Windows 10 is not installed on the MBR drive. Windows installation to this disc is not possible - GPT sections style

Before starting installing Windows 10 on the GPT disk (on a new computer on which the motherboard is standing, which supports the modern API called UEFI), it is necessary to deal with the basic concepts to appear to appear with what has to deal with.

By purchasing a new computer / laptop that supports UEFI, it is strongly recommended to immediately convert its hard disk table in GPT due to the mass of the advantages that we consider below, and then install Windows 10 and copy any data on it.

What do all these abbreviations mean

To change the outdated API, which ensured the interaction of the operating system with the hardware and passed the first brarative management after initializing the equipment, the UEFI interface came.

The features of the UEFI, which are important for the user Windows 10 are:

  • supporting the GPT sections scheme - talk about it further;
  • availability of services, one of which is required to download Windows 10, and the second is used in Linux for storing dumps, where information about the problems arising from the last completion of the PC is recorded;
  • modular architecture - here is implemented to install your own (downloaded from the Internet) drivers in UEFI. We need, for example, to access the file system on a computer without an installed operating system;
  • supports hard or logical drive encrypted on the hardware level;
  • UEFI is characterized by high speed compared to BIOS;
  • it works only in 32 and 64-bit mode, without supporting the functioning in 16-bit;
  • integrated download manager - can add their own boot menu items.

GPT is a new standard for placing file tables on physical media that came as a replacement of the MBR. Unlike the predecessor released in the mass in the distant 1983 year, GPT supports any hard disk, the volume of which exceeds 2 TB (when using MBR, it is not enough of the address space to address all sectors), can work with more than 4 active volumes and 128 sections on one physical media. Also GPT stores multiple boot data copies in various sections of the section, which way, using this file storage standard, you are much faster to restore damaged boot sectors.

Preparation of the drive

Installing the operating system on a hard disk always begins with due preparation. In our case, this is loading the suitable image and its deployment on the flash drive. Consider the process with the calculation that ISO is on the computer, and the RUFUS application of the latest version has already been launched.
Rufus will be used due to the ease of use and lack of unnecessary menu parameters.

  • Select a flash drive that will act as a Windows 10 distribution medium.
  • In the second drop-down menu, we definitely select GPT for PCs with UEFI.
  • The file system and the cluster volume is better not to change - to install the operating system, these parameters do not matter.
  • Activate the quick format option so as not to wait a tet of minutes.
  • We put the checkbox near "Create a boot disk" and click on the disk icon.
  • Select an image with a Windows 10 distribution and press "Start".

Windows 10 allows you to convert the MBR-section to GPT and with the standard "Disk Management" tool.

  • You can call it through the execution of the "diskmgmt.msc" command or the Start context menu.

  • We highlight each drive of the hard drive and delete it using the context menu.

  • Through the context menu of the hard drive, call the "Convert to GPT" command.

Note that it will be active after removing all volumes, and if the Windows running Windows is not on the media, the table of which you want to convert.

Team "Convert to GPT disk"

Conversion will take a dozen second seconds if the disk does not have damaged sectors. After that, the disk breakdown and install Windows 10 on its active section becomes available.

Problems with installation

If the "Dozens" installation on the hard disk stopped the appearance of an error that the installation of Windows 10 in the UEFI system is not possible to continue to convert GPT to the MBR. The problem faces most users who have not completed the transformation before starting the OS installation.

This is done using a set of commands performed through the command line.

  • To convert the disc, you need to restart the computer, and in the installation program, when the Installation button appears, click "System Restore".

Keep in mind that the execution of the instructions in the next step will clean your hard disk from all information and converts the tables of its partitions to the new GPT standard with the inability to restore anything stored on the hard drive before conversion.

  • After opening the commander time, we sequentially enter the following chain of system commands in it:
  • diskpart - launch utility to work with sections;
  • list Disk - visualization of the list of volumes in order to choose a future system disk for conversion;
  • sELECT DISK X - selection of the desired volume;
  • clean - cleaning the active partition under the number x;
  • convert MBR - converting the MBR section;
  • cREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE XXXXXXX - Create a new partition specified in the volume bytes;

When entering the size of the volume, consider that 1 GB \u003d 1024 megabytes, so to obtain a 50 GB disk, it is necessary to multiply twice by 1024.

