Acer iconia tab w700 game test. Hybrid Tablet - Acer Iconia Tab W700

The ICONIA line of devices has been heard by users since 2010, when a 14-inch tablet-notebook with two touch displays was released. And at CES 2011, this original device received the title of "Best New Product of the Year." Of course, the next two years, Acer did not sit idly by. So, in the spring of 2012, two tablets were presented at Computex 2012: the first ICONIA W510, the second - ICONIA W700. Both are based on the Windows 8 operating system and have quite impressive performance. Unlike the W510 model, the Acer ICONIA W700 is equipped with an 11.6-inch Full HD display and can be equipped with a Bluetooth keyboard instead of a keyboard dock. A set of necessary accessories is complemented by a docking station with three USB ports and a leather case.

Design

The case of Acer ICONIA W700, as for a tablet, is somewhat bulky. Perhaps it seems so because of the wide silver frame under the display and the edging on the sides. The back of the tablet is made entirely of aluminum, except for a thin strip of plastic; both materials are slightly rough, which will not allow the tablet to slip out of your hands. The upper part of ICONIA W700 is durable Gorilla Glass. Above the display is the lens of the built-in webcam, and below it is the Windows button.

Otherwise, the design of the tablet is quite simple. The attractiveness of the model is given only by the Acer logo and the name of the ICONIA line. The first one can be seen under the display and behind, and the inscription ICONIA is on the right side. The tablet has dimensions of 295x191x11.9 mm and a relatively large weight of 900 grams. It is he who, first of all, will cause inconvenience if you hold the tablet in your hands for a long time. But the build quality, on the contrary, pleased.

Display, sound, webcam

The ICONIA W700 uses an 11.6-inch CineCrystal display with Full HD resolution. Perhaps the advantage of the screen is not only a high resolution, but also IPS technology, thanks to which the image on the display is perfectly visible even from the side without loss of clarity and color reproduction. The viewing angles are 178 degrees. However, there are pitfalls in the resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. So, icons in the classic Windows mode 7 will be relatively small, making it difficult to navigate, and the text may not seem particularly large either.

The relatively high level of screen brightness will allow you to work comfortably indoors and outdoors. Moreover, using the built-in light sensor, the brightness of the backlight will be adjusted automatically. By the way, despite the glossy display, there will not be so many reflections and glare.

In addition to the above, we add that the tablet display supports 10-point multi-touch, and the sensor itself is very sensitive. With a good screen responsiveness, you can quickly complete any task.

Tablet acoustics are two built-in speakers. They are located on the bottom panel of the tablet. The volume of the Acer W700 is enough for a small room, but the overall impression of the sound remains twofold. When playing tracks with pronounced bass, wheezing and distortion were heard, but when choosing more pop songs, the sound seemed slightly voluminous and cleaner. By the way, the tablet provides software Dolby Home Theater v4, which allows you to select one of the preset profiles: video, music, games, or create your own.

The tablet has two HD cameras on the front and back. The first with a resolution of 2 megapixels is ideal for video calls, while the main 5-megapixel Acer CrystalEye with autofocus will allow you to take photos or shoot videos. By the way, the pictures taken by the rear camera turned out to be not very high quality (blurry and a bit grainy).

Keyboard

The touch keyboard of this tablet is absolutely typical. It has a standard layout, switching from Russian to English is also simple.

Much more interesting is the external keyboard, which easily connects to the tablet via Bluetooth and works with it regardless of whether the ICONIA W700 is connected to the docking station or not.

Island keyboard buttons are pressed easily, with good tactile feedback; You don’t have to get used to the layout, it is standard. Above the block of keys is a button to turn on the keyboard.

Performance

The device runs on a 64-bit Windows 8 operating system. The Acer ICONIA W700-323b4G06as tablet is equipped with a dual-core low-voltage Intel Core i3-2365M processor with a clock speed of 1.4 GHz and a third-level cache of 3 MB. Due to lack of technology turbo boost the operating frequency of the processor always remains the same. However, there is support for Hyper-Threading, thanks to which the Core i3-2365M can simultaneously process multiple data streams. In general, power given processor enough for smooth operation several running programs such as web surfing, video playback, photo editing and more.

There is also a bundle with a third-generation Intel Core i5-3317U processor with a frequency of 1.7 GHz and an integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics card. In our configuration, the Core i3-2365M processor is complemented by an integrated Intel graphics HD Graphics 3000 with DirectX 10.1 support. It copes well with tasks typical for graphics accelerators. For example, it decodes video, allows you to play undemanding toys.

The stuffing is complemented by 4 GB random access memory and 64 GB of built-in flash memory. The RAM is DDR3 standard and the SSD is connected via SATA/300 providing throughput up to 3 Gbps. Unfortunately, the tablet does not have a card reader, so it will not be possible to increase the amount of internal memory. Unless you replace the SSD with a more capacious one. However, there is a package ICONIA W700-53314G12as with 128 GB, so you can consider this option.

Ports and communications

On the right side There are no ports on the Acer ICONIA W700 tablet. Here you can see the audio jack, as well as two buttons: power and volume.

On the left there is Micro-HDMI, which allows you to connect the tablet to an external display and show, for example, a presentation (the kit includes a Micro-HDMI-VGA adapter). The left side also has a charging slot and a full-size USB 3.0.

Basically one USB port should be enough, however, if you are going to connect a docking station, then it should be free. The docking station adds three high-speed USB 3.0 standards - for a flash drive, mouse or external hard drive enough. Although, if analyzed in general, there are no significant additions here, but it would be nice to see a keyboard, a network port or a built-in battery (as in the W510).

By the way, the dock stand itself looks like a bracket. The tablet is inserted into it from the right side in such a way that the docking station covers the gadget on the right and bottom.

Unfortunately, you can't change the angle, but you can insert the detachable stand on the docking station so that your tablet is in portrait or landscape (70 or 20 degree tilt) orientation.

As for the upper edge of the tablet, there are ventilation grilles and a slider on it, which blocks the automatic rotation of the display. Air enters the tablet through the left hole, and exits through the right hole.

But below you can see the speakers of the speaker system. It is interesting that special holes are provided for them in the docking station so that nothing interferes with the outgoing sound. By the way, a place has been cut out in the dock for windows keys which simplifies the operation of the device.

As you can see, there is no card reader on any of the sides, which excludes an increase in the amount of internal memory using a microSD card.

Among the communications of the Acer W700 tablet there is not only Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n, but also Bluetooth, but there is no 3G module. The sensors include an accelerometer and a gyroscope.

Battery

The tablet is equipped with a 3-segment lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 4850 mAh. The non-removable battery is charged by a 65-watt power supply for 4 hours. I was pleasantly surprised by the duration of work in the video viewing mode, in which the battery charge was enough for more than 7 hours (at 60% brightness and Wi-Fi on). The tablet also showed good autonomy under load - about 2 hours 30 minutes. If the ICONIA W700 is left in idle mode, the battery will last more than 9 hours.

