Connecting a tp link repeater. How to set up a wireless bridge (WDS) between two Wi-Fi routers? We use the router as a "Repeater"

An ordinary router, even if it is very fashionable, modern and decorated with four formidable antennas, has a limited coverage radius.
And if there are obstacles in the form of walls with metal reinforcement in the way of its signal, then the coverage area of our device decreases very significantly.

For an ordinary city apartment, the coverage of one router, as a rule, is enough. But a private house with two or three floors has a lot of “dead zones”, where our Wi-Fi devices are confused looking for a network, and when they find it, they cannot firmly cling to it.

And there are places in the house where the laptop still works this way and that, and the smartphone no longer sees the home wireless network and switches to 3G.
Not to mention the plots in the yard and various buildings on its territory.

In order for the Internet to “catch” everywhere, it is necessary to increase the coverage area of \u200b\u200bthe main router.
We will not talk here about amplifying the router itself with high-powered antennas or other miracle amplifiers.
If the router is far away or behind serious obstacles, then all of them are ineffective.

This problem can be solved in two ways.
Or stretch a special "wire" and install an "access point", that is, another router that will be connected to the main device with a twisted pair cable.
It will receive a signal from it, distributing the Internet to all devices around it.

Or, what we are going to talk about today, put the so-called repeater or wifi repeater.
His task is to build wireless bridge from the main router to the point where you want to get good coverage.
This is the easiest way that does not require additional installation work, some drilling and hammering ...

But our repeater must “see” the main router, that is, be in its coverage area in order to qualitatively relay (repeat) the signal.
If it is too far, then you will, of course, get the Internet, but you will lose speed, that is, quality.
If we can lay the cable even into a deep basement, where there is no WIFI network from the main router at all, then such a trick will not work with a repeater.

But our repeater can be moved to any place where there is at least some signal from the main router and ... a 220V socket.
You just need to check with your smartphone how good the signal is where you plan to put the repeater.
To do this, you need not only to see the Wi-Fi divisions on your phone, but also download some kind of video and see if it goes at all.
Or measure the speed, if you know how.
Everything works? Perfectly put here our repeater.
It remains only to configure it.

We will consider routers as an example. Tp Link And ASUS as the most common in our market.

How to set up an ASUS repeater

So, we need to connect the Asus router via wifi network to the main router in repeater mode.
We connect to it via a cable with an RJ45 connector.
This is the cord that usually comes with the router. We connect one end of it to the computer, and the other to one of the four identical ports in the router.
As it shown on the picture

We connect with a cable to one of the four LAN ports (yellow)

If you access the router from a laptop, then turn off the wi-fi network on it so that there is no conflict with the main router.

After that, in the address bar of your browser, fill in the address of the router: 192.168.1.1 .
If you can't access this address, try the address 192.168.0.1 .
If after that you still can’t get to the router, then you need to restore the factory settings (see the instructions for the router).

After connecting, enter the login admin and password admin.

If the initial configuration of the router has already been performed, then you will see something like this picture:

Asus router main window. To select the repeater mode, press the button circled in red

Next, we need to switch to repeater mode.
This stage is also present during the initial configuration of the router, which we do not show. There we also select the repeater mode.
After selection, press the button Save to go to the settings for this feature.

Select Repeater Mode...

In the next step, you will open all the wi-fi networks that the router has found within its range.
You need to select the network you want to connect to. That is, the network of your main router.
At the same time, we evaluate the signal strength so that it is not too weak. Otherwise, there will be speed losses.

By choosing a network, we can evaluate the signal level from the donor router. If there is a choice of which network to connect to, then here you can clearly see the best

After selecting the network, click on it and enter the password for the main router. The one with which you connect your phones and smartphones.
We press the button Connection

Enter the network key (wifi password) to connect to the main router

In the next step, you are prompted to enter network name Repeater (Repeater) and indicate which one will password on the wifi network in the new device (at least eight characters).

We name the repeater network that your phone will see and come up with a password for wifi

The connection is made, and after Network configured, you can once again see the entered data: network name, password, encryption type and received internal IP address.

At the setup stage - a brief instruction on how to connect to a new network via Wi-Fi

Click To complete and the main window of the router opens to us already in Repeater mode, the so-called Network map.
If you compare the menu of the Repeater with the menu of the main router of a similar or similar model, you will notice that they are significantly reduced.

You are connected!

Now all your phones, tablets, laptops and other wifi devices need to be connected to the repeater.
After that, when they are out of range of your main router or its network is weak, Internet access will go through a stronger Wi-Fi network of the repeater.

