First, you need to install or update the driver from the laptop manufacturer's website, as well as install special software to configure the touchpad.

The touchpad does not work at all

What to do if the touchpad does not work on ASUS laptops or if you cannot disable it via FN.

There are many reasons why the touchpad does not work on a laptop. Most of the time, though, it's just turned off. Try a keyboard shortcut Fn + F5-12... Different laptops have their own combination, look at the F keys with numbers, one of them should have a touchpad drawn. In our case, the combination is Fn + F7, and the icon is in the form of a panel on which you move your finger.

The second option, the touchpad is disabled by software. Look at the status of the system utilities responsible for the operation of the equipment: usually in the tray (lower right corner on the taskbar) there is a program icon that allows you to quickly turn off wifi, Bluetooth or the touchpad. You can also visit the Device Manager.

If the programs work, but the touchpad does not work, you have to dig deeper. The touchpad contacts motherboard through a train, which is fixed in a special fastener. A laptop is for that and a mobile one, in order to transport it. During transportation, it is exposed to shocks, vibrations, shaking, etc., as a result, the latch of the touchpad cable may open or break off. You can disassemble and check the contacts yourself, or it is better to contact laptop repair.

Hardware and mechanical damage

If the touchpad on a laptop does not work, and in addition to it, the keyboard or USB ports are moping, then the point is in the motherboard. It is necessary to diagnose a laptop in a service center, it is necessary to check the operability of the south bridge and controllers. There is only one way out - a direct road to laptop repair.

Mechanical damage to the touch panel is not cured. They hit in the heat with a fist, and after that the touchpad does not work, you will have to change the panel. Anyway, blows to the laptop usually hit the wallet as well. If only the buttons are pressed, then not all is lost. Minor repairs are usually a way out - to disassemble the touchpad, return the keys to their original position, where to glue the fasteners, where to put an elastic band, and everything will be fine.



A special panel on the laptop case next to the keyboard, which is a compact analogue of a mouse. It reacts to the movement of a finger along it, as a rule, there are two buttons in the same place (as in a mouse), and a scroll bar on the right. Since the laptop is conceived as a portable compact computer, the developers decided to save it from excess weight and wires by coming up with this.

The problem is that the developers of operating systems, especially Windows, are not inclined to think through the details and differences in hardware from different manufacturers. Plus, in our country, it is popular to use unlicensed copies, all kinds of repacks, cracks, modified releases. All this and many other factors lead to the fact that laptop hardware starts to work incorrectly or simply stops doing it.

The most common problem occurs with touchpads, since this specific device is specific to laptops. In case of any problems, we first turn to the Control Panel, where we often find that the touchpad is not displayed in the device manager.

Device Manager

Device Manager is a section of the control panel that displays all connected equipment and offers options for configuring it. In the section, you can do the following:

• view the properties of the equipment and diagnose it;
• update, roll back or remove drivers;
• enable and disable equipment;
• view technical specifications.

Accessing Device Manager is the first step when a device fails, and the touchpad is no exception:

1. If you find hardware with an exclamation mark, then there is a problem with the driver.
2. If it's not there at all, then the touchpad is probably just disabled.

Such problems usually occur when installing a new OS on a laptop or after updating to the latest versions. It so happens that laptop manufacturers have not yet managed to create a driver for a new version of the OS, and standard Windows does not work correctly. In this case, you always have the option to roll back the system. But remember that not only updates delivered to the laptop will be removed, but also all changes that have occurred since the restore point.

Enabling the touchpad

If the Manager does not have a touch panel, then, perhaps, when installing the software, the system simply turned it off for some reason. There are several options for simply enabling it:

If all of the above did not help, you can try to enable the touchpad via BIOS:

1. Reboot the laptop and enter the BIOS before starting the OS. There may be a hint on the screen on how to do this. If not, determine this either from the manual for your laptop or experimentally. This is most often the F2 or F1 key, but it can also be Del, Esc, F10, or some combination.
2. When Bios starts, go to the right to the "Advanced" tab, then down to the item "Internal Pointing Device".
3. Press Enter and select the "Enabled" value.
4. Go to the “Save & Exit” tab and exit BIOS with saving changes.

After that, Windows will boot and the laptop should see the touchpad. If it is still not there, then there is a problem with the driver.

Driver update

If after turning on the touchpad appears in Device Manager, but with an exclamation mark and still does not work, you need to reinstall the driver. First, try using the ones that are already in the system:

Check if the touchpad is displayed correctly in the Manager. If not, then you need to download the driver yourself from the manufacturer's website. As a rule, on such sites, your version of Windows is automatically detected, and the required driver will be offered. Otherwise, find the driver for the laptop of your model and the required OS version yourself. It is better to go to the website of the laptop manufacturer, and not the touchpad itself, it will be easier to find there.

Download the installation package to your laptop, run it and follow the installation instructions of the program. If you downloaded not the installer, but only an archive with different driver files, then follow the steps described above to update the driver, specifying the downloaded folder as the search location on your computer.

If the Manager again gives you a message that the drivers do not need to be updated, click in the "Remove" window, and then "Install".

After completing all the actions, do not forget to click "Update hardware configuration" if the Device Manager window was open all this time. Thus, the problems of the touchpad are usually associated either with the failure of the drivers, or simply with its shutdown by the system. However, if all the methods did not help, and the laptop still does not see the device, then the reason may be a malfunction in the laptop's equipment itself and it is better to contact the service center.
