Let's call the design of the Korean smartphone boring, ordinary. For example, devices from HTC or Nokia look more impressive, they are immediately remembered. In our case, the phone is nothing special, the monoblock looks simple and conservative.

At the same time, there is a complete similarity with the model line of that time. For example, next to the model looks on an equal footing, to some extent they can be called copies of each other. Modest black monoblocks with smooth sides and slightly protruding sides.

The assembly of the Korean smartphone is beyond criticism, the workmanship is excellent, as usual. There is no need to choose the color of the case, only one universal option is offered.

The dimensions of the phone are 115 x 58 x 10.9 mm, the weight is 115 g. The result is a brick-block of average size, which is neither overweight nor uncomfortable in size. The device can be safely put in a jeans or jacket pocket.

The main body is made of plastic. Despite the fact that it is glossy and seems to be able to collect prints, there are few traces on it. At the bottom there are two touch buttons. The arrow takes you one step back, and holding this key brings up the menu of running tasks. Another button opens the search menu. Interface

The lock screen should be called the most striking element of the phone shell. In order to activate the screen, you need to press the lock key. After touching, the display will light up for a short period of time. You can see information about time and date on the screen. At the bottom of the event line, icons of new messages or calls will be displayed, if such are left without the user's attention. This also includes data on future events recorded in the calendar. The number of events of each type will be indicated.

Above displays information about network connections... If the player is running, then from here it will be possible to control the work of the widget, which is responsible for the process of playing music. The decoration of the main screen is simple and even austere. Now the bulk of smartphones offer a variety of widgets, all kinds of functions in order to maximize the use of desktop space. The WP7 developers dropped this idea. Instead, a new and unusual way of organizing the menu is proposed. The status bar at the top combines information about wireless connections and time. Data on new events does not fall here. In this case, most often this period disappears, the battery charge level is not visible. You need to touch the top of the screen to bring up this menu.

Most of the space is occupied by large squares, which are responsible for accessing certain sections. These are application shortcuts, the menu itself is located on the next tab. It's easy to get into it, just follow the directions of the single arrow, under which a gaping black hole opens. Swiping your finger from right to left takes you to the main menu. All programs that are installed on your phone are listed here in alphabetical order. Get here as standard applications, and subsequently added by the owner of the device.

From here, any icon can be sent to the desktop. There they change places, are arranged in the right order. You may notice that some elements occupy not one area, but two. These are great labels that add some variety. Moreover, some of them are provided with animation. For example, a gallery icon will show something like a slide presentation. Real-time weather indication is displayed. As information about new events arrives, the corresponding icons appear on the icons. This is the number of new SMS, emails, or missed calls. The list of shortcuts scrolls up and down, otherwise it does not move. The same principle applies to the main menu. In order to make it easier to manage a large number of programs in the future, a search function is provided here, which will save you from the tedious flipping of a long line of icons.

If you want to change the design, you can choose from a black or white background, as well as eleven design themes. "Theme" - this is a loud saying, they do not transform the interface, they only change the color of the icons and some of the menu items.

The platform offers to take advantage of multitasking. You need to hold down the return button, after which a menu of windows will open, among which running applications will be displayed. There you can switch between them. However, this only applies to built-in applications. Third-party programs do not work so smoothly, the user is faced with a lack of real multitasking. Today this is one of the main problems of the new platform.

Contacts

The phone book is divided into three sections. The first one shows all the names that are in the device's memory. The second displays the ones that were used most often, these are the most popular contacts. The last column will pull together news from social networks. For example Twitter or Facebook.

Contacts are displayed in a list that allows you to see the image assigned to the subscriber. Full name and surname do not fit on one line. Personally, I don't like this option. Given the fact that a lot of free space remains on the screen, a similar implementation functional element looks controversial. Above the list of names, about a quarter of the screen is occupied by the large section heading. On the side, a small area is occupied by a neighboring graph. The phone book is divided into small groups, above each of them a letter is highlighted in a bright color.

In the settings, it selects the type of sorting of names and the variant of their display. There are book filter settings. From here, you can remove data from social networks if they interfere. By holding your finger on the line with the subscriber's name, this contact can be moved to the desktop, deleted or changed.

When creating a new user, different data is assigned to it. Before that, you need to choose where the information will be saved: to your Windows Live account or another profile.

