Great model. After buying a laptop, I realized that stationary computers never touch! And after buying Asus, I realized: the less - the better! I use it at work, for surfing. There is enough battery charge. In short, I really like it and the battery and the hard one are enough! Everything is super, I carry it in my bag all the time.

    1. Mobility. 2. Sufficient performance (they work normally, without brakes and glitches ms office, not the one that was installed initially, but usual 2003, 1C 7.7, there are no problems with Wi-Fi and a browser, alcohol has risen normally). 3. Price. I expected the worst from the keyboard and the screen - but no, everything is OK, I need to get used to the keyboard a little.

For office work and the Internet - the best choice. It copes with MS Office 2007 perfectly, the browser flies. You can also play old games. The advantages also include small size and weight. Carrying with you is a pleasure. Bright screen, stable Wi-Fi, the system boots up in less than a minute, good keyboard, sensitive touchpad.

Perhaps this is one of those very close to the ideal of a mobile device. The fact that inside the SSD allows me, as a user, to drop it without the risk of losing data, I fell on it twice and nothing, and most importantly - the size. 22 centimeters to the detriment of the keyboard just fit it into any bag for A5 notebooks, which is important for a student. The battery holds as long as necessary for autonomous work- 4 hours with disconnected communications, so as a companion in study it is the most. We demolish Linkus and install a finely honed WinXP on a 4GB disk, it works tolerably. There are enough capacities for the same purpose, for which communicators and office computers were invented.

The Eee PC 900 is the sweet spot in ASUS 'subnotebook lineup. Combining only 990 grams of weight with a very modest size, it has a 9 ”screen with physical resolution at 1024x600 pixels, allowing you to comfortably perform most everyday tasks. But the keyboard, although it has increased in size compared to the younger models, has not become much more convenient for typing and still requires a lot of time to adapt. Of course, we cannot fail to mention the multitouch that appeared in the Eee PC 900 - useful function for a small touchpad subnotebook. This model comes preinstalled with Xandros Linux, specially adapted to save space on a small screen. In general, the system leaves a pleasant impression, but its interface, created by ASUS, is not very functional, and op

ASUS Eee PC 900 is the continuation of the Eee PC line, this time with a 9-inch screen. But was this sequel as successful as the first model? The first-generation ASUS Eee PC with a 7-inch display was an immediate success, but it also had its drawbacks. The most significant of them is a tiny 7-inch screen with a ridiculous resolution of 800x480 pixels. Fortunately, ASUS decided not to stand still and announced the release of several improved Eee PC models at once. One of them - the Eee PC 900 - fell into our hands.

    Configuration

Screen: 8.9 inches, 1024x600 pixels, matte CPU: Intel Celeron M 353 900 MHz Graphics adapter: Intel GMA900 RAM: 1 GB HDD: 4 + 8 GB SSD Wireless adapters: Broadcom BCM92045 (Wi-Fi b / g) Expansion ports: 3xUSB, VGA, LAN Card reader: SD / MMC Dimensions (edit): 225x170x34 mm Weight: 990g (with 4400mAh battery) Operating system: Windows XP Home The Linux version is generally the same, but the size of the second SSD is increased to 16 GB. A very nice carrying case is supplied with the laptop:

    Appearance and design features

Externally, ASUS Eee PC 900 is very similar to its predecessor, model 701. The main difference is the enlarged screen. The speakers, which were previously located on the sides of the display, have moved to the bottom. Thanks to the normal-sized screen, the laptop immediately began to look much more solid, "grown-up".

It is difficult to say something about the design in general: some will probably like it, some will not. The plastic of the case is of sufficient quality, with a pearlescent sheen. Oddly enough, no fingerprints remain on it.

The location of the ports is exactly the same as that of its predecessor. At the back is only a charger socket, on the right are two USB, VGA and a card reader, on the left is LAN, a third USB and audio jacks.

