Rulers, guides and a grid in Photoshop. Photoshop Basics: Using Grid in Photoshop How to Make a Grid in Photoshop CS6

There is a tool with which it will be much easier to edit graphics. This is the grid. It helps with image creation and collage folding. Using it, you can estimate the size and distance, estimate how the objects will be located relative to each other, and make markings. Find out where to place this or that part of the picture. It is a useful tool if you know how to use it. Learn how to enable a grid in Photoshop, how to adjust its attributes, and how to remove it.

The grid helps you arrange elements in a composition more precisely and symmetrically

They are essentially guide lines. Smooth table. It overlaps the image, but does not overlap it. It makes it easier to calculate proportions, see symmetry, and place individual elements correctly.

As an analogy, let's take a school notebook in a cage. In it, they built graphs and drew geometric shapes. On such a sheet, you could draw a straight line segment without a ruler, set an angle of 45 or 90 degrees, without using a protractor. It was used to determine by eye how long the side of the rectangle is, and how many cells make up its area. In Photoshop, the table has about the same functions.

It can only be seen in the program. It will not be displayed when printing. In the digital version, there will be no cell pattern either. It is not part of the image, but an editing tool.

Don't confuse it with the pixel grid. The last one is splitting the picture into dots. Useful for detailed editing. It can also be enabled and configured.

Even if you don't need these options, it is still useful to know about them. For example, to remove a table if it was accidentally activated.

How to turn on?

  1. Open any graphic file or create a new one.
  2. On the menu bar, click on the "View" button. It usually sits between 3D and Window.
  3. Move the cursor over the item "Show".
  4. In the drop-down menu, click on "Grid". It will appear on the layer.
  5. You can also press Ctrl + ’(in the Russian layout, Ctrl + E).

How to setup?

You can make a different size of the cells (for example, so that they visually indicate segments of 1 centimeter long), select the type or color of the lines.

  1. Open the Edit menu on the top bar.
  2. Hover the mouse over the "Preferences" item. He's at the very bottom of the list.
  3. Click on Guides, Grid & Slices.
  4. In the window that opens, set the desired cell size. This can be done in the "Line every ..." field. Different units of measurement are available: inches, millimeters, points, and so on.
  5. In the Style section, specify how you want the grid to be displayed: solid stripes, dashed lines, or dots. This is not so important, since the markup will only be visible when editing the picture.
  6. In the "Color" item, select a fill. The setting can be used when the table is merged into the background.

How to remove?

You can get rid of cells in the same menu through which they were added. Here's how to remove the grid in Photoshop:

  1. Go to View - Show.
  2. Uncheck the corresponding item.
  3. Or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + E.

Pixel grid

The pixel grid is visible only up close. To see it, you need to enlarge the picture and change the scale. But when working with graphics, it can get in the way. Here's how to insert or remove it:

  1. Open the View - Show menu.
  2. Click on "Pixel Grid".

Rulers

Another measurement method in Photoshop is rulers. They are outside the drawing. With this tool, you can estimate the length and width of objects and images in general. You can activate the rulers in the View menu. To select their parameters, go to Edit - Preferences - Units and Rulers.

The table is useful for drawing diagrams. Or for any other job that requires precision. But this tool is also useful outside the professional field. After all, while drawing, a lot of things "pretend to be by sight." If you enable markup, you can target it. And as a result, you will get a verified, elaborated and beautiful drawing.

If you make a mistake, you can always use the "History" function.

There are many techniques for artistic photography that allow you to get unusual visual effects... One of them is “fish eye". It is achieved by using a wide-angle lens at short focal lengths. Therefore, it cannot be reproduced on amateur cameras. However, to make the effect "fishy eye»Can be in the editor Adobe Photoshop from a regular photo.

You will need

  • - Photoshop;
  • - image file.

Instructions

Open the original image in Adobe Photoshop by choosing "Open ..." from the File menu. Use the text box at the bottom of the document window or the Zoom Tool to set the appropriate viewing scale. It should allow manipulation of the entire area of the image intended for processing.

Create a main layer from the background. In the main menu, select the items Layer, New, "Layer From Background ...". Click on the OK button in the appearing Layer dialog.