How to set up a TP-LINK repeater

Setting up a TP-LINK router in repeater mode is more cumbersome than that of ASUS, so you need to carefully follow all the points so that "it works and does not fall off."

First of all, you need to get to the main router and set the channel (frequency) on which it will work with the repeater and all your devices.

By default, the router itself selects the channel, that is, the frequency for communication with your phones, tablets, laptops and other equipment.
This scheme is not suitable for setting up a repeater.

In this case, there is no need to connect with a cable to the main router, since we are connected to it via a Wi-Fi network.
You can also do this operation from a desktop computer, if you have one.

If your "master" router is also TP-LINK, then you need to go to it by setting the ip address in the address bar of the browser 192.168.0.1 , or tplinkwifi.net.

Enter login and password. (Default admin)
Let's go to the menu.
There we find the line Channel and install, for example 6 . You can use any, but choosing an average would be more rational.
Be sure to press Save in the end.

Channel selection on the main router

Now we connect via the cable that comes with the router to our future repeater. We insert one end of the cable into a laptop (network card), and the other end into one of the LAN connectors (see the example above for the Asus router).

After the laptop and the router have seen each other, we drive in the address bar of the browser:
192.168.0.1 or //tplinkwifi.net, just like you logged into the main router when you set up the channel.
Enter login admin and password admin

Tp-Link router login window

If everything worked out with the entrance to the router, then you will see its menu.
It is necessary to select the item Net and subparagraph LAN.
Here we need to do an important operation - set the ip address for our repeater. He must be on the same subnet with the main router, but have a different address so that there is no conflict.

If the ip address of your main router was 192.168.0.1 (you went to it when you changed the channel), then assign the repeater 192.168.0.2 .
If the main router has some other address, for example, 192.168.1.1, then we assign 192.168.1.2 to the repeater.
If the main is 192.168.3.1, then the repeater is 192.168.3.2.
Well, and so on ...
Click Save and confirm our strong desire to change the IP address when the router asks us again.

Changing the IP address for the internal network

We confirm our intentions. After that, the router goes to reboot

It reboots and the login window opens again, where we fill in the login and password to enter the router.
If you look at the address bar, you will notice that there is already a new address that we just changed.
At this address, in the future, it will be possible to go to the repeater to adjust any settings (for example, change the password for the Wi-Fi network).

The next step is to go to the menu. WPS and disable this feature, as it will interfere with our further configuration.
There is no reboot of the router.

Disable WPS - we don't need it

Now let's go to the menu Wireless Setting and there we set the same channel as on the main router.
After that we put the bird Enable WDS and press Save.

We set the channel number, as on the main router and turn on the repeater (bridge) mode

After that, new fields and buttons open in the settings. We find a button Search and press it.

Click "Search" to find our network to which we will connect

There is a search for all wifi networks that our custom router-repeater sees.
Among all this abundance, if you live in a city apartment, of course, select our network and press connect.

The list of networks in a city apartment can be quite large. And the network we don't always need will be first on the list. Find it and click "Connect"

In the next step, you need to enter the password for the router to which we are connecting.
We also write the name of our new wi-fi network in the topmost field.

Entering a password to connect to the main router

Correct connection can then be checked in the menu State, where opposite WDS Status must be a cherished word Installed.

Checking the "bridge" mode - repeater

If everything is fine, and you should be fine if you follow all the steps in sequence, go to the security settings of the new wireless network to set your favorite password.
Don't forget to click "Save" at the bottom of the page.

Set a password for a new Wi-Fi network

And the last thing that must be done is disable DHCP.

Choose DHCP - DHCP Settings - Disable
Click Save and the router goes to reboot.

Disable DHCP, otherwise the repeater will not work stably

Everything. After that, you can connect to our repeater via Wi-Fi or cable by inserting it into one of the LAN ports (usually there are four of them in the router).

See how simple it is! And someone did not believe, said that he could not ...

A Wi-Fi repeater (or repeater) is a device whose task is to relay the signal from a wireless router or access point. It is used to expand the coverage of a wireless network. Many modern models of equipment can operate in different modes:

  • access point (AP=Access Point);
  • repeater;
  • universal repeater;
  • wireless network client;
  • bridge with hotspot function.

Operating modes of wireless equipment

If you want to use the wireless repeater function today, you need to look for equipment that is referred to in the manufacturers' catalogs as:

  • Access point (in English terminology Wireless Access Point) ;
  • Wireless repeater or wireless signal booster(in English terminology Range Extender) ;

Attention! Routers (i.e. routers) rarely have wireless repeater functionality these days. Some router models can be used as a repeater by installing alternative DD-WRT firmware. However, on alternative firmware, the device may be unstable.