  • active - we make it active;
  • format FS \u003d NTFS Quick - Perform quick formatting in NTFS;
  • assign - the disk will wear an alphabet label of the first free letter of the English alphabet, starting with "D";
  • eXIT - exit from the Windows 10 command line.
  • Click "update" to re-obtain fresh information about the disk and its sections.

If the installation of Windows 10 to the GPT section was not implemented, and a familiar window appeared, it is additionally necessary to perform several conditions:

  • a 64-bit system should be installed;
  • computer need to be included in U mode

Most likely the installation of "dozens" is impossible due to the second factor.

  • To solve it, it is necessary to go to the UEFI, which is carried out mainly by the F2 keys (for a laptop) or DEL (for PC).
  • We find and activate (set the value as "enable") the UEFI load function.

Usually, it is located in the Bios Features section or BIOS Setup.

  • We switch the SATA function in AHCI instead of IDE mode. Most often, the change in this option is not required, but check just in case.

  • Save new settings.

In various versions of UEFI, settings can be located in different sections and even wear different names.

After that, the installation of Windows 10 to the section with a new file layout standard is carried out as the usual installation "dozens".

When installing the new Windows 10 operating system, users may encounter a refusal to install, which is accompanied by the message that the selected disk has GPT sections style.

How, in this case, convert the MBR disk in GPT and on the contrary when installing Windows 10?

What is the type of disk partitions to select for Windows 10?

If during the installation of Windows 10, the selected disk gives an error that concerns the correctness of the selection style selection of the device, it is first to determine the topical version of the volumes for your PC. There are two ways to determine:

  • If you have a new computer with UEFI interface, then when you enter the BIOS settings, you can control the mouse, and not just the keyboard. The graphical interface is color, not blue with white letters. In this case, you need to correctly install Windows 10 on the GPT disk.
  • If you have the old computer and you have changed components for a long time, the BIOS has a standard blue interface, you will need to convert GPT style in the MBR and only after that it will be possible to install Windows 10 on a hard disk.

Installing Windows 10 to the GPT disk with the UEFI interface

Running Windows 10 installation on the GPT disk is a complex process. To fulfill it, you need to adhere to two recommendations, namely:

  • Installing the 64-bit version of the system.
  • To execute the first condition, you need to make changes to the BIOS UEFI settings. To do this, reboot the PC and continuously press "F2" or "DEL" (there may be other keys, which depends on the model of the motherboard). Next, we carry out the following recommendations:

    • Go to the Bios Features or BIOS Setup section. Test download from UEFI, not with CSM.

    • In SATA mode, specify instead of IDE, AHCI environment. Usually this setting is in the Peripherals section.

    • We save the changes and reboot the computer.

    After you have saved all changes, the computer will be ready to install Windows 10 and format partitions. Performing this process from the disk, the likelihood of error is low. If you use the drive for this purpose, you should write the image again so that it supports the UEFI interface.

    IMPORTANT! Create a USB flash drive in UEFI can only be for 64-bit versions of operating systems.

    You can create such a flash drive via a command line with administrator rights. To do this, perform the following actions. Click "Win + R" and enter "CMD".

    1. diskpart.
    2. lIST DISK.
    3. sELECT DISK.

    Select a flash drive to which the image of dozens will be recorded. We prescribe alternately following commands:

    1. sELECT DISK N.
    2. clean.
    3. cREATE PARTITION PRIMARY.
    4. format FS \u003d FAT32 Quick
    5. active.
    6. assign.
    7. list Volume

    After performing these actions, you need to mount the ISO image in the system by clicking on the file and selecting the "Connect" item. Next, select the contents of the virtual disk and send it to the USB flash drive.

    Now install Windows 10 C flash drive or disk.

