Iconia Tab W700 in an aluminum case (against plastic counterparts from other manufacturers) with a large screen protected by special glass looks like a tablet for a business class. Build quality is excellent as always. A rubber gasket between the case and the screen glass prevents dust from getting on the internal parts.

Acer Iconia Tab W700 is rather thick and heavy, its weight is 950 g. It will not take long to hold in one hand. But these shortcomings can be forgiven, given that the tablet is packed with a powerful processor and a battery from a full-fledged laptop.

The two fan vents are a tribute to aesthetics. There is only one fan in the tablet, and it is very noisy. The active cooling system creates some annoying interference, even turning on while reading.

Additional equipment

Acer Iconia Tab W700 is a convertible tablet. With it, the manufacturer supplies a docking station with a built-in USB 3.0 port that only works when the dock is connected to a network. It comes with a wireless keyboard that connects to the tablet via Bluetooth.

The plastic dock serves as a stand for the tablet. Admittedly, Acer didn't spend too much money on the dock. Its appearance contrasts with an expensive and solid tablet. The dock can be used in landscape and portrait orientations without changing the tilt angle.

The keyboard of the Acer Iconia Tab W700 is commendable. It looks stylish and is quite comfortable to use. Standard size buttons are rare on tablets. Alternatively, the manufacturer offers a transformer complete with a cover and built-in keyboard.

Software

Windows 8 is the hit of the season. Consumers were amazed at the full-fledged computer software on mobile devices, but the first version managed to provoke protests and discontent.

The Acer Iconia Tab W700 comes with Windows 8 initially, but the system itself offers to upgrade to Windows 8.1. The tablet starts to slow down after the update. Updating the drivers available on the developer's site fixes the "glitches" of the system.

Windows 8.1 is called "full-fledged" for a reason. It is identical to the PC and laptop versions. Interestingly, Windows 8 was originally designed for touchscreen devices. Windows 8 tablets are faster and more convenient than devices with other operating systems.

Windows Store still offers few interesting applications, and many games and programs for mobile devices are not adapted for Windows 8. But, given that the tablet is equipped with a full version of Windows, you can install all the familiar computer applications. However, most of them cannot be used without a mouse.

Performance

The software developer has provided the ability to evaluate the performance of Windows 8. The built-in performance index version 8.1 stores the results in a system file.

Windows 8 scored 4.9 on the Acer Iconia Tab W700. When the object of consideration is a transforming tablet, it can be considered a good result. The GPU is Acer's weak link.

The Acer Iconia Tab W700 has a decent battery life. The tablet is equipped with a 4850 mAh battery. This is enough for the transformer to play video for 7.5 hours at maximum brightness. In reading mode, the tablet showed 11 hours. Acer will play for three hours at best. I was pleased with the charger from a full-fledged laptop. Thanks to him, the tablet charges very quickly.

Outcome

Improving the portability of computers has been a major challenge for manufacturers since the introduction of the first PC. Tablets have replaced laptops, as the latter replaced stationary computers in their time. Tablets on Windows 8 have become a new stage in the history of the development of computer technology. It is obvious that manufacturers are striving to create a mobile device that will not be inferior to older brothers in performance and power.

The Acer Iconia Tab W700 is a representative of this concept. A tablet equipped with an Intel Core processor pretends to be a desktop computer. Not to mention installing Windows 8 and updating it to version 8.1.

The trade-offs due to the use of powerful hardware filling slightly spoil the overall impression of the device. Of course, the thickness of the case could have been less, but the Acer Iconia W700 can still outperform the competition in its segment. Acer plans to release an updated version on a more powerful Intel Haswell processor, possibly fixing minor flaws in it.

The diagonal of the display of the tablet Acer Tab W700 is 11.6 inches. Its physical size is 256x144 mm, the aspect ratio is 16x9, the resolution is quite high for a similar diagonal - 1920x1080 pixels, while the density is 189 pixels per inch. It uses a high quality CineCrystal IPS matrix. The sensitivity and calibration accuracy are at a high level, the touch layer works out up to 10 simultaneous touches.