Conclusion

The Acer ICONIA W700 tablet is a rather interesting model that attracts with its functionality and the presence of additional accessories. Also, the device can be proud of a high-quality IPS-display with high resolution and good autonomy. Perhaps what is really missing in the tablet is a device for reading memory cards. The lack of a card reader is especially felt even against the background of other shortcomings, such as the insufficiently good quality of photos taken by the main camera, or a bulky case,

In general, despite the official-business appearance of the tablet, it will also not be left without attention. Although it is not a fact that many will be ready to easily part with $ 1000 to buy this device.

A tablet has arrived in our test lab Acer Iconia Tab W700. The tablet was first introduced in the summer of 2012, but still does not lose its relevance and is sold at very attractive prices. The tablet comes with full Windows 8, a large 11.6-inch screen and an Intel Core i5 processor. It turns out a full-fledged computer in a compact format. Read all the details in our review.

Appearance

The Acer Iconia Tab W700 looks solid. This is ensured by both a large screen and a solid aluminum body. The screen is protected by scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass. The build quality is really good. There are no backlashes and deflections of the case. Around the glass that protects the screen, there is a rubber gasket that prevents dust from entering. An interesting feature are the grids covering the speakers. They are red here.

The tablet is quite thick. The thickness is 11.9 mm. The thickness is not too large, and this drawback can be forgiven given the fact that they managed to fit both the filling and the battery from a full-fledged laptop here. The Acer Iconia Tab W700 also weighs quite a lot for a tablet - 950 g. You get tired if you hold it with one hand.

There are few connectors and control buttons in the tablet. On the left side are (from top to bottom): microphone holes, a micro-HDMI connector, a full USB 3.0 port and a charging connector. At the top are a screen orientation lock button and fan holes with a cooling radiator. On the right side are a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a volume rocker and a power button with an LED for alerts. At the bottom, there are two speakers and another microphone. Above the screen in the middle is a 2-megapixel front-camera, an LED indicator of camera operation, as well as an ambient light sensor. Below the screen is the Windows button to return to the home screen. At the back, in the upper part, there is a 5-megapixel camera, also with an LED indicator of operation.

There are two fan openings, but this is done for symmetry, in fact there is only one fan. It is located under the right grate. The cooling system works almost constantly, even during reading, the fan turns on and off. And the fan makes a lot of noise and loudly, although the sound does not irritate the ears. The noise is very annoying. Perhaps it is related to our test sample.

Contents of delivery

The delivery package of the Acer Iconia Tab W700 is very good.

Inside the box, in addition to the tablet itself, there is a docking station with a built-in USB hub, wireless bluetooth keyboard, power supply, microHDMI-VGA adapter, instructions, warranty card, Windows recovery discs.

The docking station is a stand for the tablet. She herself is made of plastic, the size is quite large and thick. The design looks much cheaper than the design of the Acer Iconia Tab W700 itself. For the speakers, there are corresponding holes that "redirect" the sound forward. The design allows it to be used for landscape and portrait orientations. But the angle of inclination cannot be changed. And the standard angle in landscape orientation is small - the tablet screen seems to be looking at the chest, and not at the face. The docking station has a built-in USB hub. It has three USB 3.0 ports. Unfortunately, it only works when the docking station is connected to the network. For this, charging from the tablet is used.

The keyboard is good, membrane type. It looks stylish, the key travel is pleasant and quite large for portable devices. The keyboard does not flex when pressed. It is comfortable to work with her. The keys are white, so they get dirty quickly. You have to clean them quite often. The inscriptions on the keys are black. The letters of the Russian language are not highlighted in a separate color. inscriptions function keys using the gray Fn button. The keyboard has 66 keys. Standard size keys. The distance between them is slightly narrower than the standard, but not much - you will not miss when typing blindly. The arrows are half-height, with the up arrow positioned close to the Shift key. You have to get used to this. The F1-F12 keys are available when you press the Fn key. The only thing that upset me was the position of the Delete key - it is located in the place of the context menu call key. This is unusual and uncomfortable. The keyboard connects to the tablet via Bluetooth. Runs on four AAA batteries. There are two indicators - battery charge and Bluetooth connection. Both the keyboard and the docking station have rubber pads and are non-slip on the table.

We have a copy with such a delivery set. There are also tablets on sale with a case in which the keyboard is built.

Software

Windows 8 was preinstalled on the tablet. The system offered to upgrade to Windows 8.1. After the update, the tablet began to react poorly to touching the screen and generally “slow down”. The situation is corrected by reinstalling the drivers, which can be downloaded from the official support site.

The Windows 8.1 used is no different from the desktop version for a laptop or desktop computer, everything is familiar. Although the system is still designed for mobile devices. Only by controlling gestures, it becomes convenient to call up the menu with charms (swipe your finger across the screen from the right edge), close metro-style applications (swipe your finger across the screen from the top edge), call the task manager, etc.

Unusual screen lock function. The tablet goes to sleep and it takes time to unlock (about 1.5s). This should be remembered, because if you press the power button twice, the tablet will not wake up. But in this sleep mode, the tablet practically does not consume energy and can lie for a long time.

In Metro mode, the tablet is convenient to use. Thanks to the touch screen, the system can be controlled with various gestures. In windowed mode, with a standard scale, everything is very small (Full-HD resolution on the screen is 11.6 "). It is comfortable to work only at a scale of 150%. Then you can safely hit the buttons on the screen with your finger. But in this case, the screen fits quite little information. In addition, not all applications support scaling, because of this, the picture in them is blurry. In fact, windowed mode is not designed for finger control. If you set the scale to 125%, then there is enough information included, and the size of the icons is acceptable In this case, mouse and keyboard control is convenient.

Compared to other platforms, there are still quite a few useful apps in the Windows Store app store. Many popular mobile apps don't have ports for Windows 8 (games: Dead Trigger, Need for Speed; Instagram app). Some applications have ports, but they are less functional, for example, the client of the popular social network Vkontakte. But in this case, it's not such a big problem. The Acer Iconia Tab W700 has full Windows, not the RT version, which means you can run standard .exe applications. Only now they usually do not involve finger control. You have to connect a mouse.

Performance

Since we have both a tablet and a device with full-fledged Windows 8, we will test using a combined method.

Below are screenshots of CPU-Z.

Windows Experience Index

First of all, we evaluated the performance of the system using the built-in index Windows performance. Only in Windows 8.1 the results are not displayed anywhere. They are contained in a system file.

The result is good. 4.9 points for a compact tablet. The result is determined by the smallest value. In our case, the weak link is the graphics core. All other components have an even higher result.

CPU performance

The next step was performance testing with the built-in benchmark of the popular WinRAR archiver, which loads all the processing cores of the processor.

