VoLTE is a gourmet voice technology. What is VoLTE in a smartphone What does the volte icon mean on a Samsung phone

VoLTE technology is the organization of voice transmission over LTE networks, as a result of which it becomes possible to make in these networks phone calls without switching communication technology.

How to enable VoLTE on Xiaomi

In Xiaomi smartphones, there are two options for enabling this option:

  • By entering a character-numeric combination *#*#86583#*#*;
  • Through the settings of the mobile device. To do this, go to the "SIM cards and mobile networks" subsection, where in the corresponding paragraph switch the "slider" to the active state.

In order to disable VoLTE on Xiaomi, it is enough to do the reverse operations.

Advantages of VoLTE:

Disadvantages of VoLTE

The technology is not widely used for the following main reasons:

  • Providing an increased load on the mobile device. To lower it, it is necessary to introduce a new algorithm of operation at the chipset level;
  • The need to switch to Volta mobile operators.

Causes of problems

Due to the weak implementation of technology VoLTE function may not be supported on Xiaomi, which can be explained by:

  • The lack of technology certification in the country where the Xiaomi smartphone is used;
  • The phone does not support this feature.

05.03.2019 Promotion has expired

In 2018, MTS began to actively promote in Russia new technology VoLTE communications. With its help, you connect with the subscriber almost instantly and at the same time hear the person as clearly as if he were next to you. How VoLTE works, which smartphones support this technology - we will tell in our material.

A few words about LTE

In order to understand what VoLTE is, you must first understand how LTE technology works. Long-Term Evolution is a modern standard for data transmission on the Internet, which is several times faster than a 3G connection. It is with its help that you can watch videos in HD quality without delay, download and upload large files.

Compare: download speed in LTE networks can reach up to 300 Mbps, and upload speeds up to 170 Mbps. While the average speed wired internet fluctuates around only 100 Mbps.

But for a long time, LTE had a significant limitation. This technology is designed only for data transmission, but not for voice. That is, if you are in an LTE network and receive incoming call, your gadget automatically switches to 2G/3G. This causes connection delay. In addition, the data rate that started in the LTE network is reduced. The solution to such problems was VoLTE technology.

VoLTE in smartphone

VoLTE (from English) Voice over LTE (Voice over LTE) converts your voice into a data stream, so you can make and receive calls over a high-speed IP channel. At the same time, the gadget does not waste time switching between communication systems, and therefore the connection takes place in 1–1.5 seconds. This technology has several significant advantages:

  1. High-quality sound transmission through support for a set of HD Voice codecs. If during conventional telephony the sound is transmitted at a frequency of up to 3400 Hz, then when calling via VoLTE, the sound range grows to 7000 Hz or more. That is, you hear human speech without interference and distortion.
  2. Simultaneous calls and data handling. Using VoLTE, you can simultaneously talk on the phone, view Instagram, download a movie, navigate the area using a navigator, and so on.
  3. Increased mobile network capacity. One base station can serve 3 times more subscribers via VoLTE than via 3G. So, you are not afraid of interruptions in communication due to telephone line overload.

Which smartphones support VoLTE?

VoLTE technology works on many modern gadgets from Apple, Samsung, Sony, Huawei and others. You can see the full list of models.

How to set up VoLTE on your smartphone

Calling over VoLTE is easy to set up. As a rule, the gadget after a software update turns on this mode automatically. If this does not happen, you can activate this option in the smartphone settings.

For Android smartphones:

Select the "SIM cards and mobile networks" section, find the "VoLTE HD call" command and switch it to active mode.

On the different models smartphones this section may differ in name.

For IOS smartphones:

Go to the "Settings" menu, select the " cellular”, then “Data Options”, find the command “Enable LTE” and switch it to active mode. If Voice & Data is disabled, enable it to enable VoLTE.

Important!

If you want to use VoLTE technology for calls to landline numbers, you need to dial the number in the format: +7-area code-phone number. When dialing a number in a short format, the advantages of the technology are lost: such a call will be transferred to the 2G / 3G network at your place of residence. Additionally, dialing the area code is not very convenient, but in this case, you will definitely get through to where you need to, while traveling around Russia and the world.