    How to convert GPT to MBR to install Windows 10

    If the installation of Windows 10 and format sections appears a refusal due to the inconsistency of the GPT style, you must convert the disk without UEFI in the MBR.

    At the selection selection stage during the installation of the operating system, you should perform the following steps:

    • Press "SHIFT + F10". The command line opens. We enter "diskpart", and then - "List Disk" to display the list of connected drives.
    • Next, enter the SELECT DISK N, where n is the disk number that must be converted.
    • To clean the hard disk completely, enter "Clean". If you want to delete only partitions, use the "Detail Disk" commands, then SELECT VOLUME and DELETE VOLUME.
    • To convert, enter "Convert MBR".
    • To complete, enter "EXITE".

    If you converted partitions at the disc setup phase, you need to click the Update button. Further installation on the MBR will be launched in the usual mode and the error will not happen again.

    Hi friends! In this article, I once again want to touch on the topic of the GPT disk conversion in the MBR and on the contrary and correcting the error "Installing Windows to this disc is not possible because the disk is the MBR or GPT sections table."

    In principle, this problem has long been solved and already many know that to solve this problem you need to convert the GPT disk in the MRR well, or vice versa, depending on the situation. Article on how to do it on the Internet a lot, here for example, only on our site you can find instructions on through the command line and.

    In the same instruction, we are talking about another one, in my opinion, a very simple version of solving a problem with, about which few people mention. In this case, we will bypass without any manipulations with the conversion of sections, and we use the BIOS settings exclusively.

    We go around the error when installing Windows 10 on GPT or MBR

    The solution itself is elementary, it is necessary to simply boot from the flash drive in the appropriate mode or in Legacy, for MBR drives, or in UEFI, which is designed to set the system on GPT discs.

    How to choose one of the modes?

    We connect the boot flash drive, for example, to a computer and reboot it. Next go in Boot Menu., to get into which you can use the keys F8. , F9., F10., F12., It all depends on the manufacturer and the motherboard series. Also sometimes there is a launch of the boot menu using the key ESCIf you are sure to try this option.

    Well, usually, when you start a computer at the bottom of the screen, you can find various tips from the manufacturers themselves about what keys, which menu opens.

    Boot Menu.- This is a menu where you can quickly select the device from which will be loaded. In general, much easier and more convenient than constantly. So, when you see in the boot menu, you see that in the list, the name of the flash drives inserted by us is displayed twice, with the UEFI prefix and without it.

    This is the very most modes of which I said, now see if you have an error that the installation is not possible because the disk has the MBR sections style. In this case, choose an item with the usual name of the flash drive, without the UEFI console.

    Otherwise, if in the error it says that on the disk the style of the GPT sections, we should select an item in the boot menu in which the UEFI prefix is \u200b\u200bfaced before the name of the flash drive, it may look like this: " UEFI: Kingston 8GB Ultra».

    By the way, fans to activate Windows using activators, this installation method will not fit, you will have to convert the disk in the MBR otherwise it will not be possible to activate it.

    In general, after downloading in the correct mode of Windows 10, it must be established without problems both on MBR and on GPT sections. For Windows 7 or 8, all actions are similar to the "dozen" I just took as an example, so this method should work on all modern systems.

    No in the UEFI boot menu

    What to do those who have no point with UEFI in the boot menu? In this case, or not lucky, or you have to enable it in the BIOS settings.

    On some Materna UEFI, in principle, there is no, but sometimes there are disks on which the GPT sections are originally installed. In this case, again, you will have to turn to one of the options for the disk conversion.

    If you have a modern motherboard then you need to go to the BIOS and whether there is no parameter that will help you turn on the download from the UEFI. Example I will give my MSI motherboard and BIOS that is installed there.

    So most likely you will not find here specifically your model. But not trouble, just email me in the comments, the name and model of your mat fee and I will try to explain in detail how to act in your case. Just physically it is not realistic to give an example on all existing models.

    So, we went, reboot the computer and go to the BIOS with the F2 or the Delet key

    In Bios, go to section " Settings"And choose the item" Boot" In general, we need to partition the boot, on many motherboards this section is immediately in the navigation menu that is from above.

