How to install sound on a laptop. I lost sound on my laptop - what should I do? Complete guide to solving the problem

Frequently encountered queries in search engines, according to statistics, are issues related to the lack of sound, as can be seen in the screenshot from Google below.

Why is there no sound on my laptop?

This problem can occur on any laptop with any operating system, therefore, below we give a list of actions that must be performed sequentially for all. Perhaps, after one of them, the sound that is missing in the laptop will appear. The problem can be caused by two factors: software or hardware. Let's start simple and move on to more complex.

1. Restart your laptop.

If the sound is missing for the first time, restart your laptop. It will probably appear when Windows starts loading.

2. Check the speakers

If you are using external speakers to reproduce sound, check that they are plugged in, that all wires and plugs are connected, and that the volume control is not turned off.

3. Is Windows sound muted?

Pay attention to the icon in the system tray (lower right corner of the screen). If there is a red crossed out circle next to the image of the white speaker, you need to increase the volume by moving the slider up.

4. Check system settings

Open up Start - Control Panel - Sound and check all parameters. Here in the Control Panel you can open the menu of your audio codec IDT or Realtek, and see if their settings are normal.

5. Update drivers

Open up Start - Control Panel - Device Manager... In the list of devices, find the tab Sound, video and game devices... Right-click on your codec (IDT or Realtek HD) and in the context menu that opens, try to disable-enable the device, or update the drivers. You can also open the laptop manufacturer's website in the browser, find your model on it and download sound drivers for it.

The above steps will fix the problem 99% of the time. The chances of a malfunction of the speakers themselves are very small, so if you are not successful, contact a more experienced friend or a service center. You should not write in the comments requests to help restore sound on the laptop, it is useless, since it is impossible to do this remotely without seeing your laptop and the settings set in it before your eyes. The problem often lies in the little things, like an extra checkbox, the adjustment slider dragged in the wrong direction, the driver is not installed.

If the sound in the headphones or skype has disappeared, or the Fn key simply does not work, do not despair. Everything is fixable. In addition, the lack of sound on laptops is not as rare a problem as it might seem at first glance.

Causes

Among the main reasons, it is worth highlighting:

  • lack of required drivers;
  • defective speakers and connectors;
  • incorrect setup of the audio system;
  • in the standard system tools there is a check mark "Disabled".

Checking the management service

You can find out why the sound does not work on a laptop only after checking all possible options. It is worth starting with the simplest thing - check the settings in the standard management service... Very often it is custom actions that lead to this problem.

You can check the settings in three ways:

  • using the "Personalization" window, which we open through the context menu. Open the "Sound" tab and see which scheme is involved, we can listen to what working audio programs are currently being used, etc .;
  • using the volume mixer located in the system tray. Here you can check if it is turned off completely, as well as set the volume level for each of the programs: QIP, Skype, etc .;
  • using media player settings. To do this, run the installed program and look at the settings.

Eliminate the reasons

In order to eliminate the cause, you need to establish it. You need to start sorting through the options from simple to complex. First, we check the system settings to see if it is disabled at all. Next, make sure that the installed drivers are not damaged, their version matches the hardware.

If all this is in order, then it is worth checking the hardware, connectors, sound card. At home, it will be difficult, and in some cases even impracticable at all, so it is better to turn to professionals in specialized service centers.

Why the sound does not work in the laptop

There are problems with individual programs. Then, thinking why the sound on the laptop does not work, initially it is worth checking the settings of the program itself. If you are sure that everything is in order with the distribution kit, you installed a high-quality version, followed all the instructions exactly during the installation process, you can safely proceed to checking its settings.

But if everything is perfect with the settings, then it is worth looking for the reason further, especially if the problem is in many programs.

Checking for a driver

You need to make sure that the sound card driver installed on the laptop exactly matches your version of the operating system. Otherwise, you need to find on the disk that was sold with the laptop, or download the version of the card driver you need for your operating system on the official website on the Internet.

It is worth checking both the driver version and its availability. Sometimes, after reinstalling the operating system, the driver may not reinstall. Naturally, without it there will be no audio output.

Is the audio system connected correctly?

Initially, it is worth checking the settings of the operating system itself. To do this, go to the "Control Panel" and open the "Sound" tab. Here we can see all the available audio systems. In the window that opens, we see a list of audio systems. Unavailable audio systems are marked in red, audio systems already connected and available for use are marked in green.

If there is no green check mark on the audio system you connected in this window, then you connected it incorrectly. Check again that the connectors are connected correctly, that there are drivers and their version.