How much is it?

The same amount as regular calls via 2G/3G networks at the tariff you purchased. MTS does not provide any additional billing.

What should I do if my smartphone does not support VoLTE?

This does not mean that you need to urgently run to the nearest cell phone store for a new mobile phone. It is enough to download the branded MTS Connect application and you can call from anywhere in the world saving on the roaming component. It does not matter if your interlocutor has a similar application installed.

We also present to your attention a selection of publications about VoLTE technology.

At a time when it became necessary to transmit data over long distances, the pursuit of speed began. The Megafon company was one of the first to install new format connections in their communications. Voice transmission technologies over a distance have reached a new level, and now it has become possible to make calls using LTE technology. And this is done using VoLTE technology. What is VoLTE, what is it for, what are the advantages and disadvantages, and how to start using it, you can learn from this article.

What is VoLTE technology and why is it needed?

VoLTE (VoiceoverLTE - literally “voice over LTE”) is a fourth-generation communication technology that allows you to make calls over 4G networks.

Until recently, even in the 4G coverage area, calls were made according to the following scheme: the phone switched from 4G to 3G or 2G mode, packet data transmission was stopped until the end of the call, and then resumed. Now, thanks to VoLTE technology, data transfer does not stop, and the call takes place directly over 4G networks.

As we can see from the graph, VoLTE technology is gaining more and more popularity around the world.

Less than a year ago, she reached Russia. On the this moment four largest operator: Megafon, MTS, Beeline and Tele2. MegaFon was one of the first to start transmitting voice signals via LTE and is rightfully considered one of the leaders in high-quality voice signal transmission.

At the moment, VoLTE technology is available only in Moscow and the Moscow region. When roaming, it is recommended to turn off VoLTE in the phone settings in order to reduce the load on the phone, which will look for 4G if this is not deactivated.

Many people may ask: if the technology uses a 4G connection, does this mean that you can make free calls over the internet? and is traffic used during a voice connection?

Not. Calls can still be made free of charge, but only through third party programs, like Skype, a call over a 4G network is made and paid in the same way as a call in 2/3G networks, and when using it, Internet traffic is not consumed.

The technology works like 3G, works automatically and does not require a separate connection. However, not all smartphones support it. Below you can find list of smartphones supporting VoLTE technology:

  • iPhone - starting from iPhone models 6 and above;
  • Google Nexus - starting with the Nexus 5 model;
  • Samsung - since Galaxy S4;
  • Sony Xperia- starting with the Xperia Z2, as well as many other phones.

VoLTE technology not compatible using the services Personal beep», « AntiAON" and " One-time AntiAON».

Advantages

  1. Superior sound quality compared to others: 2nd and 3rd generation networks are limited to 16Kbps for bit rate and audio quality. The use of HD Voice technologies in VoLTE technology improves sound quality, gives volume to the voice and reduces the amount of interference and noise.
  2. Possibility of simultaneous transmission of data and voice: in 2 and 3G networks, operators did not allow calling and using Internet services at the same time, since this increased the load on the network and significantly reduced the quality of communication. Now it is possible to transmit voice via LTE directly due to less capacious manipulations with transmission networks.
  3. Voice over LTE technology reduces the load on the network by 3 times compared to 3G transmission and 6 times compared to 2G. This is due to the larger amount of data that base stations can receive. The lower the communication generation, the smaller the amount of data to be processed simultaneously.
  4. More high speed connections: When using 4G while making a call, the phone was supposed to switch to 2/3G mode depending on the called party. This transition can take up to twenty seconds. With VoLTE technology, the need for this transition is eliminated, and the connection occurs in 2-4 seconds.

disadvantages

But, VoLTE also has disadvantages that are not visible at first glance:

  1. Increasing the load on the phone A: To take on the simultaneous load of receiving a call and transmitting data, the phone must have a powerful filling, so only users of the latest generations of smartphones can use VoLTE technology.
  2. The need to be able to call via VoLTE for both subscribers: no, those who use VoLTE can make calls to other networks, but then the declared sound quality, which is positioned as an advantage, is not guaranteed. With different networks of use, the connection speed will increase, Internet access will be opened, but the sound quality will remain the same.