The new user receives a first name, last name, patronymic, place of work, pseudonym, address, picture. It is assigned several phone numbers different types: mobile, home, work, organization, pager, fax. At the same time, a person, according to the platform's creators, can only have one mobile phone. The issue is solved by creating several contacts and combining them into one. But two home or work numbers. Three types of e-mail are set. Additional fields are assigned to the contact. This is an address, a website, a birthday, a note, an anniversary, a loved one, children, office location, position. Calls

To go to the dialing menu, you need to click on the icon, after which a list of numbers opens. The telephone part is divided into four groups. This is the call log itself, dialing, phone book and search. The device does not know how to remember the section that was used for the last time. Thus, to dial a number, you will always need to perform an extra action associated with the transition from the call list to virtual keyboard.

During the dialogue, information about the duration of the conversation is displayed on the screen, and before that, a picture will be displayed if it has been assigned to the contact. Latin characters are shown on the virtual keyboard, but they will not help when dialing a number. There is no function of automatic selection of suitable numbers. The only assistant in this matter is the search option.

The call list is very simple to organize. Here the entire history of calls goes in a long line of numbers. It doesn't matter if the numbers were the same or not. The phone cannot combine calls of the same type. The caller's name or number will be displayed if the data has not been saved in the phone's memory. In order to highlight the type of call (incoming or outgoing), a multi-colored backlight is used, which highlights the information under the number. By choosing a number from the list, you can see the call history when you dialed someone. A number is saved from the journal to the phone book either to an existing user, or a new one is created.

Posts

The correspondence is formed in two sections. The first consists of correspondence in the form of SMS and MMS. The other consists of Facebook contacts. Thus, you can correspond from here with users of the virtual community. Messages are displayed in a column. Here the sender's name or number is indicated in large print. The text below is displayed in small letters last post... On the right is the day when the message was received. If you hold your finger on the line, a menu will open, with which the entire dialogue is deleted. If desired, in the very correspondence between users, single SMS are deleted. If you open the chat window, messages will appear, which are divided into blocks. At the same time, incoming and outgoing SMS differ from each other in shades, which makes it easier to read. In addition, the date and time of receipt of the message are marked here. Above the message, the number or name of the person with whom you are communicating is displayed. If you click on this line, a menu will open that will allow you to make a call or see more detailed information about the subscriber.

When typing a message, you need to choose a sender. You can just type numbers on the line at the top of the screen, or select an existing contact. You cannot use previously used numbers. The text input field itself is located below, as new words are added, this space expands. When the number becomes more than sixty characters, the number of characters will be displayed at the bottom. This will help to take into account the volume of the new SMS, the sending of consolidated, large messages is supported. Text message automatically turns into multimedia if you add a picture to it. In this case, only a snapshot from the camera or an image from the gallery is inserted. It will not be possible to convey any other information.

The settings in this section allow you to turn off Facebook chat, activate a delivery report, which will be received as a separate message. It is inconvenient that the phone does not know how to save rough drafts in memory. To a lesser extent, the absence of templates is critical, but it is worth mentioning this fact.

Email

The device offers a mailbox setup wizard. It will be postal windows service live, outlook, Yahoo Mail or google. You will have to configure other services manually, the same Yandex or Mail are not provided for automatic settings.

Incoming emails with an attachment will display a paperclip icon to help you understand that something has been added to the message. There is enough space on the screen for information about five letters. There are four icons at the bottom. The first allows you to create a new letter, the second is responsible for selecting several objects, the other allows you to check your mail. The latter opens the search menu inside the correspondence archive.

Opening the received letter, you will see information about the sender, time and date of receipt, as well as the content. With the help of multitouch, it is easy to scale the text to a convenient size. However, the text does not know how to adjust to the boundaries of the screen. The type of attachments is shown, the device allows you to download and view files of "office" types, but where the uploaded document cannot be seen. For clarity, unloaded attachments are displayed as a paperclip icon. Those that have already downloaded receive a different icon, which corresponds to their familiar symbol on the computer - the icon Word file known to any user.

Entering text

You can choose between portrait or landscape mode. In both cases, about half of the screen is reserved for the keyboard. Available separate key to change the input language. Another one special button stores a lot of emoticons in memory. They are in the form of symbols, and not the usual emoticons, which will require some knowledge in order to select the desired type when sending. Implemented sound accompaniment when typing, you can turn it off. The required language layouts are selected from the menu. By holding your finger on the letter key, you can see a menu with additional symbols. For example, in the Russian layout, b is called through b, and e through E.