The result (~ 3254 KB/s) is good for a mobile device. For comparison, a recently tested one showed a result of only 730 kb / s.

We tested the performance of the Intel Core i5 3317U chip in the Acer Iconia Tab W700 using Linpack from the MetroBench package. Results are in millions of floating point operations per second (MFLOPS).

Average performance: 920 Mflop/s - this is the best result among the tablets we tested, but the processor here is an Intel Core i5, not an intel Atom. And ARM's rivals are noticeably behind.

GPU performance

The 3DMark Ice Storm test uses tests that simulate 3D games, as well as synthetic tests of the video subsystem and CPU.

In standard mode, the results are not even displayed. The maximum possible values have been exceeded. In Unlimited mode, we were able to get results. The results are just great for a tablet. But compared to competitors from Microsoft, the Acer Iconia Tab W700 turned out to be slower. Surface Pro. Slower than both the updated second version and the first.

We also measured the performance of the graphics subsystem using a cross-platform benchmark - Relative Benchmark.

Productivity is high. This is the best result among the tablets we tested.

JavaScript Performance

To test JavaScript performance, we used the SunSpider benchmark.

The result is impressive: 228ms (less is better). Again a record.

Network performance

We tested network performance with IxChariot. The tablet was at a distance of about 1 meter from the access point. The maximum available network mode (802.11n) was tested, no other active transmissions were taking place at this time.

And here the result turned out to be excellent: 55 Mbps. No wonder the aluminum tablet has a plastic insert on the back for the wireless module.

Games

On the tablet, all the games from the store go without problems. No lags are noticeable - everything is smooth and clear. You can control it using the touch screen, and using the tilt of the tablet (position sensor), and using the keyboard (for example, in the game Asphalt 8 you can try all three methods).

But the Acer Iconia Tab W700 is running full Windows 8, not the RT version, so let's not dwell on games from the Windows App Store, let's try to run full games from the Steam store.

Sid Meier's Civilization V

This popular strategy is adapted for touch screen control. At startup, you can select the appropriate Touch mode. It is convenient to play. It's fun just to try. For example, to select a unit or press some control button, you do not need to move the mouse - you can immediately click in the right place with your finger. You can also use multi-finger gestures, such as zoom. On the maximum settings the game, of course, slows down - it's still the built-in HD4000 graphics core, and the native screen resolution here is Full-HD (1920x1080). But on medium settings you can play quite comfortably. Only large maps do not load immediately, but this problem also exists on more powerful configurations. Unlike a laptop, it is comfortable to play while lying in bed or sitting in a car / subway.

GestureWorks Gameplay

At the moment, most games do not involve finger control. But there is a solution for them too. There is a GestureWorks Gameplay application that adds a virtual joystick to the screen. You can create a set of virtual buttons yourself, you can use ready-made ones from the site.

Thanks to this, the control becomes "playable". It is better to see once than hear a hundred times. Everything becomes clear from the next video.

Shooters are not so comfortable to play without tactile feedback - the gameplay is similar to mobile shooters (Modern Combat). But games where hover accuracy is not so important are really convenient to play: Skyrim, Portal 2, Assassin's Creed and any racing. We evaluated the work and functionality of the program on the example of Portal 2.

Portal 2

The game itself is not particularly demanding on the hardware, the system produces a sufficient amount of FPS even at the "native" resolution. In this game, in most cases you need to think more than react quickly, so you can play using the on-screen joystick and control buttons. The speed of the game is less than with the keyboard, but it's worth it. It turns out a game for the tablet with adjustment to your grip and finger length. You can play such "adult" games on the road. It's comfortable. This may appeal to fans of quests. For PC good games this genre is much more.

It turns out on the tablet you can normally play "adult" games from the PC. Then why buy a separate laptop or desktop computer for gaming? We measured the performance of the tablet in several popular games that you can play by sitting at the table, docking the tablet, connecting the keyboard and mouse.

We launched World Of Warcraft Lich King. This game behaved a little strange - 24 fps at low settings and a resolution of 1366x768, 23 fps at maximum settings and a "native" resolution of 1920x1080. The performance of the Acer Iconia Tab W700 should be sufficient for undemanding popular games such as WOW, CS and Dota. The screen has a high resolution, but is relatively big sizes. But do not forget about the micro-HDMI connector - you can connect a large monitor and play if that's important to you.

In the game Mafia II at minimum settings, the built-in benchmark showed 11.9 and 22.0 FPS at 1360x768 and 640x480, respectively. I even managed to launch Grand Theft Auto IV, although the built-in benchmark did not load, I managed to start the game itself. The game settings showed that the system allocated only 100 MB of video memory, and the game requires a minimum of 300 MB. Therefore, although the game loaded and gave out a sufficient amount of FPS (there were no visible jerks and delays), the textures did not have time to load, and the car in the game drove through the “emptiness”.

You won't be able to play demanding games on the Acer Iconia Tab W700. At the moment, technologies are not developed enough to fit a sufficiently powerful configuration into such a compact case and provide it with sufficient cooling.

Camera

Like most other tablets, Acer Iconia Tab W700 is equipped with two cameras. Rear with a matrix resolution of 5 MP and front - 2 MP. The front camera is good, everything is clearly visible, and when moving, the picture is not blurred, only in poor lighting the picture becomes grainy. For video conferencing, it will definitely be enough for you.

photo gallery . The video can be downloaded in uncompressed form (20 MB).

The rear camera is great for capturing moments when nothing else is at hand. Photos are grainy and blurry even in good light. The camera is located in a corner, so it's hard to navigate when photographing close objects. There is no flash.

I was pleased with the additional microphone, which really suppresses noise. In the test videos, the street was shot during the day. It's quite noisy, but there's no background noise in the clips.

Below is an example of a front camera shot and a video. You can see all test photos in the photo gallery. The video can be downloaded in uncompressed form (52 MB).

Video

Since April 2013, we have been using a new testing methodology for testing multimedia devices. It is divided into several parts.

  • Popular formats- Common video formats and codecs. Their support is recommended to be evaluated first of all
  • DVD and Blu-Ray disc images— checking the playback of full DVD/Blu-ray images, including menus. Recommended if you store your media library as images
  • Rare formats- less common formats, but still relevant
  • Ultra HD 2K and 4K— formats with an eye to the future. In 2013, ultra-high-definition video will gain popularity

Testing was performed using Media Player Classic after installing the K-Lite Codec Pack Mega.

With the exception of Ultra HD 4K, the tablet handled all video formats from our test video library successfully. Acer Iconia Tab W700 can be connected via micro-HDMI to a large TV in the living room and get a full-fledged Smart TV with support for a large number video formats. In addition, a microHDMI-VGA adapter is included, thanks to which you can connect a projector to the tablet at a conference.

