We recently told you about the NVIDIA Shield Tablet tablet - a very curious game for gamers who want to get both a portable game device and a full-featured Android tablet. But almost simultaneously with the Shield Tablet, another tablet developed by NVIDIA appeared on the Russian market and offering many possibilities of Shield Tablet, but for less money: Tegra Note 7.

However, unlike the Shield Tablet, which is produced and sold under the NVIDIA brand, Tegra Note 7 is something like a reference platform, which is distributed to NVIDIA partners, and they already make a ready-made device and sell it on their own. Another thing is that the final device has minimal differences from the reference - much smaller than, let's say, NVIDIA video cards from different manufacturers. Therefore, ultimately, for the buyer is not so important, under what kind of brand in his country, Tegra Note 7 is sold.

So, on the Internet you can find Gazer Tegra Note 7, Evga Tegra Note 7 ... But it is necessary to understand that all this, in fact, the same device - the differences only in the design of the box, maximum - in the configuration and some secondary characteristics .

We have Tegra Note sold under the brand - we were tested. But before proceeding to acquaintance with the device, it is worth going to his story. The first modification of Tegra Note 7 was announced last September, that is more than a year ago. But in that version there was no LTE. Six months later, NVIDIA has shown on CES, and then on the MWC 2014 new version, with a LTE module. It is she going to our market. It is clear that six months, who passed from the MWC 2014, are also considerable, but for budget and medium-budget devices, the novelty is not as important as the current price and characteristics ratio. About how the TEGRA Note 7 is about this, we will tell us in our article.

Strong competitors at Tegra Note 7 quite a few, but the most obvious to us are presented, first, Google Nexus 7 of the second generation, and secondly, iPad mini Retina. In addition, of course, the potential buyer will compare the possibilities of Tegra Note 7 with NVIDIA Shield Tablet, so we also can't include it in a comparison. However, we repeat that the potential competitors at Tegra Note 7 are much more than they got into our table.

So, Tegra Note 7 loses to all competitors presented in the table, according to the screen characteristics, in addition, the limitations of the maximum memory capacity of 48 GB (16 GB of the built-in memory plus another 32 GB can be obtained by setting a microSD card). For a tablet that has good gaming capabilities and the release of Micro-HDMI, allowing it to use it as a media player, this is, of course, minus. On the other hand, Google Nexus 7 does not have a memory card slot at all, and a non-standard slimport adapter is required to output to the external screen.

Another weak point of the novelty is the lack of support for 5 GHz Wi-Fi range (all competitors it is). Well, in comparison with Android-competitors, it has a smaller amount of RAM. Let's see how it affects the results of testing!

Equipment

The tablet is sold in the box inserted into the superstar. The superobrian is decorated in the NVIDIA - Salad and Black corporate colors.

We remove the dust cover and see the black box, inside of which is a very standard set: leaflets, charger 5 B 2 A and Micro-USB cable.

The most valuable component of the configuration is the stylus that is inserted into the tablet itself. His tip has a cone shape and is made of material similar to rubber. From the opposite side of the stylus - the same rubber tip. And the rest of the stylus is metallic. There are no buttons on the stylus.

Note that optionally the cover is available for Tegra Note 7. For its attachment, it is necessary to pull out a long thin plastic plug from the top edge of the tablet (it is visible in the photo above) and insert the root cover in the groove remaining from the plug.

Design

The appearance of the tablet itself is largely similar to NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet. Is that Tegra Note 7 a little smaller (this is understandable: the screen size of the Shield Tablet is 8 inches, and Tegra Note 7 is 7 inches).

The main feature of the front side of the device - the speakers on the left and right of the screen. This is, of course, plus. A minus is a fairly wide frame around the screen. Because of them, the tablet is not very comfortable to keep in one hand (although, repeat, the screen diagonal is 7 inches, not much more than many tablet phones).

The rear surface is covered with matte plastic type Soft-touch. In the center of the device brand - Tegra Note. In the upper right corner - the chamber's eye, and under it - a microphone hole. The faces are bevelled from the rear surface. On the top face (in the corner that near the camera) we see slots for the SIM card and microSD protected by a plug. Nearby - buttons for adjusting the volume (plastic, rather elastic).

