Smartphone xiaomi mi4 instruction manual. Detailed review of Xiaomi Mi4i

Xiaomi has released a new smartphone - Mi4i, which should occupy a niche between the company's budget phones and flagships - that is, in fact, the model is a representative of the middle class. It would be logical to assume that the Mi4i is a successor to the Mi4, but this is not the case. The similarity is only external; technically, the smartphones are completely different.
Like the vast majority of Xiaomi products, the smartphone turned out to be first-class. Perhaps in terms of performance this is not the best powerful smartphone, but it touches the soul in something completely different: excellent build quality and the body itself, a gorgeous Full HD screen, an excellent camera and a capacious battery. And these are just the main advantages! Don't forget about high-quality sound in headphones, good GPS performance and high quality communications. The fly in the ointment was the lack of memory expansion options, but if you use the space wisely without filling up the entire space with games, then 16 GB is enough. Moreover, there is the Mi Cloud service, with which you can synchronize photos and not keep them all on your phone. And no one canceled otg...
The review contains detailed information about each function of the smartphone, photos of the appearance, tests for performance, autonomy, GPS tests, examples of pictures and videos taken with the smartphone’s camera, screenshots of interfaces, as well as firmware and a small crash test...

First of all, I suggest you familiarize yourself with the technical characteristics:

Packaging, accessories

The packaging is traditional for Xiaomi products - a heavy-duty box made from recycled paper. On the front there is only the Mi logo, on the back there is information about the manufacturer, product, specifications and a special stamp confirming the authenticity of the product.
The equipment is minimal: smartphone, Charger And usb cable. Also in the box you can find a warranty card, a manual and a special key for removing the tray with SIM cards.

Chinese type charger with three flat contacts. An adapter is required for use in our countries. Charging issues maximum current 2A, does not produce any extraneous noise or odors during operation. At maximum load it remains slightly warm. Mi4i supports fast charging: can gain up to 40% charge in an hour, and 100% in 3 hours.

Micro USB cable with dense braiding and a small instruction manual describing the main controls of the smartphone

An unfilled warranty card from which it is clear that the smartphone is under warranty for 1 year, accessories for 6 months. If the smartphone breaks down during this period, you should contact the store, because they must fulfill their obligations to the client. Sending is at your own expense. It is also worth considering that if you changed the firmware of your smartphone not via OTA, it may be voided from warranty.

On the reverse side is the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) value. In Europe, the norm is considered to be no more than 2W/Kg. For example, in the USA the SAR indicator is more stringent - 1.6 W/Kg. And in Russia, permissible radiation is measured in W/cm2 (it is 10 μW/cm2) and it is not possible to convert it into SAR, but experts say that in general the requirements are even stricter than in Europe and the USA. Anyway SAR Xiaomi Mi4i is 0.598 W/Kg(maximum value), which is much lower than any norm. This is a very good indicator, but not unique - most good branded smartphones have an SAR of 0.5W/Kg - 0.6W/Kg. Although, for example, the flagship iPhone 6 has a SAR indicator of 0.99 W/Kg, which already borders on the maximum permissible level.

Appearance

The design is recognizable, almost no different from the flagship Mi4. With the exception of materials, the body of the mi4i is completely plastic, but in my opinion this only benefits it. The matte surface is pleasant to the touch, the plastic is high quality. The battery of the smartphone is not removable, so the back cover cannot be removed, thanks to which the manufacturer has achieved a monolithic product. No matter how you twist it or press it, the body does not make a single sound. At all The design of all Xiaomi products can be characterized in two words - premium simplicity. On the one hand, I look at the smartphone and understand - nothing special, an ordinary rectangle with rounded edges. But when I use it, I understand that everything is thought out to the smallest detail, the curves are exactly where they should be, the size is ideal, the thickness is minimal. On this moment 2 colors available: black and white, the color concerns the back cover - the front part is black in any case. I chose black, which is actually grey.

