Sony Xperia Z3 Compact - Specifications. Smartphone Sony Xperia Z3 Compact: characteristics and reviews Sony Xperia Z3 Compact dimensions in centimeters

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, which replaced the compact version of the Z1 (and at the same time the regular Z2), does not seem to have innovative characteristics, but it works not only fast, but lightning fast. It can also save battery, shoots clear video and is quite compact for its diagonal size...

Packaging, accessories

The device comes in a white matte box. In addition to it there are: a charger, a user manual, a USB cable and a warranty card.

Design

The smartphone continues the design solutions of the Z-series. This time, pink (more like coral) and green (similar to mint) were added to the black and white bodies.

The phone body is rectangular, the corners are only slightly rounded for ease of use. The entire front panel is hidden by Dragon trail protective glass. Above the screen on the left are sensors and an LED (now it is not placed in the speaker, but is represented by a separate “light bulb”), in the middle is one of the stereo speakers, and on the right is the front camera lens. Below the screen there is a second stereo speaker.

On the side on the right is a round aluminum power key, below it (right in the middle) is the volume control, and at the bottom is the camera.

At the top left are a micro-USB connector and, under a thick plug, a slot for a micro SD memory card, lower down is a connector for a docking station, and even lower is a nano-SIM slot with its own plug. The card can be inserted and pulled out by simply picking up the convex “bed” with your fingernail.

At the top end there is a headphone jack, at the bottom there is a microphone and a hole for a lanyard.

The back panel is also covered with Dragon trail glass. At the top is the main camera lens (at the body level), its short description and LED flash, below is the NFC icon, below it is the Sony logo, and even lower is XPERIA. There is no access to the battery.

Display

The smartphone has a 4.6-inch IPS display with Triluminos Display technology and a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. It’s a little strange to see a non-Full HD display in a flagship, but you can understand the logic of Sony manufacturers - lower resolution - less processor power in processing images - lower battery consumption - another plus compared to the main Z3 model.

Good viewing angles and excellent color rendition are now common characteristics of modern screens. Is it possible to be brighter? It turns out that it is possible! Firstly, the phone uses Live Color LED for natural color display (130% sRGB palette capture). Secondly, in the “Display” section there is an item “Image enhancement”, where two options are offered: X-Reality for mobile, as stated in the description, increases the brightness and clarity of the image, but there is no need to describe the maximum mode. The picture on the display really becomes richer, and in some cases even too rich.

You can also select the white balance for the display if the current settings are not satisfactory in some way.

The display backlight is bright and of high quality. The minimum level is enough for everyday use.

Finally, there is the “glove” function that is already familiar to Sony.

Interface

The device has a traditional proprietary interface and runs on the latest version of Android 4.4.4.

The quick settings and notifications tabs are labeled rather than small icons. The main desktop can be regular or branded, in the latter case it is a matrix of large tiles.

Performance

A processor with a clock frequency of 2.5 GHz and 2 GB of RAM give the 2014 phone almost limitless possibilities.

Initially, approximately 11 GB of memory is available to the user. The phone doesn't have a default memory option, but you can transfer data (videos, music and photos only) to an SD card by selecting the desired option in the Memory settings menu.

The quality of music playback is quite high.

Camera

The main 20.7 MP camera with autofocus and LED flash produces stunning images in all conditions, including close-up and night photography (sensitivity up to ISO 12,800, Exmos RS 1/2.3 sensor).

A list of all available functions appears by pressing the icon under the shooting keys. There are more than 10 pre-installed versions, and new ones can be downloaded. Most of them know from previous models:

Manual option (from image size to ISO sensitivity and white balance);

Super automatic mode (minimum settings, shooting from 8 megapixels);

Defocusing the background;

Panorama (comes out well in shaking hands of almost any curvature);

Timeshift burst (selecting the best image from a series before and after pressing the shutter);

Artistic effect;

AR Effect (shooting with drawn objects and characters);

Timeshift video (shooting at high frame rates and slow motion);

Sending photos to social media networks and Evernote.

Among the new versions are Sound Photo (photo with sound), AR entertainment (new drawn objects), multi camera (shooting with several devices from different points), with a face (inserting a face into a picture).

Photos and videos with effects are saved in separate subfolders inside the DCIM/Xperia folder: TIMESHIFT_VIDEO, AR_EFFECT, etc.