Take an inexpensive access point as an example TP Link TL-WA701ND. But the instruction is also suitable for other models like TL-WA730RE, TL-WA801ND and similar.

The device can operate in several modes:

Access point mode

Convert your existing wired network to wireless.

Repeater mode

Expanding the coverage of an existing Wi-Fi network by relaying a wireless signal.

Wireless client mode

The device functions as a wireless adapter to connect wired devices to a wireless network.

Bridge+AP mode

Connecting two local networks using a wireless channel.

What is the difference between a repeater and an access point

A wireless access point connects to a network with a cable and creates a wireless network around it. And the repeater mode implies both connecting to the network and retransmitting it exclusively via the radio channel.

Wi-Fi repeater setup

Before setting up the repeater, set the main router to a specific broadcast channel. If auto channel selection is set on the main router, the repeater will lose communication with it more often:

Different manufacturers have different equipment web interfaces, but the essence of setting up a wireless repeater is the same: in the device settings, you need to specify the MAC address (BSSID) of the main access point and its security settings. We will tell you how to set up network relay using the example of the same budget access point TP-Link TL-WA701ND, which can work in repeater mode.

Before setting up, place the signal repeater in the zone of reliable reception of the wireless network whose coverage you are going to expand. Later, when the relay setup is done, you can experiment by moving the repeater and observing the quality of the relay.

To connect the repeater to the head router or access point, you need to do the following:

1 Connect the repeater with an Ethernet cable (patch cord) in LAN-port of your existing router or access point:

You cannot connect to an unconfigured repeater via a wireless network, because it itself does not broadcast a wireless network and does not issue IP addresses. An exception may be if your repeater is set to access points and you will configure it from a device equipped with a Wi-Fi module. But we still recommend using a patch cord.

2 Connect to your main router's network from any computer, as you did before.

Go to the properties of the network adapter on the computer and manually assign an IP address from the same address range, which your new wireless repeater (or access point with repeater function) is set to (). Read the instructions for the device and you will find out exactly what its default IP address is. Often the IP address is also indicated on the bottom of the device:

If we talk about TP-Link equipment, then usually their routers have a default IP address of 192.168.0.1, and access points with a repeater function have an IP of 192.168.0.254.

Let's say the new repeater has an IP address of 192.168.0.254 by default. So, to configure it, you can temporarily assign the computer's network adapter an IP address of 192.168.0.20:

3 Go to the web interface of the repeater ().

By default, TP-Link equipment has credentials:

IP address: 192.168.0.254;
Login: admin;
Password admin.

4 Press EXIT to exit the setup wizard.

5 Go to the section network. The only setting in this section will be opened LAN.

As we said above, by default the device uses the IP address 192.168.0.254. If you are using a different address range on your network, set a new IP address from the same range. For example, if your router, the signal of which you are going to relay, operates on the 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.254 subnet, change the repeater address to 192.168.1.254 or any free one from the 192.168.1.* subnet.

When setting up a repeater, make sure that:

  • The IP address of the signal repeater belongs to the same subnet as the IP address of the main router;
  • there is no conflict between the addresses of the router, signal repeater and other devices on the network.

If your network uses addresses in the range 192.168.0.1-254 with a mask of 255.255.255.0, do not change the setting LAN on the repeater.
In this case, continue reading this manual with paragraph 8 with the words "Select a mode Repeater(Range Extender)«

In our example, we use the subnet 192.168.95.0.1-192.168.95.254. So let's change the IP address from 192.168.0.254 on the 192.168.95.254.

If you have changed the IP address of the access point, click Save

Then click OK in the next window to reboot the device:

Wait for the reboot to finish:

6 Because now the repeater will fall into the working range of IP addresses of your existing network, return the automatic receipt of parameters in the properties of the computer's network card:

7 Log in to the web interface of the repeater using the new IP address:

(if you did not change the IP address, then visit http://192.168.0.254 again)

8 Select a mode Repeater(Range Extender).

Click the button Save:

After changing the operating mode of the device, you need to reboot it again. Click OK to reboot the device:

Wait for the device to load:

9 Go to the section Wireless. This will open the setting. Wireless Settings.

The repeater mode has two subspecies: WDS Repeater And Universal Repeater. The easiest way is to use the Universal repeater. It will fit in most cases. Use WDS-repeater only if you know for sure that the root access point supports WDS.

After selecting the operating mode, you must specify the details of the main access point, whose signal should be relayed by the repeater. In field Wireless Name of Root AP enter the wireless network name (SSID) of the main access point, and in the field, the field MAC Address of Root AP enter the MAC address of the main access point.

