Replacing the glass on the iPad Pro. What do you need to know? Tools and preparation

Hurray, they brought us a brand new Apple iPad Pro 10.5. I spent a week with him, and now I want to tell you what Apple did to him, what you need to take and go to the store for the tablet. What's so great about the new tablet? A bigger screen, a more powerful filling, a better camera, and most importantly, iOS 11 is on its way, which has a lot of new and interesting things. We have dedicated a separate one to the key points of iOS 11, so I'm going to get to the bottom of it.

A bit of history

I have been using the iPad Air 2 for several years, before it there was Air, before it the whole line of large tablets from Apple, because I try to try on what the company produces. Why didn't I upgrade to Pro 9.7 when it came out? I was embarrassed by the difference in price, I would have to pay too much money, and I did not feel much difference in the speed of work.

So the iPad Pro 10.5 is especially interesting to me - whether it's worth changing the Air 2 to it or not, there is still a time difference between the two. Let me remind you that the iPad Air 2 debuted in October 2014, and the distance of 2.5 years between tablets is a tangible period. In addition, I recently tested “just an iPad”, it came out as a very successful device, the impressions after using another novelty were still vivid in my memory.

Bigger screen, smaller bezels

The iPad Pro 9.7 wasn’t close at hand, so I put the old Air 2 next to the Pro 10.5 so you could see the difference. The new items have cut the frames around the screen, the body has slightly increased, the diagonal has grown by 20% in comparison with the usual Apple 9.7 ''. If you do not compare the old tablet with the new one, holding both in your hands, then you will not feel the difference. The novelty has become a little heavier, but the case is still thin - 6.1 mm, nothing bends, the assembly is solid. New body colors have not appeared, and it's a pity, color differentiation has not been canceled, it would have been easier to stand out against the general background.

iPad Pro 10.5 on the left, it is slightly larger, the insert with the antenna is neatly made. But there is a camera module, the Air 2 does not have such a defect, but the camera is simpler in it.

Display

The feeling of the new screen cannot be conveyed in the text, you need to see it. iPad Pro works unnaturally fast and smoothly, it feels like watching a video not 30, but 60 fps. At first, this excessive smoothness is even annoying, it seems as if an artificial process is in front of your eyes. But no, there is no magic - this is the ProMotion function, when, depending on the operating mode, the frequency changes from 24 to 120 Hz. For example, in games, the frequency decreases, and when scrolling through sites, on the contrary, it increases.

In addition, iPad supports the DCI-P3 wide color gamut profile. The picture is juicy, bright, very beautiful. Again, the difference is noticeable if you put an old generation device next to it, but if you don't have one at hand, it will be difficult to feel the difference. On the left in the pictures is the iPad Pro, on the right is the Air 2.

Retained TrueTone setting when display changes white balance based on lighting conditions. Night mode is a standard feature in iOS. Few numbers: 10.5 inches, resolution 1668x2224 pixels, very clear and high-quality image. Are the smaller frames getting in the way? No, everything is fine, no mistakes.

Is a tablet more powerful than a laptop?

iPad Pro 10.5 pumped up, now there is an A10X processor with a frequency of 2.4 GHz and 4 GB of RAM, so the tablet gives out space figures in benchmarks. Yes, the iPad is already playing on the same field with Apple laptops according to measurements in Geekbench, it's scary to think what will happen in a couple of years. You ask, why such hardware, why such a margin of performance? Even old devices can edit photos and videos, and without noticeable brakes, how much more powerful?

All that remains is to make a helpless gesture: Apple can annually release more and more about swinging tablets, motivating customers to switch to iOS devices for work. Yes, there are relevant commercials, but people are still true to their habits and are reluctant to migrate from laptops.

The performance has increased, the screen has grown, the battery life remains the same - Apple claims 10 hours of battery life. Out of interest, I launched a YouTube video at maximum brightness, the tablet sat down by 12% in an hour. It takes about 25% in an hour to play, and the same goes for video editing in iMovie. With an average brightness of the screen, the charging is enough for 7 hours of working with the Internet, watching videos and editing texts. In my opinion, the old Air 2 lasts a little longer in the same mode.

Camera

Apple sold out and shoved a camera from the iPhone 7 into the iPad: 12 megapixels, high-aperture optics with f / 1.8, video recording in 4K and a high-quality 7 megapixel selfie camera. Hmm, but once the iPad only had a front camera of poor quality. Now times have changed, the tablet takes pictures at the level of a top-end phone. It is a pity that there is no protection from the water, but that would be an ideal camera for taking pictures while on vacation by the sea - it is a pleasure to take pictures with such a huge viewfinder.

