    Introduction

Sales of the LG Optimus G device began not in Russia quite a long time ago (in November in the USA and Canada), and given its technical characteristics at that time, the G could be considered the fastest Android smartphone. Interestingly, the South Korean company (LG Electronics), together with the American Google, also began selling a Google phone called the Nexus 4, which, in turn, almost completely copied the parameters of the Optimus G, and also had latest version Android 4.2 and cheaper! However, the demand for the brainchild of LG and Google was so great that the production capacity of the Koreans simply could not cope and the phone was in short supply.

In Russia Nexus 4 began to be sold since January of this year, and Optimus G appeared in February. The first gadget went on sale at a price of 20,000 rubles, and the second - 25,000 rubles. Naturally, such a pricing policy caused bewilderment, because LG's direct competitor, Samsung, offered the Galaxy S III (certified) for 20,000 - 21,000 rubles. While people were deciding what to buy and how much, LG released an even more sophisticated smartphone in its home market - Optimus G Pro: 5-inch screen, FullHD resolution and so on. And the Optimus G model somehow smoothly turned from a flagship device into (if I may say so) a semi-flagship one. However, until the “proshka” appeared with us, it makes sense to consider in detail the “Gee”, especially since the price for it slowly began to decline and this moment stopped at around 20,000 rubles (PCT).

    Design, dimensions, controls

It would be strange if LG did not try to use the design concept in its new device Google Nexus 4. I think few people will argue that for a long time it was the appearance of the “nexus” that caused so many emotions!

The body shape of the Optimus G, unlike the Nexus 4, is rectangular with slightly bevelled corners. Personally, I like devices of this form: visually, the device acquires a slightly more strict appearance. However, the Nexus is more comfortable in the hand due to the rounded edges. In addition, the edging of the “Googlephone” has a “soft-touch” coating, so the smartphone practically does not slip in your hand. The Optimus G has a glossy sidewall. But first things first.

Dimensions "Optimus" - 131.9x68.9x8.5 mm, i.e. quite compact and relatively thin, since the Nexus has the following dimensions - 133.9x68.7x9.1 mm. Their weight differs minimally: 145 grams for G and 139 grams for the “four”. Smartphone samsung galaxy The S III is lighter (133 grams, which is no wonder - solid plastic), but 5 millimeters higher, a couple of millimeters wider and slightly thicker (0.1 mm).

A thin chrome strip runs along the LG edge. Painted, frankly, not very high quality: over time, the paint will peel off and expose the dark-colored plastic. On the other hand, it looks cool, reminiscent of metal.

Between the back cover and the piping are two more plastic strips in black and light gray (slightly thicker than the first). The side faces smoothly pass to the back side. Thus, the edges protrude slightly above the surface and protect back cover from damage. Plastic glossy, black, quite high quality in appearance. Per month active use It didn't have any scratches or blemishes on it.

Like the Nexus 4, the Optimus G boasts an original back design. The first thing worth noting is the coating of the back of the case: the second-generation Gorilla Glass glass is practically not scratched, but like any glass, it is very fragile, so it can be broken if handled carelessly. The same story was with the iPhone 4/4S. Under the glass is a glossy panel with small squares. And if you look closely, you will notice that they consist of microscopic notches applied at different angles. However, the pattern on the G is different from the pattern on the Nexus. On the first one, it is made evenly, and on the second one, according to a certain scheme, so that under various tilts of the phone in the light you observe the “matrix” effect. It's sad that LG decided not to use a similar effect. Interestingly, Samsung in its flagship Galaxy S IV designed the back cover in much the same way. True, SGS IV is not glass, but plastic.

Fingerprints remain both on the front panel and on the back of the case. However, they are practically invisible and are easily erased.

The assembly of the Optimus G is of high quality, there is nothing to complain about. Separately, it should be said that the case is monolithic, there are no collapsible parts in it (unless you specifically unscrew the cross-shaped fixing screws). Accordingly, the battery is built-in. This will upset someone, and someone will give up. Personally, I don’t care at all: if a problem arises, I’ll contact service center. Another reason, alas, to overpay ("gray" is cheaper, although slightly), but to protect yourself from the difficulties associated with the SC.