Copying and pasting of text is implemented. The cursor works in a similar way to help you correct typos. The built-in auto-substitution of words works very well, it has an extensive vocabulary, I liked it. The input speed depends on the user's skill. If you get used to the layout, you can type quickly enough.

Calendar

The device offers a choice of several ways of displaying information. This is a day scheduled by the hour, a list of scheduled events or tasks displayed in a separate column. In addition, all data can be displayed in the form of a regular monthly plan. It is important to note that some squares will contain something written. However, you will only be able to see the scheduled events if you go to the section with these data by clicking on the date and opening a new menu. And this despite the fact that there is a lot of free space at the bottom, it could be used more reasonably. The device allows you to use several calendars at the same time, each of them is highlighted in a different color. In the settings, you can change it by choosing one of the possible options.

When creating a new event, several fields are filled in: subject, place, calendar, time, duration. Additionally, a reminder is set, which is triggered at the start of the event, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 minutes, 18 hours, one day, one week. A daily repeat is turned on, on every weekday, on every day of the week that coincides with the day the event was created, with every date that coincides with the date the event was created. Event attendees are added and will receive email notifications about the event. Also, notes are created for the new record.

Browser

The address bar is at the bottom, right under the fingers, which is very convenient. An icon for reloading the page is provided on the left, an additional menu opens on the right. This includes the history of visited pages and bookmarks. The required resources can be added directly to the desktop. In the application settings, you can disable the saving of cookies, select the view mode. This item allows you to activate the mobile or full version.

The application works in landscape or porter mode, the set of features is the same. The search for the right words on the page works.

Music

The phone supports the formats.m4a, m4b, .mp3, .wma. The section with music and video is combined into a general group. Also included are podcasts and radio. Another tab shows history. Here you can look at songs that you listened to before or movies. Latest list will show the new data that has been added to the phone. In each of the categories, except for the first one, the covers of files are shown, it looks beautiful.

The Music section will offer a list of files sorted by name depending on the selected criterion. The following options are possible: artists, albums, compositions, playlists, genres. If you click on one of the letters, you can use the quick search function among the data.

When the song is playing, the cover of the file is displayed on the screen. At the top are three standard keys player control. Below is information about the artist, album and track title. Under the name of the song small print the titles of the next two songs are indicated. There is also information about the playing time and the total length of the song. However, there is no scroll bar rewind function, it does not work. To do this, you need to hold down the Forward or Back key to navigate to the desired area.

The repeat mode is activated for all songs or for just one. There is a mixed playback mode. Also, the song you like can be noted separately. If you click on the volume control button, a small menu will open, where information about the track and buttons for moving between songs will be displayed. It is also available when the screen is locked, which is convenient.

The sound quality is good, however, the volume margin is small, as is the case in others. Samsung phones... The absence of an equalizer can also be noted, however, it is pleasant to listen to music even without it.

Radio

The receiver is ascetic, only a line is displayed where a scale with numbers is displayed. Not only manual search works, but also automatic one. The desired stations are stored in the device's memory. There is no data here, for example, RDS information is not displayed. The design is very simple: white numbers on a black background and nothing else.

Video

The player is extremely simple. A list of files in the phone's memory is displayed here, after selecting the one you need, it will open in full screen, although black bars at the top and bottom are not excluded. The screen displays the duration of the clip, the time since the start of its playback. There are three keys to control the player, as well as a scroll bar that helps you quickly navigate through the movie. Declared formats: 3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m4v, .mbr, .wmv. There is no DivX or XviD support here. However, when copying a movie to your device via Zune app will automatically convert the file to the desired format. It will take time, of course.

For comparison: the main competitor Nokia Lumia 800 has the same diagonal and resolution, but the matrix made on the basis of AMOLED technology produces a less attractive picture.

Ergonomics

Screen Windows keyboard Phone 7.5 needs some work: when typing in horizontal position it does not occupy the entire screen area, and as a result, its buttons were not large enough.

There are no other complaints: the buttons react quickly to touch, the input language switches with one touch, and, if desired, you can add emoticons to the text.

The sound of the smartphone is quite clear and spacious, but, at the same time, some users may think that it lacks volume. However, this problem can be easily solved with high-quality headphones.