Photo and video quality is excellent, I often see tourists from Asia filming Moscow sights on tablets. It somehow did not take root in our country, but in other countries there are different approaches to creativity. In addition, in iOS 11 there will be new chips like a QR code scanner, it will be more convenient to walk past tourist sites and learn about their history.

This is he screaming

The iPad Pro is one of the few devices on the market with such gorgeous speakers. For the sound I fell in love with Pro 9.7, now I continue to love the version with a 10.5-inch screen as well. 4 speakers are something, no matter how you take a tablet, you will get loud, juicy, high-quality sound. It's nice to watch the video, the tablet plays music mentally, the volume margin is such that passers-by are displeased when testing the iPad's vocal capabilities to the fullest. Better only iPad Pro 12.9, but that's a different weight category. Well, it's funny that the headphone jack was not cut out of the tablet, maybe it was postponed until the next presentation?

Change iPad to iPad Pro?

The question is eternal. Because if the price does not bother you, then there are no other reasons to ask such a question. If everything suits you in terms of the speed of work in the old device, then you do not want to switch to a new one. Of course, there is a group of users who always change last year's model to a fresh one, but there are not many such fans of technology. Which Apple tablet should you upgrade to iPad Pro 10.5? Anyone, he's perfect. Big screen, a lot of dope, excellent performance, in principle, there is nothing to complain about. Apple annually manages to improve the already high-quality things, although they say that there is no innovation, but still the company surprises with such potential.

Will the iPad Pro replace a laptop? It depends on what to do. I, as a person who writes - removes - edits, can do all this on a tablet, a matter of desire. Personally, I'm more comfortable with a laptop for the simple reason that it's inconvenient to work on an iPad without a keyboard, and buying a set of accessories turns out to be a full-fledged laptop, well, why do I need all these difficulties? But this is my opinion, and you can think differently, plunge into the world of hybrids and new sensations.

Rationally, there aren't many reasons to upgrade to Pro 10.5. The same old Air 2 is still doing well, I wonder what will happen after the transition to iOS 11, will it start to lag or not? If you use an older iPad Air or another model, then you will feel the difference: it is difficult to live with 1 or 512 MB of RAM. In addition, Apple sells a democratic “simple” iPad. Yes, it is not so cool, but it costs 2 times cheaper, and in terms of speed it is not much inferior to older devices. The case is thicker, more weight, not such a good screen, but the price tag is noticeably lower. Alternatively, you can buy last year's iPad Pro 9.7. It is officially out of production, but there are still supplies in the stores, the prices are pleasant. I won't advise iPad Pro 12.9 - it is huge by the standards of tablets, an option for amateurs. Personally, I was uncomfortable with him, I can't imagine a 100% home device, how people carry it with them in their hand.

Prices

iPad Pro 10.5 comes with 64 GB - $ 649, 46,990 rubles, 256 GB - $ 749, 53,990 rubles, 512 GB - $ 949, 67,990 rubles. If we add a slot for a SIM card, we add another 10,000 rubles to the price. If you continue to buy accessories, the Smart Keyboard will cost 11 490 rubles, the Apple Pencil 7 490 rubles, and the case for it - 2 390 rubles. A case-case will cost 9,990 rubles, a leather Smart Cover costs 5,790 rubles, and a Smart Cover - 4,090 rubles. And it's strange that so far there are no cover plates for the rear panel on sale, have they forgotten about it or what? In general, the top version of the tablet with a keyboard comes out at 90 thousand rubles.

For comparison, the MacBook 12 with the same 512 GB of memory comes out at 116,000 rubles, and the version with 256 GB - 94,990 rubles. You involuntarily wonder if such an expensive tablet is needed? Still, you won't be able to actively work on it without a keyboard. But Apple believes that it is convenient for people to do routine tasks on a tablet. What if you are that kind of person?

Opinion

In the text, I tried to convey the feelings of the new iPad Pro 10.5, combining the experience of the user of the tablet of the old generation with the feelings that arise at the sight of the most modern device. Do I like the new product? Yes, a very, excellent device, Apple has something to be proud of, but as practice shows, tablets are bought less and less often. People do not understand why to fork out for such an expensive device, especially when tablets are mainly bought for content consumption, and not for creating something. So it turns out that Apple positions devices as things to increase productivity, but in practice, for the majority, it is just an expensive toy in order to feed virtual animals on the farm or evaluate the status of Vkontakte girlfriends.