Select the area of the image to which you want to apply the fisheye effect. eye". Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool or the Elliptical Marquee Tool. If the entire image needs to be processed, skip this step.

Activate the image processing mode by introducing distortion. From the menu, select Edit, Transform and Warp in sequence. After that, a grid will appear in the document window to control the effect parameters.

Change the applied distortion type to fisheye. eye". Click on the Warp drop-down list located in the top toolbar. Select the Fisheye element. The control grid in the document window will change its appearance (only one marker will remain).

Apply the Fisheye effect. eye»To the processed image. Move the control grid marker with the mouse until the required distortion level is reached.

If you need to make additional changes to the image, for example, to give the distortion area a rounded shape, select the Custom item in the Warp list. Move the nodes of the mesh to get the desired effect. Apply the changes by clicking on any button on the toolbar and clicking OK in the dialog that appears.

If necessary, tweak the image with the added “fishy” effect. eye a". For example, invert the current selection by pressing Ctrl + I, clear the background by pressing Del, and then fill it with the desired color using the Paint Bucket Tool. Crop with the Crop Tool.

Save the result of your work to a file. Use the "Save As ..." or "Save for Web & Devices ..." item in the File section of the main menu. When saving, pay special attention to the choice of the data format and compression rate. If you intend to work with the image, save a copy of it in PSD format.

Professional bitmap editors such as Adobe Photoshop provide the most powerful tools for modifying photos today. The created effects go beyond the usual reality. For example, in photoshop can be done fangs, presenting the character of the photographic composition in the form of a vampire.

The grid is a convenient tool that allows you to easily and quickly track the changes taking place in the image with which you are working in a graphic editor. In this article, you will learn how to create a grid in Photoshop for any image, so that it shows even the slightest distortion in your work.

You will need

  • Adobe photoshop

Instructions

1. To create a mesh, go to the View Options section and select Show Mesh in the view settings. Please indicate the size you want as well as the color. After confirming the command, a grid with the specified parameters will appear on your open image.

2. The net, if necessary, is allowed to be saved. To do this, click "Save Grid" or "Load Grid" if you need to open the existing one more closely.

3. The mesh can be of great help in reconstructing the image after some operations were performed on it and it turned out to be distorted. Open the tool "Reconstruct", it will allow you to undo the metamorphosis, restore the original appearance of the image, or, on the contrary, apply distortion to other objects. In addition, the Liquify section can distort an object. The mesh will allow you to track metamorphoses and distortions in any made object, and you can also save the mesh with the shape of the transformed object at any time, so that later you can apply it to it. Correctly, you can also save the mesh for a typical undistorted object in order to restore its parameters later on unsuccessful actions.

4. The grid will be your indispensable assistant if you are working with fuzzy images in which it is difficult to capture certain boundaries. It will allow you to more correctly notice the zones of certain changes. In addition, if you uncheck the "Show image" checkbox in the grid settings, you will be able to see the distortions on the grid in its purest form.

This lesson will give you an idea of how you can make a custom-designed calendar in Photoshop. We will not go deep into the details of making collages, but only describe the main stages of work. So let's get started.

You will need

  • a computer;
  • photoshop any version;
  • fantasy.

Instructions

1. For the calendar, we need a grid, which can be downloaded on the Internet upon request. Then open the newest document by pressing Ctrl + N. In the "Set" section, we will prefer A4 paper with a white background color.

2. On the document, call the "Ruler" (Ctrl + R) and mark the lines. We will be guided by them, placing images, and at the end of our work along these lines it will be easy for us to bend a sheet of paper in order to get a calendar. Go to "View" -> "New Guide" and select the option "Orientation" -> "Horizontal" in the new window. We enter 50% in the "Location" and confirm.

3. Now let's make a new guide 9 cm from the first one. Take the Ruler tool and uncheck the Apply Measurement Scale checkbox. Drag the line down from the guide, align it, getting rid of the kinks. Then hold down Ctrl and extend it to the edge of the stretched line with the support of the Ruler tool. We do the same in the opposite direction from the center line.