Customization

Before starting the configuration, you need to make sure that you have connected the correct hardware correctly, that there are no conflicts due to driver incompatibility, and that damaged drivers are not being used.

If everything is in order, you can go directly to setting the parameters:

  1. open "Control Panel" - "Hardware and Sound". A window will open with the tabs: "Playback", "Recording", "Sounds", "Communication". In the first tab, we configure the parameters of speakers and headphones. In the "Recording" tab we can configure the microphone parameters;
  2. the "Playback" tab contains a list of equipment that can be connected. Green check marks indicate what is already connected to the system. Select it and move on to setting it up. You need to choose a configuration based on what equipment you have connected. If headphones or two speakers are connected, it is better to choose the “Stereo” option. If 4 speakers are connected together with a subwoofer - select "5.1 surround sound". After that, click on the "Next" button, and indicate which of the columns are side and which are in front;
  3. after confirming the existing configuration, click on the "Finish" button and go to properties, i.e. indicate:

On the "General" tab, we see through which connectors the equipment can be connected to the computer. The most suitable ones are highlighted in green.

After saving the changes made, proceed to setting up the microphone. To do this, go back to the "Control Panel" - "Sound" and select the "Record" tab.

We see a list of devices that can be connected. Those that are active are highlighted with a green check mark.

Let's move on to configuring them:

On other tabs, you can set the microphone sensitivity, connect other devices to the input, etc.

If after performing these manipulations the problem has not been resolved, you must:

  • make sure the speakers are connected correctly again. Check if they are enabled;
  • check if it is disabled in the audio player, in the computer;
  • check for driver availability, compliance with its version;
  • use the "Troubleshooter" located in "Control Panel" - "Troubleshoot" - "Troubleshoot audio playback problems".

Lost in headphones

If the sound in the headphones does not work, you need to check if the connector is properly connected to the laptop. If after this check the situation has not changed, you need to sort out other options.

Checking if the headphones are connected correctly is the same as checking the audio system connection. We go to the "Control Panel - Sound", on the playback tab, we are looking for our headphones in the list of devices. If there is, then everything is in order with the drivers and you need to check the correct connection of the connectors. If the list does not include headphones, check the availability and version of the driver for this device.

You also need to make sure that it is not turned off by means of a button on the headphones themselves. The reason for this can be any malfunction of the device - damage to the cable, etc.

Video: the FN key does not work in a laptop

Control function (key) does not work

Modern laptops have many functional options for customization - these are keys, switches, etc. The Fn key allows you to quickly access some system settings, including sound settings. It is almost always located at the bottom of the left edge of the keyboard.

By holding Fn, you can add or decrease the volume on the system. You should definitely check if it is completely disabled in such a simple way. If it is disabled, you just need to change the situation to the opposite.

If Fn does not work, you can use System Restore. This is the fastest way to achieve the desired effect without going deep into the causes of the problem. But if you want to thoroughly understand the situation, you should go the other way.

BIOS settings

Incorrect BIOS settings can cause the button to become inoperable. On different laptop models, the menu responsible for these settings may differ. Therefore, you just need to go to BIOS and see what parameters are set there that are responsible for the functionality of this button.

If the control button does not work, you need to diagnose it. To do this, you just need to check its effect in different programs. If you find out for sure that a specific button on your keyboard is out of order, you need to fix this situation.

Changing the button on your own can be problematic, so it is better to use the services of a service center. In most cases, the entire keyboard is subject to replacement, since it can be difficult to select a specific button, in view of the variety of types and shapes of keyboards.

As you can see, its absence is not such a rare problem. It may disappear after updating the driver, operating system, after making system settings, or for some other reason.

In any case, don't panic. It is necessary to check the possible options for disappearance and fix the problem, unless, of course, the reason lies in faulty equipment, which can be problematic to fix at home, and for most users, an impossible task at all.

Initially, it is worth checking if it is disabled in the system tray, media player. Perhaps the reason is in the microphone, speaker, pulled cord. If this is all right, we check the software part. If everything corresponds to the norm here, then the reason is in the hardware term.

For diagnostics, you can turn to specialists who can, in a matter of minutes, using special tools, accurately establish a breakdown and offer the best way out of this situation. But first you need to check all the possible options yourself.

Sound problems can be a serious test for the laptop owner. But drop all stereotypes - in most cases, even a novice user can cope with this nuisance. If you are also asking the question: “The sound on my laptop does not work for me, what should I do?” - then this article is for you.