    At the next step, we allocate the item " Boot Mode Select."And press" ENTER ".

    In the window that opens, select the download mode in " Legacy + UEFI", Save the settings and leave the bios by pressing the" F10.».

    After that, you can easily select the desired mode in the boot menu.

    ASUS.

    In ASUS, these modes are enabled as follows. Once in the BIOS go to the section " Boot"And choose the item" CSM (Compatibility Support Module) " And already there in the parameter " Boot Device Control»Install the value" UEFI AND LEGACY OPROM».

    Gigabyte.

    In Gigabyte, go to the BIOS need to go to the section " Bios Features." And there descending to the parameter " BOOT MODE SELECTION»Choose" UEFI AND LEGACY OPROM».

    How to get around the problem with installing Windows 10 on GPT or MBR Sections

    Progress goes forward, the volumes of the information that we need to process are increasing, and the capacity of computer disks increases with them. Hard disks of more than 2 TB and with a large number of sections no one will not surprise anyone, but did the developers about the software for them taken care? Let's consider the formats of hard drives that are now used to store partitions and to load the operating system.

    What is the standards of hard disks MBR and GPT and what are their features

    Before starting to work with a hard disk or solid-state drive, it must be formatted, breaking into several logical partitions. The dimensions of the sections depend on how much space you need to take under the operating system and how much - for other programs and other files. After breakdown, the information is written in them according to a specific standard. At the moment, 2 standards are used - MBR and GPT.

    Externally hard drives of MBR and GPT standards often look equally

    Advantages and disadvantages of each standard

    MBR (home boot record) - This standard appeared in the early 80s with the DOS operating system. It includes a special program code, a set of data with information about the operating system and the table of the hard disk partitions. The MBR standard is simplicity, but is currently considered obsolete. Disks of this standard can work with BIOS, and with UEFI. Its main drawbacks are as follows:

    • the partition size cannot be more than 2.2 TB;
    • you can create no more than four major partitions on the hard disk;
    • the boot record of the operating system is stored in one specified place, which is possible both random overwriting and virus damage.

    GPT (or GUID partition table) is a new storage standard of the partition table, which was proposed by Intel to use with UEFI (expandable firmware interface). The feature of the GPT standard is to duplicate the table of contents and partition table.Compared to MBR, this standard has the following advantages:

    • supports the maximum volume of the section for the MBR standard;
    • on one hard disk, you can create a lot of sections (for Windows operating systems - up to 128);
    • due to the fact that the main boot record has a duplicate, it is easy to restore it during damage and it is almost impossible to accidentally overwrite or implement malicious code into it;
    • loading the Windows version of the Windows version 8 and the older passes much faster.

    How to find out the type of disk in a laptop or in a computer

    Consider how to determine the type of disk in a laptop or in a personal computer.

    Definition of the type of disk utility "Disk Management" utility

    In the Windows system, the easiest way is to determine the storage standard of the hard disk using the "Disk Management" utility.

    The main window of the "Disk Management" utility contains basic information about the disks installed in the computer

    In Windows 10, to start the utility you need to click on the right mouse button on the Start menu and select "Disc Control" in the context menu.

    In Windows 7, right-click on the computer icon. Next, select the Control menu item "Control", and in the Computer Management window - "Disk Management" section.

    Alternative way to start the "Disk Management utility": Press the Win + R key combination, and then enter the DiskMgMT.msc command in the "Run" window and press ENTER.

    Enter the diskmgmt.msc command to start the Disk Management utility

    We are waiting until the "Disk Management" utility will start. In the main window, all the disks and sections that are currently in the computer will be displayed. Right-click on the name of the disk you are interested in (it is located at the bottom of the Disk Management window), select "Properties" in the context menu and go to the TOMA tab.

    Select the desired disc, click on it with the right mouse button, open the context menu and select the "Properties" string in it.

    In the "Disc Information" section, you will see the "Section Style: Table with the GUID section (GUID)" or "section style: the main boot record (MBR)." The first option means that the disk has a GPT partition markup standard, and the second is that there is a main loading record of the MBR on the disk.