Battery Life

The Acer Iconia Tab W700 showed good battery life. It has a 4850 mAh battery, but, unlike Android tablets, the battery has a higher output voltage, and therefore the capacity cannot be compared in mAh, you need to compare in Wh. There is no such information on the official website. But for us, the main thing is the final time of work. We got 7.5 hours of movie viewing at maximum brightness. In reading mode, the tablet will last 11 hours at all. In our tests in game mode, it ran out of juice in less than three hours. But this was the Unigine Heaven test, which fully loads the system and discharges it as quickly as possible. For a day of normal use, the tablet was always enough.

Charging the Acer Iconia Tab W700 from a full-fledged laptop, at 65 W, so the tablet charges quickly.

Conclusion

Every year computers become more and more mobile. First to change desktop computers with a system unit the size of a large box came laptops, then laptops became thinner and lighter - ultrabooks appeared. The next step was tablets on full-fledged Windows 8, which are in no way inferior to the “big brothers” in terms of their capabilities. A striking example of this concept is the Acer Iconia Tab W700, which is equipped with a full-fledged Intel Core processor. Thanks to this, unlike tablets on Intel Atom, it has the performance of a desktop computer. At the same time, the entire filling fit into a relatively compact case weighing less than a kilogram.

With such dimensions and performance, some compromises had to be made: the tablet is equipped with an active cooling system and, unlike ultrabooks, has only one USB 3.0 port. The main thing is that Acer did not pursue the minimum weight and installed an impressive battery in the case, which is enough to fully use the tablet for a whole day, and sometimes two.

I really liked the screen of the tablet. IPS matrix with excellent viewing angles, Full-HD resolution at 11.6 inches. He's just great. The quality of the picture, its clarity, color and brightness are at their best. It is a pleasure to watch movies, pictures, read on such a screen. Thanks to the high resolution, the eyes do not get tired.

The performance of the tablet is more than enough for all mobile applications, it is not enough only for today's high-performance games. Ultrabooks are equipped with exactly the same hardware and have the same performance, although they are less compact.

These Windows tablets are the most versatile. They are convenient to use for both work and leisure. Complete Microsoft Office, Adobe Dreamweaver for work, you can watch any movies (there are codecs for x86 processors for most formats), and you can play not only games from the store, but also with " big brother”, such as Portal 2 or Civilization V. The last opportunity was remembered the most. What else do you need from a tablet?

This is by far the best tablet I've ever owned. Of course, I want an even thinner case and longer battery life. I hope it will be in updated version tablet with a Haswell processor.

Acer Iconia W7 is available on the market in several configurations. Two models are produced - W700 and W701. The first comes without a 3G module, the second has it built in. There are three configurations for each model on the Russian market:

  • With Core i3 processor, 64Gb memory
  • With Core i3 processor, 64Gb memory + docking station + keyboard
  • With Core i5 processor, 128Gb memory + docking station + keyboard

The main advantage of the Acer Iconia W7 compared to competitors such as Microsoft Surface Pro, Samsung Ativ smart PC pro was the price. Acer cost around 30-35 thousand rubles, while competitors - for 40-45 thousand rubles. Now Acer W7 is leaving the market, but the tablet can be purchased at sales. Let's wait for the updated version on Haswell in our test lab and hope that it will have the same "delicious" performance/price ratio.

Video review and unboxing

Design, construction and equipment

To begin with, I want to say about the varieties of this tablet. In total, there are three configurations of the device - the basic one (the tablet itself with Intel Core i3, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB SSD and Intel HD 3000 graphics), which comes with only a leather case; basic extended, where a docking station and a keyboard are added to everything else; maximum with the same case, dock and keyboard, but with a more powerful filling of the tablet itself (Core i5, 128 GB SSD, Intel HD 4000). The cost of the youngest configuration is 24,990 rubles, the average is 27,990, but the top one will cost 34,990. We got the basic extended configuration for the test, and now we’ll talk about it.

The tablet comes in a huge stylish box. Inside, everything is neatly arranged into compartments. In the largest one there is a case, under it there is a tablet, and already under it there are various documentation and instructions, as well as disks with drivers and for system recovery. It's curious that standard means cannot be done on a tablet. full reset data and for this you need to connect a CD drive in order to allow the device to load the initial system image from the disk. What prevented it from being written to a USB flash drive is not clear, but the fact that it would be much more convenient is an unequivocal fact. Among other things, in the box you can find a power adapter and an adapter from microHDMI to VGA. Perhaps this accessory will be useful to someone.

To be honest, I have no idea how the box of the extended and maximum configuration of the tablet looks like, since I got the docking station and keyboard in a separate bag. Speaking of docking stations. First, it is not simple, but composite. By attaching the stand in one way or another, you can turn the tablet into a replacement for a desktop PC or monoblock, or into some kind of interactive magazine. Secondly, it increases the number of USB 3.0 ports available to you from one to four, which will allow you to connect a lot of different gadgets to your computer, including a keyboard and mouse, if wireless keyboard from Acer you suddenly do not like something.

But let's move on to the tablet itself. It is worth noting that it is quite bulky and heavy, which is not surprising with a screen size of 11.6 "and metal case. The display resolution is 1920x1080 pixels, which I personally think the best option for devices with such a diagonal. Unaccustomed to the elements and fonts of the standard Windows desktop may seem very small, but this can be easily corrected by increasing the scale or size of the fonts. The touch interface looks normal and is very pleasing to the eye.

On the front side of the device, in addition to the screen, you can see a 1.3-megapixel camera and an ambient light sensor. In the upper left corner there is a list of the main advantages of the tablet, under the screen there is a single physical Windows button, and the lower right corner is given over to the Acer logo, hollowed out in metal. At the top end there is a slider to turn off the auto-rotation of the image and two cooling grilles. Yes, yes, the tablet is equipped with full-fledged coolers, after all, there is quite an adult computer hardware here.

The bottom end is equipped with stylish stereo speakers and a microphone. On the right side of the device, you can find USB 3.0 ports, micro HDMI and a hole for the charger. The inscriptions Dolby Home Theater and Professionally Tuned tell us about the professional tuning of the device and its good musical capabilities. The sound from the stereo speakers is very good. On the left side are the power button, volume keys, 3.5 mm headphone jack, model barcode and the Iconia inscription, which tells us that the gadget belongs to the Acer tablet line. The back side of the device is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera with an additional microphone.

There are absolutely no complaints about the assembly of the tablet, since there is one solid monolithic structure. The device is pleasant to hold in hands, but the considerable weight makes it problematic to use the W700 outside the apartment. Personally, I see the main use case for using a tablet with a docking station and a keyboard as the main PC (hardware allows it), with the ability to move to a cozy warm bed for watching movies, gaming, surfing the Web and social networks. Well, I would like to separately note the design of this set of tablet and accessories - as for me, it is simply gorgeous. A sort of futuristic high-tech minimalism for your workplace.