The viewing angles are maximum, the picture is not distorted at all, the brightness remains practically unchanged even under significant tilts of the screen. Brightness is adjustable in a wide range: from about 30 cd / m2 to 340 cd / m2. Naturally, there is a light sensor that adjusts the brightness quite smoothly and quickly. The contrast is approximately 950: 1.

All screen settings are familiar to Windows.

Battery

The tablet has a 3-cell 4850 mAh lithium polymer (Li-Pol) battery. The maximum power supply is 65 W. The developer does not provide any data on autonomy. I used the tablet in different modes with different screen brightness. On average, the tablet “lived” for about 10 hours: the brightness was 50%, the synchronization of mail and twitter was turned on, every hour for 20-30 minutes I browsed the sites, used the menu, launched office documents. In the Internet surfing mode, the device worked for about 8 hours - this is about 40% of the screen brightness, and all synchronization is turned on. If you want to watch a movie (HD 720p, sound output to headphones), then count on 5 hours at maximum brightness and about two hours if you “hack” into not the most resource-intensive toys. However, I tested the W700 on Need For Speed ​​Most Wanted. With NFS, the "battery" sat down after 1.5 hours (maximum brightness, sound output to the speakers).

The most interesting thing is that the W700 lay in "sleep" mode for about two weeks and was not discharged by one percent.

I can't say that the numbers are amazing, but almost all tablets do not often have a shorter runtime. I would compare the autonomy of the Acer Iconia Tab W700 with, of course, if you do not "strain" the first one by 100%.

Communication capabilities

The device is equipped with Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n (2.4 / 5 GHz) and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technologies. Both controllers operate on a Qualcomm Atheros (AR5BMD222) chip with a PCIe x1 interface.

During testing, no failures were observed: the Internet via Wi-Fi stably “reached” the tablet, and the keyboard via Bluetooth functioned without problems.

The performance index exposes the device to 5.4 points, the minimum value, which of course, is gaining a graphics accelerator. The processor is rated at 6.9 points, the memory is 5.9, the graphics in games are 6.3, and the hard drive is 8.1.

CPU-Z data

The graphics accelerator is also the usual integrated graphics of the Ivy Bridge line of processors - Intel HD Graphics 4000. Compared to Intel HD Graphics 3000, HD4000 has been redesigned and offers DirectX 11 capabilities. In theory, it can show performance up to 60% higher than HD3000.

I think that neither the processor nor the video card really needs a broad introduction. For those who are interested - the following data: Mass Effect 3 (low quality) at 1366x768 produces 23 - 33 frames per second, Dirt 3 (low quality) - 22 - 28 frames per second, Deus EX HR - 19 - 31 fps , Battlefield 3 - about 25 fps. In general, you can play, in principle, but at the minimum settings and at a low resolution.

When decoding FullHD video, there are no problems: videos are played smoothly without the slightest lags.

As for the noise, frankly speaking, even in the most difficult applications, the coolers did not overclock so much that they could be heard. Well, a lukewarm breeze - yes, it came out.

I would rate the volume of the built-in loudspeakers at 4 out of 5: at a distance of two meters you can hear it well, you don't have to strain your hearing. The quality is adequate, considering that we have a tablet in front of us.

Conventional bulky notebooks are gradually being replaced by lightweight ultrabooks with the same hardware, and over time they will be replaced by even lighter tablets. I love the current trend of making mobile devices easier to use, and the use of touch screens has played a big role in this. However, now is the turning point, when we already have powerful tablet computers, but they are still relatively large for comfortable use in all situations. Therefore, I believe that such devices are difficult to classify and clearly define the circle of consumers.

The case of Acer ICONIA W700, as for a tablet, is somewhat bulky. Perhaps it seems so because of the wide silver frame under the display and the bezels on the sides. The back of the tablet is made entirely of aluminum, except for a thin strip of plastic; both materials are slightly rough to prevent the tablet from slipping out of your hands. The top of the ICONIA W700 is durable Gorilla Glass. Above the display is the lens of the built-in webcam, and below it is the Windows button.

The rest of the tablet's design is pretty straightforward. The only thing that makes the model so attractive is the Acer logo and the name of the ICONIA line. The first one can be seen under the display and behind, and the ICONIA inscription is on the right side. The tablet has dimensions of 295x191x11.9 mm and a relatively heavy weight of 900 grams. It is he who, first of all, will cause inconvenience if you hold the tablet in your hands for a long time. But the build quality, on the contrary, pleased.

