Problems in WO are with compatibility, add-on. To fix them, start Internet Explorer - Safe Mode to disable add-ons, extensions. Do it:

  • Open a command prompt (via search).
  • Type C: \ Program Files \ Internet Explorer \ iexplore.exe -extoff.
  • Click enter.

Do you know this? Agree, the situation is not the most pleasant and the only thing you have to think about at the moment is whether the text will be saved.


Obviously, if Word does not respond, then you will not be able to save the document, at least at the moment when the program hangs. This is the kind of problem that is better prevented than fixed when it has already occurred. In any case, you need to act according to the circumstances, and below we will tell you where to start if you are faced with such a nuisance for the first time, as well as how to insure yourself in advance against such problems.


Note: In some cases, when trying to force close a Microsoft program, you may be prompted to save the contents of the document before closing it. If you also see such a window, save the file. At the same time, you will no longer need all the tips and tricks outlined below.

Taking a screenshot

If MS Word freezes completely and irrevocably, do not rush to close the program forcibly using "Task Manager"... How much of the text you type will be saved exactly depends on the autosave settings. This option allows you to set the time interval after which the document will be saved automatically, and this can be either several minutes or several tens of minutes.


Learn more about the function "Autosave" we'll talk a little later, but for now let's move on to how to save the “freshest” text in the document, that is, what you typed just before the program hangs.


With a probability of 99.9%, the last piece of text you typed is displayed in the window of the hovered Word completely. The program does not respond, there is no way to save the document, so the only thing that can be done in this situation is a screenshot of the window with the text.


If you don't have third-party screenshot software installed on your computer, follow these steps:


1. Press the PrintScreen key located at the top of the keyboard, immediately after the function keys (F1 to F12).



2. You can close a Word document using the Task Manager.


  • Press the keys “ CTRL + SHIFT + ESC”;

  • In the window that opens, find the Word, which, most likely, will “not answer”;

  • Click on it and click on the button "Remove task" located at the bottom of the window "Task Manager";

  • Close the window.


3. Open any graphics editor (standard Paint is fine) and paste the screenshot that is still in the clipboard. Click for this "CTRL + V".




4. If necessary, edit the image by cropping unnecessary elements, leaving only the canvas with the text (the control panel and other program elements can be cropped).




5. Save the image in one of the suggested formats.



If any program for creating screenshots is installed on your computer, use its key combinations in order to take a snapshot of the Word window with text. Most of these programs allow you to take a snapshot of a separate (active) window, which in the case of a frozen program will be especially convenient, since there will be nothing superfluous in the image.

If the screenshot you took doesn't have much text, you can manually retype it. If there is practically a page of text, it is much better, more convenient, and simply faster to recognize this text and transform it using special programs. After the program recognizes the text, you can save it, copy and paste it into the MS Word document that did not respond by adding it to the part of the text that was saved thanks to autosave.


Note: When we talk about adding text to a Word document that did not respond, we mean that you have already closed the program and then reopened it and saved the last suggested version of the file.

Setting the Auto Save Function

As it was said at the beginning of our article, what part of the text in the document will be exactly preserved even after it is forced to close, depends on the autosave settings set in the program. With a document that is frozen, you will not do anything, of course, other than what we suggested to you above. However, you can avoid such situations in the future as follows:


1. Open a Word document.


2. Go to the menu "File"(or “MS Office” in older versions of the program).



3. Open the section "Options".



4. In the window that opens, select "Preservation".


5. Check the box next to "Autosave every"(if it is not installed there), and also set the minimum time period (1 minute).



6. If necessary, specify the path for automatic saving of files.


7. Press the button "OK" to close the window "Options".


8. Now the file you are working with will be automatically saved after a specified period of time.


If Word freezes, is closed forcibly, or even together with the system shutdown, then the next time you start the program, you will be immediately prompted to open and open the last automatically saved version of the document. Probably, there is no need to say how it is annoying when a user types a text in Word, and the program hangs up at the most inopportune moment, which makes it impossible to save the document. But so much time was spent on its creation ... But let's see how to save the document if the "Word" is frozen. As it turns out, not everything is so bad, and it is still possible to offer several solutions for restoring the functionality of the application and even an unsaved document. They are quite simple, and any user can master them.

"Word" hangs, but the document is not saved: what to do?

Most users in such a situation usually begin to use drastic methods related to closing a text editor. Yes, indeed, this can be done, but only if the operating system is operational. In Windows 10, there is a problem that the application hangs tightly, and no means of accessing the same "Task Manager" work (neither the interface, nor the mouse, nor the keyboard respond to user actions). There is only one way out - a forced shutdown of a computer or laptop with a second turn on. That is, it turns out that the question of how to save a document if Microsoft Word is frozen, in this case, is unsolvable at all.