As always, when writing tests for devices running Windows Phone OS, we say hello to software developers and Microsoft in general: guys, we still need an available screenshot program, and you still do not rush to do it. The new mobile operating system Microsoft Windows Phone is now being talked about more and more often. With the arrival of Nokia, it has a much better chance of gaining attention from buyers. But other manufacturers are not sitting idle either. At the end of November, Samsung brings to the Russian market one of the most interesting smartphones based on WP7 - the model. This is the first Korean-brand Windows Phone in Russia.

Samsung is one of those manufacturers that support several platforms at once, including its own bada. This is absolutely true, because if one of them falls in sales, you can reallocate resources to the other. Now the priority is Android, on which Koreans have the maximum number of devices and sales. The Galaxy S II and its predecessor alone are worth something. Moreover, despite the purchase of Motorola, it is with Samsung that it continues to do Google smartphones under its own brand. How long the peace-friendship will last is unknown, so Koreans look around and cook possible ways other development of your portfolio. Windows Phone is one such path. Microsoft platform so far clearly has less weight for Samsung than for HTC or Nokia. But, nevertheless, it cannot be ignored.

It is valuable that in these conditions the Korean company did not make its first smartphone on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango just for show. This is one of the best Microsoft OS devices on the market. Important points there are two - this is a cost of 15 thousand rubles and a Super AMOLED screen. As a result, Omnia W looks very decent not only against the background of HTC, but even in comparison with Nokia. I8350 will appear at the end of November, i.e. before Nokia. Let's take a closer look at what to expect from Koreans and compare Samsung Omnia W with Nokia Lumia 800, HTC 7 Mozart.

Design, ergonomics

They didn’t come up with something unique with the design of the Omnia W. This is the familiar Galaxy R look with minimal differences. The back is the same solid removable part: smooth plastic with a cover made of metal of a different texture. Korean design is generally controversial, but here it feels like they were looking for a compromise or just one material was missing. On the other hand, there was a metal that its predecessors did not have, and many will like it.

Omnia W has only one color scheme - this is classic black, the most popular color option in Russia. In addition to the metal insert on the back, the body is completely plastic, but the materials are of high quality. The assembly also does not fail: no backlashes, no squeaks when squeezed - everything is fine. I was also pleased that the case is not easily soiled. Overall, the Omnia W is one of the nicest WP phones outwardly.

Thanks to the not very large 3.7 ”display, the model will appeal to those who are tired of huge smartphones-shovels on Android. Most Windows Phone devices follow the iPhone path not only in software, but also in hardware. As a result, these are small, lightweight models, even flagships (for example, Nokia Lumia 800). It is very pleasant to hold Omnia W, dimensions and weight are perfectly balanced. The thickness is 10.9 mm, and the weight is only 115.3 g. For comparison, the same Galaxy R weighs 131 g.

In terms of elements, everything is standard here. A 3.5 mm jack on top, microUSB on the bottom, a volume rocker on the left, an on / off button and a camera key on the right, and on the front panel there are touch elements for return and search, as well as a mechanical button “home screen”. There is a status indicator - it is convenient to see missed calls or a dead battery. There is also a 0.3 MP front camera, which can be used for video telephony (by the way, for some reason it is not available in Nokia Lumia 800).

Omnia W, according to the rules of Windows Phone, is equipped with a separate hardware camera button. Moreover, due to the peculiarities of the OS, you can quickly remove from standby mode, and even if the lock code is set. I really like this feature of WP, you can take snapshots literally on the go. But another feature of this OS, on the contrary, I do not like - it is the lack of a slot for a memory card. Microsoft is promoting its SkyDrive service in this way, 25 GB is available to each owner.

All Windows Phone smartphones are now based on the Qualcomm platform, and Samsung is no exception. Our hero also runs on the Qualcomm MSM 8255 chipset and has a 1.4 GHz single-core processor. However, Windows Phone does not support multi-core yet, so the decision is justified. Speed ​​of work thanks to the fast OS in the very high level... The Mango update has further improved this setting. The complaints are caused by old software versions that are not optimized for version 7.5 and do not even support multitasking. Gradually, there will be less and less of them, there are almost 50 thousand applications in total for WP7.

