Why does the error occur?

When you try to open a document, you will see a notification on the screen that the application cannot read the file due to the fact that it is damaged. Let's say right away: this can happen even if you did nothing with the document and worked as usual. Typically, something from this list happens:

  1. The document contains a large number of tables, figures and formulas. An error when opening a Word file may occur if, for some reason, the codes of these elements were written incorrectly (in other words, the program cannot understand what should be shown at all).
  2. The problems are related to various formatting elements. For example, with those that were created using additional applications and add-ons on another computer.
  3. The file was not saved correctly (in the wrong format).

Document recovery using Word

Few people know that Microsoft's text editor itself has a function to fix corrupted files. Therefore, if a Word error occurs when trying to open a file, first of all it is worth trying to restore the document using standard means. What do I need to do?

  1. Close the error message window.
  2. Launch "Word" from the "Start" menu or by using a shortcut on the desktop.
  3. Go to the menu File> Open and find through the "Explorer" the document that you want to restore. Please note that you do not need to open it!
  4. Highlight the file.
  5. Find at the bottom of the window, next to the "Open" button, an arrow button.
  6. A drop-down list will appear on the screen. In this case, we are interested in the "Open and Restore" item.

Now, if all is well, the document will open and display in standard mode.

An important nuance: you will also see a message on the screen stating that some changes were made to the content during the recovery process. By clicking on the "Show fixes" button, you will see a list of changed items. Be sure to see what the program has fixed in order to manually correct the file later.

Restore with a backup converter

It's great if you have this little utility installed on your computer. This means that when the document is stored in memory, it is also backed up. And now we will try to extract the undamaged version of the document:

  1. Launch the editor from the start menu.
  2. Select from the menu File> Open.
  3. At the bottom of the window that opens, there will be a list of "File types" (to the left of the "Cancel" button). Click on the arrow and open a list of all options.

Removing Microsoft Word add-ins

Sometimes the problem is not related to a specific document, but to the program in general. In practice, an error when opening a Word file often occurs due to installed add-ins. In this case, the message "Program terminated" is displayed on the screen.

Our task is to disable all add-ons, including the one that causes errors. For this you need:

  1. Launch MS Word. Most likely, there will be a message on the screen stating that a serious error occurred during the last launch, and the program will offer to start the editor in safe mode. Click "OK".
  2. Go to the menu File> Options.
  3. Go to the "Add-ons" tab.
  4. At the bottom of the window, you will see the words "Manage: COM Add-ins". Click on the "Go to ..." button next to it.
  5. In the window that appears, check the boxes next to all add-ons, then click "Delete" and confirm the action.

After that, you need to close the program and try to open the problem document again.

Format recovery

In many cases, the error when opening a Word 2003-2013 file is due to incorrect saving. To open the document, you have to restore the correct format.

Let's try to transfer the working information into a new, undamaged document:

  1. Create a new empty file in the "Word" and save it.
  2. Close the program and go to "Explorer".
  3. Find the created file and turn it into an archive by changing the extension (for this you just need to rename the document and enter .zip instead of.doc).
  4. Do the same with the file you want to recover.
  5. Open documents with any archiver.
  6. Extract the "word" folder from the damaged document and copy it to the archive with a new document, replacing all files.
  7. Rename the file from .zip to .doc or .docx back.

Now try opening your document in Word. The program will display a message stating that it is damaged and will offer to restore it. After that, the screen will display the contents of your file.

Manual code editing

Immediately, we note that this option is suitable only for advanced users, at least with basic knowledge of HTML. When a Word error occurs when it tries to open a file, the message about it always contains information about which part of the document the problem is (line and column number). That is, if you get into the file's code, you can find and correct or delete this fragment. How to do it?

  1. Open the document as an archive (see the previous point).
  2. Find and extract
  3. Open the document in Notepad or Notepad ++. It is desirable for a text editor to keep track of the cursor position - showing row and column numbers.
  4. Find the snippet that is causing the error and edit it.
  5. Upload the updated document.xml to the archive instead of the old file. After that, open the document in Word.

Recovering a document using Word Recovery

In addition to Office tools, you can use special programs to fix text files. They use their own algorithms to extract information, so they can often cope with the task much better than standard tools. The most popular applications of this type are R-Word and Magic Word Recovery.

Before proceeding to fix the "broken" file, be sure to make a copy of it.

If you cannot recover the document in its native format (.doc or .docx), first try saving it as .rtf.

Sometimes, when restoring a table, a warning appears on the screen that the computer is out of memory. In this case, you need to close all programs, folders and files, except for the "Word" itself.

When you create or open a document in Office 2016 (Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word), the program immediately closes.

Actually, the same happened to me - they cut off the electricity for a couple of minutes when I was preparing one of the articles for publication on this site (and this is how the topic for this article was born). And so, let's look at some simple ways to recover unsaved Word documents.

Method number 1: automatic recovery in Word

Whatever happens: just a mistake, the computer rebooted abruptly (without even asking you about it), a failure at the substation and the light turned off at the whole house - the main thing is not to panic!

By default, Microsoft Word is smart enough and will automatically (in case of an abnormal shutdown, ie shutdown without the user's consent) try to restore the document itself.

In my case, Micrisift Word after "abrupt" shutdown of the PC and turning it on (after 10 minutes) - after launching it offered to save not saved docx documents. The picture below shows how it looks in Word 2010 (in other versions of Word the picture will be similar).

Important! Word prompts you to recover files only on the first restart after a crash. Those. if you opened Word, closed it, and then decide to open it again, it will no longer offer you anything else. Therefore, I recommend that at the first start, save everything that is required for further work.

Method 2: via auto-save folder

Earlier in the article, I said that Word is smart enough by default (emphasis added). The program, if you have not changed the settings, automatically saves the document every 10 minutes in the "backup" folder (in case of unforeseen situations). It is logical that the second thing to do is to check if there is a missing document in this folder.

How do I find this folder? I will give an example in Word 2010.

Click on the "file / parameters" menu (see screenshot below).

This can happen for a variety of reasons: viruses, accidental deletion (especially since Windows 8, for example, does not ask if you really want to delete the file if you click the Delete button), disk formatting, etc.

After scanning (by the way, during it it is better not to touch the PC at all and close all other programs), the program will show us all types of files that can be recovered.

And she supports them, I must say, in large numbers:

Archives (rar, zip, 7Z, etc.);

Video (avi, mpeg, etc.);

Documents (txt, docx, log, etc.);

Pictures, photos (jpg, png, bmp, gif, etc.), etc.

Actually, all you have to do is choose which files to restore, press the appropriate button, specify a drive other than scanning, and restore the files. This happens quickly enough.

By the way, after recovery, some of the files may become unreadable (or not completely readable). The Date Recovery program itself warns us about this: files are marked with circles of different colors (green - the file can be restored in good quality, red - "there are chances, but not enough" ...).