The smartphone fits perfectly in the hand, in most cases you can use it with one hand. Not slippery, even if your hands are sweaty - the device does not try to jump out onto the asphalt. The 5-inch diagonal is currently the most relevant for smartphones.

Judging by the images on the Internet, other colors should appear. At a minimum - replaceable back covers. Yes, you can still remove the cover, although not easily. To do this, you need a sharpened pick or a credit card, which you need to insert into the slot and carefully pry, opening the latches. At the moment there are no replacement back covers on sale, but personal experience I’ll say - it’s not far off. And this is great news for people like me - for those who hate cases. I’d rather order a back cover from Aliexpress in half a year or a year, which will cost the same as a case. This way you can enjoy the delights of design and thickness without worrying about scratches and abrasions on the back cover. In addition, you can order a cover of a different color, thereby giving your smartphone a new life.

But those who can’t imagine using their phone without a case have something to rejoice about. The choice of cases is huge: from transparent silicone, colored rubber, leather bags and flips to metal bumpers.
But let's get back to the appearance. The buttons are located on the right side: the volume rocker is slightly higher, the lock is lower. Very convenient to use with one hand.

Headphone jack - at the top

Micro USB connector at the bottom. Here you can also see the microphone hole.

The back is extremely simple: smooth matte coating does not attract fingerprints and does not slip. At the top there is a lens of the main 13 megapixel camera with a flash, at the bottom there is an audio speaker grille. There is also a company logo on the lid - mi

The flash installed here is not a simple one, but with two diodes. One shines in the cold spectrum, the other in the warm spectrum. With such a flash, night photos turn out more natural and not blue.
You can also notice a small hole in the camera - this is second microphone which works like noise reduction. This function can be enabled on your smartphone and then the interlocutor will hear you clearly, even if you are in a very noisy place.

At the bottom under the speaker you can see a small drawing. It is needed so that when you put the phone on the table, the sound is not muffled, but spreads in space.

The smartphone comes without a protective film. Only a transport one, but it has inscriptions on it, so I immediately threw it away. Regarding glass, the description states that used Corning Concore Glass. According to information from the official website, such glasses are installed using OGS technology. Concore is 8-10 times more scratch resistant and 5 times more compressive than soda-lime glass (which is used in most phones with OGS technology). Scratch resistance is similar to Gorila Glass. The glass is one with the touchpad and if the first one is damaged, the whole glass must be replaced. In addition, an oleophobic coating is applied to the glass. Therefore, for myself, I decided to purchase additional protective glass, which are already on sale. Protective glass from Nillkin costs about $9 and will solve the scratch problem forever. By the way, it also has an oleophobic coating. You can buy a noname without oleophobia for $3 -$4.
There is a speaker at the top of the screen. To the right of it is the front camera and LED event indicator. The event indicator can light up in 7 different colors, but the main ones are red, blue and green. You can assign different colors to different events. To the left of the speaker are light and proximity sensors.

The SIM card tray is located on the left side. To remove the tray, you need a special key, which is inserted into the hole with a little effort, after which the tray opens. The smartphone supports 2 SIM cards, format - micro. Mi4i supports 2g, 3g and 4g networks. There is no memory expansion slot in the smartphone.

Small crash test

He came out on his own and, as they say, by accident. Trying to hold several objects in my hands at the same time, I could not hold the most valuable one and from a height of about one and a half meters it fell onto the asphalt right on the corner. From personal experience, I know that most often such falls end in replacing the display, so I managed to get really scared and mentally regret that I don’t carry a smartphone in a case like most people. But when I picked it up and turned it on, my heart felt lighter. The smartphone worked, the screen held up. But the first “battle scar” appeared on the body in the form of a mark from the asphalt.

Display

The smartphone has a 5-inch Full HD Sharp/JDI display with good color reproduction, viewing angles and high detail. The pixel density is 441, making the image on the screen look amazing. Everything that happens on the screen is clearly visible even in bright sunny weather thanks to high contrast and technology OGS full lamination. In my opinion, the screen of the Xiaomi Mi4i is in no way inferior even to flagships that are equipped with similar displays. Good screen This is the key to enjoying your smartphone, because you will be working with it most of the time.

