Acer a501 tablet computer. Review Acer Iconia Tab A501 - honey pill

Tablet PC Acer Iconia tab A501

Tablet Acer Iconia Tab A501 is very often compared with the famous iPad tablet... Some with the first, and some with the second. Unfortunately, I have not had a chance to delve deeply into these wonderful devices, and the iPad for me is, as they say, “a thing in itself”. Therefore, I will not compare the Acer Iconia Tab A501 with its older brothers, but just tell you about this interesting gadget.

The device is assembled on the basis of a processor Nvidia Tegra 2 with a clock speed of 1 GHz and runs on the Android operating system.

Volume random access memory- 1 GB. Flash memory of the tablet, depending on the configuration, can be 16, 32 and 64 GB. In our case, there are 16 GB, of which, roughly speaking, 12.5 GB is allocated to the user for work. The memory can be expanded with flash cards. Supports microSD cards up to 32 GB.

The computer is equipped with a capacitive display with a diagonal of 10.1 inches. Its resolution is 1280x800. The light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen. The presence of a Micro-HDMI connector also allows you to output the image to an external monitor or TV.

The viewing angles of the display are excellent, there is no other way to say it. The image is visible from any position. In addition, it stains noticeably less than its counterparts, and the left prints are easily wiped off with a light movement of a soft napkin. This, by the way, is rare, usually much more effort is required to clean the display.

The tablet has Wi-Fi, 3G and GPS modules "on board", so without communication you can only stay in completely remote places.

Two speakers located on the bottom of the device are responsible for sound reproduction. The manual also mentions two microphones with noise and echo cancellation. They are not visible visually, but there is certainly something there. This "something" records sound so disgusting that you wonder how the manufacturer put such rubbish in such a cool tablet. Looking ahead, I will say that this is the only serious drawback.

The gadget has two cameras at once. One of them, 2-megapixel, is located on the front side of the device and is intended primarily for network communication. The second, five-megapixel, is located on the bottom. It is equipped with an LED flash and is designed for photo and video shooting.

The dimensions of the tablet are 260x177x13.3 mm and weighs 768 g.

The body is made of metal and plastic. The bottom is slightly convex, making the gadget easy to handle from a flat surface.

On the upper part of the body there is a rocker for adjusting the volume and a switch that blocks the function of automatic screen rotation. There are also slots for installing a flash card and a SIM card, covered with a protective cover.

On the left side there is a power button, a headphone jack and a Micro-HDMI port.

Left view

On the right side there is a Reset button, a Micro-USB connector for synchronization with a computer (a Micro-USB / USB cable is included in the package), a network adapter and a USB connector to which you can connect external storage and other equipment such as a mouse, keyboard, or joystick.

Right view

On the bottom there is a connector for connecting the tablet to the docking station.

Bottom view

On the bottom there are two speakers and a camera with flash. Another camera, as mentioned earlier, is located on the front side. It is located to the left of the display, closer to the upper left corner. The location, of course, is not the best, because if you hold the tablet straight in front of you, the face in the resulting image turns out to be strongly shifted to the side.

The computer comes with the Android 3.0 operating system installed. When you first connect to the Internet, you will be prompted to update the software version, and if you are not very advanced user this operating system, I recommend doing this, since initially not everything is smooth on the tablet. For example, there are problems playing video from a USB drive and there is no way to safely remove it. In addition, the operating system will be updated immediately to version 3.2, which has a lot of advantages.

But if you are already a fairly experienced user, perhaps you should not rush to update, as in new version operating system, you will not be able to obtain superuser rights (root), allowing you to use the resources of the gadget to the fullest. However, there are several ways to return to old version firmware. (By the way, it is possible to bring the tablet back to life, even if your experiments have brought it to a state of "brick".)

Computer desktop

Desktop content is composed of various Acer widgets, shortcuts and content folders. Of course, the user can independently choose the widgets and shortcuts he needs and place them on the desktops, of which there are only five. To do this, you need to go to the screen settings. To do this, you need to click on the screen and hold it for a couple of seconds or click on the plus sign in the right upper corner display.

