The computer cannot see the wired internet. What if the network cable is not plugged in although it is plugged in? Network cable not connected or unrecognized network on the computer

The Internet is replete with news on how to solve the problems of connecting to the global network using wireless technologies. However, even when connecting the wired Internet, a lot of problems can arise that will not allow receiving information from the global network, although they are much less common. If the Internet does not work via cable, the user must clearly know the reasons, as well as ways to solve this problem.

This article discusses the issue of Internet access problems by directly connecting a LAN cable to a computer or laptop, from a router (direct cable connection from the provider is practically the same, only in this case the reasons for inoperability are slightly less).

As a rule, the network cable is connected directly to the computer due to the fact that it is not provided and such components are not connected. Of course, you can purchase a special Wi Fi receiver that can be connected to the Internet to get rid of unnecessary wires placed around your apartment, home or office. But this step is not always advisable, because a computer can in no way be called a portable device that can be moved at any moment. That is why, in order not to waste extra funds, most computer users use a direct LAN connection.

First of all, if you cannot connect to the Internet, you need to check the following factors:

  • is there a working cable that connects the router to the computer (try using it when connecting to another device);
  • check the operability of the Internet channel (connect directly the LAN from the provider to the network adapter);
  • whether the connection to the router is active (whether the LAN light on the router is on);
  • pay attention to the network icon, which is located in the tray (the computer reacts at least somehow when connecting and disconnecting a network cable, and also whether the network is identified);

The above factors are the main reasons for the lack of internet connection. If the LAN cable connecting the router and the computer is inoperative, it is enough to replace it. If no devices, with a direct cable connection from the provider, also do not get access to the Internet, this issue must be checked directly with the provider, who are obliged to check the integrity of the cable along the entire route from the computer. Of course, if the LAN cable connection lamp on the router is off, you need to check the connection and operation of the router itself.

The most subtle problem is the inability to connect to the Internet if a red cross on the network identifier in the computer tray is lit or if the network is being permanently identified, which does not allow connecting to the Internet. Let's consider this issue in more detail.

The computer does not respond in any way to the LAN cable connection

If the red cross on the network icon is constantly lit, the reason is the performance of the network card.

To check the network card, follow these steps:

  1. open "Device Manager"
  2. right click on "My Computer"
  3. "Control"
  4. go to the item "Device Manager").

You will see a list of all devices that are installed on your computer. Open the list "Network adapters", where you will have all the network cards that are installed on this computer (in most cases it is one that is integrated into the motherboard, but there may be more).

If a yellow icon with an exclamation mark is lit opposite it, you need to reinstall the drivers for this device. Visit the manufacturer's official website and download the drivers for your specific network card model and install them (it is better not to use the automatic driver search, but to do the installation manually).

If the Internet is still not available, do the following:

  1. go to "Control Panel"
  2. go to the "Network and Internet" window.
  3. you may have a trite disconnected installed network device. To enable it, right-click on the icon and select "Enable".

A circle is constantly spinning Identification or the network is not recognized
This reason can arise when there is a conflict of IP addresses that are present on the network.

To fix this problem, you must:

  • go to the "Network and Sharing Center";

  • click "Change adapter parameters";
  • on the icon of your network card, right-click and select "Properties";
  • place the cursor on "Internet Protocol IPv4";
  • set a bullet to automatically obtain an IP address and DNS server.

If you have a yellow triangle on the network status, in this case, you have incorrect router settings that do not allow you to connect to the global network.

In such a situation, it is necessary to establish the correct settings of the router (instructions must be posted by the provider on the home page, or they can give them to you in the form of a printout) or take the router to the provider so that they configure the device correctly. Also, a similar sign may appear if you have not paid for the Internet and you are simply disconnected from the network.

You connected the Internet, but at one point you realized that there is no connection, since the network card does not see the cable? This happens quite often, and there are several reasons that an important part of the computer, without which access to the network is impossible, ceases to see the wire from the provider.

If the computer does not see the cable, then the reason lies in the software settings.

Let's take a look at why this happens and how to fix internet access hardware problems.