The ICONIA W700 uses an 11.6-inch CineCrystal Full HD display. Perhaps the advantage of the screen is not only the high resolution, but also the IPS technology, thanks to which the image on the display is perfectly visible even from the side without loss of clarity and color rendition. The viewing angles are 178 degrees. However, there are pitfalls in the resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Thus, the icons in the classic Windows 7 mode will be relatively small, which will cause difficulties with navigation, the text may also seem not very large.

The relatively high brightness level of the screen will allow you to work comfortably outdoors and indoors. Moreover, using the built-in light sensor, the backlight brightness will be adjusted automatically. By the way, despite the glossy display, there will be not so many reflections and glare.

To the above, we add that the tablet display supports 10-point multitouch, and the sensor itself is very sensitive. With a good screen responsiveness, you can quickly complete any task.

The acoustics of the tablet are two built-in speakers. They are located on the bottom of the tablet. The volume of the Acer W700 is enough for a small room, but the overall impression of the sound remains ambiguous. When playing tracks with pronounced bass, wheezing and distortion were heard, but when choosing more pop songs, the sound seemed slightly voluminous and cleaner. By the way, the tablet has Dolby Home Theater v4 software, which allows you to choose one of the preset profiles: video, music, games, or create your own.

The tablet has two HD cameras on the front and back. The first, with a resolution of 2 megapixels, is ideal for video calls, while the main 5-megapixel Acer CrystalEye with autofocus will allow you to take pictures or shoot videos. By the way, the pictures taken with the rear camera were not very high quality (blurry and a little grainy).

Keyboard

The touch keyboard of this tablet is absolutely typical. It has a standard layout, and switching from Russian to English is also simple.

Much more interesting is the external keyboard, which easily connects to the tablet via Bluetooth and works with it regardless of whether the ICONIA W700 is connected to the docking station or not.

The keys on the island keyboard are easy to press with good tactile feedback; You won't have to get used to the layout, it is standard. Above the key block is the keyboard power button.

Performance

The device runs on 64-bit operating system Windows 8. The Acer ICONIA W700-323b4G06as tablet is equipped with a dual-core low-voltage Intel Core i3-2365M processor with a clock speed of 1.4 GHz and a 3MB L3 cache. Due to the lack of Turbo Boost technology, the operating frequency of the processor always remains the same. However, there is support for Hyper-Threading, thanks to which the Core i3-2365M can simultaneously process multiple data streams. In general, the power of this processor is enough for the smooth operation of several running programs, for example, web surfing, video playback, photo editing and others.

There is also a package with a third generation Intel Core i5-3317U processor with a frequency of 1.7 GHz and an integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics card. In our configuration, the Core i3-2365M processor is complemented by an integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 with support for DirectX 10.1. It copes well with tasks typical for graphics accelerators. For example, it decodes video, allows you to play with undemanding toys.

The filling is complemented by 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal flash memory. The RAM is DDR3 and the SSD is connected via SATA / 300 providing bandwidth up to 3Gb / s. Unfortunately, the tablet lacks a card reader, so you won't be able to increase the amount of internal memory. Perhaps replacing the SSD with a more capacious one. However, there is a complete set ICONIA W700-53314G12as with 128 GB, so you can consider this option as well.

Ports and communications

There are no ports on the right side of the Acer ICONIA W700 tablet. Here you can see the audio jack, as well as two buttons: power on and volume control.

On the left there is Micro-HDMI, which allows you to connect the tablet to an external display and show, for example, a presentation (the kit includes a Micro-HDMI-VGA adapter). The left side also has a charging jack and a full-size USB 3.0.

In principle, one USB port should be sufficient, however, if you are going to connect a docking station, then it should be free. The docking station adds three high-speed USB 3.0 standards - enough for a flash drive, mouse or external hard drive. Although, if we analyze it as a whole, there are no significant additions here, but it would be nice to see a keyboard, network port or built-in battery (as in the W510).