4. Let's make two pictures, one on either side of our calendar. Using the "Free Transform", pressing Ctrl + T, place the pattern on the document, then apply the "Rectangular Region" and select a place for the picture. Invert the selection (Ctrl + I) and hit Del. The layer can be slightly tweaked by applying a blur to it.

5. Take the second picture and place it on the other side of the document. If necessary, use "Free Transform" to reflect or reduce the image.

6. It is now allowed to arrange the calendar grid. So that it is not too shallow for reading, we will place six months on one side, and the other half on the 2nd. With the help of the "Text" tool, we type the year. Immediately it is allowed to increase the font, change the opacity or color, change the location. We make a frame around the edges for beauty.

7. Go to the second side, rotate the canvas 90o clockwise 2 times. Just do not reflect it vertically, on the contrary, we will get a mirror image. We do the same with the grid: we place the second image, the text and the grid, and we design beautifully.

8. In the end, it is allowed to hide the guides and start printing. For printing, select A4 format and put a tick on the "True size" checkbox. This is very important. If we do not check the box, we may not fit the calendar on A4 sheet. It's all.

Note!
Be careful not to work on the Background layer, because some of the metamorphosis on it may be irreversible. It is invariably better to insure yourself with a new layer.

Helpful advice
If you make a mistake, you are invariably allowed to use the “History” function.

There are tons of artistic photography techniques out there that allow for weird visuals. effects... One of them is “fish eye". It is achieved by using a wide-angle lens at short focal lengths. Consequently, it cannot be reproduced on amateur cameras. However, to make the result "fishy eye»Allowed in the editor Adobe Photoshop from an ordinary photo.

Instructions

1. Open the starter image in Adobe Photoshop, choosing “Open…” from the File menu. Using the text box located at the bottom of the document window, or the Zoom Tool, set the appropriate viewing scale. He must allow to make manipulations with each area of the image, prepared for processing.

2. Make a core layer from the background. In the main menu, select the items Layer, New, “Layer From Background ...”. Click on the OK button in the appearing Layer dialog.

3. Select the area of the image to which you want to apply the fisheye effect. eye". Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool or the Elliptical Marquee Tool. If the entire image needs to be processed, skip this step.

4. Activate the image processing mode by introducing distortion. In the menu stepwise select the items Edit, Transform and Warp. Later, a grid will be displayed in the document window to control the parameters of the result.

5. Change the applied distortion type to fisheye. eye". Click on the Warp drop-down list located in the top toolbar. Select the Fisheye element. The control grid in the document window will change its appearance (only one marker will remain).

6. Apply a fisheye result eye»To the processed image. Move the control grid marker with the mouse until the desired level of distortion is reached.

7. If you need to add additional metamorphoses to the image, for example, to give the distortion area a rounded shape, select the Custom item in the Warp list. Move the nodes of the grid to get the desired result. Apply the introduced metamorphoses by clicking on any button on the toolbar and clicking OK in the dialog that appears.

8. If necessary, modify the image with the result of the "fish eye a". Let's say invert the current selection by pressing Ctrl + I, clear the background by pressing Del, and then fill it with the desired color using the Paint Bucket Tool. Crop with the Crop Tool.

9. Save the result of your work to a file. Use the item “Save As…” or “Save for Web & Devices…” in the File section of the main menu. When saving, pay special attention to the choice of the format and the degree of data compression. If you intend to work with the image, save a copy in PSD format.

Highly professional bitmap editors such as Adobe Photoshop provide the most powerful tools for the metamorphosis of photos today. The results created go beyond the usual reality. Let's say in photoshop allowed to do fangs, presenting the character of the photographic composition in the form of a vampire.

You will need

  • - Adobe Photoshop;
  • - a file with a photo for processing.

Instructions

1. Open the photo you want to take fangs, in Adobe Photoshop. Select “Open…” in the File section of the main menu, or jointly press the keys Ctrl + O. Specify the file in the dialog that appears. Click Open.

2. Select one of the teeth from which the canine will be formed. Activate the Zoom Tool. Set a comfortable viewing scale for this fragment of the image.

3. Make a selection around the tooth. This can be done comfortably with the Magnetic Lasso Tool or Polygonal Lasso Tool. If necessary, adjust the selection in the fast mask mode or with the help of the items in the Modify section of the Select menu.