The Omnia W has 512MB of RAM and 8GB of non-expandable flash memory - standard set familiar to us from Radar and many other smartphones. That's not much, but Microsoft is limiting manufacturers by promoting its SkyDrive service. To every Windows owner Phone smartphone instead of a slot for a memory card, a “virtual” flash drive of 25 GB is offered. The disadvantage of such a proposal is that you will not receive information without access to the Internet. The rest is the usual set. There is Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. The FM radio has not gone anywhere, there is support for 3G and a front camera. Omnia W also supports DLNA and works in Wi-Fi mode points. But the model does not have a TV-out, but this is a small loss.

Unlike HTC Radar or Nokia Lumia 800, here the battery is removable, which is a plus. Its capacity also does not fail, it is 1500 mAh. A full charge lasts about two days of average load. I tested the Omnia W by streaming video at maximum brightness over Wi-Fi. It turned out 5 hours 32 minutes. MP3 files with the screen off and communications were played for 38 hours and 11 minutes. The indicator is excellent, despite the high frequency of the processor and the bright screen - the effect of the Super AMOLED technology, which is sharpened for low power consumption and disconnected communications. WP7 is better optimized for battery life than Android. But constant appeal to social networks the new Microsoft operating system minimizes this advantage. If you do not use this, you get indicators at the iOS level.

The screen is one of the best among Windows Phone devices. It is second only to Nokia, but the difference is minimal, judge for yourself (Samsung on the left):

Super AMOLED 3.7 ”is used. Brightness and contrast are maximum, viewing angles are very wide, and the image looks very good in the sun. The technology is capacitive, the touchscreen is pleasant. For its price the best way and one of the trump cards of the Omnia W. The only thing is the resolution, like all WP smartphones, here is 800x480. If this is normal for our hero, then it is not enough for the older flagships. Microsoft restricts manufacturers in order to defragment software and because of the Qualcomm chipset. Hopefully in the future we will see more high resolutions on WP.

But the Omnia W's camera is not the most powerful. It has 5 MP, flash and HD video recording at 720p at 30 fps. The settings are standard, nothing new. As for the quality, it is average. Pictures are blurred in low light conditions. The flash is powerful enough, but not too high-quality - it distorts colors a lot. Here are examples on maximum settings quality:

Windows Phone

Like the first HTCs, our hero also works under Windows control Phone version 7.5 Mango. There is multitasking, Russian support and more than 500 changes compared to the "seven". But the OS is still inferior in functionality and software base more old Android, iOS and even Symbian. The most important advantage of WP is the speed of work. But not everyone will like the asceticism and the small number of settings.

In my opinion, while WP7 is more suitable for enthusiasts in the background of older iOS, Android and even Symbian. But this is only because it is a young OS, which is only about a year old. And its growth rate is impressive.

If you liked the design of the new WP and the speed of work is important, you need to take a closer look at this OS. If you need functionality (Flash, full-fledged multitasking, "live" wallpapers, etc.) or the software you need has not yet appeared, it is better to pay attention to Android, for example, the same nearest Galaxy R. Samsung pre-installs a lot of branded applications, but there is nothing special (like Nokia has) among them. FunShot lets you take pictures with different effects. The feature became widespread after the iPad 2 appeared. Another graphics application is Photo Studio. This is a simple graphics editor.

The Now manager is preinstalled - a weather, news, stock, currency and micropost application. In this case, the weather can be displayed as a hub shortcut on the main screen. Perhaps this is the most useful of Samsung's proprietary software.

The rest of the programs are not that interesting, they are MiniDiary diary and RSS Times reader.

I liked the Samsung Omnia W. This is a small, lightweight smartphone with good performance, and most importantly - with an adequate price. For 14,990 rubles you get one of the most affordable Windows Phone devices in Russia. Only Nokia Lumia 710 and last year's HTC 7 Mozart can compete with it in price. Against their background, the Korean novelty looks very dignified, especially with regard to the screen.

Of course, the Omnia W has its drawbacks, but most of them rest on Windows Phone. This is the lack of a slot for a memory card, lack of support for DivX / Xvid and Adobe Flash video, a small number of programs, etc. Someone else may not have enough TV-out, but I do not consider this to be a serious disadvantage. If you evaluate the model in terms of competitors of Microsoft OS, then everything is fine. A serious opponent is Nokia Lumia 800, but it is more expensive (20,990 rubles), it has a non-removable battery and no front camera.

Samsung's debut on the Russian Windows Phone market turned out to be very promising. I recommend buying if you are looking for a smartphone running on Microsoft OS. True, if it is not fundamental for you to take Windows Phone, then Android has more interesting offers for the same money, including from Samsung.
