Camera resolution is the number of horizontal and vertical points from which an image is formed.
In 2018, good quality from a CCTV camera can be safely called FULL-HD 1920x1080 and higher, where 1920 is the number of horizontal pixels, 1080 is the number of vertical pixels. An analogy can be drawn with the quality of videos that you can watch at home on a home theater. The lower the resolution, the worse the video quality will be and vice versa. It can be called a reference. The disadvantage of such video surveillance systems will be the high cost of all its components: video cameras, DVR, hard drive, TV or monitor with 4K support, and the recording will take up much more disk space.
Below is a table to evaluate video quality depending on camera resolution.

Permission table
Number of megapixels CCTV Camera Resolution Generally accepted standard designation Description Our subjective assessment of video image quality Advantages and disadvantages
0.02Mp 176x120 QCIF CCTV cameras with such low resolution are hopelessly behind the times, but they can still be found at various operating sites. They can detect movement and recognize a person’s figure. Badly - Poor detail
- Outdated equipment
0.08Mp 352x240 CIF
0.1Mp 352x288 CIF
0.2Mp 704x240 2CIF
0.4Mp 704x480 4CIF
0.4Mp 704x576 D1 (420TVL)
0.6Mp 960x576 960H Cameras can still be found on sale; careless sellers are trying to sell them to people who do not understand this issue. The cost is about the same as 1MP. - Poor detail
- Outdated equipment
- Cost ~ like 1mp
+ Can be used as dummies
1MP 1280x720 720p Has average resolution. Suitable for understanding the overall picture of what is happening, who is where. Average + Low price
+ Allows you to control the situation
+ The recording archive takes up little space on your hard drive compared to higher resolution
- Difficulty identifying a stranger
1.3MP 1280x960 960p 4:3 image format differs from 1MP in its increased vertical viewing angle, which is sometimes very useful.
Half 2MP 960x1080 1080N A stripped-down version of 2MP FullHD cameras. The number of horizontal lines is two times less. The quality is better than 1MP, but worse than full-fledged 2MP.
2Mp 1600x1200 4:3 image format Why did we include a 2MP video camera in this category? Because these are already old models that are inferior in sharpness and color reproduction to modern 2MP ones. Even modern 1.3MP ones look more worthy than the old models that came to us for review). - Blurred picture (with samples that came to us)
- Unjustifiably high cost of professional models (with samples that came to us)
+ Allows you to control the situation
2.1Mp (usually they say 2Mp) 1920x1080 1080p Has good resolution. Allows you to identify a person. At large viewing angles it gives good detail and a clear picture. Fine + High resolution and good image detail
+ Human identification and number plate recognition
+ Good price/quality ratio
+ No increased requirements for local network bandwidth
3.1 MP 2048x1536
4Mp 2304x1728
4Mp 2592x1520
5Mp 2560x1920
5Mp 2592x1920
6Mp 2736x2192
8.3Mp 3840×2160 4K Great + Excellent detail and recognition of even the smallest details of the video image
+ Ability to use high resolution as digital zoom
- Price. Prices for such equipment are usually high
- Increased requirements for LAN bandwidth
- The recording archive takes up quite a lot of space.

Using low CIF and D1 resolutions today.
Modern digital IP cameras and DVRs allow you to select the same old CIF and D1 as a sub stream. Why do you need a picture with obviously worse resolution?

Sub stream - an auxiliary stream from a video surveillance camera, with a deliberately low resolution - is used to display video on mobile devices or when displaying images on the screen from several video cameras at once, thereby reducing the load on the local network and on the video recorder processor, which is already busy saving video with maximum quality to your hard drive.

With the help of D1, we can remotely view videos even at low Internet speeds, which you will agree is very convenient.
We can change the parameters of video streams on the DVR in the “Compression” menu item by selecting the desired camera channel.
Surveillance cameras with ultra-high 4k resolutions can support not two streams, but three. This makes it possible to more flexibly set up the broadcast from the camera. For example, the main stream with maximum resolution is broadcast to the operator, the second stream with slightly worse quality is broadcast over the enterprise’s local network, and the third stream in D1 is used for remote viewing via the Internet. The purpose of this article is to eliminate confusion in the resolution designations of video surveillance cameras and help understand how much memory is needed to record video with a particular resolution.

Image quality designations used in signal standards (IP, HD-TVI, AHD)

Resolution (“resolution” of recording or “frame size” of video) is determined by the number of pixels (dots) when digitizing an image (horizontally and vertically, respectively).

