Olympic symbols have not spared the Acer Iconia Tab 510 box and even the tablet case. The manufacturer diligently emphasizes its involvement in the Games. What does the tablet have to do with the Olympics and whether the symbols of the Games will help increase sales of devices in the Iconia Tab line, let's try to figure it out in this review.
Outwardly, the Iconia Tab 510 does not represent anything remarkable: the usual rectangle with smooth lines, rather thin (less than 11 mm), moderately strict, there are not even silver inserts, like last year's Iconia Tab 500. And although there is nothing to catch your eye, the materials of manufacture devices pleased. Thanks to the rubberized textured plastic of the case, the tablet is very pleasant to the touch. The material is elastic, even a little soft, there are no scratches on it, like fingerprints. Perhaps this is one of the most practical body designs among all tablets.
The controls are traditional for Android tablets. On the top there is a double volume control button and a lock lever, on the left there is a power key and a 3.5 mm audio jack, on the right side there is a microHDMI port and a slot for microSD memory cards hidden behind a cover. Below is a pair of speakers, a microUSB port and a reset button. An adapter for a standard USB connector is supplied with the tablet, so you can connect a regular USB flash drive if you wish.
On the back panel we find the peephole of a 5-megapixel camera, but it is not it that attracts attention, but the manufacturer's logo and the Olympic rings. Below is an indication of Dolby Digital Plus technology. Not to say that the sound quality in the tablet is especially high. It is really not bad at the level of competitors, but nothing more.
There is nothing remarkable on the front panel. In addition to the display, there is a front camera and a couple of logos - Acer and Iconia Tab.
The device weighs about 700 g. This is not critical for a model with a 10-inch display, but there are still lighter tablets. The same, for example, is lighter by almost 120 g. It seems that the difference is not significant, but it will make itself felt after 10 minutes of working with the Iconia Tab 510.
The assembly of the Taiwanese tablet is excellent: nothing creaks or staggers anywhere, all the parts fit perfectly to each other, the only plug sits tightly, the buttons are securely located in the recesses and are pressed tightly, but without causing discomfort. It is noticeable that Acer paid a lot of attention to such trifles. Without exaggeration, the assembly of the model is at the level of top-end products of more eminent manufacturers of Android tablets, or even better.
Display and camera
The Iconia Tab 510 has a standard 10.1 ″ LCD with a resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels. The display cannot be called outstanding. However, this is not a cheap Chinese screen either. Such panels are found in most mid-range tablets, while they are inferior to IPS-displays with wider viewing angles and high contrast.
If you do not compare the screen with more expensive models, there are no special complaints about it. Colors fade slightly only at a very large slope, in general, brightness and contrast are enough for all everyday tasks, the color rendition is close to natural, pixelation at this resolution is noticeable only when very close to the eyes - no one will look at the tablet display like that.
The model is equipped with a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, but no flash. Taking pictures with a tablet is another thing. Apparently, therefore, manufacturers are in no hurry to install high-quality photo modules in such devices. Iconia Tablet The Tab 510 is no exception in this regard. In most cases, images are noisy and blurry. A more or less normal photo can be taken outdoors with good ambient light, but even in this case, you should not expect any special miracles.
Interface, functionality
The device works under Android 4.0.3 with proprietary radial Touch Ring interface. The developers used the ring as a control element already on the lock screen: by touching the circle, you can unlock the tablet by sliding your finger to the right, or immediately launch one of four applications (which programs these will be, you can define yourself in the settings menu).
In addition to the standard Ice Cream Sandwich virtual buttons, there is a green dot in the center of the system panel. Clicking on it brings up a circle with four shortcuts for the most popular applications, a search button in the center and a volume slider. The necessary programs for quick access, again, can be determined by yourself. The browser looks most impressive in such a radial menu, or rather, its bookmarks, which can be scrolled around in a circle.
The rest of the interface is not much different from "Naked" Android 4.0: control buttons "Back home" and "Multitasking" in the lower left corner, system information with a notification panel - in the lower right, search buttons and access to the main menu - at the top.
To install branded and third party applications Acer was stingy and did the right thing. All the same, users rarely like the choice of the manufacturer, because you can create the list yourself required programs from Google Play.
Acer felt that buyers of the Iconia Tab 510 could not do without file manager Astro, Aupeo online radio service, Polaris Office suite, annoying McAfee antivirus and a music track recognition service. We have already seen several times on the examples of tablets and smartphones that the Nvidia Tegra 3 perfectly copes with the appetites of both the Android OS itself and the most demanding applications. Most Iconia tests The Tab 510 showed results that are identical or very close to those of the Asus model Eee Pad Transformer Prime based on the same platform. For some reason, only in the Quadrant benchmark, the novelty seriously lagged behind its competitor. However, there is no need to complain about the tablet's performance in real conditions: even the most "Heavy" games from the Tegra Zone section run without problems.
The Iconia Tab 510 is equipped with a 9800 mAh battery, one charge of which lasts for 8 and a half hours of Full HD video playback with disabled wireless modules and maximum screen backlight level. The result is about the same as the Transformer Prime without a docking station.
It is worth clarifying that we tested a tablet model with Bluetooth 2.1 and Wi-Fi modules, but a modification with a 3G modem - Iconia Tab 511 - should also appear on sale.