    For the GPT standard disk, the window looks like this:

    For a hard disk of the GPT standard, the "Table with GUID section" style is specified.

    And for the MBR standard disk - so:

    MBR Disk Holds the Style "Basic Boot Record (MBR)"

    Determining the type of disk using the command line

    The format of the marking of the hard disk partitions (GPT or MBR) can be defined using the command line. To do this, run the command line console on behalf of the administrator, enter the DiskPart command and press the ENTER key. After downloading the utility, enter the LIST DISK command and confirm the action of the Enter key.

    To view the hard disk list, execute the DiskPart command.

    Among the displayed parameters of the hard disks there is a GPT column. The disk that uses the GPT standard is marked in it as an asterisk. The remaining discs not marked with the stranger have marking of the MBR standards.

    Determining the type of disk using the Aomei Partition Assistant utility

    Aomei Partition Assistant Standard - free distributed utility for working with hard disks and solid-state drives in the Windows operating system. The program has an extensive functionality and can convert GPT disk formats in MBR and back.

    After starting the utility displays all the discs and logical partitions on them. At the bottom of the window called each disk, its type is shown: GPT or MBR.

    At the bottom of the Utility window, all the hard disks of the computer are shown with their types, as well as the logical partitions of each disk

    The methods described above will help you easily find out how a specific accumulator belongs to which standard.

    How to install Windows 10 to GPT or MBR

    Before you start installing the Windows 10 operating system on your personal computer, you need to figure out which firmware interface supports its motherboard. This can be an extensible UEFI firmware interface or BIOS base basic firmware interface. Then you should decide on the markup standard of the hard disk or solid-state drive. Installing Windows 10 starts with copying files from an installation media, which can be both flash drive and optical disk (CD) .

    Motherboard type definition: UEFI or BIOS

    Users often encounter the problem of determining the type of motherboard interface. Consider how to correctly recognize.

    BIOS is easy to distinguish from UEFI: it looks like old software and uses a small number of colors. Basically it is blue, black and white. Also in BIOS little settings and there is no possibility of selecting the download mode with UEFI and Legacy points.

    In the BIOS settings you can not select the download mode
    UEFI system interface looks more modern compared to BIOS

    Select the most suitable standard for installing Windows 10

    On new computers, the motherboard of which supports the UEFI system interface, it is recommended to install Windows 10 to a disk marked according to the GPT standard. This will exclude problems with data loss and will provide faster loading. Separately, it should be noted that if you need to install the second operating system, it can only be Windows version 8 and higher. Older systems will fail when loading.

    If the computer is old or you need to install two or more younger Windows 8 operating systems, then it is better to leave the disk MBR markup, but you will have to additionally configure the UEFI (as it should be described below). Remember that 32-bit versions of Windows operating systems do not support GPT standard.

    Preparation of installation media

    Before installing the operating system to the computer, we must prepare a media containing the necessary installation files. Suppose we have an image of an operating system in ISO format and an empty flash drive with a capacity of 8GB. To correctly recording the image image, it is recommended to use the RUFUS program. It does not have unnecessary settings that can mislead the user, perfectly adjusts the loading USB flash drive and avoids a multitude of errors when the data is not read or BIOS and UEFI cannot recognize them.

    Before starting the Windows image recording process, configure the necessary parameters in the program window.

    Creating an installation media consists of the following steps:

    • select a flash drive to which the operating system installation image will be recorded;
    • in the drop-down menu "Section", select the disk markup type (GPT or MBR) and the type of motherboard system interface (BIOS or UEFI);
    • in the File System menu, select FAT32, the cluster size parameter is left by default;
    • put the ticks at the "Quick Formatting" and "Create a boot disk" items;
    • select the ISO file image file and press the Start button.

    After the image recording is completed, we will receive a media that can now be used to install Windows on computers with the corresponding partition markup and the type of system interface.