Designation “Mp, Mpx, Mp” (1 Mp; 1.3 Mpx; 2.1 Mp)

MP is the total number of megapixels (millions of dots) obtained by multiplying the number of columns (horizontal dots) by the number of rows (vertical dots). For example, for a 1080p camera: 1920 columns multiplied by 1080 rows and we get 2MP (more precisely, 2.07MP, but usually this is referred to as 2MP or 2.1MP).

Designation "p" (720p, 960p,1080p, 2160p)

Number with symbol "p" corresponds to the total number of lines in this video (the number of points in the frame vertically). For example, a video designated as 720p contains 720 lines of pixels (for a total area of 1.3Mp). A video referred to as 1080p contains 1080 lines of pixels (for a total area of 2.1Mp). Finally, a video referred to as 2160p contains 2160 lines of pixels (for a total area of 8.3Mp).

The icon itself "R" indicates progressive scanning (as opposed to interlaced). Nowadays, almost all video surveillance cameras have progressive scan, so the “p” icon in this sense no longer plays a special meaning.

Designations "H and K" (960H, 2K, 4K)

Designation "H and K" indicates the number of columns (horizontal points), expressed by H - in units, K - in thousands and rounded. For example, a video labeled 4K contains about 4000 columns of pixels. In reality, 4K video contains either 3840 columns or 4096 columns, although in video surveillance it is almost always 3840.

Video quality designations used in outdated analog video surveillance systems (D1, DCIF, 2CIF, CIF, QCIF, 380TVL, 420TVL, 480TVL, 560TVL, 600TVL, 800TVL, 1000TVL) conversion to megapixels and their differences

TVL(television lines) is an interesting unit of measurement determined from test charts during camera testing and denotes the number of vertical lines (visible brightness transitions) in the frame. Essentially, this is the number of pixels horizontally in the frame, multiplied by a factor of 0.65 (to take into account the inevitable loss of clarity during the process of converting and processing the video signal). The vertical resolution in pixels is strictly specified by the number of lines in the television standard (576 in European and 480 in American) and does not change depending on the camera resolution declared by the manufacturer. Therefore, resolutions of more than 420 TVL, transmitted in the usual analogue television standard, can be called not entirely fair, since they provide increased clarity only horizontally.

TVL (television lines) Pixels (horizontal x vertical) Megapixels (Mp, MPx)
380TVL 640x480 px 0.3 MP
420TVL 720x576 px 0.36 MP
honest 480TVL 800x600px 0.5 MP
honest 560TVL 933x700 px 0.65 MP
honest 600TVL 1024x756 px 0.75 MP
honest 800TVL 1280x960px 1.23 MP
honest 1000TVL 1600x1200 px 1.92 MP

D1— “full” frame, image size 704x576— allows you to get maximum image quality when using a high-resolution analog camera (more than 540 TVL)

DCIF— “extended” frame, image size 528x384. Compared to D1, it is characterized by a 30% loss of original information.

2CIF— “long” frame, image size 704x288— one image field is used, but with maximum horizontal resolution. It is characterized by good horizontal resolution and allows you to reduce the volume of the created archive by almost 2 times compared to D1. However, the low vertical resolution does not allow video recording in narrow surveillance areas (surveillance along a corridor). Mainly used for panoramic viewing.

CIF- “quarter” frame, image size 352x288— truncated field. Typically used only when observing over a network with limited channel capacity, as well as recording the general situation with small viewing areas (from 3 to 5 m). At the same time, the small volume of the video stream allows you to dramatically increase the duration of the archive.

What size hard drive is needed for a DVR?

Based on the table below, you can calculate how many gigabytes per hour All cameras will be transmitted to the DVR.

Table of volume (GB) per hour of recording of CCTV cameras for H.264 codec at resolution D1, 1Mp (1280*720), 2Mp (1920*1080), 3Mp(2048*1536), 5M(2560x1920) at frame rate 8, 12, 25 fps and varying traffic intensity.

To reduce the amount of stored video information, DVRs use various compression algorithms.

The main advantage of the algorithm H.264 is inter-frame compression, in which for each next frame its differences from the previous one are determined, and only these differences are stored in the archive after compression. When the algorithm operates, reference frames (I-frames), which are a compressed full image, are periodically saved in the archive, and then for 25-100 frames only changes, called intermediate frames (P- and B-frames), are saved. This compression method allows you to obtain high image quality with a small volume, but requires more calculations than standard compression MJPEG.

When using the algorithm MJPEG Each frame is compressed, regardless of whether it differs from the previous one. Therefore, the only way to reduce the amount of stored data is to increase compression and thereby reduce the recording quality. This method is used only in simple standalone video recorders that do not require long-term storage of information.