4. Copy the tooth to the newest layer (in parallel with its creation). Select the menu items Edit, Copy and Edit, Paste stepwise. It is also allowed to use the key combinations Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V.

5. Activate the image warp mode. Press Ctrl + Shift + D or use the Reselect item of the Selection menu in order to restore the previous selection area. Stepwise select the items Edit, Transform and Warp of the main menu. A mesh appears around the image of the tooth.

6. Make a canine from a tooth. Move the nodes of the mesh to achieve the required shape. After finishing the reforming, double-click in the center of the grid, or select any tool on the panel and click Apply in the query dialog.

7. Blend the images of the transformed and initial teeth that are in different layers. Activate the Eraser Tool. By clicking on the Brush control in the top panel, select a brush of the appropriate type, diameter and hardness. Set the Opacity to 10-20%. Erase the edges of the top layer image with the Eraser Tool until there are no visible borders between it and the background image.

9. Save the modified image. Press Shift + Ctrl + S or click on the “Save As ...” item in the File menu. In the dialog select the format and file name. Click the "Save" button.

The Liquify filter is one of the most convenient Photoshop tools for free deformation of an image. With this filter, it is possible not only to get details for creating a surreal collage, but also to make the figure in the picture more slender.

You will need

  • - Photoshop program;
  • - the photo.

Instructions

1. Use the Open option of the File menu to open the photo in a graphics editor. A photo taken on a monochrome background without texture, noise and shaded areas located near the shape that you are going to correct, unlock it with the Layer from Background option of the New group of the Layer menu.

2. A picture with a more difficult background will require a different preparation. Use the Lasso tool to select a shape with a small amount of background. Use the Layer via Copy option in the New group to copy the selection to the newest layer. If you deform an image using the Liquify filter tools, areas of the background that are close to those with which you are working may be changed. Later on, you will restore them from the original picture.

3. Using the Liquify option of the Filter menu, open the filter window and check the Show Mesh checkbox. The grid that appears will give you the chance to track the progress of the transformation.

4. Turn on the Pucker Tool and use its support to process the details of the shape that you want to reduce. To do this, adjust the size of the tool's brush so that it matches the width of the modified part of the body. Pixels affected by the brush will move to its center, marked with a cross.

5. The value of the Brush Density parameter determines the degree of displacement of the details of the picture located at different distances from the center of the brush. At the maximum value of this parameter, the tool will do the same for all pixels that fall under the brush. Setting the Brush Density to a low value will reduce the metamorphosis of the image around the edges of the brush.

6. The Brush Pressure parameter controls the speed of image metamorphosis. Set this parameter to a small value in order to be able to monitor the transformation process. Place the center of the brush on the selected part of the shape, hold down the left mouse button and wait for the required degree of metamorphosis of the image.

7. To narrow the shape, you may need the Forward Warp Tool, the one that displaces the pixels affected by the brush in the direction of its movement. The settings for this tool are similar to those for the Pucker Tool. Resize the Forward Warp Tool to the length of the segment you want to move, set the center of the brush to the edge of the shape and move the image.

8. Turn off the visibility of the grid. If in one of the areas of the photo the correction turned out to be excessive, restore the initial appearance of this fragment using the Reconstruct Tool.

9. To fix the background surrounding the shape, make a mask on the layer to which the filter was applied by clicking on the Add layer mask button. Remove the damaged background by painting it with black on the mask with the help of the Brush Tool.

10. Duplicate the layer with the initial image using the Duplicate Layer option of the Layer menu and mask on it the fragments of the shape that appeared from under the layer with the "thinner" image. This can be done with the Clone Stamp Tool.

11. Use the Save As option of the File menu to save the edited photo to a jpg file.

You never know when the "very moment" that you want to capture will come again. The conclusion suggests itself that it is necessary to always and everywhere carry a "DSLR" with you in order not to miss anything and at the same time get high-quality photographs. However, you must admit that this is inconvenient, which cannot be said about the usual mobile devices, like the iPhone or iPad, which allows you to catch in the lens and record a variety of moments from life in a matter of seconds. How not to forget in a hurry and the aesthetic side of the issue will be discussed further.