Front camera, light and proximity sensors, speaker, as well as the "event indicator" are located on the top of the front panel. The light sensor smoothly adjusts the backlight level of the matrix, correctly adjusting the brightness. The proximity sensor did not fail during testing, blocking the screen from accidental touches in time. At the top in the center is a speaker, covered with a thin black metal mesh. Its volume is very high, often had to be made quieter. Mainly listened to medium and high frequencies. The tone is pleasant extraneous noise missing, no echo. The only thing I didn't really like was the location of the speaker - a little high, almost on the verge: every time I had to choose the angle of the phone so that the sound evenly hit the ear.

Under the screen are three touch buttons "Back", "Menu" and "Home". Without illumination, they are practically invisible, they are applied with a dark gray translucent paint, thin. The brightness is low.

At the bottom there is a microUSB without a plug and a hole where the main microphone is hidden. On the top there is an additional microphone for noise reduction (when recording video, the sound is mono) and a standard 3.5 mm audio output for headphones.

The slot for installing a microSIM card is located on the left side: we put a paper clip into a small hole, remove the compartment, insert the SIM card and install the holder back. A little higher is the volume rocker. It is made in the style of the case design: thin, one part is chrome-plated, the other is lacquered in black. On the right side - the same type of on / off button, it also acts as a lock and activate the screen backlight. It is slightly convex, the pressure is soft, in general, comfortable - it fits exactly under the thumb of the right hand.

The camera module is located on the back side. The shape of the frame is square: the lower border is chrome-plated, a little higher - glossy black plastic and protective glass lens. The module rises by about 1.5 mm. Below it is a flash. The speaker is on the bottom right.

In general, I really liked the design, everything is good with ergonomics, the assembly is excellent. From point of view appearance and the workmanship of the case LG Optimus G 100% looks like a flagship - premium and expensive.

    Display

By the standards of modern technology, the diagonal of the LG G smartphone is ordinary, I would say standard - 4.7 inches. But the resolution at the moment is not the highest - 768x1280 (WXGA) pixels. But, again, we must take into account that the device began to be sold in November last year, and soon we will probably have a G Pro with an increased diagonal and resolution.

The pixel density of the Optimus screen is 312 ppi. Used here IPS matrix, but LG decided to show off, so they used the True HD marketing prefix. If you think that the Optimus G matrix is the same as on the Nexus 4, then you are wrong. The developers squeezed the maximum out of this technology and, plus everything, applied, I believe, their own “software” image enhancement, much like Sony did in TVs and smartphones (Bravia Engine). "Eldzhishniki" not only fine-tuned the color gamut of the display, but also added contrast and sharpness. It is sharpness, not clarity, since the latter can only be done by increasing the resolution. Therefore, the picture on the LG Optimus G screen looks as sharp and contrast as possible, in some cases the second parameter is redundant, i.e. small details are lost, for example, when viewing photos. Otherwise, the Optimus G display behaves as standard: at angles, the brightness slightly decreases, if tilted to the left, the image gets a purple tint, and to the right - yellow.

Comparison HTC screens Butterfly (left), Explay HD, Highscreen Explosion, LG Optimus G and ZTE Grand Era (right):

Viewing angles of the LG Optimus G screen

    Screen Matrix LG Optimus G

The white color is very pleasant, although a slight shade of blue is noticeable. The brightness of the matrix backlight is high, but in the bright sun the picture fades, but remains readable.

The touch layer is capacitive, supports up to 10 simultaneous touches. Sensitive excellent.