ATTENTION! All of the following procedures must be performed by professional engineers. Don't try to repeat them! You can spoil some components and completely "kill" the entire smartphone without the possibility of recovery!

Tools and preparation

To disassemble and reassemble the iPhone 6, you need the following tools:

  • plastic tweezers;
  • plastic opening tool (spatula);
  • a set of necessary screwdrivers;
  • special thin knife.

In no case are improvised tools, kitchen utensils and household tools: an ordinary knife is too thick for the tasks being performed. You only need to get into a smartphone for half a hundred thousand rubles with the right tool.

Also used by a small plastic container with several compartments in which we put the microscopic bolts. If you drop them on the floor, there is a great risk of losing them forever and not finding them even with a magnifying glass and a flashlight.

The bolts and components themselves are grouped according to the area where they come from. This significantly speeds up the subsequent assembly process.

IMPORTANT! Bolts must not be confused in places. Almost every bolt has a different length and thickness. When screwed in, it can damage the caps on the main board. And when scrolling, they cause breaks in the contact tracks.

We disassemble the iPhone 6

We put all the tools next to it, it is advisable to use an office lamp.

1. Turn off the smartphone, wait 10 seconds. Unscrew the two bottom screws. The bottom of the display should rise slightly.

2. Take the spatula and gently pry the bottom of the display. Pull up - the display clicks out of the grooves along the edges. If this does not happen, then it is necessary to pry off the frame with a thin part of the blade and lift it from the body. It is important not to rush and be sure to start from the bottom, and, on the contrary, do not pull the upper part.

3. Having released all the slots of the display, we open the iPhone like a book. Smoothly.

4. Holding the display, we begin to unscrew the screws from the upper protective shield. Five bolts in total. You need to be very careful - it is very easy to lose them. Then we pry the shield with tweezers and put it next to the unscrewed bolts. It is best to use plastic tweezers to remove all metal parts.

5. The next task is to turn off the power of the smartphone. In the lower part of the case, we find a shield smaller than the previous one and remove two screws from it.

6. There is a folded cable under the shield closer to the battery. We take a spatula and very carefully pry it from below, bending it towards the battery.

7. Return to the display module. It is connected to the main part of the smartphone with a composite ribbon cable with two connectors. With a spatula we pry on both cables again, pull upwards, disconnect them from the case.

Removing the components from the display module

Contrary to popular belief, iPhone display modules do not have built-in speakers, their own TouchID button, some important cables and a front camera. All of these components must first be removed from the old module. If it is badly broken, then some of the components will have to be ordered separately.

In our case, the upper part of the module is badly damaged - it received the main blow. This means that removing the required components will be difficult (but possible). It's even better for the sake of example.

1. On the back of the module, unscrew the 3 bolts from the bottom shield, then remove it with tweezers. The flap covers the components of the Touch ID button that we need to move.

2. ATTENTION. This is the most dangerous moment when replacing the display. Our task is to hook and disconnect the connectors of the TouchID button loop. It is very soft and incredibly thin. You will need thin tweezers, maximum care and surgical accuracy: we grope for the connection point, carefully disconnect, and then bend the cable in the opposite direction from the button. If the cable is damaged, the iPhone can be thrown away, it can no longer be restored.

3. We take out the Home button. You can't even imagine how many homebrew "repairmen" got burned at this stage. The iRepair service center receives calls from victims every day.

4. Go to the top of the module. It is necessary to disconnect the large composite cable on which the front camera is located, the speaker connection contacts and the proximity sensor. In addition, you need to get the plastic camera ring and the proximity sensor centering ring. We do everything according to the standard system: we pry on the loops, we take out the rest with tweezers. Here, some of the components are stuck on double-sided tape, therefore, when we are not dealing with a train, we use a thin stationery knife.

5. In our case, the plume is taken out with a piece of glass - they need to be peeled off very carefully. The same goes for many other elements. The glass must be completely and very carefully removed. Even a microscopic fragment - practically dust - can affect smartphone performance. For example, if it squeezes any loop during assembly, it can disable one of the functions of the device. And dust or glass that gets into the connector can break all contact.

6. Once all the components are cleaned and taken out, unscrew the bolts from the metal shield and remove it. We unhook the large loop that goes through the entire old module and start with the new one.

Transferring components to a new module

Further, the main thing is to put it as it was. The location of the connectors on the stubs leaves little room for error. The main thing is to put the metal shield not under the train of the upper part, but above it. Many are confused, as a result, thus we can cause the formation of spots on the matrix.

Once again, we pay maximum attention to the TouchID loop. In no case can it be damaged!