Another advantage of the algorithm H.264 is its ability to operate in constant bit rate (CBR) mode, in which the degree of compression of video information changes dynamically and thus clearly records the volume of the created archive in one second. This feature of the algorithm makes it possible to unambiguously determine the maximum archive volume per hour of continuous system operation, as well as the necessary network traffic for remote access.

– this is an image unit, that is, minimal points with a certain shade, from which a raster image of a photograph or video frame is composed. The more dots and the smaller their size, the better the image the eyes see due to the inability to separate very small dots from one another.

Using the concept of megakipsel

There are several different ways to characterize the number of pixels that make up any image. Firstly, this is the size of the picture in the number of pixels, that is, how many pixels fit in the width and length of the picture, for example 1920X1200. Secondly, it is the number of pixels that fit on one square inch. You can find this parameter in the characteristics of smartphone or monitor screens, for example 260 dpi (dot per inch). Thirdly, these are the same megapixels that determine the total number of pixels in the entire image.

Megapixels are obtained by multiplying the number of pixels by the width and length of the image. For example, for a picture with a resolution of 1920X1200, you can calculate approximately 2.3 megapixels. Much or little depends mainly on the size in centimeters or inches of the picture when a person views it.

In the context of photo and video equipment, megapixels determine the dimension of the matrix. As a result, this will determine the maximum size of the resulting image, at which the pixel size will be small enough and will not be noticeable individually, making up a single image with neighboring pixels.

What does megapixel mean?

What megapixels can characterize is the size of the image in bytes, kilobytes and megabytes, and accordingly you can judge the space on a memory card or hard drive that the image will occupy. As a result, you can calculate the maximum number of images themselves that will fit on the media.
The size of the resulting photo is also affected by the file format in which the image is saved. The format determines the degree of compression and archiving, when not every pixel is saved individually.

To understand the optimal number of megapixels, for example when choosing a camera, you can make simple calculations. If the bulk of photographs, for example, will be printed on A4 sheets with optimal print quality of 300dpi, then it is easy to calculate the number of megapixels in the picture that this will require. The A4 size is 8.3x11.7 inches, that is, 2490x3510 pixels or approximately 8.7 megapixels with the selected print quality.

Igor is going to install an AHD video surveillance system in his grocery store. He knows that the system usually contains several megapixel cameras and one recorder, but he cannot decide whether to get 1.3 megapixel or 2 megapixel cameras. Semyon is a sales representative for security and video surveillance systems. His company offers a wide range of megapixel security cameras with different resolutions. He usually recommends a high-definition video surveillance system to his clients, simply because he knows its features better, and it is more profitable for the seller. You probably have similar questions about choosing CCTV cameras. In this article, we are going to provide you with comprehensive information for choosing CCTV cameras.

1. What is a high definition CCTV camera?

All image formats with a resolution of 1280x720 or higher are considered high definition (HD). In the modern world of video surveillance, there are two directions: analog and digital. Accordingly, there are analog and network (IP) HD cameras. 960H (NTSC: 960x480) resolution is not HD. Current HD resolution formats include: 1.0 megapixel (720p), 1.3 megapixel (960p), 2 megapixel (1080p), 3 megapixel, 5 megapixel, 8 megapixel (4K UHD), 12 megapixel, 33 megapixel (8K UHD) .
As a rule, network HD cameras provide slightly better image quality than analog HD cameras of the same resolution (for example, 720p).
Recently, one of our clients reported that they had installed a video surveillance system on 720p AHD cameras (the manufacturer stated 1000TVL) and were dissatisfied: the image quality of these 720p AHD cameras turned out to be even worse than that of the old 960H cameras. We will tell you why this happened in the fourth part of the article.

2. The benefits of high definition

Compared to standard definition, HD technology has increased image detail. The image quality is further enhanced by various enhancement technologies such as Progressive Scan, 2D/3D Dynamic Noise Reduction, Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), etc. In short, HD provides superior picture quality. A typical 960H analogue camera provides a resolution of 960H/WD1, which is 960x480 pixels (for NTSC) or 960x576 pixels (for PAL). Once the signal is digitized in a DVR or hybrid video recorder, the image will consist of a maximum of 552960 pixels (0.5 megapixels).
A high definition camera can cover a much wider area than a regular camera. Let's take for example a 12-megapixel panoramic camera with a fisheye lens with a 360-degree viewing angle. With a built-in 12MP image sensor and ePTZ (virtual pan/tilt/zoom) and image splitting capabilities, it can replace multiple conventional CCTV cameras at once, significantly reducing installation costs and subsequent maintenance fees.
Excellent compatibility is another advantage of HD. Whether you're shopping online or visiting your local electronics store, you've noticed that all TVs, camcorders, and digital cameras support HD 1080p (FullHD). Accordingly, if you want this equipment to work with your CCTV system, you should choose a CCTV system that supports 1080p. Also we understand that 4K is the current trend, it is logical to expect that 4K UHD CCTV system will become popular in the future.

