Mac mini monitor won't turn on. Macbook won't turn on

In a previous article, I wrote about the steps to take. I think it will be fair if a similar article appears about the MacBook.

After all, what could be worse than the situation, when your MacBook won't boot, and you clearly realize that all your information remained on it, on the accumulation of which hundreds of working hours were spent.

In this article, I will outline an emergency plan when your MAC flatly refused to start. It is not at all necessary to perform absolutely all of the listed actions. But you still need to act.

If your MacBook won't boot or freezes on boot, this could be due to:

  • hardware problem (hdd, memory, controller, processor, etc.);
  • OS X issue (like upgrading to El Capitan)
  • recently installed equipment(disconnect all USB devices)

As with the iPhone that won't turn on, the first step is to make sure that the MacBook battery isn't drained or the charging is damaged.

If, nevertheless, something is displayed on the screen, or even the boot process begins (which eventually freezes on a spinning disk or stops altogether), you should try to follow the steps described below in the order they follow.

  • If your MacBook is frozen and requires a restart -
  • It is necessary to create bootable USB drive with OS X? -
  • After updating OS X MAC hangs on white screen -
  • More about different modes downloads written -
  • You do not know what the screen that appeared when loading the MAC means -

STEP 1: Boot into Safe Mode (Safe Boot)

First you should try to boot your MacBook into safe mode, which limits the checks and loadable functionality performed by the poppy at startup. I do not guarantee that after starting in this mode, your MAC will suddenly start working as before, but it's still worth trying.

Shut down your MacBook and then turn it on while holding down the shift key. Booting in Safe Mode can take a long time (if the computer boots at all), so be patient.

If you want to know what exactly happens when booting in safe mode, you can boot your MacBook by holding down shift + Command + V, which in turn will launch safe mode + verbose mode on the MAC.

Verbose mode- this is an optional boot mode of the operating system (including OS X, Windows, Linux), in which detailed information about the loaded drivers is displayed on the screen, software and processes occurring at the time of computer boot.

Be patient and considerate during MacBook boot... If your computer does boot into Safe Mode, try simply restarting it from the Apple Top Menu.

If the MacBook boots now in the usual way, we will assume that the situation has been fixed and now everything is fine. If the MacBook does not boot, proceed to the next step.

STEP 2: Download Disk Utility

There can be a ton of reasons why your MacBook freezes at startup. But let's check now and then discard or try to fix the cause associated with malfunctioning hard disk of your MAC. The most in an easy way checks hard disk is the launch Disk Utilities(Disk Utility).

The first step is to turn off your MAC. If MacBook stuck on a gray (white, blue, pink ...) screen with a spinning disk, you need to force it (the computer) to shut down. To do this, press and hold the power button for 5-8 seconds.

To start Disk Utility, you need to get into OS X recovery mode. To do this, hold down the Command + R combination when turning on the computer.

If everything went well, you will be taken to a screen with the title MAC OS X Utilities(see the picture below). On this screen, click on " Disk Utility"(Disk Utility).

Then click on the name of the built-in hard drive in the left side of Disk Utility and start the verification process by clicking on Verify Disk in the lower right side of the screen. Wait for the end of the check.

If any faults are found, you will be prompted to fix them. Confirm your intentions by clicking on Repair Disk... After that, try restarting your MacBook again.

STEP 3: Target Disk Mode

As the saying goes, "it is better to have a titmouse in your hands than a crane in the sky." How are you doing with your data backups? Well, those data that were stored on your MacBook ... And now it does not start ... Sadness!

If the loss of data on a MacBook does not scare you, go straight to the next step. But if you are now in a cold sweat trying to remember whether you copied anything of value to other disks or flash drives, then here's another gift from Apple - EXTERNAL DISK MODE.

Target Disc Modespecial treatment downloads unique to computers MAC, which allows you to access hard disk your computer without booting into OS X.

Using this mode, you can save data when your MacBook does not boot for any reason.

To start external disk mode and access the contents of the hard MacBook disk we do this:

  1. Find another MAC computer. If you don't personally, ask your friends
  2. Connect both macs with a Thunderbolt cable
  3. Turn off your MAC. If necessary, hold down the POWER button for more than 5 seconds
  4. Hold down the T button immediately after turning on the MacBook and hold it until appears on blue screen Thunderbolt icons.