You will also need double-sided tape to reassemble the top module. It is necessary to cut thin strips of small size and apply them gently with tweezers.

Putting together the iPhone 6

When the module is assembled, the whole process takes 2-3 minutes. We twist the shields. We put the display cables in place, connect the lower micro-power cable. Then we test: turn on the smartphone and look at the new display. We are waiting for the download, check the touchscreen.

We fasten the module with a click to its rightful place and tighten the two external bolts. Mission accomplished!

First glance

Standard kit: tablet, Lightning cable, power adapter, waste paper. At first glance, the new iPad does not differ much from previous models, it is given out by thin bezels on the sides and an elongated (relative to the 9.7-inch model) front part.

All connectors and buttons are located in their usual places. Four speakers from 12.9- and 9.7-inch versions are also in place. It is noteworthy that, unlike the latest iPhones, Apple has left a 3.5mm headphone jack in the tablets. Like all Pro models, iPad Pro 10.5 ″ is equipped with a Smart connector for connecting accessories, primarily keyboards.

The tablet weighs the same as the previous 9.7-inch model. In general, it feels about the same, there is not much difference in ergonomics.

I have a version in gold: the front panel is white, and almost all of the back, with the exception of the bands for the cellular antenna, is painted gold. Apple hasn't radically changed the design of its tablets with the iPad Air - it's still the same thin plate of aluminum and glass. The design has caught on, but does not look outdated.

The iPad Pro 10.5 ″ case is very easily soiled on both the front and back sides

Screen

Compared to the 9.7-inch model, the display has become larger, but the dimensions remain almost the same. The screen occupies almost 80% of the front surface of the tablet, but it cannot be called frameless. It may seem so if you have a Space Gray color model, in other color schemes, where the screen has a black frame, there is no such effect.

I think that a tablet does not need to have a bezel-less screen, although this trend in smartphones is obvious, and Apple will soon introduce a new model with just such a solution. With a bezel-less screen on tablets, it is difficult to exclude accidental touches, and given the large working surface of the iPad, this is a very important point.

The screen itself is very nice. The colors are bright, saturated, the viewing angles are large, without yellowness, blueness and greenness. Pixels are not visible.

They say that the best screens are AMOLED, but with such an IPS you just don't know what to complain about.

The screen behaves well in the sun. And there is also a function of automatic adjustment to the color temperature of the environment, which works imperceptibly in the background. This is a handy and cool thing: you may not know about its existence, but the screen itself adapts to the lighting conditions.

The new iPad Pro uses Pro Motion technology on the screen. According to Apple, it provides a 120Hz refresh rate display. In practice, this means that everything works very smoothly, without jerking or tearing.

The difference is felt when flipping pages, scrolling (especially pages in Safari) and, of course, viewing photos and videos. For the latter, sound is critically important, and we'll talk about it.

Sound

As in the large 12.9-inch model, four speakers are installed here, which automatically adjust the sound depending on the position of the tablet: if you hold it vertically, the upper pairs of speakers work, if horizontally, then the lower ones.

A tablet will easily rock a small room. It's nice to watch a movie on it, listen to music too. The sound is loud enough, the quality for the speakers is excellent.

Unlike the latest iPhones, a 3.5mm jack is installed here, so you can connect your tablet to regular speakers or listen to music through your favorite headphones. I've tried regular wired JBLs and wireless AirPods - all work well.

Iron

The iPad Pro 10.5 ″ has an A10X processor. It is likely to remain the most powerful mobile device on the market in 2017. There is no doubt that this performance will last for several years: buying an iPad Pro now, you can count on 3-4 years of work without serious performance problems. This lifespan is more typical for laptops than smartphones.

The iPad Pro 10.5 ″ comes with 4GB of RAM. This helps not to reload applications in the background, quickly switch between them, and not to reload tabs in Safari.

There are models with and without LTE-module. I advise you to take the version with the module: you will be very mobile and will be able to work from almost anywhere. You can find tariff plans for tablets with unlimited Internet from Russian mobile operators, and then you will be in touch almost everywhere.

Of course, you can distribute the Internet to a tablet from a smartphone, but this is not at all the same, and besides, drain the battery of the latter faster.

Cameras

The cameras are the same as in the iPhone 7. You can shoot on the iPad, especially if you have a tripod, and even editing pictures is a pleasure. The front camera can be used for any relevant task: selfies, video calls, vlogs. It records video at 1,080p resolution. It's the same good quality as the iPhone 7.

Here are some sample photos taken from the iPad Pro 10.5 ″ camera under different conditions.