Checking regulators

To immediately rule out one of the most basic audio problems - let's check the volume controls. Firstly, if the video is played from the Internet, you need to click on the speaker icon and increase the volume. Then try the controls on your speakers. If this procedure did not help to return the sound, we move on.

Important! When playing media files in a browser, one important point should be taken into account - sometimes the lack of sound may be due to an outdated version of the flash player. We recommend that you update it and try again before moving on.

Correct connection of audio devices

You also need to make sure that the speakers and headphones are correctly connected to the outputs of the sound card. Usually the speakers are connected to the green output of the sound card. It is important to check the performance of the speakers themselves, otherwise further steps to adjust the sound may be in vain. The easiest way to check is to connect the speakers to the phone as headphones and turn on the music.

Audio parameters

Windows Audio Service

Let's try to find the reason for the lack of sound using the Windows Audio service:

Configuring sound in BIOS

To configure sound through BIOS, we need:

After that, the computer will reboot and start working with the new settings.

Possibly speakers

One of the main reasons for the loss of sound can be the inoperability of the speakers - a kink or a crease in the cord, connection to the wrong input.

In this case, we proceed as follows:

Attention! The deterioration of these inputs is a common problem. Sometimes you may need to untwist the system unit and correct them a little - remove and reinsert. It will also be useful to clean them with dust that interferes with the normal signal.

Do not forget to check if the speakers are connected. This is usually indicated by an LED located on their front panel. We check the sound, increasing it to the maximum (in this case, a characteristic hiss should appear in the speakers).

Driver check

Malfunctioning driver is another common reason why the sound does not work on a laptop.

Let's check it out:

Attention! To diagnose your sound device (and other components of your PC), you can use the Everest program, which indicates not only the model of your sound card, but also provides links to download the necessary drivers.

  1. download and install drivers, reboot the system.

If the sound card is not displayed in Windows, this may signal a malfunction of the device or its incorrect connection. We recommend cleaning the PC from dust and, if the card is not built-in, blow out its slot and reconnect it.

You can also try to install a different version of the driver - an older or newer one. A driver conflict may be the cause of the lack of sound. In such a case, installing a different version may help.

Sound card status

Partially checking the sound card has already been mentioned in the previous paragraphs. Initially, it is worth considering how old the device is and whether it is possible for it to fail. If the board is new enough, this also does not guarantee its performance.

Checking her work:

The sound on the laptop works, only in the headphones

This behavior of the device is due to the peculiarity of laptops as such - they have an automatic switch that allows you to configure and switch between headphones and speakers. If the sound is present only in the headphones, there is a problem with it. In this case, you can try reinstalling the driver (we wrote about this procedure above). If the problem persists, we recommend contacting a specialist.

Video: The sound on the laptop is missing

Sound keys don't work

What if the sound keys stop working? You can cope with this nuisance yourself. On laptops, the sound (as well as the brightness of the screen and the inclusion of a wireless connection) is controlled by the FN key. If for some reason it stopped working, only reinstalling the driver or special software can help.

Let's consider this process in stages:

  1. go to the manufacturer's website and find your laptop model (or a model of the same series);
  2. find the support section and view the utilities available for download;
  3. for example, for Asus notebooks, a similar program is called "ATK";
  4. click on this name, select your version of the operating system and download the file;
  5. unzip it and start installation;
  6. after the end, we check the performance of FN.

Important! To turn the sound on and off, use the combination FN-F10. With the help of F11 and F12 it is adjusted.

We have covered the most common reasons why sound does not work on laptops. By following our simple instructions, you can troubleshoot problems yourself. If you come across a case that does not fit into any of the categories we have considered, write about it using the comment form.

If we compare a computer and a laptop, it turns out that the latter device is more problematic. Therefore, users often prefer to have a PC, despite the portability of a laptop. What are the problems with the laptop?

The fact is that a laptop is a device that is difficult to take apart. If in a computer it is possible to separate the video card, sound card or RAM from the motherboard, then in a laptop most of the components are built into the motherboard. Therefore, if there are any problems with one piece of hardware, the whole system can suffer from it. If the entire system suffers, it will be very expensive to replace it. But with a computer in this regard, things are easier. The video card is broken - we take it out and replace it with a new one. It's the same with the sound card. But what to do if the sound on the laptop disappears?

Causes

There are many reasons for this problem. Most of them can be solved programmatically by correcting some settings or updating drivers. But if the problem lies in the sound card, then more serious troubles may arise.