But when you call the editor again, it usually offers to restore the automatically saved copy to a specific point in time. But here it all depends solely on the autosave settings (specifying the time interval after which it should be triggered constantly). Along the way, it is worth noting that this technique is applicable only if a name was originally assigned to the file, since by default the program saves only two states: the initial and the last as a copy. So, if you just created a new file, but did not initially save it, the editor may not prompt you to restore the saved copy when you restart it.

Thus, in order to protect yourself from the occurrence of such situations, it is recommended to make such settings in advance.

In most recent versions of the text editor, you can find them through the file menu with a choice of the parameter line. On the left in the menu that appears, there is a save section, after entering which on the right you need to set the desired interval (the less, the better). For example, if you set one minute as a parameter, you can be absolutely sure that the main document will not be lost when the program hangs. It is unlikely that even with the fastest typing, someone will have time to enter too much text.

Now let's move on to considering a few extraordinary methods. So, the "Word" is frozen. How do I save a document? So far, we are not talking about preservation. The first step is to try to reanimate the editor in order to save it after it has been restored to work. Again, this only applies when the system reacts to user actions.

In this case, you need to call the "Task Manager" using the standard 3-button combination or the taskmgr command in the "Run" menu, go to the performance tab and press the F5 key. Then, through the Alt + Tab combination, you need to switch to the editor and after a while (when its functionality is restored) you can save the desired file.

Screenshot technique

You can offer one more technique if the "Word" is frozen. How do I save a document? To do this, you can use the creation of a screenshot of the screen. The disadvantage of this solution is that when creating a snapshot in the editor, not all the text will be displayed, but only the one that is currently visible on the screen. But it may very well be that just this fragment can be used to supplement the autosaved file when the application is restarted.

A screenshot is usually created by pressing the Print Screen key in combination with other buttons such as Win, Fn, Alt, Shift, etc. These may differ from one computer device to another. Now the fragment placed on the clipboard needs to be saved. For this, any simple graphic editor (for example, the same Paint) is suitable, in which you need to use the insertion of an image and then save the file in any available format.

Converting graphics to text

But back to the situation when the "Word" is frozen. We figured out how to save a document in a graphic format. But there is no point in inserting a graphic object into an autosaved file, since in most cases you may need to. What to do in such a situation?

Many experts call the use of special text recognition programs like ABBYY FineReader as one of the main solutions. In the application, you just need to scan a graphic file with the choice of converting graphics to text Word. In this case, there should be no problems with recognition, since you do not need to scan printed text on paper, electronic copies are recognized instantly, and the appearance of possible errors in the original text is almost one hundred percent excluded.

Short summary

That, in fact, is all that concerns situations when the "Word" is frozen. How to save the document, I think, is also clear. But which of the proposed methods can be used as a kind of universal solution? If you do not take into account the installation of the necessary autosave options, for a start it is recommended to try to reanimate the editor through the "Task Manager". But if that doesn't help, you'll have to take a screenshot and convert the graphics to text.

But, alas, in the case of Windows 10, when not only the main program hangs, but the entire system freezes, none of the above methods will work. We can only hope that after rebooting the system, Word will offer to restore the document to some point in time. And do not forget to preset the minimum interval for saving current copies. It is quite possible that most of the typed material will remain, and the very minimum of the lost text will have to be “picked up”.

1. Creating a new profile

    Uncheck the box next to one of the add-ons in the list and click OK.

    Note: Some older add-ins are known to cause problems. If such add-ons are listed, first uncheck the boxes for them: Abbyy FineReader, PowerWord, and Dragon Naturally Speaking.

    Restart the application (not in safe mode this time).

If Outlook starts then the problem is with the add-on you disabled. We recommend that you visit the official website of the add-on and check for updates. If there is no newer version or you do not use this add-on, you can no longer select the corresponding checkbox or remove it from your computer.

If Outlook won't start, repeat the steps to uncheck the next add-in. Follow the process for both items in the list Control: Outlook add-ins and COM add-ins... If, after disabling all add-ins, you still cannot start an Office application, the problem is not add-ins. Try other troubleshooting methods suggested in this article.

    If there are updates available, click Install.

If the problem persists after updating Windows, make sure you have the latest drivers for the following devices: video card, printer, mouse, and keyboard. Typically, drivers for these devices can be downloaded and installed directly from the manufacturer's website.

If you are using a laptop, check the manufacturer's website for updated files. For example, there is a known issue with an older version of the DisplayLink custom mode driver that is used on some laptops. To update your DisplayLink driver, go to the manufacturer's website.