Connection

I didn't notice any problems with Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. It always connects quickly and correctly, 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies are supported. The level of cellular signal reception depends solely on the operator and the coverage area; the tablet does not interfere with the connection.

The fingerprint scanner

The iPad Pro 10.5 ″ has a Touch ID fingerprint scanner. It is built into the mechanical button - the same as before. Unlike a tablet, the latest iPhones do not have a physical button - pressing it mimics the Taptic Engine.

Software

An interesting feature of the iPad Pro 10.5 ″ is that in fact it was created for the new iOS 11 - it is she who maximizes the potential of the tablet. The release of the new version of the OS is scheduled for September, and it has many interesting features. Apple believes that with these, the iPad can replace the computer for most users.

iOS 11 is due out on September 12, but the public beta is already available and works well on the iPad Pro 10.5 ″. I'll tell you about its features, which, according to Apple, should turn the tablet into a full-fledged replacement for a laptop:

1. New Dock. It accommodates more applications than before. In addition, the system offers three of the most commonly used programs. The Dock is always accessible by swiping from the bottom of the screen.

2. New multitasking window. IOS 11 introduces a new switching between apps screen, which also integrates a new Control Center with widgets for quick settings.

New Dock, Control Center and Multitasking Screen

3. Opening applications over windows. On top of the two already open applications that split the screen in half, you can add another window with the program.

4. Drag-n-drop. My all-time favorite feature: it helps you copy and paste text fragments, pictures and links between applications using simple drag and drop.

5. Quick Notes for Apple Pencil. In iOS 11, you can create quick notes by simply touching the tip of the stylus to the screen, and take quick sketches in Mail, Notes, and other applications.

6. Updated keyboard QuickType. By swiping down the keys, you can quickly insert some characters.

Memory

iPad Pro 10.5 ″ is available with three storage options: 64, 256 and 512 GB. I would not recommend going with the 64GB model: considering how much apps, games, music, photos and videos take up, that storage will quickly run out.

The best option is 256 GB. Here, the vast majority have enough room for both apps and content. 512 GB is a great option if you are going to use the tablet as your only work tool, work on it with all your files.

Battery survivability

The iPad Pro 10.5 ″ has a 8134 mAh lithium polymer battery. Together with iOS, this gives 8-9 hours of work. The best results can be achieved by not using a cellular connection, lowering the screen brightness, and using the tablet only for viewing content.

But even 8-9 hours is an excellent result. This will be enough for a full day with a tablet, and by the evening will be left to watch a movie or two episodes of your favorite TV series.

Accessories

Increasing the screen to 10.5 inches and slightly increasing the height of the tablet allowed for a keyboard that can accommodate all the buttons. This prevents your fingers from piling up when you work behind it.

I don’t have the largest hands and fingers, so it’s quite possible that people with larger palms will have problems. Consider this and before buying, check whether it is convenient for you to type on such a keyboard.

The travel of the buttons is small, but distinct. Typing speed on a tablet is 80–85% of typing on a laptop.

Smart Keyboard replaces cover and stand

Many built-in and third-party applications support hotkeys, which is convenient. Some work at the system level: for example, you can quickly turn on search and return to the home screen.

Using a keyboard reduces the need to constantly poke at the screen, but does not eliminate it entirely. Some things, such as highlighting fragments of text, are more convenient to do on the screen than on the keyboard.

I would advise buying a keyboard for those whose work is related to writing large texts. If the most you write is a short note or post on Facebook, then use the software keyboard, that's enough.

Apple Pencil

At first I wanted to buy an Apple Pencil, but then I realized that I have practically no scripts when I need it. Yes, sometimes it is more convenient to use it to make some notes and sign documents, but I rarely do this and an ordinary finger and Multi-touch is enough.

I am not an artist, designer or illustrator. The most I do is edit photos in VSCO or Snapseed. If your work is not related to drawing, then I do not recommend taking a stylus.

Can iPad Pro replace a computer

I have been using iPad Pro for a month and a half, and here are the tasks in which it replaced my laptop:

1. Correspondence and calls. There are no problems here, all applications for instant messengers (Telegram, Facebook Messenger, Viber), e-mail (Mail, Spark, myMail, Outlook, AirMail) and calls (Skype, Zoom.us, Google Hangouts) are there. If your job is all about correspondence and negotiations, then the iPad Pro is for you.

3. Uncomplicated photo and video processing. There is no Final Cut Pro here, of course, but there are iMovie and other good video editors to help you make a normal video and put it on the Web. For personal video blogs and simple videos for social networks - just right.