Software

The tablet runs a full 64-bit version of Windows 8 (or Windows 8 Pro in the maximum configuration), which means that we have an adult working system familiar to everyone on desktops and laptops. The main feature of Windows 8 is full support for touch input thanks to an interface optimized for finger control. Actually, it is about its functionality that I want to talk about in this review, while describing familiar interface and the possibility of Windows I do not see the need.

We have a friend in front of us Windows phone and the already familiar tiled interface with live tiles displaying various up-to-date information. Thanks to them, the screen looks lively and bright, besides, all the main elements are at hand. By default, the tile feed is divided into several categories: standard programs systems, Acer applications, where programs pre-installed by the company are collected, as well as those installed by you. List of all installed programs on this tablet computer can be called by making a swipe from the bottom edge of the screen to the top and pressing a special icon. All of them can be pinned to the main screen. When no programs are hanging in the background, this panel can be called up with the opposite gesture. With it, you can close background applications or pin them to one side of the screen. A back and forth gesture from the left edge of the screen will bring up a panel of all recent running and background programs. With its appearance, it resembles Android, but the programs are not closed by swiping, and, I must say, in vain.

A swipe from the right edge of the screen brings up a panel where the icons for search, sharing, Start, Devices and Settings are located. Depending on the location of the call (app store or some program), the panel may display a different Additional information. In addition to the panel, a clock also appears on the display showing the time, date, day of the week, amount of charge and Wi-Fi connection activity.

In the parameters you can do quick settings, such as connecting to Wi-Fi or adjusting the brightness, read help, or go to more detailed computer settings.

The Personalization item allows you to select pictures for the lock screen, customize the color scheme and background image of the home screen, and make or choose an avatar for your account. In addition, you can immediately select the desired applications for the lock screen.

In Users settings, you can sign in with your Windows Live account, change your password, or set graphic key with a pin code, as well as add or change the user of the device.

In Notifications, you can turn on or off certain notifications of the system and specifically for each application. Personally, this item reminded me of similar settings in iOS.

The Search settings offer to turn on the log for frequently used queries and select applications with which or in which the tablet can be searched for the necessary data.

The sharing options are quite typical for this kind of setup.

The General heading hides the time settings, application switching, touch keyboard, spelling, screen auto-brightness, and language. Here you can see the available amount of free internal memory for data storage, as well as various options for restoring factory settings. You can make an easy reset without deleting data, but you won’t be able to do a hard-rezzet without a proprietary disk with software, although I would very much like to. Personally, I have long dreamed of the possibility of rolling back to the factory state on desktop Windows without any disks and system images, but the way it is implemented in mobile operating systems. Sometimes this can come in very handy. Well, I can’t help but complain once again that it would be wiser to place the system files on a flash drive, and not on a disk, so that you don’t have to buy a drive separately to connect to the tablet in order to take advantage of this opportunity if something happens.

There is nothing particularly interesting in Confidentiality, and the cat cried too many settings.

The Devices item allows you to add certain devices to the memory of your tablet, be it a printer, a full-sized laptop, and so on.

In Wireless, airplane mode, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth are enabled.

Accessibility features are designed for people with certain disabilities. Here you can turn on the contrast mode of the screen, increase the elements, Narrator, magnifier, also adjust the display of notifications and the thickness of the cursor.

Synchronization settings allows you to choose exactly what you want to sync and how. Settings home group and Center windows updates speak for themselves. It is worth noting that some programs may require updating from under the normal system interface.

Consider the pre-installed applications and the main programs of the touch interface of the system. Mail is a branded email client with the ability to connect multiple accounts, but you need to add them from the Options, and not from the mail settings.

Contacts contains all your friends and acquaintances, as well as your and their social activity. You can link the application to Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, Hotmail, Outlook, and Microsoft itself. Able to show only those contacts that are currently online and available for communication. Adding new people is simple and straightforward. You can also read your social feeds here.

The Desktop tile allows you to go to your usual desktop and do serious business without any multi-colored disgrace.

In Messages, you can see your correspondence history, connect Accounts and invite someone to this chat. Clicking Invite opens Internet Explorer with the Microsoft page and asks you to enter the mail of the person you want to invite to this messenger.

There is nothing particularly interesting in the Calendar. View events by day, week or month.

Photos display all the images stored in the device's memory. You can connect a camera or other device to your tablet and import photos from it directly to your tablet. Also, this program allows you to view images from your accounts in a tile-style slideshow display.

Beautiful and visual, the Bing Weather app is a great example of what programs should look like on Windows 8 touch and similar devices. There is a display of the weather around the world and selected places, various graphics and a forecast for several days.

Internet Explorer is the standard browser for browsing the Internet. Minimum functionality, looks simple and works quite well.

Bing Maps, aka Nokia Maps. Quite detailed and convenient, for simple navigation will be more than sufficient. Of the functions - routes and traffic jams, there is a satellite view. Fonts on the Full HD screen of the tablet do not look very clear.

News allows you to choose the sources you are interested in and read them. There is a choice between domestic portals and global ones.

The App Store contains all the programs adapted for the touch interface. The games here are still the simplest and there are few of them, but with the programs things are a little better. There are many categories, so you can find something to your liking.

SkyDrive is cloud storage for your Windows devices, including tablets and smartphones. Allows you to synchronize photos, documents and other files between them.

There's also a Bing search here, displaying various pretty pictures and a search bar.

In the Games section, you can find both games for Windows and games for the Xbox 360, but, of course, you cannot play them without a miracle box. But you can watch game trailers. To download something from here, you need to click search for games in the app store, see the Xbox game streams, select your favorite, click "Play", then see a notification that links of this type do not open automatically without the Xbox Live App program, and only then click "Get from the store". Of course, if you install this very Xbox Live App, then the procedure will be somewhat simplified, but finding this program is not at all easy. It didn't work out for me. Intuitive system, you will not say anything.

Music & Video displays all your songs, movies and clips. The system-style interface looks a little nicer than on Windows Phone, but it's surprising that with a 1080p screen, some words could not be beautifully transferred to the submenu. Apparently, this is a common disease of all eighth Windows. The same dance is observed on mobile system. As for the functionality, it is the most basic here, but it allows you to broadcast video on the Xbox.

The Sports Bing tile displays major sports news from around the world. An interesting and enjoyable program for sports lovers.

Bing Travel shows you the most beautiful places around the world, finds flights and hotels, and shows you 3D panoramas of cities around the world.

Acer also pre-installed a few of its apps, as well as those it saw fit.

Acer Explorer is an interactive explorer that allows you to install recommended programs, go to the company's website and get manufacturer support, and learn more about the features of your device thanks to Acer tutorials, which for some reason are not yet there.

