We got acquainted with the hardware of the Apple iPad Pro. We found out that this is the most productive ARM-based tablet, equipped with a great screen and a capacious battery. But we also said that due to its size, the iPad Pro offers different use cases than the iPad Air. In the second part of the article, we will analyze these scenarios in detail using the example of specific applications, as well as study branded accessories for the iPad Pro - the Apple Pencil stylus, case and cover.
Accessories
At the presentation of the iPad Pro, along with the tablet itself, two very interesting accessories were presented: the Apple Pencil stylus and the Smart Keyboard cover. In the US, they went on sale at the same time as the iPad Pro itself, while our Apple Pencil lingered for about a week and a half, and the Smart Keyboard cover still hasn't arrived (and it won't be available until the New Year).
For this reason, we could only get a quick glimpse of the Smart Keyboard. In general, this is a hybrid of a cover and a keyboard, that is, it can be closed so that it completely covers the screen, like a cover, or you can open and install the iPad Pro on it at an angle - to make it look like an open laptop. It is for connecting the keyboard on the tablet that there are contacts on the left side.
There is one more position: in it, the keyboard part is at the back, holding the tablet at an angle, convenient for watching videos.
Thus, the Smart Keyboard completely replaces the usual cover, although with it the tablet still becomes a little thicker. As for the convenience of the keys themselves, in the few minutes while we were holding the Smart Keyboard in our hands, the key travel seemed to us very comfortable, as well as the coating material. However, the keys themselves are still slightly smaller than the standard laptop keys, although the distance between them is quite sufficient, which reduces the likelihood of touching an adjacent key.
We repeat that the Smart Keyboard has not yet gone on sale, however, any Bluetooth keyboard, including the Magic Keyboard, can be used as an external keyboard with the iPad Pro. In addition, there are already similar third-party Smart Keyboard solutions (for example, Logitech).
If you still want a branded accessory, then you can take a regular cover (no keyboard). It costs about 5,000 rubles and protects the device's screen, unlocks it when you open it, and also allows you to conveniently place the tablet on a table at various angles.
The cover is only available in two colors - dark gray and white. The same colors are available for the silicone case. It costs more - almost 6,600 rubles.
The case can be used in conjunction with the cover, as in the photo below. However, one must be prepared for the fact that in this version the device will become significantly more bulky and will no longer be perceived as thin.
However, of all the branded accessories, of course, the Apple Pencil is of the greatest interest. And we will focus on it.
The news that Apple will release a stylus was received ambiguously by the company's fans: everyone remembered how Steve Jobs did not like stylus and how he sarcastically over them at the presentation of the first iPhone. However, unlike the iPhone and previous iPads, the new iPad Pro is positioned as a professional device, including one intended for designers, artists, etc. And here you can't do without a stylus.
The stylus is sold separately for 7790 rubles. Not cheap? Yes indeed. However, of all tablet stylus that we have come across (not taking professional Wacom tablets now), this one is the most convenient. Therefore, it deserves to be considered as a separate product (which, in fact, it is).
The stylus is packed in a white oblong box, inside which, in addition to it, there are information leaflets and a spare cap and tip.
The stylus itself is quite thin (maybe a little thicker than a regular ballpoint pen), its body is made of white glossy plastic, except for the tip of the rod, the rim around the base of the cap and the plug for connecting to the iPad. The plastic is quite pleasant to the touch, it is comfortable to hold the stylus in your hand.
If we open the cap, we will find a Lightning plug under it. This plug is needed to connect the stylus to the iPad Pro. Just plug the stylus into the Lightning connector on the iPad Pro and it starts charging (there's a battery inside the stylus). Moreover, in order to be able to work for several hours, it is enough to hold the stylus connected to the iPad for only half a minute.
In addition to recharging, connecting the stylus to the iPad Pro is necessary in order for them to "make friends." That is, when you pull out the stylus you just bought, you need to insert it into the iPad Pro in order to establish a connection between the two.
On the other end of the stylus, there is a metal rod covered with a plastic tip. And here we come to some very important things. The fact is that the stylus recognizes not only the force of pressing, but also the angle of contact with the tablet. In addition to this, you can hold it not only near the rod, as we usually hold a pen, but also closer to the cap, like a pencil when shading. This is a valuable moment for artists.