The picture looks very colorful, but at the same time natural, the colors are not “acidic”, like, for example, super AMOLED. When tilted, the picture is not inverted and colors are not distorted.

This is what it looks like in daylight

As I said above, the screen is scratch resistant. After a month of use, not a single scratch appeared on the screen. The sensor is very soft and responds to the slightest touch. Multi-touch recognizes 10 simultaneous touches.

The touch keys have a milky backlight. The brightness and time of the backlight can be adjusted in the phone settings.

You can also adjust the contrast and color temperature.

There is also an RGB event indicator, which can also be customized to suit your needs. In addition, it can be completely disabled.

System operation. Firmware. Updates.

Xiaomi Mi4i runs on Android 5.0.2 operating system. But the smartphone does not have pure Android installed, but MIUI, which significantly expands the standard functionality and capabilities of the system. Probably many have already seen this shell, and those who have not seen it have heard about it. There are a lot of advantages over standard Andrew. They mainly concern convenience and settings. You can customize almost everything in MIUI. You need to get used to it a little, because the layout of the menu and other controls is somewhat unusual, but if you get used to it and feel all the “tricks”, you will never want to return to stock Android.
Initially, the smartphone came with MIUI firmware 16.5.5.0. This is the official Russified firmware. Russian language is set by default, there is a market and Google applications. But unfortunately, I immediately went to the forum for another firmware, because this one had spam built into it. The browser kept opening some pages without my knowledge. After a quick study of the issue, I realized that installing the firmware on this smartphone is very simple. First of all, you need to install a modified TWRP recovery, which can be installed using Mi4i Toolkit. After that, download the firmware you are interested in, transfer it to the phone’s memory and install it through recovery. I installed firmware 5.7.24 from MUIPRO. This is an unofficial, but so-called weekly firmware. It turned out to be very good, stable, no spam and with some improvements. And 2 weeks later, an over-the-air update 5.8.6 was released, which I downloaded and installed from my phone. Now the store sends it with a proven firmware, without spam - only the first versions had advertising. In any case, for those who like to flash, this is paradise)) Firstly, it’s simple, and secondly, there are a lot of firmwares. In addition to MIUI, there is CM, and MIUI V7 should appear one of these days.
It’s also easy to get to the device ROOT rights, the same Mi4i Toolkit will help for this. More detailed instructions It’s better to look at 4pda, where a huge community has already gathered and all the information on smartphone firmware is available.

Thanks to the huge number various topics, available for download and installation, you can make your smartphone more individual. Most themes are free. You can also change wallpaper, transition effects, loxrin, etc. separately. There is no menu in MIUI, all applications are available on the desktop, you can create folders.

MIUI has its own audio player, which has everything you need. Playback is displayed on the lock screen, and there is a highly customizable equalizer. The sound of the player is excellent, I used to use poweramp all the time - now I don’t even install it. The same applies to the camera application - various settings, effects - the application is developed for the MIUI shell.

Connection. Wireless interfaces. GPS.

Sometimes manufacturers forget that the main function of a phone is to make calls, and having a powerful processor and high performance, the devices are often not suitable for communication. But this is not the case. XIAOMI tried their best: the speaker is very High Quality . You can hear your interlocutor clearly and there is a very large volume reserve. Already at 60% volume I can hear normally in a quiet environment. At maximum volume, you don’t even have to put it to your ear)) At the same time, the speaker produces clear, wheezing-free sound. The interlocutor will also hear you very well, the microphone is sensitive. In addition, there is a second microphone - noise reduction, and even on a noisy street you will be heard well during a conversation. By default, noise reduction is enabled, but the second microphone can be disabled through the settings. The signal reception level is normal, the connection is not interrupted, the signal is stable and strong. Catches at the level of other high-quality smartphones.
Bluetooth - works as expected, tested in conjunction with the Vidonn X6 fitness bracelet.
WiFi reception is very reliable, almost everywhere in the apartment there is a maximum signal level. Next in order: in the room with the router, the next room - 1 wall, the far room - 2 walls. Usually, in the back room, smartphones show an average signal level (mid-yellow), and if the antenna is weak, it’s even worse. Here we see an impressive result.