    In display settings:

    • Brightness (Auto or Manual)
    • Screen timeout (15 seconds to 10 minutes)
    • Smart screen. The essence of the technology lies in the fact that the backlight is on while you are looking at the screen, i.e. the smartphone will recognize the face. Unfortunately, I did not understand how it works, because in my case the backlight was always on
    • Auto rotate
    • Font type. You can choose from 8 types of fonts
    • Font size. Choose from small, regular, large or extra large
    • Illuminated front keys. AT this section the backlight of the buttons under the screen is activated or deactivated, and the glow time is also set
    • Flash alert. This option allows you to flash the built-in LED flash when you miss an SMS, call, mail, when an alarm goes off, a reminder, and so on.
    • Image aspect ratio adjustment. Changes the aspect ratio of the downloaded application to remove screen distortion
    • Motion Sensor Calibration

    Battery

The device uses a non-removable lithium-polymer (Li-Pol) battery with a capacity of 2100 mAh, 8 Wh. Such a battery is in the Nexus 4. However, the operating time of the devices is not at all the same. For example, in the talk mode, Optimus G operates for 15 hours, and Google Phone is a little less; in standby mode LG - 450 hours, "four" - about 400 hours.

During the test, I got the following indicators:

    • HD video playback (720p, H.264) at maximum brightness and volume with sound output to headphones: just over 4 hours
    • Music playback in headphones at maximum volume: just over 35 hours
    • Only games ( high brightness and volume): up to 3 hours
    • Wi-Fi surfing only (high brightness backlight): about 10 hours

On average, the device worked for about 15 hours (brightness - "automatic"): 15-20 minutes of calls per day, sending 20 text messages, 5-7 hours of internet surfing (3G connection).

    Communication options

The phone works in cellular networks 2G (850/900/1800/1900), 3G (850/900/1700/1900/2100) and LTE (800/900/1800/2100/2600). Speed DC-HSDPA, 42 Mbps, HSDPA - up to 21 Mbps, HSUPA - up to 5.76 Mbps.

Available Bluetooth version 4.0 (with A2DP, EDR stereo profile) for file and voice transfer. There were no problems with connecting headsets: it connects quickly, speech is transmitted clearly.

I did not observe involuntary loss of the network, the sensitivity is very high.

Present wireless connection Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (2.4/5 GHz, DLNA, model Murata SS2908001). The device can be used as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot). In the "Settings" there is a special item "Modem Mode".

The sensitivity of the Wi-Fi receiver is on par with the receivers of the iPhone 4S, LG Optimus 4X, Galaxy Nexus and even outperforms the Galaxy S III / Note II a little.

USB 2.0 is used for file transfer and data synchronization. When LG is connected to a PC, it is identified as a USB flash device or USB modem.

Also, the device is equipped with NFC - this is a short-range wireless high-frequency communication technology that allows the exchange of data between devices located at a distance of about 10 centimeters. Present android function Beam, which allows you to exchange data between mobile devices in one touch.

    Memory and memory card

Random access memory should be enough for all the needs of the user, since it is 2 GB here. On average, about 1.2 GB is available. This year, all top devices will be equipped with this amount of RAM.

Since the LG Optimus G does not have a slot for a memory card, you will have to be content with the built-in 32 GB, of which 25 GB is available to the user. Not much, but more than, for example, HTC Butterfly or Nexus 4 - 16 GB.

    Camera

The Optimus G has two camera modules: 13-megapixel (with autofocus) BSI and 1.3-megapixel (front, no autofocus, for video calls). There is a single-section LED flash - the maximum glow distance is 1.5 - 1.7 meters.

The minimum ISO value is 100, the maximum (automatic) is 1600. The minimum shutter speed is 1/1500 sec., The maximum is 1/14 sec. Aperture - F / 2.4, focal length - 30 mm, i.e. Optics are not the fastest and not the widest.

I really liked the picture quality: excellent work of auto-selection of white balance and exposure, good sharpness, comparable to HTC camera Butteffly. In low light conditions, there is practically no digital noise. The camera starts up quickly, the focus is smart.

Video camera records in FullHD resolution at 30 frames per second, regardless of lighting conditions. Autofocus is active during shooting. Works correctly enough, ie. if it cannot determine the focus, it sets it to infinity, rather than "floats". The sound is clear, the volume is high. Despite the presence of a second microphone, the sound is mono for some reason.