4. Creation of sketches, drawings and sketches. The iPad Pro has some cool artist apps like Procreate, Adobe Sketch, and more. They allow you to create drawings and sketches.

5. Writing draft articles. I use the Ulysses and Notes apps to create a basic content and article. For example, at Ulysses I wrote a draft of this review and then transferred it to Google Docs.

6. Create simple documents, spreadsheets and presentations. There are several office suites for creating and editing documents, tables and on the iPad: iWork (Pages, Keynote, Numbers), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google (“Docs”, “Sheets”). For example, I made two presentations for my talks right on the tablet using Keynote.

The functionality of these applications does not reach desktop clients, but it is enough to write a simple document, edit a spreadsheet and make a presentation.

7. Creation of outlines and mind maps. The large iPad Pro display makes it easy to structure information. I use OmniOutliner 2 when I want to break down an idea point by point and MindNode to do it.

In OmniOutline 2, I keep a list of books I have read.

The iPad Pro can replace a computer in many ways. It is suitable for people who communicate a lot with colleagues and partners at work and for whom it is important to show something on the tablet screen: presentations, sketches, drawings, drafts.

Also, iPad Pro will become an assistant for a wide range of professionals: editors, designers, editors, illustrators, photographers, bloggers. A tablet will not replace a laptop or computer with a full-fledged operating system, but it will be a good help: you can do rough work on the tablet, and finally finish it on the computer.

The potential to replace laptops with a tablet rests solely on applications. The tablet itself and the operating system allow you to use it for work. Of course, you can always launch Safari and use the web versions of the services, but that's not quite the case.

If you are considering the iPad as a replacement for a laptop, then write down all the work scenarios in which you need it, and see if there are applications for them. If yes - then feel free to take it, if not - wait a little.

Believing in the future is, of course, good, but if you need a working tool here and now, then carefully study if the iPad has the programs you need.

Another huge plus of the iPad Pro is that it is very compact and increases your portability. Let's just say that MacBooks are far from the most bulky devices, but the iPad Pro 10.5 ″ with a keyboard is lighter than any of them (even the MacBook 12 ″). You might think that 300-400 grams does not solve, but believe me, when you carry a laptop with you every day, the difference is felt.

In addition, iPad Pro with a keyboard can be easily laid out on a table in an Aeroexpress train or on an airplane. If you wish, you can work with the tablet on your knees, but then you should have a comfortable support so that your back does not hurt or get numb.

While driving to the airport, I sketched a draft of the text

If you have a cellular module, then you can solve urgent small tasks at any time: fix something, call, send a letter to someone. In this regard, the laptop is not so mobile, it still needs Wi-Fi.

The iPad Pro 10.5 ″ itself is very light and feels weightless for its size. If you value portability, then you will love this model.

No weak points?

I've been using Apple technology for seven years now, and it's hard to surprise me with anything. But the iPad Pro succeeded. I haven't used such a solid device for a long time without weaknesses in all components: there are things that work better somewhere, but there is not a single Achilles heel.

With all that stuff in it, it's a perfect tablet. It cannot be said that it will definitely replace a laptop or computer for work: everything is too individual and depends on the tasks and applications that you need. If you have the appropriate tools for your work tasks, then you can bet on the iPad Pro - you will love it.

What is missing

1. 3D Touch. It's scary to imagine how the user experience would be transformed with this thing. It would replace the right click when using the application and would simplify a lot of things.

2. Moisture protection. To work with iPad by the pond without fear of dropping the tablet into the water.

3. Taptic Engine. It would be great to use it for responsive typing with a built-in soft keyboard.

Let me remind you that True Tone technology automatically adjusts the white balance on the display screen depending on ambient lighting conditions. This is realized due to additional on-screen sensors.

For me, the main feature of True Tone turned out not so much in the naturalness of white in different ambient lighting (although this is also cool), as in the comfort for the eyes. They really strain much less, which I felt especially acutely on the first day of working with the tablet, constantly comparing it with the 12.9-inch brother of the first generation.

The picture looks very natural, the colors are soft, pleasant and at the same time more saturated (for which the extended color range is worth thanks).

In general, the effect of reducing eye strain is easy to explain. In the light of a candle, a white sheet of paper will be orange-yellow in color, under a bright fluorescent lamp - white, in the sun - yellow. All this is familiar and natural for our brain and for our eyes.

And when an electronic display, in any ambient light conditions, hits the eyes with the same color, it strains them.

Wide color display(DCI-P3) is also a good thing, which I have already got used to on and. I used to work with a laptop, then switched to iPad and noticed slightly faded colors. The same goes for switching from phone to tablet.