At the same time, the download speed is high. Essentially limited only by my tariff plan)

GPS also works very well. But in principle I didn’t doubt it, because I know from personal experience that there are no problems with GPS on Snapdragon. Xiaomi Mi4i just confirmed this once again. Sees GPS satellites, GLONASS and Beidou - a complete set. The connection occurs almost instantly - a couple of seconds, after which it can find up to 30 satellites. Usually about 15 - 20 are active. The accuracy is high from 1 to 3 meters. It sees satellites even in bad weather (though less and the accuracy drops somewhat). As a navigator, a smartphone is ideal. It leads along the road very accurately, tested on Yandex navigator, Navitel and the “my tracks” application. The tracker shows the exact location on the map, which coincides with the real road. It doesn’t “throw” into houses, everything is very accurate. Navigation is also helped by a large number of sensors and sensors: there are magnetic sensor(compass works), gyroscope.

Performance. Benchmarks, tests.

So, the smartphone has a processor from snapdragon - 2nd gen Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core 64-bit, paired with an Adreno 405 video accelerator. This combination cannot be called a flagship, but it is a current solution. The performance is more than enough for absolutely any task, including modern 3D games. The smartphone itself has 2 operating modes: productive and balanced. A high-performance one may be required only for particularly powerful games, but at the same time it consumes more battery power and significantly heats up the smartphone at maximum load. Constant overheating can lead to degradation of the screen, a decrease in the useful capacity of the battery, and simply makes using the smartphone uncomfortable. The balanced mode slightly lowers the processor frequency, which can cause some games to slow down, but the smartphone does not heat up, and the battery is consumed much more economically. I don’t play 3D shooters, but for simpler games the balanced mode is enough. There is no difference in the modes in the operation of the system interfaces, the browser. Modes are switched via a pop-up menu.
In benchmarks, the smartphone performs well, scoring high results. Yes, similar performance is provided by MTK smartphones, which cost much less ($160 - $170), but they get terribly hot and most often these indicators remain only on paper. Xiaomi Mi4i scores about 40,000 points in Antutu.

Its performance is comparable to last year's flagship Xiaomi Mi4, in comparison with which our hero is better in all respects, except for the video accelerator, which is significantly inferior.

Detailed information from antutu

The variety of sensors available is simply impressive

Other benchmarks:

Other benchmarks

Well, in reality, all this performance can be described as follows: the system works quickly, the screens turn smoothly, without jerking. There is enough power to spare to quickly process Full HD screen resolution in a browser, games, or system. All the games that I installed for testing worked on maximum settings graphics without stuttering. I don’t play much on my phone, just the new version of Angry Birds 2 as a time killer, but for the test I installed and played a little of the following games: Minion Rush, Dragon Hills, Asphalt 8, Goodfire. All games went great. Of all those listed, in my opinion, the most powerful in terms of graphics is goodfire; you can see its playability in the video, which is available at the end of the review.
Surfing the Internet, viewing websites, videos, etc. - all this happens comfortably and quickly thanks to the good volume random access memory- 2Gb, of which 1.1Gb is available

In general, the model is technically well equipped. There is only one fact that upsets me, which in my opinion is the only drawback of the smartphone - no memory expansion slot. Mi4i has 16 Gb of memory and that’s enough for me personally. But for some people this may not be enough, and it is not possible to expand it. A version with 32 GB of memory will be sold soon, but it will cost a little more. 16 is enough for me - I don’t watch movies on my smartphone, I rarely play games. The memory is mainly used for mp3 and photo-video taken on the phone. In addition, the Mi Cloud service partially helps solve the problem of lack of space. This is cloud synchronization, for example, all photos and videos from my phone are automatically synchronized via WiFi with the storage and you don’t have to store everything on your phone, periodically deleting what you don’t need. And from the storage you can occasionally transfer it to your computer or somewhere else, after sorting the pictures.