You just started Mode External Drive ... This mode, roughly speaking, turns your MAC into external hard disk. If everything went smoothly, your friend's MAC in Finder will display an additional external HDD... Now copy and save whatever you need.

When you're done with the disc, you'll need to eject it in Finder like any other device. After that, disconnect the Thunderbolt cable and turn off your MAC computer (by holding the power button for more than 5 seconds).

STEP 4: Reinstall OS X

If none of the previous steps brought "relief", all that remains is to reinstall operating system OS X. To do this, you need to boot the computer in recovery mode again, well, remember as in step 2. To do this, turn on the computer with Command + R held down.

Wait for OS X Utilities to load and select from the list Reinstall OS X... Follow the instructions on the screen to complete reinstallation operating system.

If your MAC has not mastered OS X installations or has been running on a fresh OS for a short time, most likely your MAC has some more serious problems.

Such problems can arise due to recently installed new hardware (memory, hard disk, etc.). Check the new hardware for compatibility with your computer.

If you haven't installed anything in your MAC, you need to check the existing modules (hard disk controller, memory modules, etc.). But it is better to entrust such checks to the specialists of the service center.

Fair, not overpriced or understated. There should be prices on the Service website. Necessarily! without "asterisks", it is clear and detailed, where it is technically possible - the most accurate, final.

If your Macbook won't turn on - that's not a reason to worry. According to Macrepublic service center specialists, every second Apple laptop, which suddenly turned off and does not want to turn on, is easily resuscitated at home.

Our advantages

Let's take a closer look at how this happens.

Check Monitor

First of all, you need to exclude a malfunction of the display. The Macbook Pro screen may not turn on and the rest of the system may be working properly. If during startup you hear the fan noise, the indication works and the OS boot melody is heard, but the screen remains black, then it is hidden in it. Only the service center can fix the problem.

Check power

The most common reason that Pro, Air, Retina, Macbook will not turn on is the lack of power. Therefore, if such problems arise, perform the following actions:

Check the power cord connections to the adapter and outlet.

Make sure the outlet is working.

Recheck the cord and adapter on other devices.

Check the integrity of the charging plug. Clean it from dust and debris.

Eliminate the likelihood of battery failure

Other ways to turn on your Macbook

Failure of the controller or memory modules can also prevent the Macbook from turning on. A reboot and a complete power off for 10 seconds will help to fix the failure.

If Pro, Air, Retina, Macbook does not turn on, you can try resetting the system management controller. A reset is performed by synchronously pressing the Option, Control, Shift, and Power keys. In this case, the power cord must be connected to the laptop, and the buttons are released at the same time. After that, you can try to turn on the MacBook again.

Another way to proceed if the Macbook Pro screen does not turn on is to restart the PRAM / NVRAM. The restart is performed by pressing and holding the Power, Option, R and P buttons until the black screen turns gray and a reboot occurs.

A power surge or a power failure can also cause your MacBook not to turn on. Power control is carried out by "Power Manager", it also blocks the inclusion of the laptop. The following actions will help to disable the manager's action: When the MacBook overheats, a shutdown is also observed. You can turn on the device only after complete cooling.

    • disconnect the gadget from the network;
    • remove the battery;
    • press the "Power" key and hold for 5-10 seconds;
    • put the battery back;
    • try turning on the laptop again.
  1. When the MacBook overheats, a shutdown is also observed. You can turn on the device only after complete cooling.

If Pro, Air, Retina, Macbook does not turn on after the update, boot is performed in safe mode, holding down the "Shift" button during startup.

Apple computers are highly reliable, but their owners sometimes run into trouble. Let's figure out what needs to be done in the event that the MacBook does not turn on. If you didn't manage to flood your laptop and drop it on the floor, the problem can most likely be solved without going to a service center.

First, you should perform an external check to ensure that your monitor and power adapter are working properly. The first applies more to the owners of Mac Mini and all-in-one iMacs. Laptop computers manufactured prior to 2016 use the MagSafe magnetic port for charging. Its power cord is equipped with an indicator light.