By the way, the dock stand itself looks like a bracket. The tablet is inserted into it from the right side in such a way that the docking station covers the gadget on the right and bottom.

Unfortunately, you cannot change the tilt angle, but the detachable dock stand can be inserted so that the tablet is in portrait or landscape (70 or 20 degree tilt) orientation.

As for the top edge of the tablet, there are ventilation grilles and a slider that blocks the automatic rotation of the display. Air enters the tablet through the left hole, and exits through the right hole.

But below you can see the speakers of the speaker system. Interestingly, there are special holes for them in the docking station so that nothing interferes with the sound output. By the way, a space for the Windows key has been cut out in the dock, which makes it easier to work with the device.

As you noticed, there is no card reader on any of the edges, this excludes the increase in the amount of built-in memory using a microSD card.

Among the communications of the Acer W700 tablet there is not only Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n, but also Bluetooth, but there is no 3G module. The sensors include an accelerometer and a gyroscope.

Battery

The tablet has a 3-segment 4850 mAh lithium polymer battery. The non-removable battery is charged with a 65-watt power supply in 4 hours. I was pleasantly surprised by the duration of the video playback, in which the battery charge lasted more than 7 hours (at 60% brightness and Wi-Fi on). The tablet also showed good autonomy under load - about 2 hours 30 minutes. If the ICONIA W700 is left in idle mode, the battery will last more than 9 hours.

Also, the device can be proud of a high-quality IPS-display with high resolution and good battery life. Perhaps what the tablet really lacks is a memory card reader. In addition, it has been non-working since the beginning of the year - Windows has flown with all the data after official updates.
Very heavy - you can't take it with you for a walk or in a cafe.
The keyboard cover that came with the kit was unreliable and suffered very quickly from cat claws. In addition, he does not fully dress - the feeling that he is 3 mm small, and with him it is inconvenient to press the lock and sound buttons.
Weak speaker.
It discharges heavily, so you can only actively use it when charging.

1. The pre-installed version of the system from Acer is terrible. Installed clean Win 8 Pro x64.
2. Screen resolution is good, but in desktop mode it is difficult to do anything with your fingers.
3. Very cropped keyboard. There is not enough F-row, Fn is needed for many actions, Windows 8 buttons for some reason are duplicated with Fn + number, although they can be called with the usual Win + C, Win + I, etc.
4. The idea of ​​a docking station is not as cool as it seemed to me before the purchase, plus the ports are hidden far behind. It also does not allow the use of wide microHDMI adapters.

Part 1. Equipment, design, performance

Modern technology allows manufacturers to create almost endless variations of different product classes. For a tablet, they usually take a single-chip system, add several memory chips, charge with a battery, sprinkle with connectors, antennas, cameras and other trifles and cover with a touch screen. So there shouldn't be any problems with “inventing and doing”. For example, take a look at the current catalog of Acer: it contains 17 lines of notebook-class devices, and each line has several modifications (and one even has more than 40 (!)).

But it is much more difficult then to sell your creation and make money on it. The key to the success of a particular product is a unique combination of characteristics and cost, which will be of interest to a certain circle of consumers. Achieving an accurate hit is almost impossible. Even if you conduct surveys and research, actively work with consumers, then by the time the model is released, it turns out that the market has already changed, moreover, together with users and their needs, and competitors are not sitting still. The choice is also hampered by the fact that in most cases, for any product, you can find an analogue that has one or more characteristics that will be better. On the other hand, there are noticeably more consumers (in quantitative terms) than models on the market, so that even for the most unusual devices, if desired (and the right price policy), buyers can be found. Here we can cite as an example "remartphones" with screens over five inches or mobile workstations with powerful processors, RAID arrays and a couple of professional video cards in the format of a very large and heavy laptop.

Interestingly, a similar situation occurs in other areas. You don't have to look far for examples: the recently presented "Brand New Range Rover" (by the way, this name also intersects with a well-known product in IT) combines unique off-road qualities and premium interior design. It is difficult to imagine that supporters of style and comfort will overcome fords up to 90 cm deep or have a need for a cross-country angle of about 30 °. And vice versa - if you already went for a drive on stones, then the presence of valuable types of wood in the interior trim will hardly worry you.