    Dimensions and weight

The overall dimensions remain the same, that is, very small. The Eee PC 900 is quite comparable to a small paperback book or a pair of DVDs in standard boxes.

Bottom up: IBM ThinkPad X30, ASUS Eee PC 900, paperback

The power supply, like the laptop itself, is extremely miniature. It is capable of delivering 36 watts. The connection to the network is indicated by a bright blue LED.

    Keyboard and touchpad

The keyboard is exactly the same as in the ASUS Eee PC 701. It has many shortcomings, among the main ones - a non-standard layout and too small keys. In addition, in our copy, the keyboard was poorly fixed and, when typing, perceptibly walked up and down with an unpleasant rattling sound. In general, the keyboard is not a problem, for large volumes of typing it is not suitable, although you can quickly sketch a letter.

But the touchpad, unlike the keyboard, is a success. It is large, with high bumping edges and a very pleasant texture. The touchpad keys, traditionally for ASUS, are made in the form of a single rocker strip, their pressing is soft. Interestingly, the touchpad supports "multitouch" functions - for example, stroking with two fingers at the same time works like scrolling.

    Screen

The screen of the ASUS Eee PC 900 is much better than that of the Eee PC 701 - both in size (8.9 inches) and in resolution (1024x600). Such a display is already more than enough for full-fledged work on the Internet, with text, etc. We liked the quality of the matrix installed in the subnotebook. It is matte, contrasting, with deep blacks and large (by laptop standards) viewing angles. Unfortunately, the maximum brightness is not high, it is definitely not enough for working in the sun.

    Noise and heat

During operation, ASUS Eee PC 900 practically does not heat up, but it constantly turns with a fan. At the same time, the sound is unpleasant: not a quiet rustle, but an annoying buzz.

    Performance

The laptop is equipped with a low-voltage Intel Celeron M 353 processor with a clock speed of 900 MHz. Its performance is more than sufficient for most day-to-day tasks such as office work, internet, mail, watching videos and listening to music. The ASUS Eee PC 900 managed the multi-threaded wPrime 1.55 benchmark in 199 seconds, which is 39 seconds faster than the HP 2133 with the 1.2 GHz VIA C7-M processor.

Subjectively, there are no "brakes" when working in Windows XP, the laptop easily copes with all tasks (except, of course, watching HD-video).

    Battery life

ASUS Eee PC 900 is equipped with a 4400 mAh battery.

The battery life was measured according to our method:

The autonomy, like all second generation netbooks, is insufficient. Two and a half hours in the most "strangled" mode is far from a brilliant result. True, for the Eee PC, extended batteries of Chinese production with a capacity of up to 7800 mAh have been available for sale for a long time. It is worth noting a somewhat strange behavior of the battery controller and / or BIOS, which give data on the battery charge to the operating system by 10%. It looks like this: the battery charge is kept at 100% for a long time, then immediately drops to 90%, then to 80, etc.

    In the dry residue

This is how, in our opinion, the Eee PC should have looked initially. A 9-inch screen with a resolution of 1024x600, increased (albeit not much) performance, a large and convenient touchpad ... The advantages of the original Her PC - small size and weight - are also preserved. Alas, it survived and main drawback- a frankly flawed keyboard, unsuitable for any serious work with text, and the battery life was frankly let down. If the first Eee PC at one time seemed like a real revelation, then its successor looks pale against the background of competitors. It should be noted that ASUS Eee PC 900 will be officially supplied to the Ukrainian market, but the volume of deliveries will be small, since more "advanced" models should appear soon. We look forward to the appearance of the Eee PC 901 and 1000 (H).

It is already clear that the ASUS Eee PC launch initiative has been very successful. And most of all, this is not even evidenced by the success of EEE PC on the market, but by the zeal with which other manufacturers began to create similar solutions.

