How to put pagination in a Word correctly. How to arrange page numbers in Word

It's time to tell how to number pages in a Word document, because without this nuance, you don't need a table of contents.

Page numbering in word 2003, 2007, and 2010 documents can be useful in any situation. If you are submitting any report, abstract or term paper, then you certainly had to make a table of contents for the document. But so that a person can easily find the page he needs, the entire document must be numbered.

Putting page numbers in word 2007 and other versions is very easy. Go to the Insert tab. Around the middle of the screen, you will find an area called Headers and Footers. And already in it there is a button Page numbers.

By clicking on it, we can number our entire Word document from beginning to end.

But what if we don't need to place page numbers on the entire document and don't need to start from the first. What then? It's simple. This is provided for pagination in word. You just need to select the Page Number Format tab, and already there set the values according to the requirements in your document.

When your document is fully numbered, everything is fine. But what if you suddenly want to remove the numbering?

Read about this in the following articles, and leave questions in the comments.

The Word text editor is one of the more popular typing programs. It is difficult to find a Windows computer that does not have this program installed. The popularity of this program is confirmed by the number of questions about it that users ask on this and other sites on the Internet.

In this article, we'll take a look at one of the most requested features in a Microsoft program. Here you can find out how to put page numbers in the Word.

How to put page numbers in Word 2007, 2010 or 2013

In 2007, Microsoft Word switched to the so-called ribbon interface. The main feature of this interface is that all the functions of the program are distributed in different tabs. In order to activate this or that function, the user needs to go to the desired tab and find there the button that is responsible for the function that the user needs.

For example, in order to put page numbers you need to go to the "Insert" tab and click on the "Page number" button.

After clicking on the "Page number" button, a drop-down menu will appear, in which you can choose how to place the page number: at the top of the page, at the bottom of the page or in the margins.

Here you can also. To do this, click on the "Page number" button and select the "Delete page numbers" item.

How to put page numbers in Word 2003

If you use the Word 2003 edition, then in order to put the page numbers you need to open the "Insert" menu and select the "Page numbers" item.

This will open a small window called “Page Numbers”. Here you can choose where you want to place the page number (top of the page, bottom of the page, right, left or middle).

After choosing a suitable place, click on the "OK" button and the numbering will appear on the pages of your document. If you want to start numbering from a different number or change the format of the number on the page, then you need to click on the "Format" button in the "Page numbers" window.

After that, a small window will appear called "Page Number Format". Here you can change the format of the number, turn on the numbering of chapters, and also select the number with which the numbering should begin.

In order to remove pagination in Word 2003, open the "View" menu and select the "Headers and Footers" item. After that, you need to manually erase the page number on any of the pages of the document and close the "Headers and Footers" editing mode.

There are a lot of documents in which page numbering is necessary. This is a coursework, a diploma, or just a contract. And I sincerely hope that you will not manually number the pages by placing the number at the bottom of the page as my friend did. In any case, after reading this article, you will probably know how to make pagination in Word 2013 and open office. And you will also have a little secret of how pagination is done in a Word from page 3 (it was a joke about a secret).

How to put pagination in a Word from the first cover page

So, the most common way of numbering in your documents is likely to be straight through numbering, which starts from the first page. If you're just starting to print a document, create a pagination template right away so you don't have to think about it later.

For simple page numbering, go to the INSERT tab at the top of your document. In this section, find the section called "Headers and Footers."

Finding it is not at all difficult. In Word 2013 it looks like the image below. This block in the section is responsible for setting up headers and footers. The document has a header and a footer, and each can be customized in its own way.

In our case, we need to add numbering to one of the headers and footers. Click on the "Page number" link and choose where on the page you want to place the numbering. Most often, numbers are placed at the bottom of the page.

Pagination in Word 2013

The placement at the bottom of the page looks like this (like the image below). For simple numbering, you can choose 3 types of number placement. Left, center and right of the page.

I selected the footer to place the page number and chose the left side of the footer as the location. It all looks like this.

