⇡ Options for Huawei Watch 2

The device is produced in two main modifications: Sport and Classic. They differ in the style of the case and the material of the removable strap: in the second version, it is made not of plastic, but of genuine leather. In addition, the classic version comes without a 4G module. The latter is also absent in some variants of the sports model. So, the bright orange version is available with the 4G module, and the gray one without it. The black model that came to us for testing can be either with a 4G interface or without it, so when buying a device you should pay special attention to the version, because the price of the watch differs by several thousand rubles, and the possibilities are they will be completely different.

But the presence of a 4G interface and a SIM card slot are far from the only advantages of Huawei Watch 2. These smart watches (in any case, this is how the manufacturer positions this device) can boast the presence in its arsenal of the most complete set of interfaces for mobile communications and communication with smartphones and headsets. Not without a GPS / GLONASS module, the presence of which distinguishes the new product from most conventional fitness bracelets. Well, the already mentioned presence on board of the module for nanoSIM cards generally makes this device independent and equal in capabilities to a mobile phone with a small display. However, the resolution of the built-in AMOLED display is quite big, so during testing we will try to compare this device in terms of usability with a smartphone too.

The manufacturer generously endowed his brainchild with various sensors: there is a gyroscope, compass, barometer and heart rate sensor. Together with the GPS module, they allow Huawei Watch 2 to keep track of the distance traveled, the number of steps, heart rate and calories burned. Well, the cherry on top is the reliable protection of the device from water and dust according to the IP68 standard. Thus, you can safely swim with this watch without worrying about its tightness.

Even from the above technical characteristics, it can be seen that the device combines the functions of a watch, a smartphone, and a fitness bracelet. Let's get to know him better in order to determine how successfully the manufacturer managed to create such an original hybrid.

Appearance

As mentioned above, we got the watch in the Sport version. Their appearance is quite consistent with the name, but this model does not have any special severity inherent in many sports watches. Is that the thickness of the Huawei Watch 2 case turned out to be quite noticeable. They may not fit under the sleeve of a shirt, but under looser and more stretching free-style clothing, they can easily. Large dimensions will surely scare off most of the female audience. Even in promotional photos, the Huawei Watch 2 is only worn by men.

The appearance of the HUAWEI WATCH 2

The watch case is plastic, but the bezel (a ring with seconds and numbers on the front side) is made of ceramic. In fact, this is just an imitation of the bezel, as its real twin brother must have a rotating mechanism for setting the timer. In this case, the ring does not have the ability to turn. But under it there are wireless interfaces and antennas - that is why the bezel is made of ceramic, a radio-transparent material. Note that Gorilla Glass is pretty much recessed into the body. The bezel protects it quite well, so it won't be easy to accidentally break the glass.

On one of the sides of the case there are two round control buttons made of metal. The Huawei Watch 2 does not have any other controls, since it mainly uses the touch screen to work with the watch. Well, the back panel is made of metal. It contains a contact pad for attaching the charging station, as well as three small heart rate sensors with green LEDs. If you take a closer look, it is not difficult to notice a small hole on the edge of the metal panel, behind which the speaker and microphone are hidden.

Watch with the strap removed

To get to the SIM-card slot, you have to remove one of the parts of the strap, since it is not difficult at all to do this. The SIM card slot is hidden on one of the edges of the case.

Strap

The strap itself has a standard fastening with a hairpin and a spring mechanism, 20 mm wide. The strap is easy enough to replace with any other one that matches the size, but the one included in the package has an original shape that exactly matches the shape of the watch case. You can replace the strap, but a watch with a new, incomplete strap will probably not look so impressive and harmonious.

Strap design

The supplied strap is made of soft plastic. It has nice ribbing on the front and numerous holes to fit any wrist size. You don't have to trim or adjust anything for comfortable wearing: put it on and go.

Charging station

The charging station from the delivery set is made in a white plastic case, under which a magnetic base is hidden. Thanks to him, the station is securely attached to the metal plate of the watch, and disconnection requires a small but tangible force. The docking station has a built-in USB cable long enough to easily place your device anywhere.

In general, the Huawei Watch 2 model is distinguished by excellent elaboration of details, very high quality materials and workmanship, as well as simply bright and catchy appearance. This device is pleasant to hold in your hands, it attracts the eyes of others and is not afraid of scratches, dust or water. It is worth giving a high score for this in terms of design.

Possibilities

The watch runs on the new version of Android Wear 2.0 OS. To sync with a smartphone, you need to install the Android Wear app on it, but to transfer activity and health data, you will additionally need to install the Huawei Health app or some similar app from a third-party developer - Google Fit, Strava or any other.