    Installation using a classic BIOS to disk with MBR sections

    Installing the operating system using the BIOS interface to disk in the MBR format will not cause any problems. You only need to follow the following instructions:

    • turn off the computer and connect the installation media;
    • when you boot a computer, enter the BIOS, usually you need to press the F2 or DEL key;
    • find the BOOT tab and select the installation carrier as the primary loading device for downloading the 1st Boot Device;
    • save settings, reboot and follow the prompts on the classic installation of Windows.

    Select the device from which Windows will be installed.

    No more manipulations are required. When installing the operating system, you can format the disk if before it was any information.

    Installation using UEFI to disk with MBR sections

    When installing Windows 10, the UEFI means on the disk with the MBR sections of the MBR may occur. You will need a more subtle UEFI configuration, so if you can convert a disk to the GPT format, it is better to do it right away. For those who still want to leave the MBR disk format, you need to switch the boot mode from EFI to Legacy. For this:

    • in Boot Menu BIOS, select the download option from the USB media without UEFI in the title and in the download settings, move it to the first place;
    • in UEFI, instead of the EFI boot mode, set the Legacy or CSM mode.

    Select LEGACY download mode

    The installation carrier must have a MBR markup scheme. After performing these actions, the system considers it, and the installation will begin.

    Installing UEFI to disk with GPT sections

    Using UEFI to a GPT disk, you can install the Windows 10 operating system only 64-bit bit. The installation process using UEFI is not much different from the same process in the BIOS. Consider key points:

    • when loading a computer, go to UEFI, usually you need to press the F2 or DEL key on the keyboard, and proceed to the setting;
    • uEFI must be selected the UEFI Mode load mode and the Secure Boot mode is enabled;
    • in the BOOT tab in the first place there must be an installation medium.

    Turn on the Secure Boot mode in the download settings

    The hard disk to which the operating system will be installed must have a GPT markup, otherwise it will have to be converted to this format. On the problems associated with the conversion of a hard disk markup, let's talk below.

    How to change the type of hard disk markup

    There are various methods to change the standard of the hard disk, but it is worth remembering that converting almost always leads to data loss, even if the program promises to leave data safe and safety. Therefore, before starting the operation, save all important information on another disk or copy to external devices.

    Windows installation problems on a specific type disk

    The main problem with installing the Windows 10 operating system is to receive notifications about the impossibility of continuing or start setting.

    Error message when performing conversion from MBR in GPT appears before installing Windows

    When installing Windows, the following typical errors are possible:

    • errors related to system size: 32-bit operating system is not suitable for installation on the GPT disk;
    • installation media malfunction or incorrect information recording on it: You need to use another media or overwrite the current;
    • for the UEFI mode, the media containing the UEFI is not selected, and vice versa - for the BIOS media with UEFI in the title;
    • the installation media loader is not formatted in the format: the format must coincide with the type of hard disk or solid-state drive.

    Changing the disk format via the command line

    One of the fastest disk conversion options from one format to another is considered to be converted using the command line utilities. Suppose you need to convert the MBR format disk in GPT. Attention: all information that is contained on the disk will be deleted. This option can be successfully completed during the installation of the operating system. After downloading the Windows Installer, press the SHIFT + F10 key combination, as a result of which the command line opens in which you need to enter and execute the following commands:

    • diskpart (will start the disk control utility);
    • list DISK (a list of disks will be displayed on the screen, you need to remember the disk number (n), where the operating system will be installed);
    • sELECT DISK N (Select N);
    • clean (Clean the selected disk);
    • convert GPT (convert a Disk to GPT format);
    • eXIT (output from the disk management utility).

    Enter the command sequentially to convert the disk format by waiting for each of them.

    Changing the format using Windows Disc Control Utility

    This type of conversion requires the installed and operating Windows operating system version 7 and older. Suppose you need to convert the disk from the GPT format in the MBR. This will require the "Disk Management" utility, which we have considered above. Make the following:

    Select and run the "Convert to MBR drive" function

    Programs for converting between GPT and MBR formats

    In addition to the standard tools embedded in the Windows operating system, there are various third-party programs to convert disk formats. Among them, you can select the Acronis Disk Director and Minitool Partition Wizard utilities. They allow you to convert a format without data loss. We will discern more Minitool Partition Wizard.