Note that during Acer review Iconia Tab 510 had to remember about the Olympic symbols only once - in the section devoted to the appearance. All that the device has in common with the Summer Games is the catchy logos on the box and the case of the tablet. There are no additional accessories or even a single thematic application in the Iconia Tab 510. Appearance, materials, controls, assembly
For this tablet, Acer decided to use a win-win combination of black and gold colors, usually used in premium versions of devices (for example, with a large amount of memory). At first glance, the tablet looks great, but when you take the model in hand, all the feeling of premium quality disappears. Plastic used on back cover, tactilely very similar to cheap budget solutions. It may be practical, but it does not help the perception much.
The company has been experimenting with materials for a long time (I like their fabric-styled plastic the most), but I didn't like the plastic in the Tab 10 specifically. However, I will immediately note that this is a matter of taste, because, again, from the point of view of practicality, this is a good choice.
This model has an interesting arrangement of controls. For example, the volume rocker was placed on the left side of the display frame, and a button was installed on the right to switch sound modes. By the way, the device has four loudspeakers, so I'll tell you about the sound in a separate section.
The slot for a memory card and a microHDMI port are hidden under a gold flap. By the way, at first I thought that this gilded plate could not be removed in any way, and looked at this groove with suspicion. Fortunately, in the instructions this moment was described unambiguously. Potential buyers, please note that the microSD slot is hidden very cleverly, you can't see it straight away.
On the left there is a minijack and a microUSB port, and on top there is a power button and a microphone hole.
Interestingly, despite the feeling of cheap plastic, I did not notice any crunch in the case, the tablet is perfectly assembled.

I've been repeating for years now that Acer's tablets are usually a little thicker and heavier than other manufacturers, but every year this difference is getting smaller. This year, for example, when compared with a direct competitor, the difference is minimal.
As for the dimensions, I will say this: they are standard for a ten-inch tablet. It is moderately thin and relatively lightweight.
Screen
We are rarely pleased with the FHD-resolution in the segment up to 15 thousand rubles, so we will immediately add it to the advantages of the screen. The second advantage is the oleophobic coating, which Acer used to skimp on in the budget segment. But the anti-reflective coating is either absent or very poor. You can see your reflection in indoor lighting even when you turn on maximum brightness, and outside the display is almost completely faded.
Operating system
The tablet runs Android 6.0 with minimal additions from Acer. We already wrote about 6.0 itself, and I'll tell you about the additions below.
With the EZ WakeUp app, you can set the display to turn on with a gesture of five fingers or tapping with two thumbs (the second option is only available for portrait orientation).
EZ Utilities allows you to change the font size and interface on your system.

