The design of HTC U11 on modern standards looks rather strange. While the manufacturers are increasingly drawn to the practical matte metal, reliable and naigant, Taiwanese suddenly produce a brilliant, transfusion in the sunshine with all the colors of the rainbow, the maximum marked glass smartphone with an absolutely mirrored back cover.

Naturally, it is beautifully painted: they say, the rear panel glass effectively refracts the light rays due to the mineral particles embedded into the coating, which are at different depths and have different characteristics of light-rates. In the dimensions, the smartphone was not so elegant: the screen is large, the body is rather thick, douty and rounded, the device does not look and does not feel flat and easy. But the main problem is slippery glass panels that completely cover the corpus from the front and rear, while the thin strip on the sides form a convex aluminum frame of the rounded form. Thanks to all this, the smartphone turned out to be very marked and slippery, the protective cover here is simply necessary.

HTC U11 is certified according to the IP67 standard and is protected from dust, splashes and water when immersed to a depth of 1 m in fresh water for a while up to 30 minutes, which is confirmed by the test in the laboratory conditions. At the same time, the manufacturer warns that everyday exploitation and wear can reduce the level of protection against splashes and water over time. It turns out that the auto-adjustment function of brightness works adequately and to some extent allows the user to customize its work under individual requirements. At any level of brightness, there is no significant illumination modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

The screen has good viewing angles without a significant shift of colors, even with large looks from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, we give the photos on which the same images are displayed on the HTC U11 and Nexus 7 screens, while the brightness of the screens is initially installed by about 200 cd / m², and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K.

In this device there is some kind of dynamic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight in accordance with the character of the displayed image. As a result, the obtained dependence of brightness from the shade (gamma curve) may not correspond to the gamma-curve of the static image, since the measurements were carried out with a consistent output of shades of gray almost full screen. For this reason, a series of tests - determination of contrast and response time, comparing the illumination of black at angles - we were carried out (however, as always) when the special templates are withdrawn with the constant medium brightness, and not one-photo fields in full screen. It should be noted that in this case the brightness correction is expressed weakly and has no obvious dependence on the image, but it would be better not at all.

We have already seen this in the case of, for example, Sony Xperia Z2 and other mobile devices. Sony points out that these screens use LEDs with a blue emitter and green and red phosphor (usually a blue emitter and yellow phosphor), which in combination with special matrix light filters and allows you to get a wide color coverage. Yes, and in the Red Luminofore, apparently, the so-called quantum dots are used. For a consumer device, a wide color coverage is in no advantage, but a significant disadvantage, since as a result of the colors of images - drawings, photos and films, - srgb-oriented space (and such an overwhelming majority), have unnatural saturation. This is especially noticeable on recognizable shades, for example on skin shades. The result is shown in the photo above.

The balance of shades on the gray medium scale, as the color temperature is noticeably higher than the standard 6500 K, but at least deviation from the spectrum of absolutely black body (ΔE) below 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for the consumer device. In this case, the color temperature and Δe varies significantly from the shade to the shade - this adversely affects the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can not be considered, since there the balance of colors does not matter, and the measurement error of the color characteristics on the low brightness is large.)

In complete darkness, brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. It is permissible to use the mode with an automatic adjustment of the brightness that works adequately. Also, the dignity of the screen needs to include an effective oleophobic coating, no air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker, high contrast and good uniformity of the black field. The disadvantages are the low stability of black to the rejection of the view from the perpendicular to the screen plane and overly wide color coverage. However, taking into account the importance of the characteristics for this class of devices, the screen quality can be considered high, although it is worth getting ready for strange and not entirely natural shades in films and in photos.

Camera

The frontal 16-megapixel camera with a reverse illumination sensor (BSI) and a lens with a diaphragm F / 2.0 did not receive any of the outbreak, no autofocus. Honestly, a higher quality shooting was expected from such a camera. The color rendition is clearly lame, sharpness is good only in the center of the frame, on the field it drops sharply, and with it it falls and detailing. Everything else, the narrowness of the dynamic range of the matrix, even in good light conditions, sometimes leads to completely grooved areas (shirt collar on the example below). In general, the camera was not impressed.

The main chamber uses a 12-megapixel BSI sensor with a pixel size of 1.4 μm, as well as a light lens with a diaphragm F / 1.7, has an optical stabilization system and a quick autofocus. There are no complaints about the sound records: the four omnidirectional microphones with acoustic focus technology provide 3D Audio spatial sound recording. The sound is clean, loud, the noise cancellation system copes with its tasks.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 is the flagship platform of the manufacturer with top characteristics, one of the most powerful mobile platforms in the world at the moment. It is much more powerful than its predecessor of Snapdragon 821 and is noticeably ahead of all indicators of the flagship solution Huawei - Hisilicon Kirin 960. In the MediaTek portfolio there is no equal to it. Only the topical SAMSUNG EXYNOS 8895 platform can be compared with it, which operates the latest Korean flagships Galaxy S8 and S8 +.

In real scenarios of use for this SOC there are no obstacles, it confidently copes with anyone without exception to the tasks set in front of it. As previously said, I used HTC U Play for a long time. The background was written in order to bring to the main thought of the design of HTC U11: smartphones U11 and U Play in this plan are very similar, and the experience of using almost the same. Memory

The focus of the HTC U11 camera is very fast, but only manual focus and digital approximation helps to focus on complex macro objects.

The stabilization of the video is good, but on S8 + it is even more stable. The picture is more pleasant to HTC U11, because it is better coping with the connecting light, less contrast and a little wider than DD.