If you notice that the sound on your laptop is missing, what should you do first? Do not rush to grab the device and carry it to the service center. There can be many reasons for this breakdown. Some can be solved on their own in just a few minutes. Among the main reasons are:

  • problems with the playback device;
  • reset volume settings;
  • failure of drivers;
  • sound manager settings;
  • activation of the sound card in BIOS;
  • audio and video codecs.

Playback device

It is possible to determine why the sound is lost on a laptop without the help of specialists. To do this, it is enough to take a close look at the devices that reproduce sound. For example, headphones served as such a device for you. They often have problems that are difficult to solve. Most of them lead to the fact that the headset is sent back to the store, to the service center, or even to the trash.

If you were listening to music on a laptop, turn them off and listen to whether the laptop speaker plays the melody. If everything is in order, then most likely there are problems with the headphones. But such a check does not guarantee that the headset is actually broken. It happens that you used headphones in the evening, the next day you turned on your laptop, but it does not make sounds. You unplug your headset, but the speakers also don't make any sound. As practice shows, this is a common hardware failure. You need to connect and disconnect the headphones several times, and the sound will appear.

Often users use speakers instead of headphones. Acoustics are also not eternal; problems occur with it that are difficult at first to correctly assess. The speakers can be damaged, their plug or power cable can be damaged. In this case, it's best to test them on another device. This is more likely to show the whole situation. Perhaps it was a malfunction of the acoustics that led to the loss of sound on the laptop.

And finally, no matter how silly it may sound, with such a breakdown it is important to check the sockets and plugs. You may have forgotten to plug your speakers into a power outlet or turn them on. The wire that connects to the laptop may have been damaged. All this can also cause the described problem.

Volume settings

Not all PC users are experienced. The knowledge of some is limited only to starting the system and entering the browser. Therefore, it is important for such people to be attentive to all processes that occur at the time of their use of a laptop.

If you notice that the sound has suddenly disappeared on a laptop (with Windows or another operating system - it doesn't matter), take a closer look at the tray (lower right corner of the screen). This area usually displays the date and time, there is a setting for the input language, wireless network, power supply, etc. There is also a special sound icon.

It so happens that by pressing some key combination you could make the volume quieter or completely muffle it. In this case, you need to click on the icon in the tray and see: if there is a cross on it, then the sound is turned off, if not, perhaps the volume scale is turned to the left, so the sound is very quiet, and therefore it seems that it has disappeared.

Mixer

But that's not all. If you right-click on the sound icon, the usual volume scale will open, and if you use LMB, you can select several settings. First, go to the mixer.

This option is also important in sound settings. The mixer indicates several programs on the laptop at once that use sound. For example, Skype, browser, system sounds, etc. can be displayed here. Each program has its own volume scale. The browser volume may have been turned off, which is why when you turned on the video on the Internet, you thought that the sound was missing on your Windows 7 laptop.

Next, you need to check the installed playback device. To do this, LMB click on the tray icon and select the appropriate section. The sound setting will open. The first tab will list the playback device. There may be several of them. You need to look closely at the names. It so happens that one speaker system is installed instead of another.

It is important to set everything up correctly. If you cannot determine which of the devices you need, try clicking LMB on each of them and turning it on in turn. When you select the one you want, you will notice that the volume scale is activated next to the name.

Alternatively, you can also try running the internal troubleshooting service. To do this, again left-click on the tray icon. We find the line "Detect problems with sound." The system will independently start diagnostics and, as errors are found, it will indicate solutions. Sometimes it will automatically fix the problem.

System drivers

If all of the above solutions did not work, what should I do? Chances are, the problem is with the drivers. Let's say you notice that the sound on your laptop is missing. How do I fix this problem? You need to check the correctness of the drivers. To do this, go to the "Start" menu, in the right column we find the "Control Panel" section. A new window will open in which you will need to find the "Device Manager" section. All connected devices to the system will appear in a new dialog box. Immediately you need to find the line that relates to the sound. Most often it is called Sound, Video and Game Controllers.

Click on the plus sign next to this name. Another list will open, in which all devices belonging to this category will be indicated. You need to look at them carefully. You may notice that there is an exclamation mark or a red cross next to one of them. This means that the device is out of order.

If something really happened with the drivers, you need to click on the faulty device LMB and select "Disable" and "Enable" again. If that doesn't work, click Update Drivers. If this did not give any result, you can try to remove this device from the system. Uninstallation may work, but you will have to install new drivers to do this. If there are no installation discs left, search the Internet for the files you need. Most of them are on the official website of the laptop manufacturer.