Performance

A funny situation comes out with the camera, the manufacturer directly highlighted it in gold, as if implying some kind of super-capabilities of the module, but in fact we have a regular tablet camera with autofocus, it is only suitable for capturing text, but you shouldn't count on more, so I won't even give examples of frames. But the front camera is perfect for video calls.
Wireless interfaces
An interesting situation, there is no mobile Internet in the tablet, but the GPS-module was added, it works well, I have no complaints about it. Another pleasant thing is the presence of dual-band Wi-Fi.
Stereo speakers
The tablet has four speakers located on the front side. I really liked the sound quality and the maximum volume level. When DTS-HD technology is turned on, the sound becomes more voluminous and rich, the emphasis, of course, goes to low frequencies... But the tablet also performed well with classical piano compositions. Another advantage is the absence of wheezing at maximum volume. In general, in terms of sound, Acer did their best.
Conclusion
In retail, they ask for 15,000 rubles for this model. For this money, you get a tablet with high resolution display, a mediocre IPS-matrix, oleophobic coating, good battery life and cool stereo speakers. Of the significant claims, I will single out only the poor antiglare coating and "cheap" (subjectively) plastic. For some, these shortcomings will be significant, but let's not forget that there are practically no competitors at this price, or rather, it is the only one.
This is, of course, about Lenovo Tab 2 A10 70L. This tablet is slightly thinner, lighter, has slightly better display but significantly worst speakers and it also has LTE support. You will have to overpay 2,000-3,000 rubles for this. On the one hand, the overpayment is insignificant, but on the other, it is 15-18%, and Mobile Internet not everyone needs it.
In any case, if you choose between ten-inch tablets in the 15-18 thousand segment, then, apart from these two, there is nothing particularly interesting with FHD-resolution.
The 10.1-inch TFT-display of the tablet has a resolution of 1280x800 pixels (the same as in the Acer Iconia Tab A500 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets), and the grain of the picture is completely invisible. Viewing angles allow you to watch movies from your tablet in a small company. Worse case with resistance to ambient light. In addition to the fact that the picture itself fades a lot, the plastic glossy protective shield and strives to cast the sun glare directly into the eyes.
Automatic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight should have struggled with this, but in the Iconia Tab W500 it works completely ineffectively. The system, it seems, divides the data received from the light sensor into two categories: "it is light now" and "dark". In the first case, the display backlight shines brightly, in the second it is almost turned off. And the reaction time to changes in ambient light also leaves much to be desired. In a word, it is better to independently choose the optimal backlight mode.
In work
The tablet uses a dual-core AMD C-50 chip with a frequency of 1 GHz (we have already tested this platform on the example of the Acer Aspire One 522 netbook). It is x86 compatible, and therefore allows you to work with desktop software. Its direct and only serious competitor is Intel Atom, all tablet-like products on which differed in short operating time, large weight and dimensions, and in general were overly Chinese. So I took Iconia Tab W500 for the test with great distrust and guided, rather, by the need to give the reader information about a product that will be loudly advertised.
I cannot say that I was delighted, but Iconia Tab W500 exceeded my expectations. It turned out to be much closer to tablets in the modern sense than the Atom zoo that we had to deal with in recent years. The W500 is not very heavy (just over 900 grams) and quite thin (16 mm), and besides, it has a good bright display with a capacitive sensor. Such detail as active cooling greatly spoils the impression. It does not make sounds (at least, it did not have time to start emitting during testing), but sometimes the hand heats up noticeably. And besides, the realization does not go out of my head that with each calorie of heat, the energy stored in the battery flies out. And there should be no moving parts in modern tablets.
Fortunately, this is the only moveable component in the device. There is no Winchester in the W500, because it is half a tablet, and they are not treated very carefully. Instead of a disk drive, it uses an SSD. Small - 32 GB - but fast and absolutely indifferent to any shakes.
But no matter how hard the dual-core processor and solid state drive, they can't make the Iconia Tab W500 as responsive as even inexpensive Android tablets. The system often "thinks", freezes, and just slowly switches between tasks. For a computer, and even more so for a netbook, this behavior is familiar. Tablets, on the other hand, tend to react much faster to user input.
There is a tablet computer in almost every home, as once in every home you could find system unit with a monitor. Tablet PCs managed to take over most of the market, as no one wants big and noisy machines when much more compact devices cover the bulk of their needs.
At the same time, like computers, tablets quickly lost popularity, they no longer inspire delight and are bought as bedside gadgets (watch a movie in the evening or let a child play). The touchscreen 811 cannot be called “wooden”, but at the same time it often confuses positioning, reacts with a delay or does not react at all, which is especially noticeable when typing and playing games. The heart of the device is the famous Chinese chip from MediaTek - MT8389. The processor works with four cores, two of which are efficient, used in games and complex programs, and the other two are energy efficient, used in light applications and in standby mode. Also, under the cover of the gadget, 1 gigabyte was crept in. random access memory and 8 gigabytes of main memory (in the Acer Iconia Tab A1 811 8gb version). The operating time depends entirely on how the gadget is used, on the network coverage (if a cellular module is used), on running applications using geolocation services (GPS).

The camera is far from the most important aspect in a tablet computer, and it makes no sense to hope for gorgeous photos in it. The Acer Iconia Tab A1 811 has two cameras. Main (rear) with a resolution of 5 megapixels and secondary (front) with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels. Both cameras perform, rather, a utilitarian function.
Using the main camera, you can take a photo for notebook or scanned document. The front camera is suitable for video calls (there is nothing to do with it for selfie fans). There is no autofocus. The entire line, including the Acer Iconia Tab 811 and others, is powered by the 4th generation Android, named after the KitKat chocolate bars. Today the platform is outdated and significantly inferior to more modern versions... Some applications are not supported (both standard and sold in the Play Store), but the supported versions can be downloaded on the Internet and from other repositories.
This version of the software has made a significant leap in terms of performance, which allows the tablet to run smoothly and quickly, despite not having the most powerful hardware under the hood. Another important point is the adaptation of the interface for large displays. Also, in this version, power consumption is significantly reduced, which has a positive effect on the operating time of the device.
The system has a set of pre-installed "software" from Google, as well as from partners. The first is good news, since Google's software is different. good quality and pleases with its functionality. The second is very upsetting, since third-party, preinstalled "software" only takes up space and is rarely useful (considering that most of it is demo versions of low-grade games).