There is a button in the web interface of TP-Link devices for this purpose. Survey (Search).

It is used to search for available wireless networks. By clicking on it, you can select any available wireless network and add it to the repeater with one click on the link Connect. In this case, you do not need to enter either the SSID or the MAC address of the access point (BSSID). These details will be filled in automatically.

After pressing the button Survey wait about 10-15 seconds until a window appears with a list of available wireless networks, and then click Connect in line with your network:

Click Save to save settings:

10 Go to setting Wireless Security.

Select the security mode that is used on the root access point (WPA2-Personal is recommended).

Enter the appropriate security key.

Click Save:

In the pop-up window, click OK:

11 Go to the section DHCP. This will open the setting. DHCP Settings.

Set the switch DHCP Server into position Disabled and press the button Save:

If you leave the DHCP server enabled, the Internet will not work on devices that will connect to the repeater.

12 Go to the section System Tools.

Click the button Reboot:

In the question window Are you sure to reboot the Device press the button OK:

Wait for the device to reboot:

13 Disconnect the patch cord from the device's LAN port.

After rebooting within 1-2 minutes, the device should connect to the root access point (or main router) and start relaying the signal. At the same time, the first indicator on the right should light up on the device:

Your devices, such as a smartphone, tablet, laptop, will see the same network as before, only the signal should become stronger by a few divisions. There is no need to do any reconnections on client devices, because the repeater relays the network with the same name and the same security settings.

How to check the operation of the repeater

Question: Why check? After all, if the devices are connected to the network, then everything is in order?

Answer: This statement is false. Devices may connect to a more remote access point or router, and the repeater may not function. Therefore, the verification should be approached more scrupulously.

Method 1. Try to access the web interface of the access point after disconnecting the patch cord from its LAN port.

Go to page Status. If in the area Wireless you see the SSID of the relayed network and the signal strength of the root access point, and in the area traffic statistics- the number of packets sent and received, then the signal repeater is functioning correctly:

Method 2: Launch the application WiFi Analyzer on Android device ().

You should see two APs with the same SSID running on the same channel:

TP-LINK is known as a manufacturer of functional yet affordable and easy-to-configure types of communication devices. Among the popular types of products offered by this market brand are repeaters, as well as routers with the corresponding function. What are the main features of both types of devices? How are they configured?

What is a repeater?

A repeater is a device that allows you to amplify the Wi-Fi signal from your router. The need for its use arises if the power of the router is not enough to ensure the functioning of the wireless network within the area of the room or office. The functionality of the repeater, in principle, corresponds to that which characterizes the operation of the router. That is, when connecting to a wireless network through a repeater, the user has the right to expect the same performance from the network infrastructure as if the connection was made directly to the router.

It can be noted that as an alternative to using the devices in question, it may be possible to use the router itself, for example TP-LINK, in repeater mode. Consider how the device in question functions as an independent element of the infrastructure, as well as how to use the router in the appropriate mode.

What are the main features of TP-LINK repeaters?

First of all, it is worth noting that TP-LINK produces, among other things, repeaters, as part of a very large model range. If we talk specifically about devices of the type in question, then a typical solution that combines the features that are characteristic of most modern repeaters from TP-LINK can be called the TL-WA850RE device. In particular, this product has the following main advantages:

  • the TP-LINK TL-WA850RE repeater is capable of operating in the radio signal amplification mode, so that the wireless network can be expanded to a large area;
  • the device has small dimensions, thanks to which it can be installed even if there is little free space in the user's room or office;
  • if necessary, wired devices can also be connected to the router via the Ethernet port.

The device in question can quickly connect to Wi-Fi routers that have the WPS function, provided that the routers have the appropriate button. If such a connection was made once, then reconfiguration of the TP-LINK repeater is generally not required.

If we talk about the possibilities of communication using the Ethernet port, then solutions such as game consoles, SMART TVs, as well as various multimedia devices can be connected to the device. In this case, the device connected to the cable can, using the resources of the repeater, also be part of the wireless infrastructure.

The TP-LINK repeater in this modification is equipped with a fairly large number of LED indicators, through which you can, first of all, determine the location of the device. It is recommended to install the repeater in a location where at least 3 corresponding blue LEDs will be lit.

If necessary, the TP-LINK TL-WA850RE repeater can be used as a communication device through a special mobile application. This solution allows you to connect from your phone or tablet to a wireless network, and also allows you to control various options of the repeater.

Let us now consider how the TP-LINK repeater is configured.