If you did not notice any exclamation marks or crosses, see if there is an "Unknown device" in the list. There is a possibility that the system could not determine the model of the device and install drivers for it, so this will need to be done on your own.

Helper program

To cope with the drivers and fix the problem with the loss of sound on the laptop ("Windows 10" can especially "please" the user with this and other problems), you can install a special program. In the future, it will definitely come in handy for restoring other devices. Driver Booster is free to install. It quickly checks and finds the correct drivers for all devices in the system. The user only needs to give his consent to download the corresponding files.

Sound Manager Problems

Above, we examined the sound settings in the system itself. But there is another service that helps to cope with deeper customization of the device. Such a program is installed along with the sound drivers. In almost all systems it is called Realtek High Definition Audio. The utility helps you to set the optimal settings if there are any problems with the sound.

To do this, go to the "Control Panel", as described above. Then you need to select the viewing option. It's in the upper right corner. You can choose to display large or small icons, as well as select the "Category" section. Just the last option and you need to click. All elements are rebuilt in the dialog box. You need to find "Hardware and Sound" and select the very last item.

The built-in sound settings service will open. It needs to be examined carefully. Depending on the requirements, you can customize the sound for yourself.

BIOS settings

Also, if sound is missing on a Windows laptop, what should I do? Of course, BIOS is one of the last options that could crash. Nevertheless, there are also such cases that the laptop turns off the sound card, and you need to turn it on yourself.

To go to BIOS, you need to turn off the computer and press the Del or F2 button while it starts. This is a common way to get to this menu. But it is not always so. Therefore, check in advance on the Internet what combination of buttons your particular laptop model supports.

The BIOS version may also differ depending on the firmware. Therefore, you will have to "travel" around the menu. You need to find the Audio or Advanced section. There you will notice the name of the sound card. Most often it sounds like High Definition Audio. Disabled will be written opposite the line if the option is disabled and Enabled if enabled. Select the item you want and don't forget to save your changes. Below is the key that must be pressed for the changes to take effect.

Working with codecs

It happens that the sound disappeared on the laptop during the playback of a track or movie. In this case, you all hear. Chances are, you are faced with codecs. What do we have to do?

  • remove existing codecs;
  • restart the laptop;
  • download and install new codecs.

Removing codecs will depend on what software you are using. Therefore, it is difficult to describe the algorithm of actions here. For each available program, it can be different. Usually, when starting a movie, you need to go to the player's menu, and then find the "Filters" item. It is in it that the codecs are indicated. You can also use a special program that allows you to manage codecs.

Windows 10

It so happens that the sound disappeared on a laptop with Windows 10 on board. In this case, there are no fundamental differences in fixing this problem with respect to other systems. It is also necessary to check the playback device first, after examining the sound settings, both system and software. We'll have to work with the drivers and BIOS.

Solution

If none of the above suits you, and there is still no sound, you can start sinning on the sound card. If the laptop has problems with it, then you will have to take it for repair or buy an external device.

If you decide to renovate it, chances are that it will take a lot of your time and money. Therefore, many people choose to purchase an external sound card. It looks like a regular flash drive that has microphone and headphone jacks. Of course, the ideal option is to purchase a "native" sound card, but if this is not possible, try to find the highest quality model.

This solution has one drawback. It is difficult to know for sure that the problem is in the sound card. It is possible that viruses or a clogged system are causing the audio problems. Therefore, many finally recommend reinstalling the operating system. There is a chance that some system files were damaged, which will be restored during the installation of the OS. If this option does not help, then the problem is definitely in the sound card.

There can be several reasons for the loss of sound on a laptop, and you can deal with some of them yourself at home. The reasons for the disappearance of sound can be divided into hardware and software.

The hardware rooms include a malfunction of the sound card (repairs in a workshop will be required), malfunctioning speakers or headphones, failure of speakers on a laptop, malfunctioning communications (plugs, connectors, cables, etc.).

Software malfunctions include sound settings in the operating system, player, audio manager, driver updates, etc.

Finding the reason for the loss of sound

If the sound on the laptop disappears, what to do at home, what measures to take.

First . Checking sound level in the notification area... At the bottom right of the working window, next to the clock, there is a speaker icon, by clicking on it with the left mouse button, you will see the volume level. Set it to maximum for now. Here you click on the mixer and see the volume controls, also look at the sound on the speaker icon.