On the other side of the upper face there is a slot for the stylus.

On the right face (if you keep the device with a screen to yourself) we see another dynamics grid.

And on the left side there is a power button (quite tight, pressed with a good audible sound) and all connectors: Micro-USB, Micro-HDMI and 3.5 mm socket for the headset. Micro-USB supports the connection of external drives over the OTG interface. As for Micro-HDMI, this is another minus device compared to NVIDIA Shield Tablet, where MINI-HDMI was. The fact is that the cables and the MICRO-HDMI connectors themselves are extremely short-lived, unlike more reliable mini-HDMI.

On the bottom edge of the tablet - only the groove for the cover, closed by a plug. We have already told about it in connection with the package.

In general, the design is calm, quite faceless and does not cause delight or rejection. The only thing it stands out is the frontal speakers. Well, for those who are going to buy a cover, will be a big plus the presence of a groove for its root - thus, after attaching the cover, the dimensions of the device will not be changed.

Screen

The tablet is equipped with a seventhuminum screen with a resolution of 1280 × 800. According to today's standards - a modest indicator. However, the screen resolution is only one of the characteristics. And what about the case with other display characteristics? The editor of the "Projectors and TV" section Alexey Kudryavtsev conducted detailed testing of the display and is ready to answer this question!

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface resistant to the appearance of scratches. Judging by the brightness of the reflected objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen is worse than Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter just Nexus 7). For clarity, we give a photo on which a white surface is reflected in the screens of both tablets (NVIDIA TEGRA NOTE 7 - right, then it can be distinguished by the size of the display area, which is more due to the removed screen buttons, and on all comparative photos below the tested tablet is located Over Nexus 7):

NVIDIA Tegra Note 7 screen is noticeably lighter. The reflection in the screen is tried, which involves the presence of an air layer between the surface of the matrix and the outer glass. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (fat-repellent) coating (very effective, even a little better than Nexus 7), so traces from fingers are removed significantly easier, and appear at a lower rate than in the case of conventional glass.

When manually controlled brightness, its maximum value was about 490 kD / m², and the minimum - 15 cd / m². The maximum brightness is high, but, given the weak anti-glare properties, with bright daylight, the image on the screen should not be very sensible. In complete darkness, brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. The automatic brightness adjustment over the illumination sensor works (it is located to the left of the front camera at portrait orientation). In automatic mode, when changing external light conditions, the screen brightness is rising, and decreases. In complete darkness, the auturance function reduces the brightness of up to 190 kD / m² (overly brightly), in conditions lit by artificial offices (approximately 400 lux) sets 410-460 kD / m² (blaccable), in a very bright environment (matches the lighting clear outside The premises, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 LCs or a little more) increases to a maximum, that is, up to 490 kD / m² (as it should be). It turns out that this function works not entirely adequately, since in most cases the brightness is overestimated. At the reduced level of brightness there is a highlighting modulation, but its frequency is very high - 23438 Hz, which eliminates the visibility of the screen flicker.

The screen has good viewing angles without inverting the shades and without a significant shift of colors, even at large viewing deviations from perpendicular to the screen. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is slightly different from the standard 6500 K and the deviation from the spectrum of absolutely black body (ΔE) less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for the consumer device. In this case, the variation of the color temperature and Δe is small, which has a positive effect on the visual perception of the color balance. (Dark areas of the gray scale can not be considered, since there the balance of colors does not matter, and the measurement error of the color characteristics on the low brightness is large.)

Let's summarize. The screen has a high maximum brightness, but it is weak anti-glare properties, so the readability will be low. In complete dark, brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. Mode with automatic adjustment of brightness is almost useless, as the screen brightness overslets. The advantages include an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of visible flicker, the high stability of black to the rejection of the view from the perpendicular to the surface of the screen, close to the SRGB color coverage, as well as a good color balance. The quality screen is generally good, but unbending.

Operating system and software

The tablet comes with the Google Android 4.4.2 operating system (Kitkat). With those changes that Nvidia introduced to the OS interface, we are already familiar to NVIDIA Shield Tablet. So, the work desk here looks identically.