    Select the download mode MINITOOL PARTITION WIZARD

    Create a bootable drive with the MiniTool Partition Wizard utility and boot from it. Please note that the Secure Boot mode must be disabled in the UEFI. After the download is complete, select the desired hard disk and click on the Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disk line, which is located on the left in the Operations tab. Then press the Apply button and wait for the end of the operation, which can last for quite a long time.

    Select a disk and run the conversion of the Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disk command

    Sometimes the program cannot convert the system disk, the corresponding warning is displayed. To solve this problem you need:

    • select a section in which the operating system loader is located (it is usually located at the very beginning of the list and takes up to 500MB);
    • remove it and create on this place the same partition in the FAT32 file system;
    • repeat the transformation actions described above.

    Third-party programs open additional opportunities in working with hard and solid-state discs. In particular, they allow you to convert them to MBR and GPT formats without losing data if the standard operating system functionality does not work or unavailable.

    Video: Working with hard disk sections in the program Minitool Partition Wizard

    It is impossible to say exactly which technologies better: tested by time, but technically obsolete MBR, or a new promising GPT. Both standards perform the same function: stored data on the operating system loading and the disc partition table. Each user must decide for himself that he needs from a hard disk, how many partitions and what volume will be on the disk and whether it requires a new level of security and reliability implemented in the GPT standard.

    One of the most common errors when installing the Windows operating system of various versions is an error with the following text: "The selected disk contains the MBR partition table."

    Most often, it can be seen when installing Windows 8 and Windows 10. As for Windows 7, this error occurs at times less often, but still there.

    At least, on the forums you can find posts where people write about the occurrence of this error when installing the seventh version of Windows.

    It looks all as shown in Figure No. 1.

    In any case, the reasons and paths of solving such a problem are always the same. Take about it and talk.

    Why error occurs

    The fact is that most modern windows have an interface between the operating system and iron, called EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface).

    To be clearer, you can see Figure 2. It can clearly see where this is the most EFI in the computer's hierarchy and what it does.

    Accordingly, only EFI applies in Windows 8 and Windows 10. The same can be said about some of the latest versions of Windows 7.

    Although most of them use the usual BIOS.

    So, in systems with EFI, the standard format format is used on the hard disk partitions called GPT, and in systems with BIOS - MBR.

    It is logical that if earlier the Windows XP was standing on the computer or most of Windows 7 versions, a standard BIOS was used there with MBR format tables.

    When installing Windows 8 and Windows 10 on GPT, they do not automatically change.

    Yes, and just to take and change the BIOS on EFI or separate GPT on the MBR is impossible due to the involvement of the possibilities of the most familiar BIOS.

    Because of this, the error in question occurs. But it can be circumvented, and this is not so difficult.

    There are two ways for this. The first of them is to simply convert its disc from the MBR system in GPT.

    And the second is more cunning - to switch the loading mode from the EFI described above on Legacy.

    In this mode, all issues with compatibility will be solved automatically.

    Such a regime, if you say in common, simply ignores all sorts of problems like the malfunction of the format of the partition table. Consider each of these ways to step by step.

    Method 1. Conversion of MBR in GPT

    You can convert table disk table format in two ways with data loss and without it.

    That is, the first option implies that the disk to which the operating system will be installed will simply be completely cleaned.

    The second one implies full data saving.

    Without data saving

    So, to convert your disc from the MBR system into the GPT system, you must do the following:

    • Already when the error in question occurs, as shown in Figure No. 1, you must press the SHIFT + F10 key combination. After that, the command line will appear.

    Prompt: If we are talking about a laptop, you may need to press more andFN., i.e Shift.+ Fn + F10. After that, the same command line will appear.

    • In the window that appears, you must enter the "List Disk" command (emphasized with the red line in Figure 2). After that, the table of all available disks will appear.
      Of these, you need to choose the one to which we are going to install a new operating system. The main thing in this case is to remember its number (in Figure 3, the rooms are highlighted by green ovals).