Now there is no such resonance. But there is another. Called ProMotion.

This is a new technology for tablets, at first actively exploited only in gaming monitors and TVs. The screen refresh rate has been increased from 60 Hz to 120 Hz. In reality, these numbers mean that the interface has become even smoother.

What is smoother there, it's as if window to another world... Scrolling the desktop, pages in Safari, tweets in Tweetbot - any activity in the iOS interface looks mesmerizing at 120 Hz.

This is one of the features for which it makes sense to change your tablet. It seems to be a trifle, but once you try it, there is no way back. Now I want to see such a thing in the iPhone and MacBook.

It would seem that people are outraged, they say, Apple has no innovations, but look at what cool things Samsung is doing! Well, the Korean company has built a curved display into smartphones - in terms of design, it's cool, in terms of operating experience, only after a few generations did the designers find a comfortable bend so that they did not interfere with work and did not steal the screen space. Yes, yes, I am.

In display technologies, the Koreans, but only as innovators in the field of OLED, namely, from year to year they increase the brightness, and a little shaman with the vigor of colors.

Excellent displays, I will not be honest here, but what kind of "live" technologies are there in addition to high brightness, which allows you to work comfortably even in daylight? None.

At the same time, the latest Apple devices also have high brightness, which is very noticeable in the example of the same iPad 10.5 - I already managed to work with it on the street and sitting by the window on a bus in daylight. 600 nits rule. But plus also True Tone, as well as ProMotion. I am sure that the latest technology will become a trend that, again, launched into the world of Apple.

So don't talk about Apple's lack of innovation. They are, moreover, living, workers, those who make life and work more comfortable.

And I haven't mentioned the Touch Bar yet. Oldfags continue to find fault with this innovation, but it all depends on the scheme of using the device. I still love and enjoy using the touch bar in my MacBook.

All in all, the array of display technologies that come together in the iPad 10.5 (and the new 12.9-inch too) makes the device very comfortable to use in everyday use and is well worth the upgrade, even if your current tablet is still awful. zinger.

By the way, the contrast of the novelty is also higher than that of the first generation iPad Pro 12.9. Black in the dark is practically not highlighted.

The sound is even slightly improved

In 2015, the iPad Pro 12.9 impressed with the quality of the built-in acoustics, and the four emitters with dynamically changing stereo effect depending on the screen orientation turned out to be an interesting feature too.

Then I heard how the 9.7-inch iPad Pro sounds - noticeably better than the iPad Air 2, plus stereo, but not as spacious and bass as its older brother. In principle, I was ready for some rollback in the quality of the built-in acoustics when switching to iPad 10.5 from iPad Pro 12.9, but to my surprise, this did not happen.

In terms of bass quality, the devices are comparable, in terms of volume - a little bit louder, a little better and clearer, medium and high, but a little less volume in the sound. In general, the acoustics quality of the devices is comparable, unequivocally winning this round over the iPad Pro 9.7 with its flatter and screaming sound.

Apple is one of the few companies that pays attention to the quality of speakers in portable devices - laptops, smartphones, tablets. It seems to be a trifle, but in reality it turns out to be a very important factor for the usability of the device.

So, I love to work with music and now I don't have to bother with external portable speakers. Built-in acoustics in laptop and tablet completely replace even expensive models from Bose or Beats. Watching videos, playing games - everywhere good sound decides.

To that you get used to it quickly and you don't notice, but it is worth picking up any alternative, including the technically very cool Galaxy Tab S3, as you know - there are working, "living innovations" and chips, but there are beautiful technical characteristics "on paper".

The keyboard is slightly more compact

I really like working for, and I feel even more comfortable tactilely than the second generation Butterfly in the new MacBook Pro and MacBook 12 (2017). Naturally, the iPad 10.5 was ordered immediately complete with this accessory, a little worried about the size of the keys.

I was worried in vain, since the slightly more compact dimensions of the buttons do not bother at all, and I quickly got used to the two reduced keys in the second row on the right, especially since I do not use them often (one of them is only for arranging Christmas tree brackets).

Tactilely, the keyboard is exactly the same, there is a distinct click, it feels like something in between a butterfly and a traditional scissor mechanism. The coating also remained unchanged and, as practice has shown, it is very wear-resistant and perfectly cleaned of dirt and grease.

Please note that the keyboard is engraved, which, in principle, I do not need, since I use it. The trick is that only engraved options were available in my region. They say that just the accessories are delivered to wholesalers and immediately sent for revision. Fortunately, Russian and Ukrainian letters are darker than English ones and do not spoil the appearance especially.