Android Wear 2.0 is an almost complete Android OS, but adapted to the capabilities of smartwatches and other wearable devices. It allows you to keep in touch with smartphones that work not only under Android OS, but also under iOS.

Dial selection

The user first evaluates any watch by the dial, but in this case it will not be easy to do this, since the dial of the Huawei Watch 2 is interchangeable. A huge number of them is offered to the user to choose from: there are both classic and "electronic" versions, there are dials with a display of the time zone or the current state of the body, beautiful pictures, a calendar, contacts and many, many others. Most watch faces have shortcut buttons for certain applications: calls, workouts, and so on.

Main menu

The Android Wear 2.0 menu is made in the form of a semicircle. To navigate through it, you just need to make the usual swiping movement up or down the screen. This will start scrolling with a characteristic click: first faster, then slower. In general, the animation effects for navigation are just superb! Despite the small size of the display, there is not even the slightest sign of inaccurate navigation. Even typing a text on the watch display (without errors!) Is not so difficult, which at the same time speaks of the high quality of the built-in touch surface and the well-tested control system. It's a pity that you can't use the bezel like the Samsung Gear S3 for navigation.

Huawei Watch 2 wireless interfaces

Now let's see what scenarios are available to the owner of Huawei Watch 2. Firstly, in our modification of the watch there is a cellular module with 4G / LTE, which allows you to use the device in a completely autonomous mode. So, having a second SIM card installed in the corresponding slot of the Huawei Watch 2, you can leave the main smartphone at home and go, for example, run, swim or ride a bike. You can connect a headset or headphones to your watch for making calls or listening to music on the road.

Typing and translator function

On the display, you can type small messages or even use voice input for this. Well, with the call forwarding function, you will not miss calls coming to your main phone. At the same time, Android Wear 2.0 has such a useful feature as Android Pay for one-touch payments, which means that your wallet will also be with you - on your wrist.

Address book, calls and reminders

When you come home, you can turn off the cellular module and use the Huawei Watch 2 again as an addition to your smartphone. Messages will be broadcast to it and calls will be received with the ability to answer them. Calling from the watch is also possible using the automatically synchronized contact book. In this mode of operation, the smartphone can be stowed deep into a bag or backpack, and the watch will play the role of some kind of intermediate, more comfortable interface in terms of wearing. For example, from the clock it will be possible to control the playback of musical compositions, although they will be played back from the smartphone.

Activity monitoring app

Working in both the first and second modes, the Huawei Watch 2 also plays the role of a fitness bracelet, tracking the user's activity and health indicators. You can also track your heart rate, calories burned, steps taken and distance using the app built into the watch. To do this, go to the menu section with the name "Monitoring" or press the corresponding key on the dial by default. The application itself determines the mode of activity and independently calculates various health indicators individually for the user's body. Well, the traversed path can not only be recorded, but also observed in real time on the map.

The Pulse application, in addition to demonstrating the current value of this parameter, builds graphs of heart rate changes, and also shows how long a person had a certain pulse. Also, data on the current heart rate value can be obtained from some sports-oriented watch faces. The same applies to information about the number of steps or the distance traveled.

Huawei Wear app

In general, to work with these indicators, you can use the Huawei Wear application installed on your smartphone. It has a very simple russified interface, which displays all the characteristics described above in real time. The application also calculates various indicators, builds weekly graphs of activity and calories burned, and also has many other useful functions.

Workout

To organize workouts for various types of activity in the watch itself, you can activate the appropriate application that will track the training time, record the track passed, and also record the state of the body, so that later you can analyze the data using built-in tools or using applications on a smartphone.

As testing has shown, wearing the Huawei Watch 2 will be comfortable for both a respectable man and a puny teenager. The watch fits perfectly on any size wrist. Even a girl will fit this model, even if she looks like a man. Due to its not too large mass, the watch does not heavily weight the hand, although it often interferes with the sleeves of clothes due to its decent thickness.

The brightness and clarity of the screen are respectable. Even in the bright sun, the dial is clearly visible, and only glare can hide this or that object from the user's eyes. The latter can be easily removed with a simple turn of the hand. There were no slowdowns in the operation of the menus and applications during the entire testing period. The menu works like clockwork!

Receiving calls works flawlessly. The built-in speaker is loud enough, although you will hardly be able to talk on a noisy street without a headset. The same goes for the microphone. However, the latter, even in the metro, perfectly recognizes voice search requests using the built-in Google Assistant function. By the way, this feature can be quickly activated by pressing and holding one of the watch's two metal buttons.