Multimedia capabilities. Sound. Photo and video.

I'll start with the sound. The general speaker through which audio is played is located on the back of the phone. The sound is clear, without wheezing at maximum volume. General volume level - high, at maximum incoming call You can clearly hear it even in your bag. There is a small protrusion on the back cover near the speaker, thanks to which even if the smartphone is lying on the table, the sound is not muffled by the case. The speaker reproduces mostly high and mid frequencies. There are few lows, but the overall sound is balanced.
For music lovers and simply those who like to listen to music through headphones, there is good news - the smartphone is very pleased with its sound, it is one of the few Chinese smartphones, which satisfied my audio needs. Perhaps a high-quality audio chip is used, the sound is balanced, powerful, with a sufficient amount of low-end. The bass is soft but powerful. Mid frequencies are clearly expressed, in sufficient quantity and high, ringing. In the settings there is an equalizer, with which you can adjust the sound to your preferences, there are also ready-made presets, you can configure everything manually. In addition, I was pleased to have large quantity profiles for different headphones to achieve maximum high-quality sound. For example, by choosing the profile of the Mi Pistons 2 headphones and using these headphones, you can fully unleash their potential. And with my favorite earbuds from the aurora 2 tablet, I liked the “regular headphones” profile, where they give out the most low frequencies. In any case, everyone can choose something based on their tastes and preferences.

Let's move on to the camera. The manufacturer claims a Sony/Samsung camera, f/2.0, capable of taking pictures in a maximum resolution of 13 mp. You can select one of the preset effects on the camera. Focusing is fast and accurate. There is a flash with two LEDs: one with cool colors, the other with warm colors. This allows for more natural night shots. Overall, the camera is of a very decent standard and copes equally well with macro photography, landscape photography and portrait photography.
Below are examples of pictures taken with a smartphone camera: (photos have been reduced in size for uploading to the website)

Video can be recorded in full HD quality 1920x1080 at 30 frames per second. Video format Mp4. In my opinion, it shoots well, there is stabilization. When recording video, you can also use effects, there is slow-motion and accelerated shooting. A short video to evaluate the quality:

Autonomy, operating time on one charge

The manufacturer installed a non-removable battery with a capacity of 3120 mah in the smartphone, which, considering the thickness and size of the smartphone, looks like an amazing result. The official website provides the following data: on a single charge, the smartphone can play 11 hours of video or 35 hours of calls on a 3G network or 59 hours of listening to music. But what do we have in reality? I would like to immediately warn you that the operating time varies somewhat depending on the firmware, but in general you can understand the picture. So, first of all, I ran the Antutu battery test on the firmware that was originally on the phone. The brightness is in the middle position, auto brightness mode is turned on. The smartphone's operating mode is balanced. The test results surprised me, to put it mildly. During the test, the processor temperature did not exceed 41 degrees.

The test took more than 6 hours! In terms of results, it even outperformed the THL5000 that I used previously. But as I already said, I had to change the firmware because of advertising, and on the new firmware the test result came out a little worse. However, it is still impressive!

I also tested the battery using geekbench 3

Well, okay, the result is good in synthetics, but what about in reality? - I thought. I decided to conduct the next test using looped video playback. And the result was 11 and a half hours of continuous playback. Even a little more than promised)

The next test is online playback from YouTube. 6 hours 40 minutes of continuous playback.

The latter is, of course, use in real conditions. With active use with the Internet always on, it lasts me for 2 days. With more moderate use, the device lasts up to 5 days.
Here is an example of real use. The smartphone lasted almost 3 days, during which time I often used the Internet, listened to music on it, and spoke quite a lot. The total screen time was more than 4 hours, 1 hour 35 minutes - conversations, some games, photo and video shooting.