1. Composition in photography or why you need a "grid"

Composition is the harmony and ratio of objects in the field of the frame between themselves and with the whole, or, in other words, when the set is perceived as a whole. Any composition is based primarily on the rule of the golden ratio, and photography often uses a simplified version of it - the rule of thirds.

Surely every iPhone or iPad owner noticed a grid when photographing. So, the "rule of thirds" is a special principle of building a composition: the image is, as it were, divided into three equal parts horizontally and vertically.

The magic of this principle, based on the simplified rule of the golden ratio, lies in the points of intersection of the grid lines with each other, which is also called the "knot of attention". If we position the main subject in one of these zones, we will get a more effective shot than if we position the subject in the center.

The fact is that by placing the object in the center, we seem to cut the photo into two parts, confusing the viewer who is unable to quickly determine which of the two parts conditionally separated by the object in the center is more important, thereby blurring the overall impression.

Having figured out what the rule of thirds is, it becomes clear why the iPhone camera grid is needed and how to use it. If the grid is disabled on your device, you can enable it by going to Settings - Photo and Camera - Grid.

By the way, if initially the frame was chosen unsuccessfully, the resulting photo can be cropped - cropping the excess, re-determining the location of the main object. You can do this already in the "Photos" application by tapping on the "Change" button.

2. Choice of lighting Without going into the jungle and various nuances of lighting in photography, only a couple of important points can be noted, namely:

  • there should always be enough light. after all, the quality of the future picture directly depends on its quantity;
  • Avoid harsh lighting, such as on a sunny afternoon, especially when photographing portraits. This directional light creates deep shadows that can sometimes visually change the shape of an object or hide some details.
  • for portraits, diffused light is suitable, which naturally occurs when clouds appear in the sky, blocking the sun.
Deserves special attention flash on your mobile device. By default, it is better to always keep this option disabled, since in the daytime it is still unlikely to be useful to you, and at night it is practically useless, since the harsh light that it creates, if it does not light up the objects, still deprives them of their volume, making flat. That is, it is extremely difficult to get a beautiful picture with a flash, but if you are interested in its "information content", then the option can be turned on.

3. Zoom

Avoid digital zoom. Otherwise, you will get poor quality photos. Remember, in this case, the preferred zoom is your feet: it's best to get closer or further away if possible.

4. Locking the exposure / focus

IPhone and iPad cameras have another useful feature, namely exposure / focus lock, which is a sin not to use. Thanks to it, you can specify the focal point and even adjust the illumination level of the object in focus. One tap on the screen of the device at the time of shooting will allow you to specify a point, and long-term holding of your finger on the screen will fix it.

5. Panoramic shooting on iPhone

Panoramic shooting is a recent feature that only works on iPhone 4S and older models running iOS 6 and above. However, you can use third-party applications to take panoramic shots.

A new feature from Apple is capable of fixing a maximum viewing angle of 240 degrees. This is certainly not a full circle of 360 degrees, which applications are capable of producing, but also not 180 degrees of a person's field of view. Push the boundaries and shoot what usually remains behind the scenes.

6. Burst Mode for action scenes on iPhone

Burst Mode or Burst Mode is only available on iPhone 5s and does not require any additional activation in the settings. All you have to do is hold down the shutter button on your iPhone and it starts shooting at 10 frames per second, while the total number of frames captured will be counted on the screen.

Burst Mode is incredibly handy for capturing moving subjects and any dynamics in general. All received frames, if you go to the "Photo" application, collected in one common series.

8. Filters for iPhone and iPad

The stock application "Photos" already has 8 basic filters with which you can transform any image in the album. You can also use third-party applications, such as the popular Instagram or some photo editor, if you think that the available filters are not enough.

9.HDR (High Dynamic Range)

When shooting a static subject, use the HDR option, which can be activated directly in the Camera application, to cover a wider dynamic range of light intensity levels.

HDR images are created by combining several frames obtained when shooting the same place / object, but with a change in exposure.

However, do not forget to enable saving the original photo in the settings: Settings - Photo and Camera - Keep original... Should the HDR experiment fail, these preventive measures will provide a choice between the resulting HDR version of the photo and the saved original with normal exposure.