Here are some examples. For simplicity and clarity, all of them will be made in "Notes" - a preinstalled application that, starting with iOS 9, has received drawing capabilities.
It's just handwritten text. Yes, the author has a clumsy handwriting. But believe me, it is no better with a regular ballpoint or gel pen :) In fact, writing by hand with Apple Pencil is quite convenient - there is almost no delay between touching the stylus on the screen and the appearance of a line (at least, it is not felt) ... The only not very pleasant feeling is the rather "slippery" glass surface. That is, there is no such characteristic "grip" as in the case of ordinary paper. But, again, this does not cause much discomfort, and, most importantly, even despite this feeling of sliding, you still manage to write in almost the same handwriting as on paper (although at first it is unusual, and sometimes you have to make some effort to make the letters turned out to be readable).
Another example: pencil shading. Instead of a tool imitating a pen, we chose a "pencil", took the stylus higher and made these wide translucent lines with a wide brush gesture. And then, taking the pencil closer to the rod and working in smaller gestures, they drew the usual thin lines on top.
Now we take the "felt-tip pen" and draw a regular line first, and then make a very small angle between the stylus and the screen, thickening the line.
This whole line was drawn without removing the stylus from the screen, it is continuous.
Despite its convenience and clarity in terms of demonstrating new features, "Notes", of course, is not a professional tool. But iPad Pro already has apps that artists, illustrators, and designers can use. We will talk about them in the next part of the article.
Apps for iPad Pro
So, we smoothly moved on to the topic of applications for the iPad Pro. Let us immediately note two points. First of all, all applications that worked fine on other iPads will work correctly on the iPad Pro. That is, the developers of applications do not need to optimize them in any way. During the use of the iPad Pro (several weeks), we could not find a single application that would crash or somehow display incorrectly. However, since the screen area of the iPad Pro is much larger than that of the iPad Air, the question arises of changing the application interface so that the elements do not look too large and auxiliary inks, menus, and so on do not take up much space from the main content. And so far the trouble is with this (this is the second point that should be taken into account). For some reason, even the largest developers have not yet moved and optimized the interface for the iPad Pro. As a result, for example, extremely inconvenient Facebook and Vkontakte clients, terrible YouTube, etc. That is, all this is tolerable, but you get less pleasure from using them. So, when buying an iPad Pro, be prepared for the fact that many familiar applications will not look as good as you would like. The main difference between this application and many other collections of painting reproductions (of which there are many in the App Store) is that all the paintings were presented here in high resolution.
The application looks great on a regular iPad, but there you have to choose: either you see only a fragment of the image (but in all the details), or the whole picture (but without details). On iPad Pro, you can open an image in full screen and see a lot of detail without sacrificing the overall experience.
Artsy
An excellent free app for connoisseurs of contemporary art -. Like the Prado Museum app, Artsy allows you to see your paintings in reasonably good resolution, well beyond the iPad Air. Therefore, it is the iPad Pro that will be the most convenient and enjoyable way to explore the Artsy catalog and immerse yourself in the world of contemporary art.
In general, if you love fine art, or, even more so, work in a field related to it (for example, lecturing about art, doing dealer activities, dealing with galleries, etc.), then iPad Pro will be the most convenient for you. tool. Of course, you need to understand that all of these applications are great for iPad Air. But it is on the iPad Pro that they look optimal and allow you to explore the content presented in them with maximum convenience and pleasure.
To conclude the conversation about applications, we note that the advantages of the iPad Pro are obvious in regular Microsoft Office - especially in Excel, where you can see much more data on one screen, but also in Word. In addition, the dual-window mode, which appeared in iOS 9, is the most reasonable and useful on the iPad Pro (we can assume that few people used it on the previous iPads).
Games
The situation with games is somewhat less straightforward. It seems that this is the area that, at first glance, should also definitely benefit from the enlargement of the screen, but in practice, not everything turns out to be so simple.
Let's start with the most obvious examples. Of course, board games look great on iPad Pro: chess, backgammon, checkers, solitaire. This is especially valuable if you want to play a game with someone else (i.e. use your tablet simply as a convenient replacement for traditional inventory). So, the iPad Air was still too small compared to a regular chessboard to be perceived in such a role. iPad Pro is a different matter.
