, the tensile strength of such alloys can reach up to 6000 kg / cm2. For greater strength, the manufacturer exposes the original material to additional thermal hardening, which significantly extends the service life.
Inside the alloy, in the most vulnerable places - in the center and near the antennas, titanium and steel inserts are interspersed.
They are the backbone for, in general, ductile aluminum.
Contrary to expectations, the iPhone is neither dust- nor waterproof. And I would very much like to, since the number of "drowned" is a significant part of the failed smartphones.
However, in the new flagships, other problems of the predecessors have been eliminated. For example, complaints about the rapid erasure of paint on the corners and sides of colored iPhones forced the company to take action. This time, taking into account all the users' complaints, the "colored" versions of the "sixes" were painted with a more advanced method - anodizing.
It assumes deep penetration of pigments into the material, under prolonged exposure to polarization currents in a conductive liquid. In addition, an extremely strong oxide film is formed on the surface, which is equivalent in hardness to diamond. In the future, it prevents the "washout" of the pigment, and greatly facilitates the subsequent care of the gadget.
The surface of the smartphone does not fade under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, the paint does not peel off over time. Such a coating is an order of magnitude more resistant to abrasion, whitish stripes of scratches are less noticeable on it. True, it will not be able to protect the body from chips and dents when dropped on asphalt, tiles or concrete. If the holes are deep, everything will be clearly visible. However, the mesh of small scratches will go unnoticed.
In this context, the silver version is the most wear-resistant, since it is unpainted. In fact, it is on it that you observe the true color of the alloy from which the case is made. And no matter how you damage your iPhone, its surface will always remain monochromatic.
Another part of the body of the iPhones is the display. And this time it is made, albeit from durable, but still glass. Expectations about the appearance of a branded sapphire display in the "sixes" did not come true. At the moment, the company has not yet managed to create a material that fully meets the high requirements. The test samples were either too thick and did not fit into the context of the "thinnest iPhone." Or, the image on the screen was too dim. Therefore, for the time being, this idea had to be abandoned temporarily.
But the camera peephole and the Home button are traditionally covered with high-strength sapphire crystal, which is second only to diamond in terms of hardness and transparency. And since both the first and the second are extremely important for the full use of the iPhone, the use of a sapphire coating is absolutely justified.
Case problems
Many were extremely unhappy with the ugly plastic inserts on the back of the iPhone. If in the version of the graphite color they seem to merge with the metal, then on the silver and golden ones - they quickly wear off to white, become even more noticeable. 
Moreover, they are often dyed blue - from jeans, when worn in a back pocket. Even the explanation that they were forced - from a technical point of view - to freely pass electromagnetic waves to the antennas of the smartphone did not smooth out the overall unpleasant impression. The famous bulging camera, which became the object of ridicule of competitors, added fuel to the fire.
Is he bending?
In pilot products, a slight deformation of the case was also observed when the user sat down with a smartphone in his pocket (in fact, he sat down on an iPhone). The most vulnerable spot was the space between the volume buttons and the middle of the device. 
Competing companies and ill-wishers immediately inflated the whole company with a loud slogan: “And the new iPhone is bending!”. Many videos flooded the network, in which the iPhone was subjected to imaginable and inconceivable tests: deformed on presses, clamped in a vice, crushed in a blender, etc.
Although the problem was partly exaggerated and far-fetched. Still, if you set a goal, you can bend any smartphone. It is clear that in ordinary situations, a normal, sane user who gave a lot of money for an iPhone will never treat him like that.
The company acknowledged the problem in isolated cases. If you look at the dry statistics, then out of 15 million sold iPhones of the first wave, only nine users filed such complaints. And all of the bent iPhones have been replaced to avoid a build-up of consumer resentment.
This “fragility” is partly due to the design of the case itself. This time it turned out to be a record thin one, moreover, the diagonal has grown significantly. And, of course, the plastic strips for the antennas did not add to the overall strength of the product.
Later, in a short time, the frame in all subsequent mass series was strengthened. So, in the weakest areas, it was supplemented with special inclusions. They can be seen at multiple magnifications - they are thin red streaks.
In addition, Apple hastened to post an official "vindictive" video, where you can see the degree of resistance to loads of the plus version of the sixes. In laboratory conditions, on special equipment, iPhones were checked for bend and break. So the "experimental six" sagged under a weight of 100 pounds by 3.25 mm, the analogue from competitors - the flagship Samsung, sagged by 4.5 mm. Other disadvantages
Another nuisance that has received the widest publicity in the Internet user environment is hair pinching. Yes, you heard right. Many owners noted that during conversations, hair near the temple and beard got stuck in the narrow gap between the case and the display glass. Without expecting this, the user, ending the conversation, as usual, removed his iPhone from his ear, and together pulled out a lock of hair or regrown stubble. The spiteful critics immediately spread the "meme" that the new iPhone could replace the owner with a razor or trimmer.
Also, according to the feelings of most owners, the 6th series of iPhones turned out to be extremely slippery. Therefore, the number one problem, not related to the operation of the gadget, is breakage from falls. The display suffers most of all, because most often the iPhone lands on it, and asphalt and glass are incompatible things.
Everything would be fine if, to replace it, you did not have to disassemble the smartphone case to the screw, and lay it out only for the original spare part - almost half the cost of a new gadget. So we strongly recommend purchasing a cover. With him, the grip will be much more confident, and for sure the case will protect you from damage in case of careless falls.
By the way, regarding the display, the reviews also happened not to be the best. Without the use of a case or protective film, the highly-praised durable coating - Gorilla Glass, from Corning, very quickly becomes covered with a network of micro-scratches. Especially if the user does not treat his smartphone in the most careful way - he carries it in his clothes pockets or in a bag, along with keys and other similar contents.
Do you want a change?
Traditionally, Apple hasn't pampered consumers with a variety of colors. And this time again only three colors of the cases are available for selection: golden, light - and dark - silver.
If the colors presented by the manufacturer seem boring to you, you do not accept covers or bumpers - service centers are ready to help you. For an additional fee, they can repaint and "tune" a standard iPhone into a unique gadget that reflects the spirit and style of the owner. This can be not only repainting by anodizing in the desired color, but also engraving, inlaid with stones, “playing” with the logo, right up to the creation of a luminous apple. 
As a rule, the device itself does not suffer at all from such manipulations. So if you want to make the exterior of a smartphone for yourself, feel free to dare. Moreover, this method can be used to update the body damaged in the fall.