In the newsXpresso news catalog, you can choose the topics you are interested in and read the news in a convenient tiled format.

Electronic store Kindle books needs no introduction.

There is an adapted version of Skype. On first launch, it will prompt you to merge your account with your Windows Live account. Perhaps it will please you with a minimalistic interface and a minimum of settings.

TuneIn is a convenient and advanced Internet radio with a huge number of both local and foreign radio stations. Looks great, basic functionality. The versions for iOS or Android are far away, but outwardly I like them much more.

Skitch allows you to create various graphic notes, sketches and synchronize them with Evernote.

ivi.ru is a popular online cinema, but there are not very many films here, and the assortment is not the most interesting.

Weather Bug is a cute and functional weather app.

There are a few simple games preinstalled: Microsoft MiniSweeper, Treasures Of Montesuma as a demo that doesn't run full screen, and Gameloft's Shark Dash, which is a little slow. In addition to them, there is the most popular Cut The Rope, Wordament, where you need to find various words, and Microsoft Mahjong.

The branded cloud service Acer Cloud has not gone anywhere, which, however, does not work in the tiled interface and throws it into the usual one. Of course, not without Microsoft Office, which must be activated or downloaded for trial, and McAfee internet security also falling into normal windowed mode.

Social Jogger is a kind of aggregator of your social activity in various networks. To be honest, I don’t see the need for it, since the system itself aggregates everything very well anyway.

Acer Crystal Eye lets you apply various effects to your tablet's webcam and take a variety of fun photos.

When you touch the screen with the whole five, the Ring, familiar to us from Android tablets, is activated, which allows you to perform certain operations and settings.

Camera

A 5-megapixel module is installed in the tablet, which allows you to take medium-quality photos and about the same quality in video in maximum resolution 1944p. To be honest, this is the first time I see such resolutions for videos in tablets and mobile devices. I don’t know who would think of shooting in this quality on a tablet that is not the lightest and most compact, but apparently there are such people, since the company has added such an opportunity. The camera interface is simple, the functionality is the most basic. You can find examples of photos below, but our sample did not work with the video - strong sound distortion, accelerated display of frames, lags. Most likely, this is a bug of a particular instance of the device, or rather, its software.

Performance and user experience

As I said, I tested the simplest tablet configuration with a 1.4 GHz dual-core Core i3 processor, 4 GB of RAM, Intel HD 3000 graphics and 64 GB of SSD storage. Memory, as for me, is not enough, since it was enough for me only for two more or less modern computer games, several programs and simpler games. In addition, out of 64 GB, only 59 are available, some of which are occupied by the system, as well as numerous pre-installed software. As for the power of iron, I decided not to give a huge number of computer benchmarks here, but to limit myself to the results of the Windows performance test. They are quite clear and revealing, besides, each of you can compare the results with your laptop or Windows computer to evaluate the approximate performance of the tablet without any serious effort.

For comparison, here are the results of my Asus Zenbook Prime UX21A ultrabook with a Core i7 processor, 256 GB SSD, Intel HD 4000 graphics, 4 GB of RAM and Windows 7 Pro. It is worth noting that the maximum configuration of the tablet, which has more powerful hardware, will naturally show better results.

In terms of gaming performance, I have tested several popular titles from the app store, as well as a full-fledged PC video game - Diablo 3 and Mass Effect 3. With Fruit Ninja, Reckless Racing Ultimate and ADERA, an incredibly high-quality and interesting free-to-play game, there were no problems. , but with serious toys I had to tinker a little. The Diablo 3 installer worked only after enabling Windows 7 compatibility mode, and Mass Effect 3 had to be entered into compatibility mode after installation as well, because otherwise the game complained about incompatibility with the computer configuration and closed. In addition, the installation of the game through Origin was overshadowed by the fact that the download was constantly interrupted, as soon as the screen went out, and in the system settings I did not find how to make it not turn off. It is worth noting that both games allow you to run themselves in the tablet's native Full HD resolution, but in the case of the basic configuration of the Acer W700, I would recommend reducing the resolution in games to 1600x900 or lower in order to less load the Intel HD 3000, which is not the most productive graphics. Alas , at lower resolutions it is possible to start not in full screen, so you should first tinker in the settings and choose the optimal ones. In the maximum configuration of the device, it will already be possible to allow yourself to roam a little and set the highest resolution, and set the graphics settings to high-highest, instead of medium-high on the basic configuration. In general, you can play Mass Effect 3 and Diablo 3, but you can’t play the first game without a keyboard and mouse, so it makes sense to take an extended configuration with a docking station and a keyboard, but you can deal with the second one anyway . In general, if you want maximum performance and comfortable gaming in more or less modern desktop toys, then take the maximum version of the tablet and enjoy.

While playing games and working with programs, the tablet is quite noisy, however, during everyday use, the operation of the fans does not bother at all, and the case does not heat up much. As for autonomy, the manufacturer promises up to 8 hours on a single charge. In HD-video viewing mode, the tablet will last about 4-5 hours, in everyday use you can count on these same 8 hours, depending on the load. Nothing prevents you from planting a tablet and in a couple of hours, there would be a desire, as they say.

There are no special complaints about the operation of the device. The tablet works stably, performs its functions properly. Personally, I was a little annoyed by not the fastest wake-up of the device after pressing the power button to unlock the screen, but I think this issue can be fixed with various updates. The disadvantages include perhaps not the smallest weight, but the easily soiled screen, which every now and then got very dirty with me.

conclusions

By and large, we are more likely to have a personal computer than a tablet. The gadget can perfectly replace both a laptop and not the most powerful PC, which is long overdue to be replaced with something newer. Naturally, the maximum configuration of the device will allow you to use it more actively and experience less constraint in actions, whether it is running games or storing media files. In addition, the presence of a chic docking station, comfortable keyboard and a high-quality stylish cover will make using the tablet more enjoyable and varied. Everyone who wants to get the maximum stuffing from more or less mobile tablet, I would recommend exactly the top-end configuration, which is not so expensive compared to competitors' offers.

For example, Samsung sells Smart PC Pro in a plastic case without a docking station with a keyboard for 10 thousand more (15 if you count with the keyboard). Availability S Pen In a tablet, Samsung does not look like such a serious advantage compared to the Acer W700, which can boast a more interesting design, better case materials and a chic delivery set. Well, for not the most demanding users looking for just good tablet on the Windows base 8 is certainly worth a closer look at the junior configuration of the device, with which you have just had the honor to meet.

Part 1. Equipment, design, performance

Modern technologies allow manufacturers to create almost endless variations of products of different classes. For a tablet, they usually take a single-chip system, add several memory chips, charge it with a battery, sprinkle it with connectors, antennas, cameras and other trifles, and cover it with a touch screen. So actually with "invent and make" problems should not be. For example, look at the current catalog of Acer: it contains 17 lines of devices of the “laptop” class, and each line has several modifications (and even more than 40 (!) in one line).