    • Select the desired disk (in this example, the disk with the number 0) is selected. This is done by entering the "Select Disk" command.

    • Clear the selected disc entering the only "Clean" command.

    • Convert the selected disk to GPT using the "Convert GPT" command.

    • Create a section using the Create Partition Primary command.

    • A bundle of a disk with the system using the "ASSIGN" command and output from entering the "EXIT" command.

    Now you can try again to establish a new operating system.

    With data saving

    As for the second method, there is a conversion system for the formation of data tables from MBR in GPT without data loss, only the command line and standard Windows facilities do not do here.

    Here you will need to use various third-party utilities for working with hard drives. One of the most famous among these is bootable.

    It applies free of charge. After reading the link, go to the "Download" section ("Download") and on the first product, click the "Local Download" button (the "FROM CNET" button is intended if the main does not work).

    To start it, you can simply log in and run the ISO file using the program like Daemon Tools, or record the downloaded image on the USB flash drive and download it when the system is started.

    If the second option is selected (and it will be optimal in this case), you need to take an empty flash drive, the standard Windows to reset the image downloaded from the above links and disable the Secure Boot function to it in the BIOS (EFI).

    To do this, restart the computer and immediately start pressing Delete or F2 (usually it is written in the boot screen, which should be pressed, try both options).

    Tip: Read on the Internet or in the instructions for your computer, how to go to the settingsBIOS (EFI). Perhaps there will be information and about the functionSecure Boot.

    After that, you should find a clause called "Secure Boot" or something similar to this (the name may differ depending on the manufacturer of the computer).

    For example, in the Acer laptops, you need to go to the Authentication menu, click on the "Secure Boot" menu and select the "disabled" option (highlighted in red).

    In other computers, the menu items will differ, but the search "Secure Boot" usually does not take more than five to ten minutes.

    In general, when Secure Boot is disabled, you can insert a USB flash drive with Minitool Partition Wizard Bootable and restart the computer.

    The program will boot.

    After that, it will only be left to click on the desired disk (to which the installation of the system will occur), which, as an example, is shown in Figure 11 shows a blue arrow.

    The selection in this case is made by simply pressing the desired disk.

    After that, click on the "Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disk" command, the location of which can be seen on the same figure (emphasized the red line).

    After that, you will need to follow all the instructions of the program, click "Apply" and wait a bit, there is nothing complicated there.

    There may be a problem with the fact that the user will try to convert the system disk. Solution This problem is to remove the boot partition of the disc.

    This section stores the files required for download.

    Since we gathered to reinstall the system, we no longer need it all, so you can delete it. Minitool Partition Wizard Bootable is done very simple.

    First you need to click on this hard disk section.

    It weighs it usually quite a bit and find out it simply. After that, there will be more buttons at the top, where you will need to click "Delete".

    After that, you will need to select the same disk again and click on the "Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disk" command.

    Now you can turn off the program again and try to set the operating system on it.

    Method 2. Through the Legacy mode

    As mentioned above, this cunning mode allows you to simply ignore the emerging error and calmly set the desired operating system.

    To enable it, you need to go to BIOS (EFI).

    As mentioned above, it can be done by pressing the Delete button or F2 immediately after starting the OS boot.

    In the menu that appears, the Boot Mode item should be found, which is most often in the "BOOT" section. Figure 16 shows how this item may look like.

    Accordingly, to switch the mode, click on the selected "BOOT MODE" item (ENTER button on the keyboard, and it is selected by pressing the arrows).

    After that, in the drop-down window you need to select the item where the name "Legacy" will appear.

    This also is done by pressing the ENTER button on the keyboard. After that, from the system settings, you can also try to set a new operating system again.

    It is important to remember that the menu items in the BIOS (EFI) differ on various models are different, so it is better before climbing in such complex things, it is better to read about your model on the Internet, take into your hands the instructions or call the manufacturer's support service.

    In any case, the names of the above menu items practically do not change and can always be intuitively understood where which is located.