Video shooting is performed with a maximum resolution of 4K - 3840x2160 pixels, if the appropriate option is enabled. Before starting recording, the phone honestly warns that it may turn off if it overheats. A minute of recording will take about 400 MB of memory, while standard 1080p will take 120-130. The quality of the videos allows you to watch them on a large diagonal TV display.

Wireless interfaces

The smartphone contains, perhaps, all modern interfaces.

Autonomous operation

In active use mode (constant 3G synchronization, 1 hour of Internet and games, half an hour of chatting, energy saving modes disabled) the phone was discharged in 8 hours 40 minutes. This is more than the market average and is approximately equal to a whole working day. If you use it less intensively, you can last up to 2 days, and including the Internet if necessary, all 3-4 days.

The movie can be watched for about 9 hours. The battery discharges from 10% to 0 at the same rate as at higher rates.

All this applies to normal use. To extend operating time, several battery saving modes are provided.

STAMINA is a standard mode for Sony phones; here you can also select an application that is allowed to work in standby mode, and enable battery saving if the phone is often used as a watch.

The most economical is the Ultra STAMINA option (other Z-smartphones did not have it), it disables all others and requires about 15 seconds to activate. After which you find yourself on a modified desktop, and even the settings will be cut down. Only Bluetooth and basic functions will remain available.

Video review of the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact smartphone

Unknown

pros

Full of necessary and not so necessary functions, very advanced in functionality, easy intuitive menu, a 5+ device, if not for the build quality and, as it turned out, the complete lack of dealer support

Minuses

According to reviews from servicemen, not only from the workshop where the device was repaired, there are frequent calls due to manufacturing defects or when purchased under the guise of a new repair device, even in large “grids”

Impression

"Compact Z-3" - a complete "hat" - was purchased on 12/01/14, and already on 01/18/15 the screen began to peel off from the corner and a stripe appeared along the entire length of the screen on the side, the sensor did not work at first, but after the phone was completely dead , tormented by the fact that he lived his life for almost two days (played a video, made sounds as if he was photographing something, turned on the alarm clock, while the screen was “off” and due to problems with the sensor it was impossible to turn it off) and again Charged/rebooted the touch screen worked, albeit with a stripe and a screen extending from one corner of the body. And all this taking into account the fact that the device was purchased new from Svyaznoy. Naturally, under warranty, it was delivered to the Sony dealership in Moscow, in the hope that “Sony” is the name, support from the “end”, etc., such as quality control, etc., but in the end after 30 days that he stayed there, instead of repairs, a conclusion was received, not even from the manufacturer, but from some third-party LLC, in which “a type of independent examination was carried out” (such a “mastodon” as Sony turns out to be in Russia does not have its own expert institution): refusal to repair, allegedly due to water getting inside, allegedly scratches and careless operation, although it was covered with films on both sides when purchased at the Svyaznoy office for more than 2 thousand rubles, for which it was even the warranty is separate from the device from "Svyaznoy" and was always in a case, the device was not dropped into water and was not walked in the rain with it (winter, careful operation, by a girl) - they sent it to an independent workshop with a good reputation, it was opened in front of us - verdict: it wasn’t even opened at the dealership, there are no traces of water getting into the device, it’s a factory defect. As a result, repairs cost 14.5 thousand rubles. and the loss of waterproofing function as a negative “bonus”, because The touch screen assembly was replaced. As explained in the workshop, there are many complaints about this kind of breakdown, there are frequent cases of sales even in branded network centers (M-video, Svyaznoy, Euroset) of repair devices under the guise of new or defective devices, as in our case. After that, I found out from friends - two who bought the same devices had similar problems, although from experience with the Z-1 there were no such problems, they even filmed underwater at sea - and everything was ok, and not just me. Since then, this long-suffering "Z-3 compact" seems to be working and not glitching. Verdict - dealer service, despite the high price of the gadget, is simply absent; the manufacturer does not bear any responsibility for its defects to the buyer. Although I am completely satisfied with its qualities, it is advanced and full of functions. “Bits” that I also use, that the 4th, that the 5th dropped several times - I only changed the broken glass panels, dropped them in the bathtub, after drying they came back to life, once I even poured hot coffee on the 4th - it dried up, but about After two weeks the home button started to malfunction - I had to replace it for 1.5 rubles.

pros

Build quality.

Speed.

Possibility of increasing memory.

Glass on both sides.

Waterproof.

Minuses

The above mentioned problem is with spontaneous discharge.

Impression

After the Lumia 925, the impressions are entirely positive. I will no longer return to the wretched WP crutch I spent 2 years with. But Sony also gave me a surprise with a minus sign.