Interface. On the right is the entrance to the gallery, activating the camera and switching between photo and video. Information about the frame or video file is displayed at the top right. On the left - switching between the main and front cameras, activation of the “Cheese shutter” mode (we say “cheese”, and the shutter is released), the time of the picture (captures the missing moment before pressing the “shutter”), modes (normal, HDR, panorama, burst shooting) .

    Camera settings:

    • Timer
    • Geotagging
    • shutter sound
    • Autoview
    • Reset
    • Camera guide

For front camera available: "Cheese shutter", "beautiful face" (brightness increases slightly and the face is slightly blurred), contrast, size (1280x960, 1280x768, 640x480), scene program (normal or night), inverted image.

    Camcorder settings:

    • Resolution (FullHD, HD, TV, VGA, MMS)
    • "Live effect". Visual effects when entering the frame of a face or special effects as a background
    • Scale
    • Brightness
    • color effects
    • Geotagging
    • shutter sound
    • Autoview
    • Reset
    • Camera guide

Characteristics of the video file (in brackets - Nexus 4):

    • File Format: MP4
    • Video codec: AVC, 17 Mbps (12 Mbps)
    • Resolution: 1920x1080, 30 fps
    • Audio codec: AAC, 156 Kbps (96 Kbps)
    • Channels: 1 channel, 48 kHz

    Photo examples:

    Performance

The LG Optimus G smartphone (just like the Nexus 4) was equipped with one of the most productive Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon chipsets. The quad-core Krait processor (clock frequency of each core is 1.5 GHz), made according to the 28 nm process technology, ARMv7, “works” here. The powerful Adreno 320 GPU accelerator acts as a graphics accelerator.

Each core, when necessary, works asynchronously, i.e. with its clock frequency. This saves battery power, and the energy (in theory) is not converted into heat. In practice, the Optimus G heats up during maximum processor load, but not as much as the Nexus 4.

There is no need to talk about brakes or glitches - we have a very fast smartphone, which copes with any task, whether it's running heavy applications or powerful games like NOVA3, GTA Vice City, Asphalt 7, Modern Combat 4 and so on. Smoothness is also on top, it's a pleasure to use a smartphone.

In general, the device is so fast that it is noticeable even after use. Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S III, HTC One X and others.

    Brief technical specifications :

    Performance Tests:

    Antutu Benchmark

    Quadrant Standart

    Antutu stability test

    CPU Prime Benchmark

    Navigation

The device has GPS gpsOneGen 8A with Glonass. For navigation, "Maps" (Google Maps), "Locator" and "Navigator" are used. The search for satellites is carried out in a "cold" start in 30-40 seconds, in a "hot" - less than five seconds. Sensitivity seemed low to me.

    Software platform

The device works on operating system Google android version 4.1.2. I am sure that 4.2 will be released soon, and in the future Optimus G will receive the fifth version of the OS.

    Shell and menu

Lock screen. The new software brings in a lot of small but very cool features.

For example, you can assign several effects to the lock screen: basic, ripples with leaves, ink flow, dewdrop. They look very nice, besides they are accompanied sound effects!

Any four shortcuts can be assigned to the lock screen, and a digital clock (large or small), analog and two types of calendar can be displayed on top.

Naturally, other ways to lock the screen have not gone away: face control, pattern, PIN or password.

Main screen . Its settings are called up by clicking the "Menu" button. There are four themes available, animation (breeze, accordion, panorama, carousel, layer and domino), circular screen scrolling, wallpaper assignment and wallpaper scrolling.

The notification bar is pulled out from the top. At the very top - labels quick activation one or another function, just below - special applications, which, when launched, pop-up menus appear: for example, a calculator hanging on the desktop. It can be moved and made translucent. The following applications are available for such a chip: video, Internet, note, calendar, calculator.

The brightness of the backlight is also adjusted there, settings are called up or notifications are cleared.

You can change the wallpaper in the menu. A total of 18 pieces are available, you cannot assign your own.

Even in the LG firmware, the Quick Memo application appeared - quick notes on the smartphone screen. Including she knows how to take screenshots. It is located in the notification panel at the top left.

Everything else, in general, is familiar from bare Android and previous LG UIs.