On a phone without VoLTE support, it simply will not connect, even with the capabilities of a SIM card.

How to start using

To start using VoLTE technology, you just need to buy a Megafon SIM card and have a phone that supports it. Most of the SIM cards sold now are equipped with networks latest generation, which are activated when they enter the coverage area.

To find out if your SIM card supports 4G technology, you can use the service team *570#[call button].

For 4G calls, you need to change your phone settings:

  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Data options → Turn on LTE → Voice and data.
  • LG Stylus 3, LG X Power 2, LG K10 2017: Settings → Networks → Advanced → Mobile networks → VoLTE.
  • samsung galaxy: VoLTE is automatically enabled in new firmware.
    Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → VoLTE calls.
  • Sony Xperia: VoLTE is automatically enabled in the new firmware.
    Settings → More → Mobile network → Turn on VoLTE or
    Notification panel → Quick Options→ Enable VoLTE.

You can determine that you are in a 4G coverage network and make a call through it by the following icons on the phone screen:

You can get acquainted with the webinar, in which you will get the opportunity to learn the technical component of VoLTE technology, in the document attached below.

studying specifications modern phones and smartphones you can find such a term as VoLTE. Obviously, the meaning of this term is somehow connected with 4G and LTE networks, but most users do not understand the specific purpose of VoLTE (VOL LTE). In this article, we will try to close this gap in knowledge and tell you what VoLTE is in a phone or smartphone, what it is for and how it works.

In order to understand what VoLTE is, you must first explain the meaning of the term LTE. The abbreviation stands for Long-Term Evolution, which can be translated as long-term development.

In fact, this means new standard wireless transmission information for phones, smartphones and other mobile devices. This standard provides the user Mobile Internet at a much higher speed than 3G, it allows you to download large files, watch high-definition videos, organize online broadcasts and much more.

Theoretically, LTE communication can provide the user with an Internet connection with a download speed of up to 326.4 Mbps and an upload speed of up to 172.8 Mbps. For comparison, a typical Internet speed at wired connection is a speed of 100 Mbps.

What is VoLTE in a smartphone

The abbreviation VoLTE (VOL LTE) stands for Voice over LTE, which can be translated into Russian as "Voice over LTE". It is a technology designed to transmit voice over mobile network LTE.

The fact is that LTE networks are designed exclusively for data transmission. Voice transmission in LTE, as it was in 2G and 3G networks, is simply not provided. Therefore, when you need to make a call, the phone is forced to switch from LTE to 3G, which creates some delay when calling the subscriber. Also, with such a switch, the process of transmitting and receiving data over LTE was stopped.

To solve these problems, VoLTE technology was developed. This technology allows you to transmit voice in the LTE network, turning it into a data stream.

  • Better sound transmission. When calling via VoLTE, the interlocutor's voice sounds clear and natural, without distortion, which is typical for 2G and 3G networks.
  • Simultaneous data and voice transmission. While on a VoLTE call, you can continue to send and receive data. This is useful if you are using your phone as a GPS navigator or live streaming.
  • Quick connection. VoLTE support avoids switching from LTE to 3G and vice versa, which significantly speeds up the call time to the subscriber.

As far as billing is concerned, calls using Voice over LTE are usually billed in the same way as regular calls over a 3G network. In this case, the transmitted data is not included in the user's Internet traffic. But, it is better to check with your mobile operator.

Which smartphones support VoLTE

Now almost all modern flagship smartphones support LTE. For example, such support is available in the following models:

  • iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X;
  • Sony Xperia XZ1, Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, Sony Xperia XA1, Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra, Sony Xperia XA1 Plus, Sony Xperia XA2, Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra, Sony Xperia X, Sony Xperia X Performance, Sony Xperia XZ, Sony Xperia X Compact, Sony Xperia XZs, Sony Xperia XZ Premium, Sony Xperia L2, Sony Xperia XZ, Sony Xperia X, Sony Xperia XZ2, Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact;