This is how widgets are added

To access installed applications, you must click on the inscription "Applications", which is also located in the upper right.

The Acer content folders contain shortcuts to programs organized by category. There are four such categories: eReading (it contains everything related to reading), "Games", "Multimedia" and " Social networks". If you have entered one of the folders, then you can go to the contents of the neighboring folder by simply scrolling, so, in fact, you get four more desktops in addition to the five available.

Sample Acer content folder

At the bottom left of the display are the on-screen navigation buttons. These are the back button, the return to the desktop button, and the call button recently running applications... In general, navigation is very convenient, as the display responds instantly to touch.

To enter information are used screen keyboard Android and a keyboard for entering text using the XT9 method (in this method, the computer offers a choice of words as you type).

I would also like to tell you about the experience of using external input devices connected via a USB connector.

There were no problems with the mouse initially. She immediately made up her mind perfectly and worked flawlessly. The only question is whether it is needed here at all.

With the USB keyboard, initially there was a small difficulty: it, like a mouse, is immediately detected and ready to work, but the support of the Russian language for external keyboard not in the tablet. This problem was solved by installing the Russian Keyboard application. After installation, you need to select the Russian Keyboard input method that appears there in the "Language and input" settings section and select the "External keyboard" layout in its settings.

Setting up the Russian keyboard

After that, you can fully work with documents. Everything is as usual, only the layout can be switched by two combinations at the same time - "Space" + Shift and Shift + Alt. Current layout displayed as a national flag in the lower right corner.

It would be interesting to check what happens if you connect a keyboard and a mouse at the same time via a USB hub. If all this works, then you can connect via HDMI to a TV and get a cool workplace... It’s a pity that I didn’t have a hub. If anyone has tried it, please unsubscribe in the comments.

Large display ideal for gaming

To work with the GPS module, here are used google maps, so for a comfortable work I advise you to install one of the appropriate applications.

The machine works very smartly. There are several games installed in the system that just go into the air. As an experiment, I installed a couple more, with which there were no problems either.

Another game screenshot

WITH wireless connections Everything is fine. The native browser slows down slightly, but no one bothers to install any other. This applies in general to all default programs that for some reason do not suit you. There are a lot of software for Android nowadays, including completely free ones.

Poisk-podbor.ru in a standard browser

The quality of the front camera is more than sufficient for the needs of network communication. The rear camera is somewhat more powerful, but in low light, you can't count on shooting masterpieces even with a flash. In general, judge by the examples of pictures.

Front camera shot

In the settings, you can set the type of lighting, exposure, shooting mode, etc., but the camera is still far away.

And this is a picture from the back camera.

With time autonomous work just beauty. In video mode, the tablet lasted seven hours. During operation ... It's even hard to say here. I've been torturing him for two days now, as soon as a free minute appears. And I load it normally: either download something, then watch a video on YouTube, play with a toy for about an hour (at night, however, I turned it off completely). In general, there is now still 30% of the battery charge. I feel that if I start "testing" it without turning it off, I will be cut out much earlier than it.

To summarize: powerful, lightweight, with exceptional viewing angles of the display, with Wi-Fi, 3G and GPS modules, with obedient control, the ability to connect external input devices, significant battery life, with two good cameras, finally, just a handsome man. Also, don't forget that the display is easy to wipe off.

There is only one negative against these pros - a lousy microphone. Well, to be completely objective, you can find fault with the location of the front camera, but this is a trifle. Although the face is shifted to the side, it hits the whole. Not so long ago, a tablet came into my hands, where only part of the face was captured by the camera. There was really a minus. And here it is, for show. So Acer tablet Iconia Tab A501 is a worthy competitor in its segment.

In addition, the tablet has a lot of features that were not provided by the developer. True, to implement most of them, you need root rights... So for those who like to experiment the expanse here is an unplowed field.

As for the cost of the gadget, in the configuration we have considered, its cost can be less than seventeen and a half thousand rubles.

I thank the network of computer stores "Jupiter" for the device provided for review.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 16Gb is one of the first tablets in Russia on the Android Honeycomb platform. Entering the market following the sensational Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Motorola XOOM, Iconia Tab was announced relatively modestly, but it surprised many with its quality and performance.