Like a regular smartphone, the Huawei Watch 2 can be protected from unauthorized access. If this function is enabled, while the device is on your hand and the heart rate sensors recognize it, the screen lock will not be activated. But, as soon as you take off your watch, it will ask you to enter a picture password. Despite the small display, this is not difficult to do. In general, the device can really be used instead of a smartphone, but it is still impossible to call it a full-fledged replacement for this device.

The work of wireless sensors, satellite navigation module and sensors for fitness tracking is also not satisfactory. I even want to write a couple of lines about the heart rate sensor separately: the fact is that Huawei Watch 2 does not require any particularly tight fit to the hand for correct operation of the heart rate monitor, like many fitness trackers. At the same time, the strap does not pinch the wrist and does not create discomfort. Even if you, like me, do not like to wear a watch, with the Huawei Watch 2 you can even sleep comfortably and without the desire to get rid of a foreign object on your hand.

conclusions

Finding shortcomings in a watch with as many functions and features as you can imagine is a bad job. There are really no serious ones. You can, of course, find fault with the tangible thickness of the case, but even this "drawback" is easily smoothed out by the low weight of the device. Advantages can be described for a very long time, but we will try to highlight only the most basic of them:

  • nice, not pretentious design with interchangeable dials;
  • comfortable strap for long-term wearing;
  • protection of the case according to the IP68 standard;
  • full set of wireless communication interfaces;
  • slot for SIM-cards and the ability to fully autonomous work as a phone;
  • GPS / GLONASS module;
  • set of built-in sensors for fitness tracking.

It is not surprising that the future owner of the Huawei Watch 2 will have to fork out a little to get the desired device. A simple office worker will be pleased by communicating or simply monitoring correspondence with a wristwatch. Well, if this office worker also plays sports in the evenings or on weekends, then Huawei Watch2 can be a real gift for him.

Smart watches Huawei Watch 2 Classic will become a worthy companion for active people striving to have a healthy body, keep abreast of events and just enjoy life. Running the new Android Wear 2 operating system, they open up wide communication opportunities, allowing you to install all kinds of applications, carry out contactless payments in stores, use tips from Google and much more. The model was able to work autonomously using its own sim card, Wi-Fi networks and support for GPS and Glonass navigation systems.

Design

Smart watch Huawei Watch 2 has a stylish classic design and will look great with both a business and casual suit. The Classic series is equipped with a leather strap with a variable wrist girth in the range of 140 - 210 mm. The ceramic bezel has a highly precise advanced engraving. The lugs of the strap have a lowered design, which allows the watch to fit more tightly to your hand, ensuring high accuracy of the heart rate monitor. The model is made in a waterproof case and can be used in any weather conditions. The built-in 420 mAh battery will provide up to two days of operation of the smart watch in active mode when fully charged.

Ideal for sports and leisure

Huawei Watch 2 has a wide range of built-in sensors, including: capacitive sensor, barometer, accelerometer, gyroscope, 3-axis compass, altimeter, ambient light sensor and built-in PPG heart rate monitor with continuous heart rate measurement. This allows you to track your athletic performance as accurately as possible during your workouts. The watch supports various sports and allows you to quickly activate the desired mode. The tips of the virtual trainer will also become convenient, motivating you to improve your results. Built-in satellite navigation modules GPS and Glonass allow you to track your route, as well as use color maps in real time. The watch supports the connection of a Bluetooth headset and can play music from its own built-in memory.

Appearance, materials, controls, assembly

I will make a reservation right away that I am not an expert in watches, so I will evaluate their design according to my common taste. And, in my opinion, the Watch 2 came out great in terms of looks. They have a modern, sporty design, but they also look great with casual wear. For a suit, this model is unlikely to fit.

As far as I understand, there are four different versions of the watch: black, orange, gray and a special leather version, but only the black model was sold in the official online store, and I had it on the test. If we talk about personal preference, then I really liked the version with the orange strap, it looks cool.

The watch strap is made of silicone with a fine ribbed pattern. Thanks to this, they do not stick to the wrist and are more pleasant to wear for a long time.

The strap is removable; under the bottom there is a tray for a SIM-card with LTE support. Yes, you can use this watch as a standalone device without a smartphone.

On the back you can see the contacts for the charger and the heart rate monitor.

The watch case is made of plastic, and the bezel with the hands is made of aluminum. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the thickness of the watch is 12.6 mm, it is felt well on the hand, especially after some thin ZenWatch 3. But the weight of the model is relatively small - only 57 grams.

Compared to Apple Watch 2

There are two physical buttons on the right. They can be programmed for their actions, by default the upper one calls the application menu, and the lower one starts a sports training.