The second genre, which is also definitely more convenient and more beautiful on the iPad Pro, is Tower Defense. Since the basis of this genre is small turrets, cannons and the like, then with an increase in the size of the display, all this becomes clearer, more expressive, and, in the end, easier to control. Anomaly Defenders is a good example.
Do you have a small child? Do you play games with him on your tablet? Then the iPad Pro is also worth taking a closer look at. For example, there is the excellent project Botanicula, which children love (and many adults do too).
It can be played with your child, and for such a pastime the size of the iPad Pro is optimal, while the iPad Air is too small. Any small objects, like in the mentioned game (there are a lot of spider-bugs, bugs and other not even immediately noticeable elements), are better visible on the iPad Pro, and since they are larger, the eyes get tired less.
In the puzzle genre, the iPad Pro is generally very comfortable to use. But there is not always a noticeable difference with the iPad Air. For example, in Botanicula - there is, in Room Three, where there are a lot of details (all sorts of gears, bolts, levers, etc.) - too, in Monument Valley on iPad Pro you can see the whole structure, which is also great. But in Shadowmatic, does it really matter whether you rotate the object more or less on the screen? Although the iPad Pro has no shortcomings here either.
We have listed several genres of games. Notice what they all have in common? The fact that during the game process the tablet lies on your table or on your lap. You do not need to hold it in your hands in the air, these games do not use an accelerometer and gyroscope. It is much more difficult with those games where these hardware elements are involved, and, therefore, the tablet must be kept on weight. Let's say with races.
Specifically in the case of the iPad Pro, this will be useful, for example, when using professional applications available only on the Mac. For example, you can open full-fledged Adobe Photoshop on iPad Pro through your Mac. But here you should immediately be prepared for several problems. For a start, the picture on the iPad Pro for some reason turns out to be not clear enough, unclear - this is clearly seen in the fragments of two screenshots. The first screenshot is a site opened in Safari on a Mac (and the screenshot was taken there), and the second is the same page, but opened through an iPad Pro remotely connected to a Mac. Apparently, the application does not use the large resolution of the iPad Pro yet (or it does not use it quite as it should). But, according to company representatives, the developers are aware of this and are working to solve the problem.
The second problem with Parallels Access is its lack of stability and smoothness. But this is already a common problem, not only for the iPad Pro. Of course, the iPad Pro solves another important problem: those elements of Mac programs that looked too small on the iPad Air look almost the same here as on the 13-inch MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. But it is perhaps premature to expect that you will launch Adobe Photoshop on Mac and have a full-fledged working tool on your iPad Pro, although no one bothers to experiment in this direction.

And this is its fundamental difference from the usual iPad, which was purchased by most people on the basis of "he has, this is, but I do not have it yet" or "I'll try, what kind of miracle is this." Steve Jobs was right: 10 inches is really the optimal size in terms of this kind of consumer use. And the stylus is also not needed for this. But with the iPad Pro, Apple is taking a step into other territory, trying to attract professionals and people who make informed choices and use the tablet as a tool for solving specific problems (not necessarily professional, but nevertheless well-defined).
It's great that Apple has achieved very smooth and correct operation of iPad applications that are not optimized for the iPad Pro. The fonts work especially well - the text always looks perfect (except for virtualization tools, of course). But Apple has not yet succeeded in encouraging developers to refine the application interface exactly to the size of the iPad Pro screen, and this is important for the further development of this direction, which, undoubtedly, will be.
One can argue for a long time whether Apple's current strategy is wrong or not, recall the numerous violations of Jobs's covenants, etc. But with all the noted shortcomings and features, the iPad Pro as such was a success. One can hardly argue with that. And now it is no longer only from Apple that it depends on whether new formats for using tablets will appear and become widespread, aimed specifically at devices with a large screen. Here a lot will be determined by the steps of competitors (they will probably try to release something similar to the iPad Pro - but how successful and how soon?), Developers, and iPad Pro sales. However, Apple would not have been Apple if it had not taken bold ambiguous steps - and here Jobs' former comrades are very clearly following the line he has outlined: not to enter existing territory, but to create their own sphere, form a new market, new user requests. Will it work or not? We will see. But what I would definitely like to hope for is that the iPad Pro will shake up the swamp that the tablet market has become, and we will see many more new and interesting things.