After a month of use, the phone began to discharge very quickly (within 7 hours) in all modes, active, “sleeping” and even (attention) in the off (!!!) state and was constantly warm. In search of the cause of this accident, I searched all over the Internet, tried to turn off everything I could, and completely reset the phone several times. to the factory settings, I flashed it a couple of times via cable, through the Sony utility. In general, I took it to the service center, and after 2 weeks I received a fully working device. To the question: “What did you do?” - received the answer: “We asked again.” In general, I was glad that they didn’t take it apart, but I didn’t understand the answer a little, because... I flashed it myself 2 times.

It doesn’t matter, now the phone holds a charge for 2 days in average use mode (conversations 3 hours a day, a little Internet) and about 20-30% remains. Happy as an elephant. Yes, I also bought protective glass for the front and back, I really love the tactile sensations of the glass and a couple of wires for magnetic charging, so as not to bother with plugs.

Today, people are divided into two categories: some crave devices with large screens, while others, remembering Steve Jobs’ commandments about the ideal diagonal of a smartphone, demand compact but powerful phones from manufacturers. At IFA 2014, Sony catered to everyone's needs. The Japanese showed not only the new flagship Z3, but also its smaller version Z3 Compact, which differs from its “big brother” only in dimensions (well, and some other small points). If you could already review the first one on our website, then we will get acquainted with the second one now. Make yourself comfortable!

Video review of Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

To begin with, I propose to understand the main differences between the Z3 and Z3 Compact. There are not so many of them anymore. It is clear that our today’s hero has lost a little in dimensions (64.9 x 127 x 8.6 mm versus 72 x 146 x 7.3 mm) and weight (129 grams versus 152 grams). The Z3 Compact is a little thicker, but that's logical. The battery in the Z3 is set at 3100 mAh, and in the Z3 Compact it is 2600 mAh. In the first case, 3 GB of RAM is available, in the second there is 1 GB less - 2 GB. Due to the smaller diagonal of the Z3 Compact (4.6 inches versus 5.2 inches), the resolution has also decreased: from Full HD to regular HD. That's all. Otherwise, these devices are identical, which is good news.

Appearance

Externally, the Sony Xperia Z3 is similar to the company's previous models, so it will be difficult to confuse the device with solutions from other companies. But it's for the better. Personally, I like the design solutions of the Japanese over the past few years. For example, in our case, the smartphone has very thin side frames (they are also quite small at the top and bottom), so the 4.6-inch screen was placed in a body that is much smaller in size than competitors with a similar display diagonal.

Above the screen there was a place for the Sony logo, two sensors (lighting and proximity), a front camera and a speaker. Moreover, the latter has a twin brother, who is already located under the display. You understand that stereo sound in any device is always pleasant. By the way, about the sound. It is of very high quality and clean, but at maximum volume (this is especially noticeable in games), the smartphone begins to vibrate in your hands.

Exactly in the center of the right side, the engineers placed the power control key, which is made in the best traditions of Sony - round and silver. On the black version (there are also red, light green and white) it looks very impressive. Just below you can find a volume rocker. It has two features: it is small (on my Lumia 1520 the lock button is the same size) and it is located too close to the aforementioned power control key, so accidental presses cannot be avoided for the first few days. But then you get used to it. A two-position camera button is also present.

On the left everything is hidden behind plugs. Only a two-pin connector for connecting to the docking station in a visible place. Under the top “flap” you can find a microUSB connector and a slot for memory cards, and under the bottom there is a tray for SIM cards in Nano format. To be honest, opening the cap every time to charge a smartphone or transfer some data to a computer is not always convenient. Although security (according to the IP 65/68 standard) is never superfluous. But HTC, as we all know, does not believe that plugs are a mandatory parameter. , which is not afraid of water (IPX7), is a good example of this.

On the bottom edge, in addition to the microphone, you can also find a place for attaching a strap, and on the top there is an audio output and another microphone. The back panel, like the front, is covered with protected glass. There you can find the Sony logo, the inscription “Xperia”, the “N” icon, which indicates the location of the NFC chip and, of course, the main camera peephole and flash. The Japanese are very proud of their camera, so they unobtrusively placed the “20.7 MP” mark next to it.

In general, the device can be safely given a solid “A” for its appearance, build quality and body materials. Nothing creaks or plays. The only problem is fingerprints. They are visible very well. Although this problem is solved in just a few seconds by a regular napkin. The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact feels great in your hands. However, I have to admit that it was difficult to get used to after my 6-inch Lumia 1520.