3. Various HD resolution formats

High-definition IP cameras occupy a central place in video surveillance systems. They can provide higher quality video with greater image detail and wider coverage than standard definition cameras. You can choose the right network (IP) camera format to suit your requirements. For example, for facial recognition or license plate recognition applications, choose megapixel network cameras with a resolution of 1080p or more. To find out the resolution of a particular HD format, refer to the following table:

Format Resolution (pixels) Aspect Ratio Scan
1MP/720P 1280x720 16:9 Progressive
SXGA/960P 1280x960 4:3 Progressive
1.3MP 1280x1024 5:4 Progressive
2MP/1080P 1920x1080 16:9 Progressive
2.3MP 1920x1200 16:10 Progressive
3MP 2048x1536 4:3 Progressive
4MP 2592x1520 16:9 Progressive
5MP 2560x1960 4:3 Progressive
6MP 3072x2048 3:2 Progressive
4K Ultra HD 3840x2160 16:9 Progressive
8K Ultra HD 7680x4320 16:9 Progressive

4 Selecting an HD CCTV camera

Besides image resolution, what else should you consider when choosing HD network cameras? Here we will share information on how to choose the right HD cameras from an installer's point of view.

Low illumination

As you know, a CCTV camera works differently than a consumer camera - a CCTV camera cannot use flash when capturing images/videos. If a camera has poor low-light performance, its use is limited. When working in low light conditions, such a camera will go blind, despite its very high resolution.

High resolution is a double-edged sword: the sensor manufacturer does not have the ability to endlessly increase the crystal area, so increasing the resolution is associated with a decrease in the size of the pixel itself for the same dimensions of the sensor crystal (usually 1/3""), so there is less light per pixel , which leads to a decrease in sensitivity as the resolution (megapixels) increases.

Currently, the optimal value for most areas of video surveillance is a resolution of 2 MP (1080p/FullHD); it is for this resolution that most sensors from the Low Illumination series exist.

Video delay (Time lag)

All network (IP) security cameras have some latency compared to real time, and the cost or quality of the camera does not determine the amount of this latency. For example, for the same 720p image, the video latency time for some cameras is 0.1s, and for some other network cameras this time can be 0.4s, and even more than 0.7s. Why is the video delay time different? Unlike an analog camera, a network camera compresses the video (a process called encoding), and user devices decode the video for display, resulting in video latency. Typically, the lower the latency, the better the image processor's capabilities. This means choosing a network camera with the lowest video latency.

Heat dissipation

When a security camera is running, it generates heat, especially when the infrared light is turned on at night. This rule applies to any CCTV camera. Excessive heat generation increases the likelihood of overheating and, as a result, damage to the camera. When choosing megapixel cameras, pay attention to:

Choose a camera with lower power consumption. Low power consumption means the camera saves energy and generates less heat. The downside: in winter, a camera with low heat generation may freeze (usually this concerns the IR filter), and low consumption means that a weak IR illumination is installed, this should also be taken into account.

Consider using a camera with improved low-light performance (no infrared or other artificial lighting). Such a low-light camera can capture images even in darkness (>0.009 - 0.001 lux).

Choose a camera with a body that has good heat dissipation. A metal case is preferable to a plastic one. To ensure reliable performance, the Elite Series network cameras adopt a finned heatsink on the body to maximize heat dissipation, which greatly helps the camera in ensuring reliable performance.

Price

""High price = high quality"" - in most cases this rule is true. Based on research reports, consumers often believe that a higher price for a product indicates a higher level of quality. But price is not the only indicator of good quality, especially when purchasing “Made in China” products. I have been working in the CCTV industry for over five years and I can attest that end users, integrators and installers can get high quality products from Chinese suppliers/manufacturers at a very competitive price. High-quality cameras may have unique body designs and offer special features not found in other products.

Technical support

In conclusion, network cameras should also have good technical support. Although IP cameras are becoming increasingly easier to set up and operate, end users may encounter technical issues that require outside assistance. If you encounter such a problem, you will receive technical support from us within 1-2 days, this is quite acceptable. It is because of this that I personally do not recommend buying CCTV cameras on Aliexpress, since in the future you are unlikely to receive technical support from sellers and prompt support.