Pay attention to the lower strip, where the Android buttons are located. When you start any application, this strip disappears, and to call it back, you need to make a swipe from the bottom face of the screen. If we pull out the stylus from the tablet, then two more buttons will appear on this strip.

The left button (in the form of palms) allows you to block the screen for the finger touch. That is, when this function is activated, the screen will only take the touch of the stylus. It can be very useful when drawing, for example. As for the right button, it allows you to highlight some part of the screen (arbitrary shape) and save it as an image.

Among the pre-installed applications, we note the game Eden to Green and Zen Pinball HD, as well as TEGRA Draw Drawing - however, much less interesting than NVIDIA Dabbler, available on NVIDIA Shield Tablet. There are no watercolor effects in Tegra DRAW, and in general, the functionality is modest.

We also note that NVIDIA representatives promise the speedy update to Android L, as soon as the operating system is released. And for the budget device, this is a very attractive promise, since less well-known manufacturers guarantee an update until the next large version of Android are not in a hurry.

Platform and productivity

Unlike NVIDIA Shield Tablet, working on the new NVIDIA Tegra K1 chip, the tablet in question works on the previous generation SOC NVIDIA - Tegra 4. Let's figure out how much Tegra Note 7 is different from NVIDIA Shield Tablet, as well as from iPad Mini Retina and Google Nexus 7 second generation.

Attention: the results of competitors' tablets in the tables below may differ from those that you will find in these devices. Since articles were written for a long time, and part of the tests since then seriously updated, we drove some benchmarks again.

Let's start testing with browser benchmarks: SUNSPIDER 1.0, Octane Benchmark and Kraken Benchmark. In all cases, we used the Google Chrome browser, except iPad, where Safari was used.

As we see, in the browser tests, the lag from Tegra K1 is, but it is not very big. At the same time, Nvidia Tegra Note 7 more than twice overtakes Google Nexus 7.

The following in our program will be Android test - MobileXPRT 2013. Its feature is that it imitates the real actions of the user (use of filters to photographs, scrolling Internet pages, creating a slideshow), so its results sufficiently indicate how smoothly the tablet works In everyday operations.

The picture is repeated in accuracy, although we see that this test no longer reveals the potential of modern SOC.

Let us turn to the integrated Android-benchmark Antutu Benchmark 4.

Here Nvidia Tegra 4 shows an excellent result, only a little remaining from Tegra K1. Google Nexus 7 - in Outsiders, and his lag about Tegra Note 7 is huge.

But GeekBench 3 We did not manage to run on Tegra Note 7: the application crashed immediately after starting the test. Amazing! As a rule, GEEKBENCH 3 works without problems on any devices.

The last group of benchmarks is devoted to GPU performance testing. We used Epic Citadel, GFX Benchmark and 3DMark.

Let's start with Epic Citadel.

The result of Tegra Note 7 is almost maximum, but do not forget that this test is started in the screen resolution, which is maximum for the device, and in this case it has a TEGRA Note 7 lower than the Shield Tablet and Google Nexus 7. So difficult Make a conclusion on this test, whether Nvidia Tegra 4 is faster than Snapdragon S4 Pro, or not.

But GfXBenchmark already gives an answer to this question: Tegra 4 faster Snapdragon S4 Pro, but at times slower than Tegra K1, and one and a half times slower than Apple A7 installed in iPad mini Retina.

It is curious that one of the subtestas - the MANHATTAN scene - on Tegra Note 7 was unavailable. It is strange, because on the older Nexus 7 she worked (albeit and demonstrating very low productivity).

The next GPU test is 3DMark. We present the results for two modes: Ice Storm Extreme and Ice Storm Unlimited.

And here the Tegra 4 is even a little bit a little apple A7. However, the difference with NVIDIA Shield Tablet is still more than double. Outsider is still Nexus 7.

Android games

Well, now let's see how things are going with Android games. We used our standard list of Android games, compatible with which we check each new tablet regardless of the manufacturer and SOC.

As we can see, compatibility is very good: all games were established and started, the problems were only with N.O.V.A. 3: For some reason, the game perceived the device as a gamepad (possibly confused tablet with the first NVIDIA Shield, who worked on the same SOC) and turned off the touch control, offering to use the buttons and geimpad sticks. So it was impossible to play it. But this game has not been updated for a long time, and in the program plan it seems to be the most imperfect, so most tablets put in a dead end. But with more correct games, there were no problems.