The most commonplace and simple reason that the adapter in the computer stopped seeing the cable is external damage. Check the connector into which the cord is inserted - if it is loose, the wire does not fit tightly, then this means that the port is damaged. In this case, you need to replace it or purchase a new network adapter - it is not so expensive, this purchase will not take a lot of money from you.

If everything is fine with the port, check the Internet wire - any damage to the contact can make it inoperative. If it is intact on contacts, you will have to examine it along its entire length - at home it is often touched by animals, children or adults if it is poorly hidden. It is worth noting that when installing the cord, you should immediately follow its safe location - it should lie so that neighbors do not touch it.

When you find damage, all that remains is to replace the wire and try to keep it neat in the future. Make a note of where it went bad and why. This way you will know how to stretch it correctly from the driveway to your computer next time.

Settings Failure

The network card does not see the cable in many situations due to interrupted Internet access settings. To check this, go to the computer settings, the "Network and Sharing Center" section. If a red cross is lit on the connection diagram between the PC and the Internet icon, click on it, after which the system will diagnose the network.

Using the prompts, you will understand what the problem was. If the system does not fix them on its own, you will receive information on what needs to be done to do this. If the network settings are lost in the parameters, and they are not entered automatically, enter all the necessary information. They can be obtained by contacting the provider or by viewing the contract that you signed when you connected to the Internet.

Driver Issues and NIC Rollback

If the drivers are damaged or if they are installed incorrectly, the adapter stops seeing the cable. To fix this, do the following:

  • Go to the device manager and select the "Network adapters" section;
  • Click on the name of your network card and in the window that appears, select the Driver tab;
  • Click on "Roll Back" for the system to install the driver that you used earlier.

Did not help? In the same menu, try to update the driver - click on the appropriate button, select automatic search, and the system will find the necessary software for the network equipment. If you do not have drivers on your computer, download and install them yourself. You can find the necessary files by the name of the adapter, which you immediately see when you enter the device manager.

Card is disabled or not working

Sometimes something changes in the system, after which the adapter turns off and therefore does not see the wire of the Internet provider. But you can always turn it on again, this is done like this:

  • Go to the device manager, find the name of the card in the network adapters menu;
  • Click on the equipment name with the right mouse button to open the context menu and select the "Update equipment configuration" function.

If, after all the above steps, the device still does not see the cable or is missing, there is only one conclusion - the problem lies in it, so it is worth replacing the adapter. It is not difficult to do this, any specialist or more or less advanced user can easily and quickly cope with the task.

There are often situations when after connecting a computer or laptop to the Internet using a network cable, an error "Network cable is not connected" appears. This is more likely not even an error, but simply the status of the network adapter, which can be observed in network connections.

It turns out that the computer does not respond in any way to the connection, the network cable is not connected, although it is connected to the computer, inserted into the connector of the network card. Icon on the notification panel with a red cross. And of course the Internet doesn't work. This is how it looks:

And most importantly, the cable is connected. From a router, modem, or directly from the provider's equipment. This error can appear on both a PC and a laptop. It also doesn't matter what Windows is installed on your computer. Only in Windows 10, the inscription "Network cable is not connected" will be next to the "Ethernet" adapter, and in Windows 7 - next to "Local Area Connection". And in Windows XP, a pop-up window with this error still appears if you hover the mouse over the connection icon. It often happens the same.

It's the same with the connection method. Someone has a network cable directly from the provider (for example, Rostelecom), and someone through a modem, Wi-Fi router, or terminal.

What could be the problem?

There can be many reasons. Let's list the main ones:

  • The network cable is incorrectly or not fully connected.
  • The network cable is damaged. The contacts in the connector may have come off (into which the network cable itself is crimped).
  • Hardware problems with the router, modem, provider equipment. Or the network card itself in your laptop or PC has broken.
  • Problems in the settings of the network card. More often than not, it cannot automatically detect speed and duplex. I will tell you about this in more detail.
  • There are some problems with the network card driver.
  • Viruses, firewalls, some programs. Yes, yes, because of them, the error "Network cable is not connected" may also occur.

How to find out the reason and what to do first?