Moving on to the object of today's article, we can say that in terms of form factor it is a tablet, in terms of configuration it is a candy bar, and in terms of hardware configuration it is an ultrabook. It is quite difficult to buy such an ambiguous device “just like that”. However, if the user has a clear idea of ​​the tasks and usage scenarios that need to be solved, then it may very well be that the Acer Iconia W700 will be the best choice for him.

Tablet set

The device comes in a fairly large box (44.5 × 24 × 12.6 cm) - for some models of modern laptops, it can be used twice as small. Considering that we are considering a tablet after all, the large size of the package speaks of a good package. And indeed it is. But first, let's talk a little about the design of the box. It is surprisingly very simple - a large photo with partial lamination and a name on the front side, barely visible options for mounting on a stand, the name of the tablet manufacturer and the Intel logo on the silver ends.

You can also see the QR code for the promotional video and the link to the product description. According to it, you can find out that in total there are three modifications of the W700 on the Russian market, differing in the processor, the volume of the solid-state drive and the configuration. Detailed information on the configuration of a specific device is given on a special sticker. In general, the box is quite stylish. But, in our opinion, it was worth adding a little more bright elements. Moreover, the weight of the kit, which is almost 4.5 kg, does not really correspond to the “airy” design in white and silver tones.

Inside the main package, in numerous compartments and boxes, there are: a tablet, a power supply and a cable, a leather case, a stand (of two elements) for stationary use, a wireless keyboard, a Micro-HDMI-VGA adapter, a white cloth for cleaning the screen, a quick user guide ( in Russian), a set of CDs with software. We'll talk about the tablet design in the corresponding section, and here we'll look at the rest of the delivery. The power supply looks good: a fairly small size, white matte plastic, a cable (also white) about 180 cm with Velcro for packaging and a thin (3 mm) connector for connecting to a tablet. But this beauty is spoiled by a power cable - one meter, three cores of 0.75 mm², a three-pin plug capable of withstanding 16 A 250 V. Apart from some peculiarities of local standards, this decision is very difficult to explain. Considering that 65 W is required from it, something simpler and more convenient could be implemented.

The leather case has a beige color and a soft gray lining. Feels like it will do a good job of protecting the tablet screen from damage. Installation is easy, the tablet is held firmly in the case. Additional design elements include a silver manufacturer's logo. The package leaflet contains options for using the cover as a stand. There are three positions in total: one almost horizontal for working with the on-screen keyboard and two "higher" for watching videos and other similar operations.

When installed in the case, all tablet controls remain accessible and usable. The only exception is the external camera: normally it is closed with a Velcro pocket. So if you suddenly want to take pictures with your hands on the road, you must remember to open the lens. Maybe this is not very convenient, but there is additional protection. We also note the presence of a pen or stylus mount (not included in the package).

The complete stand is designed for stationary installation on a desktop. It consists of two elements, combining which in different ways you can implement one of three options for placing the tablet: in portrait mode, in portrait mode with one of two tilt angles (for working with an external or on-screen keyboard). The elements themselves are made of matte white plastic, there is some silver paint and rubber inserts for a secure fit on the table. All controls and connectors on the tablet, except for the external camera and USB port, remain accessible. Speaker holes are provided for efficient sound transmission. The stand itself has an input for a power supply and an indicator of its connection, as well as three USB 3.0 ports. The latter are implemented through a hub and work only with an external power supply.

Based on the foregoing, it seems that this design can be used as an office docking station with power, mouse, keyboard, portable drives, network adapters and other peripherals connected. But with an external monitor, not everything is so good - the Micro-HDMI connector remains only on the tablet itself, and to connect an external device it will not be enough to simply dock the tablet. From a design point of view, in some cases the stepless tilt or the more accessible USB port may be lacking, and the width of the front corner may seem too wide.