There has always been some demand in the sector of small home devices with a screen diagonal of 6-10 inches. The problem is that there have never been many enthusiasts willing to pay big bucks for such a device. Cheap electronic devices cannot be non-mass, and non-mass devices cannot be cheap. Accordingly, for a long time the market for such devices remained a small market for enthusiasts, and exclusively niche products came out on it.

ASUS managed to break a hole in this vicious circle with the idea of a $ 200 laptop. Even in spite of the fact that in reality the cost turned out to be at least twice as high (now the Eee PC 701 costs about $ 400 on average in the US, or about 10,000 rubles in our country, the cheapest is about $ 300 in the United States), the potential of the Eee The PC is still very large, which is proven by very good sales. Now ASUS introduces more and more new models to the market, rapidly filling this market.

This time we tested ASUS Eee PC 900. But in order not to consider one device, we paired it with the just released MSI Wind - a new creation of a Taiwanese manufacturer and, in principle, quite an interesting competitive product. Let's see how the devices relate to each other, and how convenient each is individually.

    Resources on the Internet

ASUS has launched its own website at. The site is simple, but at the same time it is user-friendly and attractive. And most importantly - it is in good harmony with the product itself. The only thing is that there is no information about the 900th model.

MSI has it on the website. The design is also simple but attractive. All essential and interesting features of the novelty are indicated on the main page. Here you can find all the information you need to know about your laptop.

We would like to point out that a lively discussion of both products with large quantity technical details, customization tips, etc. goes to our forum.

This is where a lot is collected useful information about MSI Wind.

A . The branch is huge. And this is the second series!

Finally, we had one dedicated to just comparing these two laptops. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with it, it shows a very clear comparison of cases and functionality.

    Testing

    Housing and connectors

Externally, the ASUS Eee PC 900 has almost the same body as the Eee PC 701, especially since the test again featured a pearl-white model. By the way, the Eee PC will now only be available in two versions, black and white, there will be no multi-colored cases for the 900 series.

The body of the 900th model is 2-3 millimeters wider (relatively speaking, the vertical screen size) than the 701, just to fit a larger screen, the rest of the dimensions remain almost the same. Thanks to the design of the case with beveled corners and a cylindrical insert in the middle (this is found on modern Sony laptops), subjectively the Eee PC 900 looks very small and really looks more like a toy than a full-fledged laptop. However, it is quite thick (especially in the back because of the battery). It is convenient to carry the laptop, especially on the back side - the battery protrudes from the bottom, it is convenient to grasp it with your fingers. The laptop weighs 1 kg.

The MSI Wind wore a black version during testing. On the this moment announced three colors: white (called "angelic white"), black (called "regal black." ).

Wind slightly surpasses ASUS in width, and much longer in length, looks much larger and, due to this, thinner. But objectively, they are almost the same in thickness, ASUS can be a little thicker due to the battery.

The lids of laptops open in different ways: the hinges of ASUS are made in the form of rings in a cylindrical insert, while those of MSI are L-shaped. Therefore, in ASUS, the matrix rises up on ring hinges and is located quite high relative to the case, while in MSI it leans back and falls slightly down on the L-shaped ones, the bottom edge of the screen is located a little higher or flush with the keyboard level. Because of this, open laptops are exactly the same in height. The lower height of the open matrix can be a plus, for example, on an airplane - the laptop can be more conveniently positioned on a folding table.

The lid does not open 180 degrees (sometimes, especially when reading, the laptop is not very comfortable to hold).

Both laptops, if you flip the lid to the maximum (and when you type with the laptop on your lap, you have to do this), they try to lean back - the matrix outweighs the light case, and the battery is too close to the center of gravity, plus, the lower edge of the case, on which it rests the laptop is located not where the battery and the matrix are, but slightly in front, so the matrix outweighs. By the way, this effect appears only on the knees or on soft surfaces (for example, on a blanket or on a sofa), laptops are stable on a table and other hard surfaces.