Repeater Setup: Network Connection Settings

Before connecting the device in question to the router, attention should be paid to correctly configuring the second device. So, you will need to specify the following information in its parameters:

  • IP address;
  • the name of the network to which it connects;
  • encryption type;
  • password.

After the necessary settings have been made, you need to proceed to the next step in setting up the connection between the repeater and the router. It is noteworthy that it involves temporarily connecting the first device to the computer via cable - just the same using the Ethernet port. At the same time, while the TP-LINK repeater interacts with the PC, the router must be turned off.

Setting up the repeater via PC

In order to configure the device in question, you need to use the web interface for managing device options - through a browser. Having opened it, you need to select the Network function. After that, you need to check if the IP address of the repeater is in the same segment as the IP address of the router. That is, the first 3 groups of numbers in the IP address must match exactly. If at least 1 differs, you must enter the correct IP address in the repeater settings, which belongs to the corresponding segment. Then you need to save the settings by clicking on Save.

After that, you need to select the Quick Setup option in the web interface. After - click on Next, then - on Wireless. Then you need to select the Range Extender option and set the Operation Mode parameter for it. The next step is to search for a router on the network using the Search function. The connection must be made based on the network name that was defined for the router in the previous step. After selecting this option, click Save.

Setting up network protection: the nuances

Next, you need to configure, determining the optimal parameters in accordance with which the repeater, WiFi should work. TP-LINK allows, in particular, to set the level. To do this, select the Wireless option, after - Wireless Security. Then you should set the WPA2-PSK parameter, as well as the After method, enter the password corresponding to what is specified in the router settings. Then click Save.

Thus, the main task of the user when configuring the repeater is to enter the same settings into the device in question and into the router to which it connects.

Repeater setup: testing

After the configuration of the corresponding device has been completed, it is necessary to check how correctly the wireless network will function. To do this, select the System Tools option, then Diagnostic. After that, you must enter in the IP address field the address that is set for the router. Then you need to click on Start in order to start the testing mechanism.

TP-LINK router as a repeater

At the beginning of the article, we noted that an alternative to using a repeater in its absence or if it is necessary to build a wireless network infrastructure on an even larger scale can be to use a router in repeater mode. In particular, many of those devices that are produced by the TP-LINK brand have this function. Among such solutions is the TL-WA901N device. Consider then, TP-LINK as a repeater in the appropriate modification.

It can be noted that the router in this modification has the following capabilities:

  • data transfer within a Wi-Fi network at a speed of up to 300 Mbps;
  • ensuring the functioning of the wireless infrastructure in the modes of a router, WDS - that is, a repeater, a bridge;
  • quick setup of data transfer with encryption;

In addition, the device supports PoE technology - up to 30 meters, so that the router can be installed in hard-to-reach areas.

Now in more detail about using the "repeater" function of the TP-LINK router in the TL-WA901N modification. First of all, you need to carry out through a computer.

Router as a repeater: setup using a PC

To solve this problem, you need to connect to a PC using an RJ-45 network cable. After entering the "Control Panel" Windows, select the option "Network and Internet", then - "Network and Access Control Center". In the corresponding interface, you must select the option that allows you to change the settings of the adapter. After right-clicking, select the item "Local Area Connection", then - "Properties". In the interface that opens, you need to set the optimal connection parameters: the adapter's IP address, as well as the subnet mask.

The next step is to use the router management web interface, similar to what we used to configure the repeater. You need to open a browser and enter the IP address of the router in the address bar (usually it is indicated on the bottom of the router case). On the page that opens, you need to enter your username and password - in the general case, this is the word admin.

Directly in the control panel of the router, you must select the option "Wireless network", then - "Network settings". After - specify the correct options on the page that opens. The main thing here is to reflect that the router will be used as a universal or regular repeater (the second option must be selected if the WDS mode is activated). After that, you need to click on the search button, and in the list that opens, select the router that you want to relay. Then click on "Connect". After - save the settings.

The router should reboot.

Router as a repeater: setting up network security

The next step in configuring the TP-LINK router in repeater mode is to define the wireless network security settings. To solve this problem, you must select the "Connection security" option. It must reflect the parameters that are fully consistent with those installed in the router to which the custom device is connected. This is a very important nuance, because if the settings are different, then the relay will not function correctly.

After that, you need to reboot the device and check how the router functions as a repeater. To do this, go to the "Status" tab in the router management menu.

Router or repeater?

We studied how to configure a TP-LINK router as a repeater using the example of one of the popular modifications of routers, but the problem is solved in a similar way on other common devices of the TP-LINK line. The scheme we have considered can therefore be considered sufficiently unified. To configure different devices in order to use them in repeater mode, very similar software interfaces are used (apart from the nuance that they may differ in design language).