    Calls and messages

The dialer is large and comfortable. When you enter the first digits, a list of subscribers with matching numbers opens. When you call, a huge contact avatar is displayed on the screen.

Also, during a call, the “power on” buttons are displayed. speakerphone”, “Contacts”, “Call Dialer”, “Turn Bluetooth On/Off”, and “Mute”. The call log displays a list of incoming and outgoing calls.

"Contacts" is presented as an alphabetically sorted list. On the right, you can select the letter with which the surname or first name of the subscriber begins. To create a new contact, you must click on the "plus" at the top of the screen. The following information is entered for each contact:

    • Avatar
    • Telephone
    • Email
    • Group
    • Mailing address
    • Organization and more

For typing, a proprietary LG keyboard is used. The characters are large and well separated from each other. Printing is very convenient. The language is switched by pressing the RU/ENG button. The view can be landscape or portrait. The text entry window at the top shows the number of remaining characters. Holding down the 123 button for a long time launches the keyboard settings.

For those who have vision problems, I advise you to switch the font size in the "Display" to "Extra Large". Really handy feature.

    Applications

I see no reason to re-list all the programs. If you want, read the previous reviews of LG smartphones. There is standard software from Google and LG.

    Web browser

Stylish web browser. Naturally, it supports working with Flash, but now the application must be searched on the Internet, since in Google Play he is no longer there. The page rendering speed is high, there were no “glitches” or “crashes” from the browser.

    Multimedia

Music player . In the player, you can organize songs by artists, albums, songs and folders. When playing music, the screen displays: a huge album cover, the name of the artist and the name of the album, below - the player control buttons. In settings: search, add to favorites, smartshare, add to playlist, delete, share (note, bluetooth, gmail, skype, sms/mms), set as ringtone, information and settings.

    Settings:

    • Show notifications (on, off)
    • Sleep timer (off, after 10, 20, 30 minutes, 1 or 2 hours)
    • Effects (Dolby Mobile, Bass Reduction, Treble Boost, Bass Boost, Vocal Boost, Headphone Boost, Custom EQ)

"Custom Equalizer" contains a 7-band equalizer from 30 Hz to 16 kHz.

I do not recommend using a standard music player: it does not produce very high-quality sound. I installed one of the most popular - PowerAMP. With it, I tested the musical capabilities of the LG Optimus G.

Headphone volume is high. The high and mid frequencies are well developed, but the low ones, it seemed to me, are slightly overwhelmed. In general, excellent quality.

Speaker volume is slightly above average. If you put LG on a horizontal surface, then the volume will drop by 50 percent, if you cover it with your hand - by 90.

FM radio. Operates in the FM band: 87.5 - 108 MHz. The screen displays the frequency scale, settings, 6 cells for storing the most interesting stations, switching the sound to the speaker and turning it off. The volume in the headphones is slightly above average, the sensitivity of the receiver is good.

Video. Present separate application"Video player". A list of all video files appears.

When playing, available: volume, zoom, SmartShare, screen lock and video playback in separate window. In the settings, subtitles are configured, video cropping, Dolby Mobile is enabled / disabled, and brightness is selected.

The smartphone plays videos of almost all formats and codecs (formats: 3GP, MKV, AVI, MPG, FLV, WMV; codecs: Mpeg4, H263, H264, DivX, XViD). Maximum Resolution- 1080r. If any of the videos does not work, install any media player, for example, MX Video Player.

    Conclusion

Before the LG Optimus G began to fall in price, I was extremely skeptical, since 25,000 rubles for this product was a very high price. Now the device is available for 19,000 - 20,000 rubles, so the impression is completely different.

Personally, I liked the design and materials of the case, the quality of the camera, the unusual screen with high contrast and sharpness, nice software features (animation of the lock screen and the main screen, QuickMemo and QSlide). Separately, it is worth noting that high speed of the interface that it can only be compared with Nexus 4.

There was one significant minus - the price, but as I said, it has decreased. Of the minor ones - the poor quality of a standard music player, heating of the case when the processor is under load (almost all powerful smartphones), the lack of a slot for installing microSD. Perhaps everything.