In count external connectors laptops are similar: 3 USB, card reader, RJ-45 network connector and external monitor output.

Let's take a look at the location of the connectors on both laptops.

Both the Eee PC and the Wind have no connectors on the front. From the point of view of ergonomics, this is good, because if the laptop, for example, is on your knees, using the connectors on the front is extremely inconvenient. At the same time, you can assess the position of the indicators in the case.

On the left side of the Eee PC there is a network connector, one USB slot, a ventilation grill (note, it is relatively small) and audio connectors.

For comparison, MSI on the left side has a hole for a Kensington lock, a connector for a power plug, a large ventilation grill (the case should be much better purged) and two USB ports.

On the right side there is a card reader, two USB slots, an output to an external monitor and a port for a Kensington lock. In principle, the location of the connectors is convenient for a right-handed person, the only thing is that if you connect an external monitor, the thick cord will go next to the hand with the mouse - this is not very convenient.

On the right side- one USB port, card reader, audio jacks, external monitor and network jack. Here, as you can see, there will be much more thick wires in front of the hand with the mouse.

The back of the Eee PC has only a power supply connector, which is not very convenient - you have to look for it.

At MSI, since the matrix is tilted back, rear panel empty.

It seems to us that the port layout is more convenient for the EEE PC during operation.

Separately, it is worth noting the location of the power supply plugs, since you have to deal with them most often. At MSI, the plug is made on the side and not angled, that is, the wire goes to the side of the laptop. But it is convenient to insert and pull it out.

At ASUS, the plug is inserted from the back, it is much less convenient to insert it than at MSI - as a rule, you have to grope it. At ASUS, the plug is disgustingly held in the socket; any attempt to move the laptop threatens to fall out of the groove. With us, it dropped out, even if you just move the laptop across the table.

At the bottom of the Eee PC 900 there are some ventilation grilles (and the rectangular grilles in the corners are the speakers brought out to the bottom).

MSI has a lot more ventilation grilles, which should provide better case airflow. The speakers are hidden under small circular grilles in the corners of the cabinet.

The indicators for both laptops are located in the same inconvenient place - on the right of the front edge of the keyboard panel.

The indicators are hard to see when the lid is closed (visible only if you look at the laptop from the front - if it is on the table, the status of the indicators is not visible).

MSI has twice as many indicators, but we don't think it's more convenient. For example, four indicators of the Eee PC were enough for us. At the same time, in both models, when printing, all indicators are blocked by the wrist, to look at them, you have to remove your hand.

The ASUS power button is located on a cylindrical insert. The button is flush with the level of the case, but we had no problems with switching on.

MSI has it on the panel above the keyboard. The button has an indicator of laptop operation in the form of a five-pointed snowflake.

    Configuration

The conversation about configuration turns out to be interesting.

We are against numbers in the review of such devices, since users, as a rule, are interested in the subjective impression “fast enough or not?”. However, it is worth saying at least a couple of words about the configuration and its impact on performance.

In testing, we did not have the 901st Eee PC (which should be on Intel Atom), and the 900, built, like the 701st EEE PC, on an old platform with a 900 MHz Celeron processor. And the Wind prototype was already on Intel Atom.

The problem is that Intel processor Atom was "specially optimized" for use in devices where performance is not very important, but battery life is important and, apparently, they were further optimized, since in many cases the Atom platform shows lower performance (sometimes significantly lower) than the same Celeron 900. In this regard, it seems, ASUS will continue to install Celeron in different modifications of the Eee PC. Power consumption could not be directly compared - the devices are different, and the battery capacity is also different. Comparative data is available further in the review.