In addition, I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the video version of the review, where you can watch the launch of games, the operation of the smartphone live, and much more:

It's time to take stock. The smartphone is not cheap, but in my opinion it is worth every cent. Great looks, up to date performance, superb screen, fast and accurate gps, capacious battery, a quality camera is only main advantages.
Unfortunately, the smartphone is not perfect, and has several disadvantages:
1) There is no memory expansion slot
2) In “productive” mode it overheats during heavy games
3) Inadequate software. In early firmware, some problems are possible; some users note stuttering when overheating. Personally, I recommend firmware from muipro 5.7.24 or 5.8.6 - in my opinion these are the most stable firmware.

The smartphone was purchased with my own money, but at a significant discount, therefore:

The product was provided for writing a review by the store. The review was published in accordance with clause 18 of the Site Rules.

I'm planning to buy +18 Add to favorites I liked the review +44 +83

The smartphone display is the most common cause of gadget malfunction and, probably, the most unpleasant breakdown. If the display malfunctions, they most often turn to repair services, but it’s worth this procedure It’s not cheap, so we’ll look at replacing Xiaomi Mi4 glass at home. You will need a minimum supply of tools, as well as a little patience and accuracy. If you are unsure of your abilities, we recommend contacting a service center to have the problem repaired.

The main reasons for screen breakage:

  • Mechanical damage. Protective film or a case cannot guarantee the safety of the smartphone glass with 100 percent probability. When glass breaks, it is not as scary as when the display matrix is damaged, which is accompanied by multiple colored stripes on the screen and incorrect operation of the sensor.
  • Moisture ingress. If the phone is dropped in water or gets wet in the rain, there is a high chance that the display will not function fully. In this case, it will be necessary to replace the display module
  • Faulty cable. Assembling a phone from low-quality materials can lead to the fact that already in the first year of use the cable will stop working, and at the same time the image will no longer be displayed on the phone screen. The reason for the malfunction of the cable can also be the active use of the phone, during which the display cable can be disconnected from the connector due to a slight impact, for example, when dropped on a table or sofa.

Replacing the display module

Before starting repairs you need to have everything necessary tools to disassemble the phone and safe removal its components.

Required tools:

  • Plastic spatula (if you don’t have a tool, you can use a plastic card)
  • Tweezers
  • Plastic spatula (a regular guitar pick will also work)
  • crosshead screwdriver
  • Scalpel
  • Sucker

Instructions for replacing the display step by step

  1. The first step is to remove the SIM card and memory card from the phone. To open the SIM card slot, a simple paperclip will do.
  2. After removing the SIM card, remove the back cover of the phone; to do this, attach the suction cup to the bottom of the cover and carefully remove it, being careful not to damage the latches. If there is no suction cup, then you can pry the lid with a plastic spatula and carefully walk along its entire contour.
  3. Under the back cover there is a protective frame that is attached to the phone with 8 screws. Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew them all. We pry the frame around the entire perimeter with a plastic spatula or a bank card, and then carefully remove it.
  4. We see under the frame back panel phone. Now you need to disconnect the battery, which is connected by two cables running through the entire length of the battery. Using a plastic spatula, disconnect both cables, then carefully and slowly peel the cable off battery phone. We take out the battery to make it easier - you can lightly pull the manufacturer's label, which is pasted on the battery.
  5. Use a spatula to disconnect the display cable, which is located slightly to the left of the battery cables. At the top of the phone there is a cable for the screen and speaker; they also need to be removed. In the upper left part of the motherboard there is a display cable, which is attached to a bolt. Let's take it out last.
  6. Use a spatula to pry system board. We turn the board over and see that it is attached to the phone with a coaxial cable; it is disconnected using a regular spatula.
  7. Remove the display module. Using a hairdryer, warm up the front part of the screen. The hairdryer should be kept at a minimum distance from the screen and no more than one minute. Using a plastic card or spatula, we go over the entire contour of the display. It is recommended to use a suction cup to easily remove the module.
  8. Using a scalpel, clean the surface of the phone from any remaining glass glue. The work on dismantling the screen has been completed.
  9. Attaching the working display module and assembling the Xiaomi Mi4 phone is done in the reverse order.