The watch is waterproof according to the IP68 standard, you can not only walk in the rain, but also swim in it.

Screen

When I tested the smartwatches last year, the pixelation was very conspicuous, the manufacturers skimped on the resolution in order to increase the battery life. This year the situation has changed, and finally we see normal pixel density in the watch.

The picture on the Watch 2 display is simply excellent, only one detail spoils it. To make the most of this resolution, you need beautiful, elegant watch faces, and they don't go well with the sporty design of the watch. On the other hand, it is a pleasure to navigate menus or read messages from them. In always-on display mode, the dial gradually fades and changes its shape, this is a common feature of Android Wear, but it looks beautiful nonetheless.

In the sun, the text is much worse visible, however, you can still easily see the time, pulse, or any other information.

Operating system

The watch runs on the latest Android Wear 2.0, which automatically gives us support for two important functions - working with iOS and Android Pay. IOS supports messaging, use as a headset or remote control for a music player (however, only switching tracks is available, you cannot change the volume). At the moment, I do not recommend using any watch with iOS other than the Apple Watch, otherwise you will noticeably lose functionality at the same cost.

Performance

An accessory like a smartwatch does not require any super performance, the main thing is that menus and applications work without slowdowns, and the Watch 2 copes with these requirements perfectly. For a month of use, I have not noticed any interface jams.

Autonomous work

If you use the watch as a regular accessory, occasionally checking the time and incoming notifications, then you can safely count on two days of work. In training mode (running or walking with GPS and heart rate monitor on), they are discharged by 25% per hour. Watch 2 loses 10% charge overnight.

At the same time, the watch has support for fast charging: in half an hour they are charged by 55%, in 45 minutes - by 80%, and in an hour - by 94%. And this is when using a 2.1A power supply.

Overall, the Watch 2 scores well with two full days of daily use, four hours of training, and one hour of charging. I wish they weren't so much discharged at night.

Wireless interfaces and capabilities

First of all, it is worth noting the presence of a separate SIM card slot. Thanks to him, the watch can be used without a smartphone. Considering the number of Android Wear apps, this is a significant advantage.

GPS and heart rate monitor hints at walking, jogging, swimming, and other workouts. For this, a special Huawei Wear application is preinstalled. It's intuitive and functional. For example, while walking or running, the distance traveled, the current heart rate and its correspondence to training (norm, fat burning, aerobic and anaerobic load) are displayed in real time. As far as I know, recording heart rate limits is important for athletes.

After training, all statistics are uploaded to the application, and you can view them from your smartphone.

The watch has a built-in microphone and speaker, from which you can make and receive calls. I called Roman Belykh, Roma noted the good quality of speech transmission, but some mechanicalness in his voice, for my part I heard it with the same mechanical notes. In general, the quality of speech transmission and the external speaker, I would rate at four.

In theory, Android Pay should work as well, but I still couldn't get it on my watch. Functionally and at the hardware level, they must support such a payment, but in fact it does not work yet.

Conclusion

In the branded online store for Huawei Watch 2 Sport they ask 23 thousand rubles, registered users of the store can buy them for 2 000 less.

For the money, you get some of the best watches with a great sporty design, IP68 protection, a good display, the latest Android Wear 2.0, a full suite of sensors, and great battery life. Perhaps the only drawback I would call the excessive thickness of the case, but if this does not bother you, then in return you will get honest two days of work.

In total, there will be three versions on sale:

  • Black Watch 2 Sport Bluetooth at a price of 22,990 rubles;
  • Black Watch 2 Classic Bluetooth at a price of 26,990 rubles;
  • Black / orange Watch 2 Sport LTE at a price of 26,990 rubles.

The direct competitor of this watch is the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier / Classic. They are as close as possible in functionality and price, differences in design and operating system (Tizen vs Android Wear). Both models look attractive, so it's worth choosing based on appearance, that is, what the soul lies more with.

More recently, at the world-famous exhibition MWC 2017, the world saw a new watch Huawei Watch 2. The company from the Middle Kingdom has recently pleasantly surprised with its products, and the new watch is an example of this. Let's take a closer look at every aspect of the gadget and make a detailed review of the Huawei Watch 2.

Price

On the official website of the company, the cost of "smart" watches is 22,990 rubles. At first, it may scare off, but if you take the models of flagship watches from other companies, the price tag will be the same, if not higher.

Specifications

Huawei Watch 2 received a 1.2 '' AMOLED display with a resolution of 390x390p - the matrix is excellent, the image quality raises no objections, as well as the information visibility in the bright sun.