A few words should be said about the information storage subsystem. In the initial concept, Linux was installed on the EEE PC, and the total disk size was a very modest 4 GB (in the most powerful model - 8 GB). But it quickly became apparent that even a device like the Eee PC would be much more popular if equipped with the Windows OS that most users are used to. And then it became obvious that 4 or 8 GB of SSD flash memory for a Windows device is very small. So latest models come with capacities of 12 and 20 GB, more capacious solutions may appear in the future. Moreover, as we understood, the flash memory is divided into two arrays, the main disk is 4 GB in size and an additional one - 8 for Windows-variants and 16 for variants with Linux. And in the future, ASUS promises to introduce devices with conventional hard disk... Moreover, the used ASUS SSD shows rather modest (relative to flash) results both in terms of speed and access time. They are at the level of ordinary hard drives or a little better.

Wind is more versatile in this regard: it installs standard hard a 2.5 "80 GB drive. And users who need a large amount of disk space can easily change it to any available on the market, at least 250 GB, getting rid of all the problems with disk space at once. and possible drops, the Eee PC 900 looks preferable.

Another important point. The Eee PC 900 lacks Bluetooth, it will only be available in the 901, while MSI does. It seems to us that in such a mobile Bluetooth device necessary as it is used to communicate with mobile devices, for example, with telephones (which can also be used as modems for accessing cellular networks via GPRS) or GPS adapters. Until ASUS acquires Bluetooth support, it will be definitely less convenient to use it in some cases.

Both computers are equipped with webcams and microphones and are suitable for telephony use.

By the way, both already have Skype installed (even the EEE PC with Linux has it), subtly hinting at the possibility of such use.

    Impressions of use

    Keyboard and touchpad

We found the keyboard more comfortable in MSI. It is also smaller than the usual one, but larger than in ASUS, you can try to type on it blindly, whereas in ASUS we didn’t work that way in principle.

The keyboards are almost identical in layout. On the left, the difference is that MSI has Fn in the corner, while ASUS has ctrl. And on the right, the main difference is that they have a differently organized cursor. In ASUS, the cursor keys are full-sized, in MSI they are compressed vertically, so it is more convenient to use the cursor on the Eee PC, but on ASUS it is inconvenient to use the right Shift. Both models have pressed keys, but since they are not very suitable for touch typing, we think we can put up with this.

The MSI's keyboard feels much better - the keys are firm, the press is firmer, and the keyboard is quiet. Everything at ASUS creaks, rattles. Plus, the keyboard itself is shaking in the case, it is unpleasant to type. Even in the photographs, you can see that some keys are crooked relative to each other. As far as we remember, there were no such claims to the 700th series. Apparently, the copy was of poor quality, or it was being dismantled.

In terms of dimensions, the touchpad of the ASUS 900 is much larger than that of the 700 series, while the MSI Wind has the same size as that of the 700 series. Nevertheless, in use with the default settings, the touchpad of ASUS is too hard - very often light hits on it are not perceived as a click, and you have to use a very hard key. The MSI touchpad, although small, is adjusted as it should. And the keys are pressed softer. According to messages from the forum, ASUS can perceive some additional gestures (for example, if you swipe with two fingers, the scrolling mode will work), but we have not tested this.

    Temperature regime

It seemed to us that MSI has a much better airflow, the fan is quiet, but it blows hard. Therefore, the Wind case is colder. ASUS is warm on the bottom, the ventilation grill is small, the fan works with a quiet hum, reminiscent of the hum of a transformer. Exhaust temperatures were 31 degrees for the Wind and 37 degrees for the Eee PC.

    Screen and sound

MSI has an inch larger screen. In this case, the resolution is the same. Therefore, all characters on the Wind screen look larger and more convenient to use. The corners are small for both screens, the colors float almost at any deviation. To see both light and dark tones, their position must be carefully adjusted.

Both laptops have LED matrix backlighting. In behavior, this is similar to the truth - the backlight can be adjusted within a very wide range. For example, if you read on an Eee PC in complete darkness, then the backlight can be set so that the screen glows very weakly and does not hurt the eyes, but the characters are well read. At maximum brightness, the screens are well lit to work in any ambient light (except in direct sunlight).

