Obviously, it is needed so that a "broken" disc (for example, Blu-ray or double-layer DVD) can subsequently be recorded on smaller media. It should be noted that splitting is available only for mds images. Also, in the "Reading Options" you can put a tick in front of "skip reading errors" if the media from which the recording is being performed is damaged.