In the headers and footers section, you can configure how the numbering will be displayed (format of page numbers…). Click on the menu item corresponding to the name.

A window with format settings will open. Here, as promised, I will tell you the very secret of secrets :). In order:

  • Number format - select the type of display of page numbers: numeric, numeric with hyphens, alphabetic, alphabetic in capital and display in Roman numerals.
  • Include Chapter Number - allows you to add the page number of the current chapter to the page numbering.
  • Page numbering - in this block you can set the number from which the page numbering will begin. Choose for example number 3 to make numbering from page 3.

To add a page for the current chapter, you need to specify the format in which the chapter is displayed in your document. If the chapter display is set as "Heading 1", specify "Heading 1" in the settings accordingly, and Word will automatically determine from which page the new chapter of your document starts. You can set the format for displaying chapters on the main tab as shown in the image below.

If your document contains a title page (such as an abstract or diploma), you will most likely need to remove the numbering from this first title page. This can be done, for example, by turning on page numbering starting from the second, and printing the title page in a new document separately without numbering. But the developers of Word took care of the users and implemented a function to disable numbering for the first cover page. To enable this option, you need to switch to the mode of working with headers and footers. To do this, double-click the left mouse button on the header or footer area.

After double clicking a new tab "Working with headers and footers" will appear. In this tab, find the option called "Custom First Page Header" and check it. This will turn off the display of numbering for the first page and you will not need to create a new file separately for the cover page.

To remove pagination in an existing document, go to the INSERT tab and in the Headers and Footers section, click on the Page Number menu item. In the drop-down list, select the "Delete page number" item. It's that simple and not difficult.

With a seemingly similar approach to document editing, in the Open Office the page numbering differs significantly. To begin with, you must add a header to which you will add fields (as service elements are called in the open office). Each footer must be included (or added) separately.

In an open document, click on the "Insert" menu and select the required header and footer from the drop-down list. For page numbering at the top of the document, I chose the header. In the right menu, click on the words "Normal". After clicking, you will see the corresponding header and footer in your document, with which you can now work.

The header looks like the image below. Place the cursor in the area of the header to edit. Here you will need to place the code for numbering.

Click the "Insert" menu item and select "Fields" from the list. In the right menu, find and paste the "Page number" field.

Add a numbering field

A number with the page number will appear in the footer at the cursor position. Gray color means that this is a special field, not a regular symbol. You can add any text to this number that will be repeated on all pages. I have added the text "- This is the page number" on the image.

You can also format all text in the header and footer just like regular text (change the font, size and alignment on the page - left, right or center).

To change the format of the field for displaying the page number, you must double-click the gray page number with the left mouse button. This will open a window with field display settings. For the page number field, you can change the format display (Arabic, Roman, or Alphabetical) and specify an offset. Offset allows you to specify from which number you want to start numbering. With an offset of 2, the first page will be numbered 3, etc.

Deleting numbering in the open office

To remove numbering in Open Office, you just need to disable the corresponding header and footer. To do this, in the "Insert" menu, select the appropriate header and footer and click on "Normal" with a mark.

Disabling a header and footer removes all information that is specified in it. Confirm the deletion and the numbering will be deleted. If, in addition to numbering, you have any other important information that you plan to use, you can simply delete the gray page number in the header and footer. This will disable numbering, but leave the header and footer itself with different information.

This article contains explanations made for Microsoft Word 2010, but it also applies to other popular versions of Microsoft Word 2007 and 2013.

How to insert page number in Word document?

Pagination in Microsoft Word is very easy to turn on. It is enough to go to the "Insert" tab and then in the "Headers and Footers" subsection click on the "Page number" button. In the list that opens, hover over the appropriate item: "At the top of the page", "At the bottom of the page", "On the page margins" (placement in the page margins is practically not used: as a rule, the page number is placed either at the top or at the bottom).

Among the displayed templates, you need to select the appropriate one by clicking on it.

How do I customize pagination?