When properly connected, it should be solid orange or green. The L-shaped magnetic latch can work even if the contacts did not have time to connect. In this case, the power cord is externally connected, but power is not supplied due to a slight tilt. T-shaped latches last generation do not have such a disadvantage. Make sure MagSafe is connected properly.

In all 12-inch models, and after 2016 - in MacBook Pro, a power supply unit with a USB-C connector is used, which does not have a light indication. MagSafe only stayed in Air. The cord of the new adapters has two identical connectors at the ends and connects to the laptop and the power supply through the port.

Unplug it on both sides and plug it back in. The adapter may automatically cut off the power supply if there is a power disturbance. To reset a triggered protection, unplug it for one minute. After turning it back on, the computer should start charging normally.

Reset NVRAM / PRAM

When the adapter is working properly, the power is on and the apple is glowing on the lid, but the screen is still black, then you will need to reset the NVRAM / PRAM.

  1. Turn off the computer completely by using the power button. Turn it on and immediately press the combination shown in the screenshot.
  1. We hold all the keys until the laptop starts to start by issuing sound signal downloads again. After the power on has gone well and we are logged in, we need to check for updates. Click on the apple logo located in the left corner in the menu bar. We select the marked item.
  1. On home page press the specified button to open the App Store.

The system will automatically check for updates. We install all available and, if necessary, update the OS to latest version High Sierra.

Resetting the SMC

The SMC is responsible for the power supply functions. These include battery management, response to closing and opening the lid, the operation of some system sensors and interaction with peripherals... In any case, if your Mac doesn't seem to be working properly, force restarting the controller might fix the problem.

For Aimak monoblocks and all Mini versions, it is enough to disconnect the power cord for 15 seconds. Wait at least another five seconds before switching on again. For laptop computers, which include all versions of "Air", "Pro" and 12-inch Retina, follow these steps.

  1. Turn off the device completely using the shown menu item.
  1. Unplug the power cord. Press the three keys indicated in the screenshot in the left corner simultaneously with the power button and hold for ten seconds. We plug back the power adapter and turn on the laptop.

As in the previous case, we check and install available updates OS.

Consequences of the upgrade

Apple has made it nearly impossible to upgrade its models in recent years. In previously released MacBooks, the user could independently replace the memory sticks. The operation is, in principle, simple, but requires correct selection modules. If after the upgrade the laptop starts beeping during the startup process, this indicates a problem with the new memory.

Signals in this case are given with a pause of five seconds. Depending on the model, this can be one repeating beep or a series of three consecutive beeps. The only way out of this situation is to reinstall old modules or buy suitable ones.

Finally

If resetting NVRAM and SMC didn't work for you, then your Mac is in serious trouble. The best solution will be an appeal to a certified service for professional diagnostics. Keep in mind that for a year from activation, your MacBook has a limited Apple warranty and some repairs can be done free of charge.

Video instruction

In the video below, you can see firsthand how the described operations are performed by a professional.

Let's not talk about Apple's reliability for the 100th time. Everything breaks down.

But this case is strange, almost paranormal - at least, it seems so when it happens to you.

Given: new MacBook in excellent condition and without repair. Sit, work behind him. Suddenly once - it turned off. Without warning, the screen went out and the power went out.

You try to turn it on, but it doesn't respond at all. No way. Long press the power button, connect the charging cable, change charger... Just zero reaction.

Do not rush to go to the service just yet. And in general, do not rush. Perhaps this problem can be solved right now.

I faced Mac suddenly shutdown 2 times in 1 week

I believe in randomness, so I think I was just "lucky." But any of you can be in this place.

A week ago, a colleague of mine experienced the above issue on his MacBook Pro. The computer just turned off out of the blue and no longer showed any signs of life. I tried different chargers, cables, open and close the lid. Useless.

A few days later, the situation repeated itself with me and the 12-inch MacBook. Only the circumstances are different.

I didn't have a sudden shutdown. The MacBook had 2% battery remaining when it went out. I didn't think anything bad, I put it in my bag and forgot it. In the evening I put it on charge.

I open it in the morning, try to turn it on - zero reaction.