There are completely manual settings: ISO (from 100 to 800), shutter speed (from 32 to 1/8000 seconds), focus from 80 mm. Something in which the HTC quotes Apple: the sound is transmitted in this smartphone exclusively through the USB port of Type-c. The appropriate headphone adapter with a standard 3.5 mm plug is included in the delivery. At the same time, the manufacturer accompanies the smartphone with a good headset with active noise reduction, which connects to the USB Type-C connector. With initial use, the set of deposit headphones did not please the listeners with their ultrasound, the sound must be optimized.

In addition, it turned out that the active noise reduction system works only in the process of playing music, while many other headphones with "noise" can be used even in order to simply isolate from external stimuli and work in silence. Despite this, the fact that the company HTC includes such a cool headset, the praise still deserves.

The size of the RAM is 4 GB here, the nominal 64 GB of the built-in memory can be extended using a microSD card. Alternatively, buyers of the device not tied to a specific brand of mobile operator can use the second SIM card. By the way, the smartphone will be available in Asia in the version with 6 GB of RAM and the built-in 128 GB container.

The battery capacity equals 3000 mAh - it is in this level with Galaxy S8. However, HTC U11 works a little longer than the usual S8, and in online testing, it withstands good 10 hours 14 minutes - but it still has a slightly smaller screen. Included in the delivery kit there is a "fast" charger with a power of 15 W, with which you can fully charge the smartphone a little less than two hours.

In this comparison, we are interested in the confrontation and Galaxy S8, whose cameras have more outstanding characteristics than Xperia XZ1. It is believed that S8 and U11 are among the best cameras in 2017. And in early 2018, few people can argue with them, except for Google Pixel 2.

Sony Xperia XZ1 is needed in this comparison in order to show how much (or vice versa) is inferior to the best mobile camera Sony to the main competitors. Nevertheless, it is stupid to deny that Xperia XZ1 is the best camera phone in the market, but it is able to surprise something.

Galaxy Galaxy S8 and HTC U11 cameras each pixel matrix has a size of 1.4 μm, and Xperia XZ1 has only 1.22 microns. As you know, the more each pixel on the matrix, the more he is a photosensitive. Roughly speaking, more pixel \u003d more dynamic range and less need to raise ISO when shooting at night.

However, it should be borne here that Sony Xperia XZ1 takes off in a resolution of 19 MP, and Samsung Galaxy S8 and HTC U11 is only 12 megapixel. Even before the comparison, I was confident that the Galaxy S8 and HTC U11 would be almost equal on the photo form. So it turned out if not to take into account that S8 likes to scold the picture for sharpness and overstate the color saturation, and the HTC U11, on the contrary, tries to always make a frame as natural as possible in colors and exposure, sometimes even dim.

Sometimes it annoys, but with the photos U11 it is much easier to work in Snapseed or VSco than C Galaxy S8. Excessive sharpness and saturation in many scenes may interfere with editing.

The Xperia XZ1 results were noticeably more modest than in U11 and S8. If the day scenes at Sony were obtained at the level with Samsung and HTC, then night pictures are quite weak. Lack of stabilization and a darker lens do not give Xperia XZ1 to compete with Galaxy S8 and HTC U11 on equal.

Snapshots in good lighting conditions have quite decent quality, but when the lights lack the sharpness of the image drops, although extra noises are filtered quite well.

The main 12.2-megapixel chamber has a diaphragm F / 1.7. The dimensions of the individual pixel are 1.40 microns (HTC Ultra Pixel 3). According to technical specifications, the camera is comparable to that in Google Pixel XL. or . The predecessor (HTC 10) pixels were larger (1.55 microns), which can be considered a sign of greater photosensitivity - but the smartphone did not realize his potential, despite the good characteristics. But HTC U11 made a huge step in this direction. In daylight, the test smartphone makes unmatched pictures. Even HDR works well, without artifacts, like halois around objects, like S8 + (see scene 1). Compared to LG G6, the sharpness of the image is a little worse. The second scene describes well the dynamic range, which is very good in comparison with competitors, but in general the brightness of the colors suffered a little. One of the biggest advantages over the previous model is the capabilities of the camera with insufficient lighting. In principle, U11 wins all rivals in this competition: let his pictures are not the brightest, but they exceed the atmosphere of the captured moment, since they do not have "ladies" and other distortions around objects in the image, and the noise is in an acceptable limits. Switching to professional mode, you can save a photo in RAW format.

Video recording in U11 is possible in Ultra HD resolution (4K, 3840x2160, 30 k / s). Unfortunately, the video in Full HD resolution is also recorded at 30 k / s. The sound quality on the video is great, regardless of the mode, four microphones are installed in the smartphone with which it is possible to record the surround sound. Timelaps video are limited by resolution and time (720p, 45 minutes); It is possible to shoot a slow video, which is written in Full HD at 60 k / s, but the playback is still possible only at 30 k / s. The HTC U11 chamber is as sensitive to the light and when shooting a video, but with poor lighting a noticeable noise appears. In addition, the video stabilization is not always able to compensate for a random movement.

HTC managed not to reveal errors with the camera in the new U11. For sensations, there are not enough additional video recording settings, as well as the reason why the maximum resolution is limited in various modes. Also a little disappointing the fact that since the HTC 10, the camera application has not changed in any way, there are no familiar modern functions in it. Nevertheless, HTC U11 is an excellent option for those who are interested in photography.