Make numbering not from the first page

Very often, in accordance with the rules of paperwork, the numbering is not put down from the first page. Moreover, in the overwhelming majority of cases, this is expressed in the absence of a page number on the title page. To implement this option, you need to enter the header and footer, and in the "Design" tab that appears in the menu, check the "Special header and footer for the first page" checkbox.

Adapt for duplex printing

To set up a different display on even and odd pages (as a rule, this is required for duplex printing), you need to enter the header and in the "Design" tab that appears in the menu, check the "Different headers and footers for even and odd pages" checkbox. After that, you will need to configure the number for even pages by entering the even page title bar - see the description of how to do this above.

Supplement with information on the total number of pages

To make the page numbering in the "Page ... from ..." format, when choosing the numbering format, scroll the list of options to the subsection "Page X from Y" (the very bottom of the list) and select one of the three alignment options.

How to remove page number in Word document?

This feature is rarely used, but it is worth mentioning it as well. To remove the numbering in the "Headers and Footers" subsection, press the "Page number" button, then select the "Remove page numbers" item in the list that opens.

Step-by-step instructions, using which you can easily customize the pagination of a Word document. This information applies to all versions of the editor: 2003, 2007, and 2010.

Using numbering makes it easier to find the information you need. This is achieved due to the fact that you can make notes, or remember the page number on which the required data is indicated. The combined use of the table of contents and numbering allows you to navigate in a large document, and easily jump to its main blocks (chapters, sections, etc.).

: - step-by-step instruction.

Set up pagination

If the standard numbering is enough for you, then when you hover over the fields "Top of the page", "Bottom of the page", etc. a drop-down menu will be presented in which you should select the location of the number. As soon as you click on one of the options, your pages receive serial numbers.

This is the most basic way. Now let's complicate the task a little.

Numbering from a specific page number

It is not always necessary to do so that the first page in the document is marked with the number "1". This situation can arise if you create a part within a large book. Or title pages, table of contents and other information will be attached to the document after its creation. In any case, you need to understand how to start page numbering from the right number.

Go back to the "Insert" ribbon, then "Headers and Footers" and click the "Page Number" button. Now we press the button " Page number format".

In the block " Pagination", you need to select the" Start with "item and specify the desired number accordingly. If the numbers have already been set, they change their value in accordance with this setting. If not, repeat the steps from the previous section.

Please note that here you can also set the desired number format, add the number of the current chapter.

Headers and footers in Word

If you have already followed the steps described above, you probably noticed that numbers are inserted in blocks located at the top and bottom of the page. These blocks are called headers and footers in Word, and are used in all versions of the editor (2003, 2007 and 2010).

As you probably already guessed, we will use headers and footers to enter page numbers. This is far from their only function, but now we are interested in it. Separately, it should be noted that using headers and footers, we can set the desired number for any individual page or group of pages.

So go to the desired page, and double-click the left mouse button on the footer or header (top or bottom area). An editing window will open.

Now enter the required value from the keyboard. When done, press the Enter button to complete the operation.

As we have already noted, almost any information can be placed in headers and footers, including hyperlinks and footnotes.

Note. is created in a couple of seconds. are not much more difficult. Both instructions have already been posted for you.

Practice, you will definitely succeed.

Why look for information on other sites if everything is collected from us?

Microsoft Word or simply Word is one of the most popular programs among users. Thanks to its many functions and simple interface, Microsoft Word has become almost the standard among. Therefore, it is rare where you can meet a computer with the Windows operating system, but without the Word program.

One of the typical tasks that users face while working with this program is pagination. Many users simply cannot find this feature. In this article we will talk about how to enable and configure pagination in Word.

How to enable pagination in Word 2007, 2010, or 2013

Since 2007, Word has been using a so-called ribbon interface. In this interface, all the functions of the program are divided into several tabs. The Page Numbering feature is located on the Insert tab.

By clicking on the "Page Numbering" button, you will see a drop-down menu in which you can choose the location of the numbers. For example, page numbering can be positioned at the top of the page, at the bottom of the page, or in the margins. In order to add pagination in the Word, select one of the proposed layout options.