    Battery life

ASUS won in our test. The measurements were taken at maximum brightness using the usual method for Windows systems. It should only be noted that the Wind had a "half battery" with three cells in the test, which shouldn't provide very long battery life. With a high-capacity battery, this laptop will probably pull ahead (but it will weigh significantly more).

ASUS has a battery of 2h 45m when reading, and 2h 15m when watching movies, MSI - 2h 15m and 1h 47m, respectively. The difference in modes for both laptops is almost exactly half an hour.

ASUS has an unusual battery connection. The battery does not constantly inform the system, but in 10% increments (that is, the system always shows the capacity 100-90-80). Sometimes this leads to not entirely correct operation of the system, it turns off before it has time to go into sleep mode (including, according to messages from the forum).

During testing, both laptops "broke down" several times, that is, after the batteries were discharged, they did not go to sleep, but turned off. The rest of the charge was not enough to maintain the "standby mode" - this must be taken into account in order not to lose data.

Battery life is average for a gadget. Both devices can be used, for example, to check the calendar or read for half an hour, but, for example, you can “hang out” in a cafe with Wi-Fi for a maximum of one and a half hours, and then the laptop needs to be recharged somewhere. We think that autonomous time work for a full-fledged business application of such equipment should take about 5 hours.

And sitting at home is enough for such a battery capacity, especially since the power supply units for both laptops are small and light. By the way, our Eee PC had a very short power cord, while MSI has a much longer one (but in the American format, since this is a sample).

    Conclusion

The choice is difficult to make. We liked Wind better, as it has a larger screen, more comfortable keyboard, and outwardly, in our opinion, he is prettier. Besides, we like its configuration better.

However, the Eee PC has a lot of fans, plus it boasts a smaller size and weight (which is especially valuable in such a device), plus it has a little longer battery life. Plus, there will soon be new Eee PC models on the market that will be completely similar in functionality to Wind, and users will have much more choice within the Eee PC line.

Few could argue that Asus created something special when it launched the Eee PC series. But the idea of making a truly mobile and highly accessible computer has been well received by consumers. While the 2007 Eee PC 4G 701 was a success, questions remained that spoiled the overall experience. With the Eee PC 900, Asus has done its job almost perfectly.

    Model history

In the concept of a simple laptop SSDs and no moving parts are nothing new. In Series 5 Psion, the company introduced a handy device that could be used, for example, to type while sitting on a train. Then the manufacturer expanded the boundaries, presenting the world with the 7th series - a netbook.

Psion netBook managed to balance the main functionality, small size and long battery life. Over time, however, full-fledged laptops became smaller and lighter, and end users wanted feature-rich operating systems. All this led to a decrease in demand for Psion (although its EPOC OS operating system continued its life as Symbian).

For a long time, there were no devices like the 7 Series and the NetBook. Fortunately, Asus realized that there was room in the market for a simple, affordable machine that didn't need to run. latest version Windows - this is how the Eee PC netbook was born.

    Frame

Those who have not heard of Her PC should be given some explanation. This is a very small device measuring 225x165x35 mm and weighing about 1 kg. With such parameters, the model really belongs to the ultraportable sector. Designed for on-the-go use, it doesn't take up much space in your bag. The netbook comes in two colors: pearlescent white and black, just like Apple's MacBook. But this is the only similarity that binds them. The assembly of the case and hinges is of high quality, but there is no transport lock, so the device must be handled with care when transporting.

    Display

Although the chassis Asus eee The PC 900 is the same as the 701, you just need to open the lid to see the first significant difference. The screen took a huge step forward and provided the Eee PC with an even more attractive look than its predecessor. The 7-inch display of the original netbook was 800 pixels wide and forced the user to constantly scroll to the side of the vast majority of web pages.