Buttons and other protruding things

The tablet has acquired a second generation Touch ID scanner, which is noticeably faster than its predecessor in the iPad 12.9 in 2015. The only pity is that the button is mechanical. I like the monolithic surface with a cool vibro on the iPhone 7 Plus.

But the gadget is clearly too big to fully implement the Taptic Engine with the currently available technical means.

By the way, the tactile Home button is exactly the same as in my previous tablet, and the power and volume buttons are different in the new product for the better. The click is harder and clearer.

I don’t know if this is due to my copy or if new "mikriki" are used, but I noticed such a feature in my iPhone 7 Plus in comparison with the previous iPhone 6s Plus.

As for the other speakers, I would like to express both delight and bewilderment in this regard. Yes, yes - I'm about main 12MP camera... Moreover, the fact that it sticks out noticeably does not bother me at all, as it never did in the iPhone.

The lack of a flashlight in the control room causes confusion! There is a flash, but no flashlight. It may be funny to someone, but this thing often helps me out in the late evenings, when in the dark you make your way through the apartment to the bed and, of course, don't turn on the light so as not to wake up your spouse.

Now, instead of an iPhone, I carry an iPad with me to bed (to read before bed - I always read literary works before going to bed, which helps in my work, plus an alarm clock) and there is not enough flashlight. Rather, the tablet has it in hardware, but it has not yet been added to iOS.

The camera itself is beautiful and the best tablet module on the market. After all, in fact, Apple has built a camera from the iPhone 7 with optical stabilization and other goodies.

I rarely use a photomodule in my tablet, but the fact that it is really cool and, if necessary, will allow you to make cool photos, warms my soul.

By the way, it is convenient for those who take notes of lectures when it is necessary to photograph slides. In conjunction with the iPad 12.9, I used the iPhone, then I added photos to the notes in iNotes on the phone, and they appeared on the tablet within a few seconds.

But when you do all this with one device, it is still more convenient and you do not need Internet access.

The 7-megapixel front camera (versus the 1.2-megapixel one in its predecessor) is also not superfluous for FaceTime, Skype and other instant messengers with video support, which I use more and more often due to the peculiarities of one of the types of my activity.

Apple Pencil and branded case

The proprietary stylus was interested in a year and a half ago, when the original iPad Pro 12.9 was announced. At first I was intrigued purely as a new, unique gadget, judging by the press reviews. But I'm not an artist myself, and I couldn't think of any other activities with Apple Pencil for myself.

What has changed since then?

On the one hand, I didn't draw better. On the other hand, I felt an urgent need for a stylus for taking notes of lectures, when it was necessary to urgently draw a diagram, a graph or some other illustration. It turned out to be absolutely impossible to do this with a finger.

I partially solved the problem by drawing on paper with a pen, photographing the drawing and inserting it into Notes, but carrying the office with you somehow is not comme il faut.

There are lovers of notebooks, pencils and paper books, but this is definitely not about me. Moved to e-books back in the days Nokia 6670- yes, yes, I read more than a dozen books from the little screen of this Symbian smartphone, but when I got the legendary Sony Reader PRS-505, then the joy knew no bounds.

As for electronic notebooks, in the past I actively used Evernote and partly Apple Notes. When the latter learned to work with folders, he completely switched to him. Therefore, the stylus fits perfectly into my gadget-manic interests - Notes works great with it.

Another bizarre reason that prompted the purchase of the Apple Pencil is the branded leather case for the iPad Pro with a built-in stylus holder. I am a perfectionist and love when accessories fit perfectly together and can be carried comfortably with you.

This is one of the reasons why Apple Smart Keyboard is the best companion for iPad. The leather folder contains not just a holder, but a full-fledged built-in Pencil case with a padded interior and a retainer.

And the very format of the accessory - a leather pocket - I really like. For the iPhone, I have been using a similar one for the third year now - and I will only change it with the transition to the iPhone 8 due to the different dimensions of the smartphone.

I have a black version of the cover. The leather is soft and firm, but to the touch it does not look like natural leather, to be honest. There is no such tactile delight as, for example, from accessories. Absolutely odorless and virtually no texture - I guess it's eco leather. In fact, I have nothing against it, especially since the tablet, together with the keyboard, sits perfectly inside.

Without a keyboard, by the way, too, but if you initially carry a gadget inside with a fastened Smart Keyboard, then the case stretches a little and then the iPad will sit quite freely separately. Apple Pencil also locks into place perfectly and is easy to remove.