Display

We figured out the display diagonal and its resolution at the very beginning of the review - 4.6 inches and 1280 x 720 pixels. There was no point in Full HD here, and the company did the right thing by not chasing dry numbers. HD is quite enough for such sizes that you cannot see individual pixels on the screen - 319 PPI. Glove control is provided, and up to 10 touches are supported simultaneously.

Everything is fine with viewing angles, maximum and minimum brightness, and font readability. The only thing worth understanding is that a small screen (although a few years ago a 4.6-inch smartphone seemed gigantic) means a small keyboard. When typing, you often press the wrong key. It would seem that this is also a matter of habit, but during the test I never managed to get the hang of it.

Camera

The main camera received 20.7 MP, and the front camera received 2.2 MP. In terms of software, everything is pretty good (although, as we remember, this was not always the case; the company made a noticeable step only in its latest devices). There are a lot of modes here. The only funny thing is that the maximum quality (that is, 20 MP) can only be selected in manual mode; in the rest, 8 MP is used. Although let's face it, for most daily tasks this is sufficient. You can also shoot videos in 4K and broadcast live on YouTube. Bloggers, rejoice! Yulia spoke in more detail about the camera’s capabilities in her .

But, as they say, it’s better to watch once than to read seven times (or something like that). Here are some sample pictures:

I was very pleased with the quality of the pictures. Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is the case when 20-megapixel (and even 8-megapixel) quality is not a shame. It often happens that there seem to be a lot of megapixels, but the pictures are such that even on Instagram with one subscriber you can’t even raise your hand to upload them. But in our case everything is different. The camera is good. I would even say that it is very good.

Features and software

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is a true flagship! Here you have a Snapdragon 801 (4 Krait 400 cores, 2.5 GHz), and 2 GB of RAM (we have already found out that the Z3 has 3 GB of RAM), and an Adreno 330 graphics accelerator. The smartphone copes with games and other demanding tasks excellently. This is quite expected, because such hardware, paired with a not very high resolution, is capable of a lot. Asphalt 8 starts with maximum graphics, and Dead Trigger 2, despite average parameters, does not slow down even in dynamic scenes (where everything explodes and crowds of zombies are running towards you). In various tests, the smartphone also showed its best side: 45 thousand in AnTuTu, 20 thousand in Quadrant and 19 thousand in 3DMark. During the entire time I tested the device, I did not notice any shortcomings even when flipping through desktops normally (although this is more likely a matter of proper optimization of the proprietary shell). The operating system used here is Android (wow, what a surprise!) version 4.4.4.

As for the built-in memory, there is 16 GB of it. MicroSD cards up to 128 GB are also supported. But autonomy is a completely different matter. The Sony smartphone is clearly one of the best in this regard. The thing is that the manufacturer managed to install a battery with a capacity of 2600 mAh in such a compact case. For example, the same battery is installed in, but there is already a Full HD screen. If we talk about the “lifetime” of the Xperia Z3 Compact, then the device will last one and a half or even two days. This is during normal use (social networks, email, a little YouTube, calls, e-reader). If you squeeze all the juice out of the phone (play games all the time, watch movies and all that), then the charge will last for 10 hours. There is also a STAMINA mode in the settings, which will make the Z3 Compact immortal. For example, at 32 percent, the program promises 7 hours of battery life, and when energy saving is activated, this figure increases to some sky-high indicators - 1 day and 16 hours!

All technical specifications look like this:

  • Dimensions: 64.9 x 127 x 8.6 mm.
  • Weight: 129 grams.
  • Operating system: Android 4.4.4.
  • Processor: quad-core Snapdragon 801 with a clock speed of 2.5 GHz.
  • Graphics: Adreno 330.
  • Display: IPS, 4.6 inches, 1280 x 720 pixels.
  • Memory: 16 GB + microSD slot.
  • RAM: 2 GB.
  • Camera: main - 20.7 MP, front - 2.2 MP.
  • Battery: 2600 mAh.

Eventually

The positioning of the phone fully explains its name. Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is not a mini version of the Xperia Z3 with simplified characteristics, but simply a compact version of it. Before us is a real flagship in a small package. He has very few controversial points. The only things I can complain about are the keys on the right side (they are located too close) and the price. If the amount of 490 dollars still sounds acceptable, then 13 thousand hryvnia or 32 thousand rubles is somehow too much (but the company itself is unlikely to be able to help customers in any way here). Otherwise, I really liked the smartphone: high-quality camera, good screen, beautiful appearance, powerful hardware and long life on a single charge. If you've been dreaming of a flagship device with a small screen for the past few years, then the Xperia Z3 Compact may be just about the only viable option.