On the enlarged 8.9 ”screen of the PC 900, this problem has been corrected by increasing the image resolution. 1024 dots wide allows you to display web pages without the need for additional manipulation. The full display resolution is 1024x600 pixels. This means it uses a wide format like most full-featured laptops on the market.

According to user reviews, the screen quality of the Asus Eee PC 900 is excellent. The display, while not as bright and bright as the Sony TZ, is evenly lit, has wide viewing angles and does not suffer from the presence of dead pixels... It fills the lid of the netbook much better than before - it looked tiny then, with speakers on the sides and surrounded by a wide black bezel. Along with the improvement in functionality, the aesthetics of the model have also increased.

    Keyboard

Given the overall size of the Eee PC, it should come as no surprise that the keyboard is quite small. Anyone who can barely handle the reduced key size of traditional ultraportable notebooks will not enjoy the Eee PC. If the fingers are thin, then there should be no problems with the input. I am surprised by the good stroke of each key and Feedback after each press, which ensures that the finger bounces back and is ready for the next press. If there is a significant drawback, it is the reduced size of the enter key. While this can take some time to get used to, users would rather have a normal sized button.

    Touchpad

Below the gap is the touchpad, which is another change from the Eee PC 701. Not only is it much wider, it also supports multi-touch. You can zoom in and out by spreading or pinching your fingers. Laptop users who are accustomed to scrolling documents using the right edge of the touchpad will probably be disappointed to learn that the Eee PC 900's touchpad does not support this feature. But one should not despair, because the manufacturer has come up with much The best way... Instead of sliding your finger along the edge of the touchpad, the Asus netbook allows you to do it anywhere - just use two fingers. Scrolling works both vertically and horizontally.

    Loudspeakers

Asus has been criticized for the huge speakers around the edges of the screen on the original model. This time around, the display bezels have narrowed significantly and the speakers have moved to the base of the netbook. The sound quality is good, if the device is put on your lap, it becomes muffled.

    Asus Eee PC 900: specifications

There are some big internal changes too, although the processor is not one of them. While many hoped that the model would receive an Intel Atom, this did not happen. The main platform has remained unchanged. Intel Celeron 900 MHz and motherboard on the 915GM chipset do not demonstrate performance miracles, but they do their job flawlessly. The RAM has undergone modernization - it doubled and reached 1 GB. The webcam has also been updated from 0.3 to 1.3 megapixels - perfect solution for those who want their friends to see them better while communicating on Skype.

Others important update became the amount of data storage. The 4GB of internal storage on the 701 is now available in 12GB and 20GB variants. There is no price difference between the two, as the 12GB version comes with Windows XP preinstalled on the Asus Eee PC 900 and the 20GB version comes with Linux. The manufacturing company used the money saved by installing the open source OS to expand the ROM space. Of course, there is an option to purchase a Linux device and then just install Windows yourself.

    Software

Users with a 20GB version of Linux are not sure if they need Windows XP. The beauty of the Asus Eee PC 900 lies in its simplicity, so there is simply no need to load a heavy OS, and most of the features it offers will be unnecessary. Except when it is necessary to run such Windows applications, how Microsoft Office, there is nothing that cannot be done with the Linux version.

The Asus Eee PC 900 takes lightning fast wherever users are operating system Microsoft accustomed to heavy CPU work. Unlike Windows, 1GB of RAM is sufficient for a well-configured Linux build, and the fast solid state drive ensures that the netbook responds instantly to all commands.

    Working with Linux

Navigating the Linux GUI is incredibly easy. The user deals with a desktop with tabs, clicking on each of them changes the icons on the desktop. The first is called "Internet" and contains icons related to access to the World Wide Web. Among them, there is also an email shortcut that opens a page with various icons. mail clients such as Gmail and Hotmail. There are pre-installed Firefox browser, Skype and Google Docs. The messenger button will launch Pidgin, which is a multi-purpose instant messaging protocol. Users especially love the fact that all conversations take place in one window with tabs for each interlocutor - this is very convenient when desktop space is worth its weight in gold.