Distinctive feature this device already at least in the fact that the creators did not go along with everyone on the heels of Apple and did not copy appearance iPad. Acer design Iconia Tab A500 came out quite simple and pleasant. The front part is almost completely covered with glass, and the back - with an aluminum plate. The latter, it should be noted, affected the weight of the device, which amounted to 765 g with dimensions of 260x177x13 mm.

The performance of the gadget can already be called traditional for tablets based on Android. The Iconia Tab has a powerful NVIDIA Tegra2 dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB or 32GB internal memory with microSDHC card support.

The TFT display with a diagonal of 10.1 inches and with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels can also be called classic for devices of this type... The presence of two cameras (2 and 5 million pixels) is another not surprising, but nice detail.

The battery of the tablet is typical: in the economical mode it lasts on average for a day.

A feature of the gadget is the presence of a stereo output with sound quality like a CD. I was pleasantly surprised by the presence of two microphones with noise and echo cancellation function. The Dolby Mobile spatial sound reproduction system is another solid advantage of the device.

The price of the Acer Iconia Tab A500 is quite reasonable and matches its capabilities. On average in Russia, it is 15-16 thousand rubles (for a device with built-in memory of 16 GB).

Summary

Acer Iconia Tab A500 is a high-quality and relatively inexpensive device that managed to pleasantly surprise users. Before us is a worthy competitor to any other tablet.
Main pluses:

  • iPad-free design;
  • powerful processor;
  • high-quality sound;
  • price.

The main cons:

  • slight backlash is possible;
  • impressive weight.

1.Heavy, just because of the aluminum case
    2. There is a problem with wi-fi reception, the signal level is lower than that of competitors. And again, because of the aluminum case, which does not pass the signal, but I would not say that it is very critical.
3.Short charging wire, barely reaches the table.
4.Glossy screen, solved by gluing an anti-glare film

    1) The main thing I want to warn you about, and for the sake of which I am writing this review, is VERY low sound quality when communicating via Skype and IP-telephony!
But after many hours spent researching the problem, I came to the conclusion that this is not the problem with the Acer Iconia, but the Android Honeycomb. The problem should appear to some extent on all tablets with Android Honeycomb. At least in version 3.2 (in version 3.0 everything is fine)
The microphone quality is normal. If you record sound using programs that can write it directly from a microphone, the sound is clear and of high quality, but all voice and video chat programs use a voice stream with automatic echo cancellation and sound level control. This is where the problems begin. The sound comes out like from a toilet and is very quiet and with a very high level.

As such, I did not find them, well, for little things. I did not immediately find on the keyboard where to switch the language) I did not immediately figure out how to transfer from a flash drive to a tablet, but again it was difficult for me. For someone it is not significant.

WI-FI sometimes (!) Turns on, updates are also only through WI-FI., The camera on the front side is not very high quality, although this is not so important

The Acer Iconia Tab A501 Internet Tablet powered by the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor can be an excellent compromise for those who cannot choose between an Internet tablet and a laptop. The presence of Wi-Fi and 3G modules will allow you to access the Web from almost anywhere, and the ability to connect an external keyboard will allow you to work with documents without any restrictions.

The Acer Iconia Tab A501 is often compared to the famous iPad.

The device is assembled on the basis of the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor with a clock speed of 1 GHz and runs on the Android operating system.

The amount of RAM is 1 GB.

Its resolution is 1280 × 800.

On the right side there is a Reset button, a Micro-USB connector for synchronizing with a computer (a Micro-USB / USB cable is included in the package), a network adapter socket and a USB connector to which you can connect an external drive and other equipment such as a mouse, keyboard or joystick.

On the bottom there is a connector for connecting the tablet to the docking station.

When you first connect to the Internet, you will be prompted to update the software version, and if you are not a very experienced user of this operating system, I recommend doing this, since not everything is smooth initially on the tablet. For example, there are problems playing video from a USB drive and there is no way to safely remove it. In addition, the operating system will be updated immediately to version 3.2, which has a lot of advantages.