If you want the page numbering to start not with one, but with a different digit, then this can be specified in the "Page Number Format" menu.

Open the Page Number drop-down menu and select Page Number Format. In the window that opens, you need to enable the "Start" function and specify the number with which the page numbering in the Word should begin.

Page numbering in Word 2007, 2010, or 2013 without a title page

Another possible problem with page numbering is numbering without a title page. Users just don't know how to turn off pagination on the first page of a document.

To set up pagination without a title page (first page), you must first number all the pages as described above. After the number appears on all pages of your document, you just need to turn off the display of numbering on the first page.

To do this, go to the "Page Layout" tab and click on the small button to the right of the "Page Setup" label.

After that, you should see a window called "Page Settings". Here you need to check the box next to the "Mark up first page headers and footers" function. As a result, pagination will disappear from the first page of your document.

In the article "" you can learn how to make the first page without the number, and the second with the number "1".

Word 2007 is an excellent tool included in the office suite of Microsoft and is designed for processing textual information. This editor is successfully used to design reports and abstracts, term papers and theses.

Significantly improves navigation through a multi-page document by creating a table of contents indicating the page numbers from which new chapters and sections begin. Numbering in Word 2007 is possible from any page, while the format of numbers can also be changed. There are several ways to make pagination in Word 2007.

Fast navigation through the article

Simple numbering

If it is necessary to number all the pages of the document, starting from number 1, the procedure will be as follows:

  • Open the required document;
  • Select the "Insert" command from the menu;
  • In the "Headers and Footers" group, click on the arrow next to the "Page number" item;
  • In the menu that opens, select the location and type of the room;
  • To change the format of the number, execute the command: "Insert" -> "Page number" -> "Format of page numbers" -> select the desired view;

Numbering without first page

The design of many text documents implies the presence of a title page, the number on which is not affixed (the second page should receive number 2). For this type of numbering, you need:

  • Number the entire document as with simple numbering;
  • Double click on the first page in the header and footer area (next to the assigned number);
  • In the "Parameters" group of the designer for working with headers and footers, check the box "Special header and footer for the first page";
  • Return to the document field by clicking on "Close the header and footer window", or by double-clicking on the document field.

In order for the number on the second page to start with "1" and not with "2", you need to go to: "Insert" -> "Page number" -> "Format page numbers" -> and in the "Page numbering" field select "Start from 0 ".

Numbering from any page of the document

Complex documents often require specific numbering of different parts. To do this, Word 2007 uses section breaks (that is, there must be a new section on the page where the new numbering should start). In order to take advantage of this opportunity, you should:

  • Go to the page after which the new section should begin;
  • Select "Page Layout" -> "Breaks" in the menu and in the "Section Breaks" group click on the "Next Page" item;
  • Enter the header and footer area of the required section (by double clicking at the top or bottom of the page) and execute the command: "Insert" -> "Page number" -> select the desired type of numbering;
  • If you want this numbering to stop on some page, you need to create a new section from this page and delete the number that has become unnecessary in the header area.

In the process of writing an essay, diploma or book, we all use a text editor for Microsoft Word documents. The correct layout should usually include the page numbering in the document. Many people have difficulties and do not know how to number pages in Word, although it is quite simple to do this.

This article describes in detail how to number pages in the Word, choose the location of the numbering, format, and also exclude the numbering of any page in the document.

Pagination in Word 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016

In all versions older than Word 2003, the numbering is the same. The screenshots below are based on the example of Word 2017, but they will work for older versions as well.

To add numbering in an open document, go to the "Insert" tab. In the "Headers and Footers" section, click the "Page Number" item and select the position of the numbering. In the screenshot below, I have selected a footer location with center placement.

After this action, a numbering appears at the end of each page, as well as a display of the header and footer. To close the display of headers and footers, press the button "Close window of headers and footers".

If desired, you can change the numbering format, for example, making the numbers not Arabic, but Roman. To do this, go to the "Insert" tab again and in the "Page numbers" section open the "Page numbers format".