The Work tab gives you access to OpenOffice, which allows you to edit text, spreadsheets, and presentations that can be saved in MS Office format. There are also applications for reading PDFs, writing notes and Thunderbird, which will satisfy all your needs. e-mail... The file manager is also located here, which basically corresponds to Windows Explorer and allows you to search across all folders.

The Study tab clearly targets the education sector, which is a large part of the Eee PC market. Here are the games and software that help increase vocabulary, spelling, and even math skills. There is also a basic graphical application Paint, an analogue of the program of the same name in Windows, and the "Science" shortcut will open access to the periodic table and planetarium.

The Game tab contains entertainment programs such as a media player, audio file manager, and webcam utility. There is a voice recorder and a shortcut that will open up access to several preloaded games, including the obligatory Solitaire.

The Settings tab contains all system utilities and application settings. Here you can set the touchpad parameters, change the date and time, control the use of disk space and the operation of the anti-virus system. The button for removing and adding programs is located right there and allows you not only to install or remove applications, but also to check for updates for all available programs. Finally, the Favorites tab is where all your favorite links and shortcuts are stored.

    Equipment

Asus has provided the netbook with a small neoprene sleeve that will keep the device's glossy finish during portability. There is also a network adapter, a user manual, entire sections of which are devoted to working with Windows, a system recovery DVD with drivers for XP and the Linux installer.

    Connectivity

Despite the very small case, the manufacturer managed to accommodate a surprisingly many ports in it. On the right is the D-Sub interface for connecting an external monitor. Next to it are 2 USB 2.0 ports and an SD card slot. Considering the cheapness of flash memory, it should be noted that the presence of such a slot means that even if the Asus Eee PC 900 runs out of memory, it will not be expensive to increase it. On the left is the third USB 2.0 port. That's more than most full-featured ultraportable laptops.

Headphone and microphone jacks are also located here. You can choose which headset to use: traditional or USB when working with a webcam in the pre-installed Skype app... Of course there is a microphone built into the lid, but the headset will always be the best choice... The last port on the left is the Ethernet connector for network adapter 10/100. It should be noted that MacBook Air it does not have it, despite its much larger size. Of course supports and wireless connection Asus Eee PC 900. WiFi is implemented according to the 802.11 b / g standard.

    Battery life

One area where the Eee PC 900 really does not outperform its predecessor is battery life. With the improvements that the manufacturer has made, battery life remains the only gap in great design, but it is still significant. According to the manufacturer, the battery of the Asus Eee PC 900 allows the netbook to work for 2.5 hours. According to users, the charge is barely enough for 2 hours. However, at full screen brightness and with the wireless... Perhaps the optimization of energy consumption could extend the operating life to the time declared by the manufacturer, but even 2.5 hours is very little by today's standards.

Ideally, users would like to see at least 4 hours of battery life, especially considering that the Sony TZ Ultrabook can last for more than 6 hours. yourself. But this will not help much if you want to work in the garden or in a park where there is no outlet. Of course, you can purchase more powerful battery but this will add to the cost and weight of the netbook. The Asus Eee PC 900 has a universal charger designed for 120 or 230 V and 50 or 60 Hz.

    Conclusion

The manufacturer has made enough changes to make the netbook quite appealing to those considering buying a small, thin and light laptop. Of course, these improvements have increased the cost of the Asus Eee PC 900 - the price of the device has risen to 23 thousand rubles from 15,000.

The manufacturing company has done a brilliant job of updating an already excellent netbook. The engineers heeded all the comments regarding the original Her PC and tried to satisfy them. A 1024-pixel wide screen provides usability, especially if you spend a lot of time working with the browser. Additional operational and inner memory were a welcome change and allowed the Eee PC to provide a viable alternative to full-fledged laptops.

Despite the significant price hike, the small, lightweight and affordable Asus netbook is still a great buy.