But it is much more difficult then to sell your creation and make money on it. The key to the success of a particular product is a unique combination of characteristics and cost that will be of interest to a certain circle of consumers. It is almost impossible to achieve an accurate hit. Even if you conduct surveys and research, actively work with consumers, then by the time the model is released, it turns out that the market has already changed, and along with users and their needs, and competitors are not sitting still. The choice is also hampered by the fact that in most cases for any product you can find an analogue in which one or more characteristics will be better. On the other hand, there are noticeably more consumers (in quantitative terms) than models on the market, so even for the most unusual devices, if desired (and with the right pricing policy), buyers can be found. Examples here are "re-smartphones" with screens over five inches, or mobile workstations with powerful processors, RAID arrays, and a pair of professional video cards in the format of a very large and heavy laptop.

Interestingly, a similar situation occurs in other areas. You don't have to look far for examples: the recently introduced "All-new Range Rover" (by the way, this name also intersects with a well-known product in IT) combines unique off-road qualities and premium interior design. It's hard enough to imagine that style and comfort seekers would wad up to 90cm deep or need a 30° rollover angle. And vice versa - if you have already gone to ride on stones, then the presence of precious woods in the interior trim will hardly excite you.

Turning to the object of today's article, we can say that in terms of form factor it is a tablet, in terms of configuration it is a monoblock, and in terms of hardware configuration it is an ultrabook. Buying such an ambiguous device "just like that" is quite difficult. However, if the user clearly imagines the tasks and usage scenarios that need to be solved, then it may very well be that the Acer Iconia W700 will be the best choice for him.

Tablet packaging

The device comes in a fairly large box (44.5 × 24 × 12.6 cm) - for some models of modern laptops, a two-fold smaller version can be used. Considering that we are still considering a tablet, the large size of the package indicates a good bundle. And indeed it is. But first, let's talk a little about the design of the box. It is surprisingly very simple - a large photo with partial lamination and the name on the front side, barely visible options for mounting on a stand, the name of the tablet manufacturer and the Intel logo on the silver ends.

You can also notice a QR code for with a promotional video and a link to the product description. From it you can find out that in total there are three modifications of the W700 on the Russian market, differing in processor, solid-state drive capacity and equipment. Detailed configuration information specific device provided on a special sticker. In general, the box turned out to be quite stylish. But, in our opinion, it was still worth adding a little more bright elements. Moreover, the kit's weight of almost 4.5 kg still does not really match the "airy" design in white and silver tones.

Inside the main package in numerous compartments and boxes are: a tablet, a power supply and a cable, a leather case, a stand (two-piece) for stationary work, a wireless keyboard, a Micro-HDMI-VGA adapter, a white cloth for cleaning the screen, a quick start guide ( in Russian), a set of CDs with software. We will talk about the design of the tablet in the corresponding section, but here we will look at the rest of the delivery elements. The power supply looks good: a fairly small size, white matte plastic, a cable (also white) of about 180 cm with Velcro for packaging and a thin (3 mm) connector for connecting to a tablet. But this beauty is spoiled by a power cable - one meter, three cores of 0.75 mm², a three-pin plug that can withstand 16 A 250 V. It is very difficult to explain such a decision except for some features of local standards. Given that it requires 65 watts, something simpler and more convenient could be implemented.

The leather case has a beige color and a soft gray lining. It feels like it will be good to protect the tablet screen from damage. Installation is easy and the tablet stays firmly in the case. Of the additional design elements, there is a silver logo of the manufacturer. The package leaflet provides options for using the case as a stand. In total, there are three positions: one almost horizontal for working with the on-screen keyboard and two “higher” for watching videos and other similar operations.

When installed in a case, all tablet controls remain accessible and can be used. The only exception is the external camera: in normal mode, it is covered by a Velcro pocket. So if you suddenly want to take pictures with your hands on the road, you must not forget to open the lens. Maybe this is not very convenient, but there is additional protection. We also note the presence of a mount for a fountain pen or stylus (not included).

The complete stand is designed for installation in a stationary mode on a desktop. It consists of two elements, combining which different ways you can implement one of three options for placing the tablet: in portrait mode, in portrait mode with one of two tilt angles (for working with an external or on-screen keyboard). The elements themselves are made of matte white plastic, there is some silver paint and rubber inserts for a secure fit on the table. All controls and connectors on the tablet, except for the external camera and USB port, remain accessible. The speakers are provided with special holes for efficient sound transmission. The stand itself has an input for the power supply and an indicator of its connection, as well as three USB 3.0 ports. The latter are implemented through a hub and work only with external power.

Based on the foregoing, it seems that this design can be used as an office docking station with power, mouse, keyboard, portable drives, network adapters and other peripherals. But with an external monitor, not everything is so good - the Micro-HDMI connector remains only on the tablet itself, and simply docking the tablet will not be enough to connect an external device. In terms of design, in some cases, the possibility of smooth tilt adjustment or a more accessible USB port may not be enough, and the width of the front “corner” may seem too large.

An office PC suite would be incomplete without a keyboard. The Acer Iconia W700 uses an external wireless model with a Bluetooth interface. From the photographs, many will notice a similarity with the version of another well-known manufacturer, but in fact the similarity is precisely external. Case material of the considered keyboard - plastic. The main part is painted in silver color, the buttons themselves are matte white, the symbols on them are applied in black paint, additional functions highlighted in grey. On the top edge there are indicators for Bluetooth and charging level. To save batteries (2×AAA), a hardware power switch is provided. In case of loss of connection or the need to connect to another device, there is a “Connect” button. The bottom surface of the keyboard has rubber feet, on which it stands very firmly, despite its light weight (400 g). The possibility of changing the angle of inclination is not provided.

The physical dimensions of the keyboard correspond to the format of a tablet and 11.6″ laptops (field width - 277 mm, main buttons - 15 × 15 mm). A reasonable question arises: was it worth making a keyboard of this size and with only five rows of buttons? Because if we are talking about effective work on the table, then “more” (within reasonable limits) usually means “better”. Perhaps, in this case, the equipment is just such a compact option is justified. If the user needs it, he will be able to choose a suitable model for himself, and the standard one is fully functional as a semi-mobile version. Moreover, her weight is small (400 g with batteries). By the way, the orientation of the tablet on Windows 8 also affected this element: in addition to the usual keyboard shortcuts for controlling the player, brightness / volume and video output, the keyboard has several new ones for working in this version of the operating system.

It is a pity that they decided not to add a mouse. Perhaps here you can see the “hand of Microsoft”, which is trying to develop the popularity of the touch interface new version Windows. But for stationary use of a device with a relatively small screen size in a traditional operating system interface, a familiar mouse is still preferable today.