  • First, restart your computer, modem, router (if any).
  • Disconnect the network cable and reconnect. Also check the connection on the router (if the Internet is connected through it)... Connect the cable to another LAN port. Note if the LAN indicator on the router lights up after connecting the cable. You can see the instructions:.
  • If possible, connect using a different cable.
  • You can gently move the network cable where it enters the connector. And look at this moment at the status of the network adapter on the computer. Perhaps contacts are leaving there, and in this way it will be possible to find out.
  • If there is another PC or laptop, then try connecting it. So we can find out what the matter is.
  • If the Internet goes through a router, then try connecting the cable from the provider directly to the computer.

I would divide the solutions into software and hardware.

The network cable is not plugged in although it is plugged in: solutions

1 I would try removing the network card from the device manager. After rebooting, it should recover automatically. Go to Device Manager (the easiest way to find it is through the search, or press the Win + R key combination and execute the devmgmt.msc command).

Open the "network adapters" tab and find the network card. Depending on the manufacturer and driver, the name may be different. The name may contain "LAN". For example, on my laptop this is "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller". By the way, notice if there is a yellow icon next to it. Click on it with the right mouse button and select "Delete device".

We confirm the deletion and restart the computer. Perhaps, after rebooting, everything will work, and the computer will see the connected network cable.

2 Check the settings for determining the speed and duplex. In device manager, right click on the network card (as I showed above) and select "Properties".

Next, go to the "Advanced" tab. Find and select in the list "Spped & Duplex"... And on the left in the drop-down menu, set the value to "Auto Negotiation". But if this option was originally installed there, then try to put a different value. For example: "100 Mbps Full Duplex". You can try different options. Remember to click Ok and restart your computer.

It just often happens that the network card cannot automatically detect the speed and duplex.

3 Network card driver. You need to try reinstalling it. Download the driver from the manufacturer's website of the card (LAN) itself, laptop, or your computer's motherboard and start the installation. You can see an article on this topic:.

Other reasons why the computer does not respond when the network cable is connected

1 Breakdown of the network card. However, in this case, you most likely will not see it in the device manager. But it happens in different ways. To find out, you need to connect another cable to it. Connect to another router or ISP. Or connect other devices to the same cable. 2 Problems with the provider. For example: an employee of the provider connected the Internet to another subscriber, and accidentally disconnected your cable from the equipment, or the cable was interrupted somewhere in the entrance. Or maybe someone cut it off on purpose. In such cases, the message "Network cable is not connected" will be displayed. You need to contact the provider's support. Just before that, it would be good to make sure that the problem is not in the network card of your computer. It is also not uncommon for contacts to disappear on the connector, into which the network cable from the provider is crimped. You just need to redo and correctly. Or call the masters. 3 Problem with the router. May be. But it is very easy to check all this. Disconnect the internet from the router (only if you do not have ADSL), and connect it directly to your computer. If the computer sees a network cable, then the problem is either in the router or in the cable with which you connect the PC to the router. You can also take a look at the article:. 4 Defective network cable. And this can be. But, if we have a cable in which we connect the computer to the router, then this is easy to check by connecting another device to them, or by connecting the cable from the provider directly to the computer's network card.

1. Reboot the router and check if the cables are connected correctly

When using a cable for connection, check which ports are connected to the network connectors. The internet cable provided by your ISP must be plugged into a separate slot. Usually it is located at some distance from other ports or is indicated by a different color (often blue).

Then reboot the router. This step should be performed regardless of whether you are connecting to the router - using a wire or wirelessly (WiFi). To reboot the device, use the “Power” or “On / Off” button on the device itself. Press the button to turn off the router, and after 10-15 seconds, press the button again to turn it on. If there is no separate reset button on the rear panel, unplug the device from the mains by unplugging the power supply. After 30-40 seconds, turn on the device again, and after it boots up, check if the computer can see the router.

2. Run connection diagnostics

Start Windows Control Panel on the computer that is having difficulty connecting. In the Network Control Center, select the menu item marked in the screenshot.

Find the required network adapter, right-click on it and run diagnostics. Windows will try to identify the problem with the connection. If the problem is successfully detected and corrected, the system will inform you that the problem has been fixed. Then reconnect and the computer will see the router.

Important! Network diagnostics can take several minutes. It is recommended that you do not interrupt the troubleshooting process.