Here you can choose the appearance, as well as with which digit the numbering will start. You will learn why this may be required in the next paragraph.

Removing the numbering from the title page

In most educational institutions, one of the requirements for document design is the absence of numbering on the title (first) page. If you just turn on page numbering, as shown above, then the numbering will be on the first sheet. To start numbering from the first page, but not display it on the title page, you need to do the following.

Go to the "Layout" tab and click on the "Page settings" link, as shown in the picture below.

Go to the "Paper Sources" tab and check the "Distinguish first page headers and footers" checkbox. Then click OK.

Now the numbering is carried out as before, but its number is not displayed on the first page, in our case number 1.

When you want the numbering not to be displayed on the first page (title page), and on the second, so that it starts with the number 1, you need to set the numbering from 0 in the menu "Insert" - "Page number" - "Format page number". Thus the first page will be numbered 0 with no display, and the second page will start at 1, the third page will be numbered 2, and so on.

Numbering from the third page

Let's complicate the task a little. We need the numbering to be, but not displayed on the first and second pages. After all, the first page is usually a title page, the second can be a table of contents, where numbering is also not required.

For numbering from the third page, you need to do an operation called "Page Break". First, reset all numbering settings to their defaults if you have hidden the numbering display on the cover page. Suppose that at the moment you have numbering turned on from the first page and the number 1 is displayed on the title page, the number 2 on the second page, and so on.

For convenience, enable the display of all characters in Word. To do this, on the "Home" tab, click on the "Show all signs" button.

Now that you have displayed all the characters in the documents, including spaces and empty lines, left-click on the last character on the first page of the document. Then on the Layout tab, click Breaks - Next Page.

Do the same for the second page of the document. If you did everything correctly, then the included function of displaying all symbols will show you at the end of the first and second pages of the line of breaks. In the picture below, they are shown with red arrows.

Now the third page is numbered with number 1. If you want it to be numbered with number 3, then in the menu "Insert" - "Page number" - "Format page number" set the value "Start with 3".

There is only one problem left, on the first two pages we have page numbers displayed. To remove them, select the first page, go to the "Layout" - "Page settings" tab. Next, in the "Paper Source" tab, put the checkboxes next to the "Distinguish first page headers and footers" item.

Do the same on the next page of your document.

Thus, we were able to make sure that the numbering was not displayed on the first two pages and began from the third, and with the number that we want.

By the way, this method with a gap allows you to start numbering not only from the third page, but absolutely from any page.

To delete the numbering, double-click on any page number and press the DEL key. All numbers will be removed from the document.

Pagination in Word 2003

There are still quite a few people who use outdated Word 2003. In it, pagination is done in a slightly different order than for newer versions of the program.

In an open Word 2003 file, click on the top menu "Insert" - "Page numbers".

Set the position of the numbers (for example, at the bottom of the page) and alignment (for example, to the right). By removing the check mark from the "Number on the first page" item, you can turn off the numbering on the title page of the document.

Click on the "Format" button. Specify the numbering format (for example, Roman numerals), and also specify which digit to start page numbering with.

After making changes, click OK and all pages will be numbered.

For numbering from the third or any other page in Word 2003, first turn on the display of all characters. After that, move the cursor over the last character on the first page and click in the horizontal menu "Insert" - "Page break". Do the same for the second. From now on, the numbering will start from the third page.

The numbering of pages in a Word for a regular document is very simple, but when it becomes necessary to put page numbers in your own headers and footers or to make double page numbering, then some people start to feel sad.

In fact, there is nothing complicated. I suggest doing a little practical work, after which it will become more fun and easier for you to work.

Simple pagination

First, a few words about how to number pages in a Word for those who come across this for the first time:

In the top menu ribbon, go Insert -> Page Number -> Top of Page -> Simple Number 1

Of course, you can choose absolutely any arrangement and style of page numbering, my choice is due to the compactness of the picture. That's all, let's go further to get acquainted with more interesting things.