The battery capacity is 420 mAh, which is quite enough for 2 days of operation of the gadget with constantly active Bluetooth. For a watch of this level, this is quite a good volume.

The Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor with a frequency of 1.1 GHz, combined with 768 MB of RAM, are responsible for the speed of operation. The built-in memory is 4 GB. The operating system is the most advanced, both for today and for the next year at least - Android Wear 2.0

A user who has never dealt with such an OS will need 10-20 minutes to understand how it works, but already during operation, you can identify for yourself the ability to control the device using a wrist movement.

So, for example, moving the hand towards and away from you will scroll through the menu of the device, and with a slight shake of the hand, from any menu item, the watch will switch back to the dial.

Speaking of the dials, you can change them at your own discretion - initially, different options are installed in the phone. Also, if you are a fan of classic watches, the OS in conjunction with the AMOLED display allows you to leave the screen on for as long as you need (such displays do not spend a lot of energy just for the screen turned on).

The watch is available in various modifications, so you can purchase a version with LTE support due to the built-in e-SIM, as well as a version with a nanoSIM slot. All this makes it possible not only to make and receive calls, but also to stay online even if there is no connection with a smartphone.

It is worth noting the popular IP68 standard, which provides maximum protection against moisture, dust, and also allows you to submerge the device under water to a depth of 1.5 meters and a built-in heart rate sensor and NFS for using Android Pay contactless payments.

Appearance

The watch is produced in 2 modifications: the sport version, which received a sporty design with a plastic case and the classic version made of stainless steel. Plus, the classic version has a quality leather strap.

The classic version has a 2 mm narrower screen than the sports version, but the total thickness of the watch is 12.6 mm. On the side there are 2 physical buttons: the top one is responsible for opening the application menu, and the bottom one is for accessing the sports capabilities of the smart watch.

On the back of the watch case there are contacts for the charger. The SIM card slot itself is located under the strap attachment, which, in turn, can be unfastened and replaced.

If you just take the watch in hand, it may seem a little large and massive, but as soon as you put it on your hand, such a thought immediately disappears. Both the sporty and the classic versions look elegant and stylish on the hand.

Interface

Huawei Watch 2 has a very wide range of features and applications. The user interface is simple and logical.

Swipe down from top to bottom and the traditional curtain comes down, with which you can get quick access to the main settings. In the menu itself, applications are selected by swiping across the screen. There you can also get to the translator, calls, the Find My Phone function and many others, both built-in and self-downloaded applications.

Autonomous work

We have already mentioned the independence of the watch from the phone, but it is worth talking about this in more detail. If you decide to go for a run, but do not want to take your phone with you, Watch 2 will let you do it. You can leave your smartphone at home and receive calls and answer SMS using your watch while on the other side of the city.

Already many foreign operators have supported the idea of connecting one number to 2 cards, just with the goal of introducing the ability to interact with the same number on different devices (in this case, on a smartphone and on a smart watch at the same time). Therefore, if this is implemented in the near future in Russia, Huawei Watch 2 will be ready for this.

Sports and Huawei Watch 2

For real athletes, and especially runners, the Huawei Watch 2 will be just right. We have already said above that the lower button is responsible for launching sports opportunities, but what are these sports opportunities?

The Huawei Watch 2 is just perfect for health-conscious people. First, an accurate heart rate sensor that analyzes your condition at a continuous pace. It can even determine the amount of oxygen consumed by examining the heart rate.

For lovers of walking and running, the watch is an indispensable assistant: it controls your speed, pace, and breathing, correcting you throughout your "marathon". If the user does not pursue the goal of running, but wants to be aware of his condition and preparation, then regardless of you, Watch 2 records all your steps.

At the end of the day, you can just see the report - how many steps were taken in the whole day? How many calories were burned, etc. But for maximum accuracy of indicators, you need to correctly fill in the fields of weight, height, etc. This is done only once after which the data will be recorded until the owner himself resets it.

Where can you buy

Conclusion

Given that the era of smartwatches has just begun to emerge, we can safely say that Huawei is off to a good start. The Watch 2 has everything a smartwatch needs: good battery life, 4G support, adequate pairing with most smartphones, and a full range of sports options.

At the same time, their popularity will not be limited to a specific target audience, Huawei has made a product that is perfect for both athletes and people who value stylish and high-quality gadgets.

If we talk about competitors, then we could mention the Apple Watch 2, but if you look objectively, this is a completely different OS that is intended only for iPhone owners. Therefore, the main competitor can be called a smart watch from the Korean giant Samsung - Gear S3. Both models are a bit similar in appearance, the same classic round look, and the straps themselves have something in common. The functionality of the devices is almost identical.