Both options for deploying a wireless network infrastructure can be considered equivalent in terms of ensuring the stability of its operation. In principle, it doesn’t matter if the original repeater is used or if a router is used in this (but it is desirable that both devices are released by the same brand - TP-LINK) quality. The repeater, from the point of view of ensuring the functioning of the network, may not be enough on the required scale, so it can be supplemented by a router that supports the function of a repeater with a similar level of stability and network service performance. Both devices can be interchanged because they actually perform the same function. In addition, according to similar principles, a setting adapted to the functionality of both TP-LINK devices is carried out. The repeater mode of the original device and the router are activated and work within the same algorithm.

The most important thing in setting up both types of devices is to keep the addressing parameters of the devices synchronized, as well as those related to ensuring the security of data exchange. The solution to this problem is facilitated, again, by the fact that similar software interfaces are used to configure both the router and the repeater.

Summary

So, we looked at how to set up a TP-LINK repeater as an independent device, as well as use a router manufactured by this brand as a repeater. Both methods of deploying a wireless network infrastructure allow you to increase the Wi-Fi signal coverage area and ensure the connection to it of devices located at a considerable distance from the router or having insufficient sensitivity to the signal level from it.

Setting up the TP Link tl wa850re wireless network coverage amplifier can be done either using WPS technology by pressing a couple of corresponding buttons, or using the extender's web interface for more detailed settings. In addition to a detailed description of these methods, the article describes the main problems that arise during configuration and how to solve them.

Wireless connection

There are several ways to set up the TL WA850re as a repeater. The first option is to use WPS technology, thanks to which the user does not have to make any settings on his own. Your tp link modem must support the WPS protocol. To activate the repeater, follow the instructions below:

The RE indicator stands for Range Extender. It has the following modes:

  • constantly lit (the repeater is successfully connected and duplicates the signal);
  • flashes (connection to the modem is in progress).
  • off (the repeater is not connected to the router).

The Wireless LED should be on. This indicates that the wireless mode is enabled. The tp link wa850re repeater completely repeats the parameters of your local network: name, password and channel used. If you need to fine-tune your settings or your router does not support WPS technology, then you should perform manipulations using the web interface.

Ethernet connection

The web interface allows full configuration of the tp link wa850re. At the time of the first start, the repeater does not yet know the name of your network, so you will not be able to configure the repeater's repeater in wireless mode. To do this, you will need an Ethernet cable, which is already included in the package. Install and configure tp link wa850re according to the following instructions:

If your network is not in the list, click Refresh several times or move the tp link wa850re closer to the router.

Now tp link wa850re is ready to go. It expands your network coverage area. Disconnect your laptop from the extender and try connecting via Wi-Fi.

Device operating modes

TP "Link wa850re" can work as an adapter and repeater. The tp link tl wa850re management process does not involve any user action. The device can operate simultaneously in two modes. The repeater mode is activated immediately after switching on and quick setup through the control panel. This is the main function of the repeater.

If you need a repeater as an adapter, you just need to connect the necessary device (Blu-ray player, media set-top box or laptop) via the RJ-45 interface. Repeater TP Link will automatically provide the device with Internet access. It will also be presented with its own IP address due to the operation of the DHCP server. It is active by default, but if you wish, in the LAN section, you can turn it off or set a static IP address.

Setting up an access point

After successfully connecting the repeater, you can configure some modem parameters via the web interface. We recommend that you look into the "Wireless Network" section. This is where the network name and password are set. In the "Wireless Settings" subsection, the user will be able to change:

  • tp link wa850re operation mode (universal or WDS);
  • region;
  • network name of the main modem;
  • MAC address;
  • amplifier network name;
  • channel width.

  • security level (none or WPA2-PSK or WEP);
  • protection version and encryption type;
  • amplifier network password.

If necessary, you can also set MAC address filtering, but the average user does not need all other settings.

What do the numbers 300 Mbps, 900 Mbps and 1900 Mbps mean?

These numbers indicate the data transfer and receive rates between the router/repeater and the device connected to it. The standard is 300 Mbps (megabits per second). Under ideal conditions without interference and interference, the transmission rate will be the declared number. In reality, the speed is significantly lower due to obstacles, channel overlap and various interference.

The higher the transfer rate, the more expensive the device costs. It should be understood that if your provider provides a connection speed of 100 Mbps, then you will not be able to get a higher data transfer rate using a modem or repeater, even if it has 300 megabits or more in the specification.

tp link tl wa850re wifi signal booster

The extender supports EEE 802.11n standards and also performs 64/128/152-bit WEP, WPA2-PSK and WPA-PSK encryption. The device has compact dimensions, so you can easily connect a Wi-Fi amplifier even in hard-to-reach places. To determine the signal level, there are light indicators on the right semicircle.