Page numbers in headers and footers

The fact is that page numbers in word are inserted into headers and footers, and if you have your own, the previous method will not work, because in the document will be all sikos-nakos.

Healthy. If you float in terms of headers and footers and sections in word, then I strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the articles: "Headers and footers in a Word" (see) and "Sections in a Word" (see).

How to number pages in a Word

So, let's start and do everything in order:

1. Download the prepared file for practical work.

2. Go to the editing mode of the header of the first page of the content (find it difficult, see).

3. Place the cursor in the rectangle in the upper right corner and press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + F9, after which there will be { } .

4. In these brackets write or copy the code PAGE .

5. Press the keyboard shortcut Alt + F9, this will display the value of the code.

6. Exit the header / footer editing mode (find it difficult, see).

7. Since, in our example, there is a special header for the first page, it is necessary to do this for the subsequent pages of the content. Go to the second page and do it.

8. The numbering was set, but as a rule it does not start from the first page. Switch to edit mode of the first page header and select the page number by going to the ribbon of the top menu Insert -> Page Number -> Format Page Numbers ... and indicate that pagination starts at 4.

Thus, end-to-end numbering is affixed for the subsequent sections of the explanatory note and annexes. For simplicity, you can copy the page number of the table of contents, in the header-footer edit mode, and paste into subsequent sections.

Double pagination in a Word

So, we figured out the sequential numbering of pages in the Word, but after all, it is necessary to put the sheet numbers of each section separately for the content, notes and appendices.

Let's proceed step by step, from simple to complex:

9. Switch to the edit mode of the footer of the second page of contents and position the cursor in the lower right corner in the appropriate place.

10. Paste the code into this cell (= (page) -3) similarly, creating curly braces with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + F9... Page number 2 was obtained by decreasing the value of the current page by 3, which can be seen from the code.

You can check the result by adding a content page.

Word pagination for the pros

The previous method can be used to number the subsequent inner pages of sections, but the problem is that you constantly have to monitor the last page number of the previous section. Damn, I probably would have rested here, my head starts to warm up.

Let's do this, if in this example you have the second page of the explanatory note section 7, then you will have to get the internal numbering of the second page like this (= (page) -5), if the number of pages of content increases by one, then the number of the second page of the note will be 8, and the internal one will have to be written as (= (page) -6) .

You can also automate this, we do it sequentially, and everything will become clear along the way:

11. Turn on the visibility of hidden symbols by pressing the corresponding button on the main tab of the top menu, and select the entire line

:::::::: Section break (from next page) :::::::::

This inscription must necessarily be on a separate line, otherwise transfer it by placing the cursor at the beginning and press Enter. To select the cursor, move from the beginning to the end of the points, or click in front of the line behind the sheet space.

12. With the selected line in the top menu Insert -> Bookmark in the "Bookmark" window write r1(analogy section 1, in Latin without spaces), put "Hidden bookmarks" and click "Add".

13. We go to editing the header of the second page of the explanatory note and insert the code into the page number cell (= (page) - (pageRef r1) .

It should be interpreted like this: code (page) indicates the page number, in our case 7, and (pageRef r1) page number with cross-reference created on the section break that is on page 5, so the internal page number is calculated as the page number minus the last page number of the previous section, i.e. 7-5 = 2; 8-5 = 3; 9-5 = 4, etc.

14. Do the same for the applications section yourself by adding a bookmark r2 at the section break at the end of the explanatory note.

The final touch to pagination

Go sequentially to the first page of each section, and in the cell under the "Sheets" in the lower right corner put the code (SectionPages)... This code will display the total number of pages in the section. If you need to display the total number of pages in the document, paste the code (NUMPAGES) .

It happens that word slows down and does not always update the fields with codes, to force the update, press the keyboard shortcut twice Alt + F9.

Let me remind you that the parentheses for inserting the code are called by the combination Crtl + F9, and calling values Alt + F9.

Bonus. Well, at the end, if there were difficulties, you can download the document with the finished result by clicking.