The final package note concerns the operating system and software recovery CDs. With the cost of a regular 32 GB USB 3.0 flash drive at 800 rubles, forcing the user to look for an optical drive somewhere in case of problems is at least strange. At the same time, there is no recovery partition with a full system image on the built-in drive, although this is good in terms of increasing available to the user volume.

Design

Anything other than "rounded rectangle" is very rare in tablets today. The Acer Iconia W700 was no exception. The dimensions of the device are about 295×192×12 mm, and the weight is 940 g. For a 11.6″ format, this is not bad, but it is difficult to compare these parameters with traditional tablets. These figures are more similar to those of some models of ultraportable laptops and ultrabooks, for example Acer Aspire S7. But it should be noted that the choice in this category is not so great.

The main body material is aluminium. The paint is not used, the matte finish turned out to be quite pleasant and beautiful. The grain is larger than known unibody devices, so it will be comfortable to hold the tablet. At the back, in the upper part, you can see a strip of white plastic, fortunately not glossy, behind which, apparently, there are antennas for wireless interfaces.

A little lower, on the left side, there is a 5 megapixel camera window, near which there is an indicator of its operation. The lens itself is slightly recessed, so you can safely put the tablet on the table.

The front side is almost completely devoted to the screen of the tablet, the manufacturer does not indicate the material of the outer coating. Around it - a low rubber side, which serves to protect the screen. Note that the case itself is noticeably larger than the matrix - the frame is about 2 cm at the top and sides, 2.5 cm at the bottom. At the top in the center is the front camera with an indicator of operation, and at the bottom is the Windows button, pressing which returns the user to the start screen of the Metro interface (hereinafter we omit the note "formerly known by the name").

On the top edge, there is a sliding non-latching screen rotation lock switch. Works rotation in applications that support this function, including the traditional desktop, the orientation is determined by the built-in sensor. Also visible here are two grids of the active cooling system. At the bottom you can see stereo speakers, and in the center there is a hidden button hard reset devices.

The left side was chosen for the microphone, Micro-HDMI output, USB 3.0 port and charger input. The last two connectors are used when docking the tablet.

On the right there is a power control button, it can be used to turn on / off and put the device to sleep / wake up. It has a built in charging indicator. battery, however, it does not work in all power saving modes, which is not very convenient. Just below there is a volume rocker and a standard headphone or headset jack. With some diligence next to them on the display frame, you can see the light sensor window.

In general, the design can hardly be called original, but the device looks quite attractive. A thin metal frame on the front side gives the tablet elegance. However, given its rather large size and thickness (visually it seems smaller due to the bevel on the bottom surface), I would like to see more ports: for example, USB, microSD or even Thunderbolt.

Making a tablet with an interesting and original design is not an easy task. Acer solved it, perhaps the most successfully of all manufacturers of Windows-based devices. The body of a relatively simple form, machined from a single piece of aluminum, looks strict and elegant.

True, the tablet turned out to be larger than other models with the Windows 8 operating system: the margins around the display are wider by about a centimeter in each direction. To disguise this not too pleasant fact from below, the metal comes to the front side, visually reducing the dimensions.

The physical Windows button is inscribed in this metal strip. In the photo below, you can see a thick damper that protects protective glass display from direct contact with metal.

There are only three communication connectors on the body of the tablet itself: a full-size USB 3.0, a Micro HDMI video output and a combined audio jack. With connection of periphery you will not clear up. There is no memory card reader at all - not even a micro format.

The kit includes an adapter from Micro HDMI to a full-size D-Sub (analog VGA) connector. So those who often make presentations on rented equipment should be calm.

The top side is entirely given over to the ventilation holes. Probably, the Iconia W700 cooling system is unified with the Aspire S7 ultrabooks: apparently, it has two fans, one of which works for intake, and the second for exhaust.

She doesn't make a lot of noise. But still, there is noise, while Winodws-tablets built on the Atom processor are simply devoid of the active component of the cooling system and operate completely silently.

On the underside of the tablet is a pair of speakers. They sound not God knows how high quality, but quite loud - at least if the tablet is correctly oriented.

The thing is that in order to hold a weighty tablet for a long time, willy-nilly, you have to use something as a support - as a rule, your own body. And if you put the Iconia W700 on your stomach or knees, the speakers are automatically covered by soft and dense, sound-not-very-permeable. You have to hold the tablet in a special way, slightly lifting the device above the palms slipped under it, so that the sound reflects from them. However, it is better to spit on these manipulations and do it easier: take headphones.

The tablet has two cameras. One of them is located in front and has a resolution of 1.3 megapixels - so it is only suitable for video calls.

The second, on the back of the case, is more serious: 5 megapixels, though without a flash.

The Acer Iconia W700 comes with several accessories. Firstly, it is a keyboard that communicates with the tablet via Bluetooth and thus saves one USB port. It works great (let's say the key mechanism is noticeably nicer than most laptops) and looks quite aesthetically pleasing from afar. But near the eyes, the extremely low-quality molding of the plastic keyboard casing hurts a lot.

The second accessory is a solid case of an amusing red color. The case looks good, feels good to the touch and can work as a stand. One problem: it weighs exactly like half a tablet - 470 grams.

Finally, the third valuable thing that can be found bundled with the Acer Iconia W700 is the docking station.

This is, in general, a rather simple thing: there are no complex electronics in it, there is only a USB hub that turns the tablet's only USB connector into three at once.

The body of the stand is completely plastic. Despite the fact that the docking station is obviously not too expensive, for some reason it is not supplied with all versions of the Iconia W700 - it is not included in the kit of the most affordable configuration (but there is a cover in all delivery options).

The leg on which it rests can be rearranged in such a way as to put the tablet upright.

At the bottom of the docking station, neat notches are made so that the plastic panel does not obscure the Windows button and speakers, which, we recall, are located at the bottom edge of the tablet case.

By the way, the maximum sound volume from the tablet can be obtained precisely when using the docking station: cutouts for the speakers in its case are arranged in such a way as to direct the sound towards the listener.

On the Russian market, the Acer Iconia W700 tablet is available in two versions. The younger one is equipped with a 64 GB drive and a Core i3-2365M processor. This is a previous generation processor, and even without Turbo Boost support - the frequency is limited to 1.4 GHz. The older configuration is equipped with a 128 GB SSD and a more powerful Core i5-3317U from a modern Intel line. The nominal frequency of this processor is 1.7 GHz, in Turbo Boost mode, it can overclock up to 2.6 GHz. It was this modification that visited us for testing.

In both versions, the tablet is equipped with 4 GB of non-replaceable DDR3-1333 RAM.

Graphics only integrated: Intel HD 3000 in the younger version and more productive HD 4000 in the older one.

User access to the filling in the tablet is completely not provided - neither the memory nor the solid-state drive can be replaced on its own. So when buying, you should think carefully about which version to give preference to.