The modem's operating range is 2.4 GHz. The tp link wa850re uses the Qualcomm Atheros AR9341 chipset.

Checking Connected Devices

Through the repeater settings, the user can view the list of active devices. To do this, do the following:

The window will show all the devices that are connected to the amplifier.

The article will discuss one interesting device - TP-Link TL WA850RE. Reviews about this device allow you to find out how well it works, what is its performance. What is this technique? We are talking about a repeater, which is also known as a repeater and repeater. It is necessary in order to increase the range of the existing wireless network. Further - in detail about the device.

Equipment

The device is sold in a white-green box. It shows the repeater itself, its characteristics and connection methods.

In the envelope that comes with the kit, there is a disk with all the descriptions and special software, there is also an instruction manual for the TP-Link TL WA850RE and documentation for the device. In general, such a set is unnecessary, since the process of setting up a repeater does not even take a minute. It also includes a gray network cable.

Reasons for use

The repeater is used quite often. A popular reason for buying a repeater is a low-quality router whose signal is not enough for distant rooms or other floors. The TP-Link TL WA850RE repeater, reviews of which are given later in the article, will solve this situation with ease and without any problems. Of course, you can change the settings of the router, try to use a more powerful device, but nothing will give such a result as installing a repeater. The cost of the device is small, but the benefits of it are huge.

The essence of the work

How exactly does a repeater work? With a router installed that sends a signal over a short distance, a repeater is used. It is necessary to activate the device in a place where the network is still stable. The last one should be configured. A second access point will be created, which is a copy of the first one. When moving to a place where the signal is weak, the networks will be automatically reconnected. If desired, you can create a point with a different name and password, which the TP-Link TL WA850RE repeater will distribute. How to set up and how to use - described below.

Appearance

The design of the repeater is quite simple, there are notes of minimalism. All lines are smooth, body is white. The device does not resemble a "brick" of a rectangular shape.

The device is made of glossy plastic. The TP-Link TL WA850RE repeater, reviews of which are quite good, is small, has a compact size.

On the front surface, you can see a button around which a ring of various inductors is installed. They are responsible for powering, connecting via a network cable, enabling repeater mode and working with an access point. An indicator is also installed that displays signal reception from the router. It is best to place the repeater where at least three lights are lit. Then the connection will be excellent and stable.

There is an electric plug, which many consumers note in the reviews.

In general, the design is not bad and most owners like it. Reviews testify to this. The TP-Link TL WA850RE wireless repeater will easily fit into any interior.

Filling

The repeater is powered by an Atheros controller. It is he who gives the right to function in networks such as b / g / n. Available to use 32 MB of memory. The maximum network speed is 100 Mbps.

It is impossible to work with external antennas, since there are none, but two pieces are installed inside.

Setting up the TP-LINK TL-WA850RE repeater

How to configure TP-Link TL WA850RE? Carrying out the process of optimizing the repeater, it is necessary to choose its location correctly. The device must be installed where the Internet speed will be stable without loss or distortion. You also need to consider its localization in such a way that the received signal can cover all the necessary places in the house or apartment.

Setting up the repeater is carried out quickly, in just a couple of minutes. It is enough to plug it into a power outlet, find the WPS button on the router and press it. After that, a large key should be found on the repeater, on which there is a picture of the lock. How to understand that the device is working? The special RE code indicator will light up. The repeater will connect to the router in a second and start working.

In order to understand the signal level supplied by the router, you can pay attention to the built-in indicators. If there are at least three divisions, then the network is of high quality. For the most stable and convenient operation, it is necessary that the router shows at least two “sticks”.

When working with a repeater, the consumer does not even notice the device. The only noticeable indicator is a stronger Internet signal, which in certain places did not even appear before.

When you turn off the device from the power supply and carry it, you do not have to reconfigure the device. All this is confirmed by reviews. The TP-Link TL WA850RE signal amplifier remembers all the networks to which the owner connected it.

At the bottom, consumers may notice a special port required for networking. It is suitable for interacting with a computer or TV that does not have the ability to connect to a wireless network.

Connecting devices

Connecting to a repeater is pretty easy. It is enough just to click on the appropriate button, and everything will begin to function.

But there are other ways to connect (without the WPS key). Each device has its own control panel. It is she who will be needed to obtain a stable connection if the specified button is not on the router.