3. Use a different connection type

If the previous steps did not help, try connecting to your home network in a different way. If using a cable connection, connect via WiFi and vice versa. This method allows you to localize the error and for its further correction. Among the shortcomings, it can be noted that desktop PCs are rarely equipped with a WiFi adapter, so often this method can only be used on a laptop. For diagnostics, you can use a second computer. This will help determine where the error occurs - on a computer or a router.

4. If using WiFi, check the openness of the network name

The computer may not find home WiFi if the network is configured as hidden. These networks do not broadcast their SSIDs to surrounding wireless devices. You can connect to a hidden network after entering its name and authorization (if encryption is available). You can check the current WiFi settings in the web interface of the router. Connect to the router with a cable and make sure that the connection is established (the computer can see it). Turn the router over and on its underside look at the address for entering the admin panel, as well as the username and password. Go to the specified address in your browser, enter your account information and find the wireless settings.

Among the settings there will be a checkbox responsible for the visibility of the name of the wireless network. In routers of different manufacturers, it is called differently, for example, "Make network hidden", "Hide SSID", "Hide network name". On TP-Link routers, the desired item is called "Enable SSID Broadcast", and you can find it in the "Wireless Mode -> Wireless Settings" menu. Change this setting, restart your router, and try to reconnect.

5. Make sure the Ethernet port on the computer is working

Connect the internet cable directly to your computer, without using a router. If Internet access appears, then the computer does not see the router due to problems with the router itself. Otherwise, if Internet access does not appear, the error may occur due to problems with the computer's network card. It is recommended to reinstall the network card driver or replace it.

6. Replace the network cable

Failure of a network cable is one of the common reasons why a computer does not see a router. Cable breakage is usually associated with physical damage that is not always easy to spot. The cord can be damaged by children or pets, it can be crushed by a door or pinched by a baseboard. Try using a different Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the router.

7. Insert the network cable into another port of the router

The failure of one of the LAN ports of the device may be the cause of the problem. Modern routers are equipped with multiple Ethernet ports, usually four. Disconnect the network cable that connects the router to the computer from the used input and connect to the adjacent one. If the computer still does not see the router, try plugging the cable into a different port. If the connection is successful, the corresponding LAN indicator on the router will light up.

Configuring a network connection following all instructions is not a guarantee of uninterrupted Internet access. The reasons why the network stops working are varied and not always obvious. Let's talk about what can cause an Ethernet connection failure and how to fix it.

Why Windows 8 does not work with a network connection via a cable

Hardware reasons:

  • damaged or poorly crimped network cable;
  • the length of the cable segment between the network nodes is exceeded (more than 100 meters);
  • network devices are not correctly wired;
  • the network gateway (the device through which the computer connects to the Internet) does not work or is incorrectly configured;
  • the cable is not connected to the network card of the computer;
  • the network card is faulty or not installed (driver is missing);
  • there is a source of electromagnetic interference near a cable, computer or other network device (router, switch).

Reasons related to settings:

  • Windows network services are not running;
  • Changed the Winsock configuration (Winsock are Windows structures that control application access to network services);
  • connection parameters are incorrect;
  • the network adapter turns off to save energy;
  • communication is blocked by incorrect settings of security software (firewall or Windows firewall);
  • connection to the network (or only to the Internet) is limited by the administrator;
  • Windows is infected with malware that blocks Internet access.

If the connection is limited for individual applications, for example, only for the browser:

  • the application connects to the Internet through a proxy server that is inaccessible;
  • the application is blocked by the Windows firewall, firewall, or computer administrator;
  • Malicious scripts are running in the context of the application.

Fixing equipment problems

If the connection is completely absent, periodically disappears or loses data, start the test with a network cable. Make sure the insulation is intact and not kinked. Check the fastening of the connectors.

If you are setting up the connection for the first time, make sure that the cable is properly crimped (the conductors are connected to the correct pins of the connector). Below are the crimp diagrams:

  1. to connect a computer-device (switch or router);
  2. for a computer-to-computer connection.

Checking is relevant only when you crimped the cable yourself. Cables bought in a store already with connectors are rarely inoperative.