The laptop just seemed completely dead. It's a strange feeling - there was just a computer, and now a piece of metal with buttons. And it seems that you are not to blame.

If something like this happens to you, do not despair: it is most likely a failure of the SMC controller.

What is an SMC controller, why is it needed?

Literally, SMC stands for System Management Controller, that is, system management controller.

This is a chip on motherboard, which solves several specific problems. Quoting Apple's official website, SMC is responsible for:

  • reaction to pressing the power button
  • reaction to opening and closing the display lid on Mac laptops
  • battery resource management
  • temperature control
  • the operation of the sudden movement sensor (SMS)
  • ambient light sensor operation
  • keyboard backlight
  • status indicator control
  • battery status indicators
  • Select an external (instead of internal) video source for individual iMac displays.

SMC controllers are included in all MacBooks with Intel processors... Under ideal operating conditions, they function without problems.

But for some, SMC may start to get stupid. The reason not to guess and diagnose at home. These can be problems after an unsuccessful update or system restore from backup, or power surges when recharging the battery. Or something else.

If it is extremely difficult to determine the cause of an SMC controller failure, then you will notice the problems themselves almost immediately.

Referring again to the official Apple website for a list of situations requiring a reset of the SMC controller:

  • The computer fans rotate with high speed although the computer is not heavily loaded and properly ventilated.
  • The keyboard backlight is not working properly.
  • The status light (if present) is not lit correctly.
  • Battery lights (if present) do not work correctly on Mac notebook computers with a non-removable battery.
  • The display backlight does not respond correctly to changes in ambient light.
  • My Mac doesn't respond when I press the power button.
  • The Mac notebook does not respond correctly to closing or opening the lid.
  • Your Mac suddenly goes to sleep or shuts down and cannot be turned on.
  • The battery is not charging properly.
  • Your MacBook or MacBook Pro won't charge through the built-in USB-C port.
  • MacBook or MacBook Pro does not recognize external devices connected to its built-in USB-C port.
  • The MagSafe power adapter LED (if equipped) does not correctly display the current charging status.
  • Your Mac is unusually slow despite not being overly CPU intensive.
  • A Mac that supports Target Display Mode does not switch to Target Display Mode or back as expected, or switches unexpectedly.
  • Illumination around the I / O ports on Mac computer Pro (Late 2013) does not activate when you move your computer.

Okay, huh? Reading this list in its entirety makes you want to immediately reset the SMC settings on your Mac, no matter how it works. Suddenly it gets better.

Fortunately, the SMC reset procedure is safe, non-deleterious, and often used in service centers Apple as a first step in addressing owner complaints. No data or settings will be lost. All files will be in place.

As you might guess, it is reset SMC helped me and a colleague to revive our MacBooks. Only the procedure was not as simple as it was described on the Apple website.

How do I reset SMC on my Mac?

If you have a MacBook with a non-removable battery: turn off your MacBook (if it is on), hold down the CMD (command) + Option (alt) + Shift keys on the left side of the keyboard, and the power button with your other hand. Keep it all pressed for 10 seconds, then release. Turn on your Mac as usual.

If your MacBook has a removable battery: throw it out, it's time to upgrade. Okay, seriously, you need to turn off the beech, remove the battery from it, hold down the power button for five seconds, then release it, insert the battery pack back and turn on the laptop normally.

If you have a desktop Mac, iMac, and Mac mini: turn it off, take out the power cable, wait 15 seconds. Insert the cable back. Wait another 5 seconds, turn it on as usual.

If you have i Mac Pro: turn off, hold down the power button for 8 seconds, release it for 2 seconds and then just press.

Mac computers do not report that the SMC settings have actually been reset. If your problem persists, although it is mentioned in the reasons for resetting, try again. Once again.

Damn it, try ten times. Because for some unknown reason, it rarely happens the first time.

Personally, about the sixth attempt brought me success. The Mac suddenly turned on, started charging, and generally behaved as if nothing terrible had happened.

What if resetting the SMC didn't work and the Mac still won't turn on?

I highly recommend trying to reset the SMC at least five times. This observation is confirmed by numerous topics in Western forums. For some reason, the keyboard shortcut window is very small in newer MacBooks.