To open the control menu of this repeater, you will need to connect to it. This can be done both by cable and wirelessly. Immediately after this, an access point (factory) will appear, without a password. Even if the repeater has already been used (settings are saved), you will still be able to enter the panel only when connected.

Next, in the browser, you need to register the address tplinkrepeater.net. To log into your account, you should refer to the instructions or see the data on the official website. As a rule, they are standard and the same: admin.

Entering the repeater settings

After entering the control menu, you need to pay attention to the main page. It will show all the data about the repeater and its status. If the repeater is configured, the owner will see the relevant information.

If the router does not have a WPS key, then settings should be made through this menu. You need to find the item "Master of Instant Options". It is there that access to the quick setup of TP-Link TL WA850RE is located. You need to go to the appropriate tab and click "Next". You should also select a region. The repeater will quickly find all the networks that are nearby and you need to find your own among them. Then - click "Next".

Connecting the TP-LINK repeater to a Wi-Fi network

After searching for your network, you need to specify the password for it. It is allowed to make a clone of this point, you can also rename it. Then you need to click on the “Next” button.

You should review all available settings, if they are correct, you must click "Finish". After that, the repeater will reboot. Then it will turn on already connected to the network.

Resetting the repeater

Sometimes it becomes necessary to reset the device settings. The reason can be many problems with TP-Link TL WA850RE. This is done in two different ways. The first is the easiest - just press the desired button on the repeater. It is enough to turn it on, take a knitting needle or some other sharp object at hand and click on the RESET key. After that, the owner will see that the indicators light up. The repeater will reboot and the reset process will be completed.

Through the control panel, this manipulation is also easy. It is enough to enter the menu "System Tools", "Factory Settings". There will be a Restore button. There will be a reboot.

If the internet is not working

Sometimes reviews of the TP-Link TL WA850RE describe a problem that there are problems with the signal. Often the repeater does not see the network, it happens that the connection occurs, but there is no access to the Internet. This problem is quite easy to solve in several ways.

You need to install a repeater closer to the router. As a rule, the problem is in the wrong location if a weak signal occurs. If the problem is that or the network itself, then you need to reset the settings. How exactly this is done is described above. Next, you should restart the device again and try to connect to the router.

If there are problems when making settings via WPS (for example, the router does not see TP-Link TL WA850RE), then you should use the control panel. This process is also described above. You can also update the firmware as an experiment. Sometimes this solves the problem.

Another way is to change the channel of the wireless network.

Repeater Availability

This repeater can be purchased for a small amount - 1150 rubles. The cost is justified for such a device. This explains the popularity of the described repeater.

Testing

In the article we will also consider the operation of the device in practice. It is possible that additional shortcomings will be identified that are not mentioned in the reviews. TP-Link TL WA850RE performs well in testing. But more on that later. The feed network, its stability and speed are also described below. All data obtained when working with a router from Zyxel. Its maximum speed is 150 Mbps. The repeater and the device are compatible. A computer and a laptop work with the network.

To obtain more accurate data, it is necessary to change the operating conditions of the repeater. The three most relevant have been selected.

  • Operation in the same room.
  • Work with a distance of 20 meters from the router, there is an obstacle in the form of one brick wall. The signal is lost by about half.
  • Outdoor use. The parent point is set at a distance of 30 meters, there are two brick walls between it and the repeater. The signal is lost almost 100%.

Being in the same room, the repeater and router work at the same level, giving out an excellent signal without failures and interference. At a small distance from each other, they can interact with additional equipment (TV) that is connected via the LAN port. The video works perfectly even in streaming mode and from a flash drive. When operating with a loss of 50% of the signal, the picture freezes. The problem can be eliminated only by connecting a SmartTV to the Internet. Then there will be no interference.

The last, third point is of interest. How did the repeater cope in such a situation? We get stable and fast Internet, even if it was previously lost on a laptop. If during direct work with the router the data transfer rate was no more than 10 Mbps, then with a repeater this figure increases to 35.

It should be noted that in all cases the level of access to the network does not change. The difference is only in quality and its loss. It changes in three situations upwards. The repeater did an excellent job with all the conditions.

Unfortunately, due to the fact that it is not possible to function in conjunction with external antennas, the repeater does not provide ample space in which to work with it. Ideally, it covers only one room. If an obstacle appears in the form of a brick wall, then the signal is reduced to a level of 80 dB, two - 50 dB. If there is a need to work with wireless access points, then this nuance must be taken into account.

Summing up the results of testing, it should be noted that in all the cases presented, the quality of the signal and communication in general has clearly improved. That is why we can say with confidence that the repeater copes with its duties with a bang.