In general, SOC NVIDIA has always been among the optimal solutions for mobile games, and Tegra 4 is no exception. Despite the radical lower performance of the GPU than the Tegra K1, Tegra 4 supports all modern games and does not experience any productivity shortage. It is not surprising: a year ago, Tegra 4 was a top SOC, and by now she has not yet had time to get out.

Video playback

We tested the HDMI interface. Note that the device is equipped with a MICRO-HDMI connector. This miniature connector (already than Micro-USB), but has 19 contacts. HDMI cables for such a connector are usually pretty rigid that when operating often causes a plug skew in the slot and failure in the image transmission. After some time, this connector is cleared, and its use becomes impossible. In general, the operational characteristics of this method of connecting to the outer screen are extremely low. The use of the Micro-HDMI connector is still justified in the case of miniature telephone type devices, but in the tablets it is necessary to use more reliable options for MINI-HDMI, Mini-DisplayPort or even a full-sized version of HDMI.

For testing with HDMI output, we used the LG IPS237L monitor

The output mode cannot be changed - 720p at 60 frames / s. With an active connection via HDMI, the image output to the screens of the tablet and the monitor is carried out only in the landscape orientation (the HDMI connector is on the tablet on the left). An exact copy of the tablet screen is displayed on the external device, while the image on the monitor is written into the boundaries of its screen in height, but for the preservation of the original proportions to the right and on the left are narrow black fields:

For the picture 16: 9, black strips are also displayed on top and bottom. Because of such fitting pictures to the proportions 16:10 image output 1: 1 by pixels no longer get.

The sound of HDMI is displayed (in this case, the sounds were heard through the headphones connected to the monitor, since there are no loudspeakers in the monitor itself) and has very good quality. At the same time, the tablet loudspeakers are disconnected, and the volume with the buttons on the tablet is not adjustable, the sound only turns on and off.

Next, using a dialing of test files with one division per frame with an arrow and a rectangle (see "Methods for testing playback devices and displaying a video signal. Version 1 (for mobile devices)") We checked how the video is displayed on the tablet itself. Screenshots with shutter speed in 1 C helped to determine the nature of the output of video files with various parameters: Various resolution 1280 to 720 (720p), 1920 at 1080 (1080p) and 3840 at 2160 (4K) pixels and frame rate 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 frames / s. According to the frame output criterion, the quality of video playback playback on the tablet screen is good, since frames (or frames) can be displayed with more or less uniform intervals and without frames. The tablet can even show files with 4K resolution to 30 frames / s inclusive. When playing video files with a resolution of 1280 to 720 pixels (720p), the image of the video file is output one-in-one, exactly on the wide border of the screen and in the true resolution of 720p. The brightness range appears on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - in the shadows and in the lights displays all gradations of shades, which is required for correct playback of typical video files.

However, FULL HD clarity is not obtained, since the above scaling is still performed. On a HDMI connected monitor, the displayed brightness range corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - in the shadows and in the lights are displayed all gradations of shades. The results of the output tests on the monitor are shown in the table above in the "HDMI (monitor" block. Good quality.

It turns out that connecting to external monitors, TVs and projectors, carried out using HDMI, can be used for games, viewing movies, displaying web pages and other activities that wins from multiple screen size. True, you will have to come to terms with the fact that the outer screen area is 16: 9 is not completely used, and the clarity of the image is slightly reduced.

Communication

The tablet is equipped with the LTE module. This applies to all Etuline Tegra Note 7 models, so there is simply no option to buy a tablet without LTE.

The tablet supports the "hot" installation and replacement of SIM cards (that is, it does not reboot). The 3G network catches without problems, LTE in the zone of unsure reception catches medium (better than the iPhone 5S, but worse than the iPhone 6).

It is important that all telephone functions are also available in Tegra Note 7: calls, SMS, MMS.

Autonomous work and ergonomics

The tablet is equipped with two chambers - frontal (0.3 mp) and rear (5 MP).