The fashion for mini-smartphones has not yet passed. Various manufacturers every now and then announce smaller versions of their flagships, counting on a decent level of sales due to the sounding and memorable name. Unfortunately, in most cases this is pure, unadulterated marketing in the bad sense of the word. Mini-copies often have nothing in common with flagships, except for a vaguely similar design, and their technical content leaves much to be desired. We swam - we know.

The present mini flagship from Sony, which appeared last year along with Xperia Z1. It really was a smaller copy of the older device: platform, camera - all the technical stuff of the compact version was borrowed from the flagship. “Compact” even took over its protection against dust and moisture. The only differences were the size and resolution of the display - for 4.3 inches Full HD is simply not necessary. Sony understood this and decided not to waste resources.

In our memory, the Z1 Compact is one of the most productive smartphones with a 4.3-inch screen diagonal. Literally a gift that has no analogues for those who wanted a compact but powerful gadget. Obviously, Sony decided to update the Compact once a year, unlike the usual “Zetok”. And to avoid a lag in the serial number, the number 2 in the new generation of the “compact” had to be omitted. So welcome to Sony Xperia Z3 Compact! Before testing begins, we note that the Z1 Compact dropped to a very “tasty” fifteen thousand rubles in various online stores. For such a price this is truly a gift! It’s all the more interesting to see if there’s anything in the Z3 Compact that will make the user pay about seven thousand more for it.

Appearance and ergonomics

Let's start with the obvious. Smartphones with a screen diagonal of 4.6 inches are no longer in fashion - we have already begun to forget how convenient it is to use them. The Z3 Compact fits easily into any pocket without sticking out. The device is really easy to operate with one hand - even the fair sex does not have to reach with its thumb to any of the four edges. Your hands don’t get tired from prolonged interaction with this gadget, because it weighs less than 130 grams.

Sony engineers pleasantly surprised us by increasing the display of the Compact - from 4.3 to 4.6 inches, but leaving the dimensions of the device the same. They are the same for both Compact models: 127 mm in height and 65 mm in width. It is noteworthy that the thickness of the case was reduced by almost a millimeter - from 9.5 mm to 8.6 mm. In general, the Z3 Compact turned out to be even smaller than its predecessor.

The layout of the keys and connectors on the device is the same as on the vast majority of Android smartphones - you get used to the Z3 Compact very quickly. Perhaps the main innovation in terms of design can be considered the transfer of the external speaker to the front panel - the calculation is that the phone is usually placed on the table “face up”, so that the speaker will not be covered.

The signature round power key, made of aluminum, now has a slightly larger size. Next to it is a rocker button for adjusting the volume and a dedicated hardware camera key. All buttons have a short and distinct stroke.

The side edges of the body of the new “Compact” are made of transparent plastic. Due to this, it seems that they are concave, although in reality they are, of course, convex. The inscriptions on the ends cast a shadow “deeper” into the smartphone - an interesting optical effect. There are special inserts at the corners of the case that protect the case from impacts when dropped. Whether this works is unknown: we did not dare to check.

The card slots here are hidden under special plastic plugs in order to maintain the tightness of the structure. The device is protected from dust and moisture according to IP65/68 standards. The manufacturer states that if all the plugs are tightly closed, the gadget can be in fresh water at a depth of up to one and a half meters for no more than thirty minutes.

Under one flap there is a Micro-USB interface and a slot for a microSD memory card, under the other there is a slot for Nano-SIM. Between them is a traditional Sony magnetic connector for connecting the device to the docking station. At the top end there is a universal 3.5 mm audio jack for connecting a wired headset, and at the bottom there is a loop for a strap.

The “back” of the new Compact is made of glass, while its predecessor was made of plastic. Despite this, the smartphone does not slip in your hands at all, and it looks much more expensive and interesting than the previous version ( The opinion of the author may not coincide with the opinion of the editors. — approx. ed. ). On the back panel there is a lens of the main 20-megapixel camera along with a diode flash.

The available range of colors for the Z3 Compact is its own - it has nothing in common with either the colors of the “regular” Xperia Z3 or the colors of the Z1 Compact. This season, Sony designers, along with the traditional black and white colors, offer bright orange and mint green. In promotional photographs, the new colors look very interesting and unusual. Obviously they will resonate among young people.