Next, check if the network is correctly connected. The connection to the Internet can be direct (the provider's cable is connected to the network card of the computer) or through a gateway (router or other computer). The method of switching and access settings can be found in the technical support of the provider.

When connecting via a router, it is important not to confuse the connection jacks: the provider's cable is inserted into the “INTERNET” or “WAN” jack, and the network cards of computers are connected to the “LAN” jacks.

If you still can't connect, check if Windows has a network driver installed.

  • Open the device manager - in Winows 8 it is called from the context menu of the Windows (Start) button.

  • Expand the list of Network adapters and check if there is an Ethernet card. If it is detected as an unknown device, go to its manufacturer's website using a different Internet connection, download and install the driver.

After that, open the properties of the map through the context menu in the device manager

and make sure it works fine.

Next, open the "Power Management" tab and uncheck the "Allow shutdown to save energy" item, otherwise the connection will be interrupted.

If the connection is still restricted after installing the network driver, check if there are any interfering devices near the computer, router, or network cable routing: cordless phones, high-power power lines, microwave ovens. Try to move your network equipment away from such places.

Checking Windows network settings

Using a network diagnostic tool

The "Troubleshooting" tool allows you to identify and eliminate the causes of various network failures in Winows 8. To start it, click on the "Network" icon in the system tray and select the item of the same name.

If the problem is not automatically corrected, the diagnostic tool will indicate what caused it.

In this case, the cause will have to be looked for and corrected in other ways.

We start the services

The fact that the connection to the Internet is limited or absent is to blame for the failure of Windows network services. To test their work, open the service control application:

  • in the context menu of the Windows (Start) button, click the "Run" item;

  • enter the command in the "Open" field of the "Run" application services.msc and click OK. The application will launch.

In the service control program, test the following components:

  • DHCP client;
  • DNS client;
  • Network Save Interface Service;
  • Network configuration service.

If these Windows services are not running, the connection will not be created or will be limited to the local network only - without access to the Internet.

To configure autorun of network services together with Windows, open the properties of each of them (via the context menu).

Select Automatic from the Startup Type list. To start the service immediately, click the button of the same name in the "Status" section of the window.

Resetting Winsock and TCP / IP Settings

This operation restores the state of network structures - Windows 8 registry keys where Winsock configuration is stored. To reset, use the Windows console utility - netshell.exe. Accordingly, it is launched through the command line (from the administrator).

To reset Winsock and the TCP / IP protocol, follow the two instructions in the console one at a time: netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip reset.

Then restart your computer.

Correcting connection settings errors

To check the connection settings, enter the context menu of the Windows (Start) button and open the "Network Connections" folder.

Right-click to open the context menu of the connection and click the "Status" item.

The next window will display the main connection parameters:

  • DHCP (assigns an IP address and other settings to a connection for working in TCP / IP networks) - enabled or not;
  • IPv4 address - if it starts with 169.254 (APIPA address range), then the connection is not receiving a valid IP from the DHCP server. Such a connection will always be limited and will not be able to access the Internet.
  • Subnet mask - assigned automatically depending on the IP group.
  • Default Gateway - The IP of the network device used as the gateway for this connection.
  • DNS server is the address of the server that maps domain names to IP addresses of hosts.

To access the settings, click the Properties button in the Status window. In the next window, mark in the list of components "IP version 4" and click "Properties" again.

If the connection does not receive IP and other settings automatically, register them manually. If your computer is directly connected to the Internet (without a gateway), check with your ISP for the settings. When connecting through a gateway (router), one of the addresses of the local range to which the gateway belongs is assigned as IP. For example, if the router address starts with 192.168.1, the connection address must start with the same digits.

The "Default gateway" field contains the IP of the router.

Information on disabling a third-party firewall can be found in its help.

Eliminating other problems

The connection in the corporate network, which is limited by the administrator, makes no sense to try to reconfigure - it will still fail. And if it is limited at home, and this is definitely not the work of your loved ones, it is possible that a virus has started up in the system. For the same reason, access to the network may be closed for individual applications. To solve the problem, scan the system with an antivirus and check the network settings again.

If a failure occurs only in one application - check the network access settings in it and the rules for restricting it in Windows Firewall. If the source of the problem is not found, reinstall the program.