How to turn on the sound on a laptop using the keys. The laptop may have a mute button on the keyboard. Maybe the Mute mode is turned on through the keyboard, the desired key is turned on by pressing the Fn + key. Press a couple of times and check the sound. The crossed out speaker should disappear from the screen.

You can adjust the volume (sound) level on a laptop by clicking on the speaker icon in the notification area (tray) and using the "Fn + buttons with the speaker icon" (usually these buttons are the same color as the Fn key). You need to press the Fn button and, without releasing it, press the volume up or down buttons several times.

If the sound on the laptop is quiet, then you need to check all the volume controls, both software and hardware.

Second. Check speakers... To do this, you need to connect an external device (headphones, active speakers, etc.), if sound appears on an external device, you will need to replace the laptop's speakers. Internal speakers on a laptop can fail when working at maximum volume, and for this reason the speakers can begin to wheeze.

If you often used headphones and often inserted a plug into the connector, then the contacts could deteriorate over time. This is especially indicated when, when headphones are connected, the sound reproduction changes (appears, disappears, noise appears, etc.). You need to change the connector in the laptop, you need a specialist.

If the sound card is not working properly, there may be noise, intermittent sound cuts or no sound at all. It is impossible to change the integrated sound card, in which case you can connect an external sound card via USB.

Third . Check Sound Manager(separately installed sound program from the sound card manufacturer). This could be the Realtek High Definition Audio Manager, which is usually located in the notification bar. If it is not there, then you can advise to install the sound driver again, or update it.

Fourth. Check drivers. We go to the device manager and find "Sound devices". If the device is disabled, then enable. If there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the device, then you need to reinstall the driver.

Device Manager

How to enter the device manager: hover the mouse over the "computer" and press the right mouse button, select properties and then "device manager". You can also click "Start" and "Control Panel", in the window that opens, click on the item "System" and there will already be a section "Device Manager".

In the manager, look for your sound card in the sound devices and press the right mouse button, select "update driver". After updating the driver, it is advisable to reboot the system.

If, when updating the driver, the system itself did not find the required driver, then it must be either on a disk to the motherboard with all the drivers, or it can be downloaded from the website of the sound card manufacturer, if the card is built-in, then from the website of the laptop manufacturer.

Sometimes you may need to reinstall the drivers, even if the system says that they do not need updating and everything works fine, but there is no sound.

Fifth. Check Windows "audio" services.

Audio service path: "control panel -> administration -> services -> Windows audio" - this service must be running. If this is not the case, then go to the properties of this service (right-click on the name of the service) and start, as well as set automatic start.

If the audio service is stopped again at the next boot, you can manually add it to autostart.

Sixth. For the built-in sound card, you can check inclusion in BIOS.

We go into the BIOS and find the device item (advanced), find the item with the word audio, for example “High Definition Audio” and set “Enabled” if it was “Disabled”.

You can enter the BIOS when you turn on or restart the laptop, you just need to periodically (every second) press the key, which is indicated for each system separately. You can see the name of such a key at boot time, when the system itself writes that to enter the BIOS, press such and such a key, such a message reads as "Press F2 to Setup". Instead of the F2 key, it can be DEL, F10, F12. Going into the BIOS, find the section "Devices Configuration", or "Integrated Peripherals", or "Onboard Devices Configuration", or "Advanced", and already there you need to find the settings for our sound, the name of the item may contain the word "Audio". The item "High Definition Audio", or another name for your card, should be Enabled.

1) If the sound disappeared after installing programs or updates, then try roll back the system at the time when the sound worked normally. If the sound is restored, then the problem may be in conflict with a new program or updates.

2) If the sound in the laptop stops working and the system writes that device is being used by another application, then you need to look in the tray (next to the clock) which of the applications are running. You can also look at the running applications in the task manager. Try turning off those that can use sound (players, record players, etc.). If you find such applications, after turning off which sound appears, then you need to remove them from autorun.

3) The sound on the laptop disappeared.What to do: if in sleep mode laptop went with the headphones, then the headphones were taken out and the laptop was taken out of sleep mode. And there is no sound. It helped: go into sleep mode again, but go out with the headphones inserted. That is, repeat the operation in the reverse order (we put it into sleep mode without headphones, and take it out of the mode with headphones already). This can be the case when connecting other interfaces using sound, such as HDMI.

4) If you right-click on the volume icon in the tray, you can see the items for selecting playback devices. Choose playback devices and see if the device is selected for audio playback. You need to choose speakers for listening to sound on your laptop. If you connected a TV, for example, via HDMI, then another device may be selected.