10. Use a variety of applications to take original pictures

Here's a short list of photo apps for iPhone and iPad:

To make a grid ( Grid) visible, you must enable it. First go View> Extras, then View> Show> Grid .

You will see a grid on the canvas of your document. Gridlines are not part of the document, they are just an auxiliary tool for work, i.e. when you save the document, the grid will not be visible in the image.

The grid itself is solid dark lines. The dotted lines are just auxiliary elements ( Subdivisions ).

Grid setup

You may need to customize the grid for yourself. This is very easy to do. To do this, go to the menu Edit> Preferences> Guides, Grid & Slices ...

Here you can set the color of the grid, style (lines, dashed lines), the distance between the main grid lines (in millimeters, inches, pixels), the number of auxiliary lines ( Subdivisions ).

Snap to Grid

Function Snap(Snap to Grid) is very useful for the user. It allows users to very easily align layers, shapes, text, and more. relative to the grid. When this function is active, the elements are automatically aligned relative to the nearest grid elements ( Grid). In order to enable this function, you must first select View> Snap, and then View> Snap To> Grid .

Upd: You can also turn on and off the snap mode while dragging an image element by pressing and releasing the key Ctrl .

Our smartphones are multifunctional devices that can do. Most often, of course, users use them for surfing the Net, chatting on social networks and taking pictures. Many iPhones have long ago replaced the main camera, others are still on the way to this, but not all images are equally good, and not everyone. What useful functions your iPhone camera has and how to use them correctly, I will tell you in this post.

1. Improving the composition of the frame using a grid

A well-constructed frame is already half of a successful photo. Often people do not pay attention to this important point and when shooting they incorrectly position the subject in the frame, and the whole photograph suffers from this.

These flaws can be easily avoided by using the grid function that overlays the viewfinder to help you determine the aspect ratio of the frame and the correct composition. You can enable it in the system settings, in the section Photo & Camera, the item is called Net.

Once you turn on the grid, your photos will not be perfect and you will need to practice before this happens, but with a grid it will be much easier for you to achieve good results than without it.

2. Add as much light as you need

Sometimes you have to take pictures in low light conditions. In this case, it is quite difficult to achieve good results, because the quality of the picture directly depends on the amount of light entering the frame. But don't despair. If you need to take a photo in twilight and semi-dark room, you can use the exposure lock and autofocus function:

  • aim the camera at a dark area of the frame and make a tap with hold until the inscription appears Exposure / Focus Lock;
  • now the frame will brighten noticeably and you can take a more or less decent photo without a flash;

Also, do not forget that this lock can be used to experiment with depth of focus, since in addition to exposure, autofocus is also locked.

3. Make more coverage of the landscape with panorama mode

An incredibly convenient feature that many people forget or neglect to use when shooting landscapes and large open spaces. This is how it works:

  • open the Camera and swipe to the left, switching to the mode Panorama(it is at the very end);
  • press the shutter button, then just slowly move the camera following the horizon line and wait for automatic detection.

The panorama mode on iPhone is incredibly simple, but there are two things that many people don't realize: you can change the direction of shooting with a tap, and you can also use the panorama mode in portrait orientation. This will help you photograph objects of any height and width, so they fit exactly in the frame.

4. Use burst mode for action scenes

Burst mode has recently been introduced to the iPhone, but its usefulness has already been appreciated by many. When shooting moving objects, it is very difficult to take a good photo and still not miss the event that needs to be captured. In such cases, do not neglect the burst mode. Just press and hold the shutter button and your iPhone will take as many photos per second as it can (up to 30 frames per second on the latest models).

So the next time you're filming a sporting event, children, or animals, be sure to take advantage of this tip.

5. Use filters to add emotion

Previously, you had to use third-party applications to use filters, but now there is no need for this. The iPhone camera does not contain such a rich set of filters as specialized applications, but in most cases they are enough. It is very easy to use them:

  • open the Camera and click on the icon with three circles to the right of the shutter button;
  • using the preview, select the filter you like.

There are 8 effects in total, including black and white photos and sepia, so you will find something suitable for a particular event anyway. Effects can also be applied after shooting by pressing Change and select the familiar circle button.