An office PC kit would be incomplete without a keyboard. Acer Iconia W700 uses an external wireless model with Bluetooth interface. From the photographs, many will notice the similarity with the version of another well-known manufacturer, but in fact, the similarity is just external. The case material of the keyboard in question is plastic. The main part is painted in silver, the buttons themselves are matte white, the symbols on them are applied in black paint, additional functions are highlighted in gray. There are Bluetooth and charge level indicators on the top edge. A hardware power switch is provided to save batteries (2 × AAA). In case of loss of connection or the need to connect to another device, there is a "Connect" button. On the bottom of the keyboard there are rubber feet, on which it stands very firmly, despite its low weight (400 g). The possibility of changing the angle of inclination is not provided.

The physical dimensions of the keyboard correspond to the format of a tablet and 11.6 ″ laptops (field width - 277 mm, main buttons - 15 × 15 mm). A quite reasonable question arises: was it worth making a keyboard of exactly this size and with only five rows of buttons? Since if we are talking about efficient work at the desk, then “more” (within reasonable limits) usually means “better”. Perhaps, in this case, the equipment with just such a compact option is justified. If the user needs it, he can choose a suitable model for himself, and the standard one is fully functional as a semi-mobile version. Moreover, its weight is small (400 g with batteries). By the way, the orientation of the tablet on Windows 8 also affected this element: in addition to the usual keyboard shortcuts for controlling the player, brightness / volume and video output, the keyboard has several new ones for working in this version of the operating system.

It's a pity that we decided not to add a mouse. Perhaps the "hand of Microsoft" is visible here, which is trying to develop the popularity of the touch-interface of the new version of Windows. But for stationary use of a device with a relatively small screen size in the traditional interface of the operating system, the usual mouse is still preferable today.

A final note on packaging concerns the operating system and software recovery CDs. With the cost of a regular 32 GB USB 3.0 flash drive at 800 rubles, forcing the user to look for an optical drive somewhere in case of problems is at least strange. At the same time, the built-in drive does not have a recovery partition with a full system image, although this is good from the point of view of increasing the volume available to the user.

Design

Anything other than a "rounded rectangle" is very rare today in tablets. The Acer Iconia W700 is no exception. The dimensions of the device are about 295 × 192 × 12 mm, and the weight is 940 g. For the 11.6 ″ format, this is not bad, but it is difficult to compare with traditional tablets in these parameters. These numbers are more similar to those of some models of ultraportable notebooks and ultrabooks, such as the Acer Aspire S7. But it should be noted that the choice in this category is not that great.

The main body material is aluminum. No paint is used, the matte finish is quite pleasant and beautiful. The grain is larger than that of the known unibody devices, so it will be comfortable to hold the tablet. At the back, in the upper part, you can see a strip of white plastic, fortunately not glossy, behind which, apparently, are the antennas of the wireless interfaces.

Slightly lower, on the left, there is a 5 megapixel camera window, near which there is an indicator of its operation. The lens itself is slightly recessed, so you can safely put the tablet on the table.

The front side is almost completely given to the tablet screen, the manufacturer does not indicate the material of the outer cover. Around it is a low rubber rim, which serves to protect the screen. Note that the body itself is noticeably larger than the matrix - the frame is about 2 cm at the top and sides, 2.5 cm at the bottom. At the top in the center is the front-facing camera with an activity indicator, and at the bottom is the Windows button, pressing which returns the user to the Metro interface start screen (hereinafter, we omit the "previously known by name" note).

On the top edge there is a sliding non-locking screen rotation lock switch. Rotation works in applications that support this function, including the traditional desktop, the orientation is determined by the built-in sensor. Also visible here are two grilles of the active cooling system. At the bottom you can see stereo speakers, and in the center there is a hidden hardware reset button for the device.

The left side was chosen for the microphone, Micro-HDMI output, USB 3.0 port, and charger input. The last two connectors are used when placing the tablet in the docking station.

There is a power control button on the right, it can be used to turn on / off and put the device to sleep / wake up. It has a built-in battery charging indicator, but it does not work in all power saving modes, which is not very convenient. Below there is a volume rocker and a standard headphone or headset jack. With some effort, next to them on the display frame, you can see the light sensor window.

In general, the design can hardly be called original, but the device looks quite attractive. A thin metal bezel on the front gives the tablet a sleek look. However, given its rather large dimensions and thickness (visually, it seems smaller due to the bevel on the bottom surface), I would like to see more ports: for example, USB, microSD or even Thunderbolt.
